[Q] Mass storage not working - Epic 4G General

Upgrades from DI18 to EC05 and now my Mass Storage doesn't show up on my PC as a removable disk. I can't move any files to or from my phone now.
Any workarounds?
Any ideas how to fix? I can see the files on the phone using the file manager on the phone. Gallery shows up fine, too.
Thanks!

I have had this problem myself with the dk28 firmware. Try a non Samsung micro usb cable, I found the blackberry cable of good quality and install all of Samsung drivers on your computer.

I had the same problem. Tried a friend's cable that came with his Droid, and it worked right away. Went into a Sprint store with my stock Samsung cable, explained that it was bad, and the rep gave me a Blackberry cable as a replacement.

Mine doesn't work either, I think since EC05. I bought an OEM Blackberry cable and still no dice. Neither my PC nor my Macbook will recognize it. I just ended up buying a MicroSD card reader and transfer data externally.

I'll try another cable sometime soon. I'm guessing it was ec05 that broke mine. I use Double Twist to sync music, so I need the USB connection!
EDIT
It works now that I have a new USB cable. Same cable from the Epic, but the Spring store gave me a new one...

USB not recognized

When I plug my phone into my usb port I keep getting an error message
That says
USB device not recognized
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message.
So when I do that it says unknown. I know I have the drivers installed because I can odin back to stock. I am thinking this is the reason why wired tether will not work.
Can anyone let me know what the problem may be?
Thanks.
This has happened to me from time to time. A reboot of the pc and phone has always fixed it.
I just realized I have never used this cable with the phone. I got it at walmart and it is made by fuse. So it could be the cable.
Also try a different usb port. Mine got error error messages on some ports but not the other on the same computer.
I bought several usb cables for cheap online. 1 totally stopped working, and another one disconnects the phone is I move the cable.
I always suspect the cable!
I am having the same problem with my laptop atm...
My computer can't seem to see the epic when it's in d/l mode. I've installed the samsung drivers as well...but no go.
Hopefully someone has a suggestion to fix the problem. I'll be seaching the forums in the meantime.
had the same problem try a different usb port aslo dont use usb multi hubs.
I have the same problems as well.
A reboot fixes nothing.
None of my ports work.
I do not want to replace my epic but this simple issue is nerve wrecking.
I have a similar problem. Both my wife and I have the epic. I have no issues connecting my phone to either of our computers but when I connect my wife's epic neither of the computer's see the phone at all (not even as an unrecognized device). The phone asks if I want to mount the sd card and I say yes and nothing happens. I've tried usb debugging and I can't get Odin to work either for hers (fine for mine). Has anyone else had this issue?
Thanks

[Q] Epic not mounting

I cannot get my epic to mount for ANYTHING! I factory wiped the phone, nope, I used a palm pre usb cable nope, I downloaded the official samsung drivers nope, I plugged the cable into the motherboard on the computer nope, I tried a different computer running windows 7, nope tried a laptop using windows vista, nope. Does anyone know ANY WAY POSSIBLE to get this thing to mount? I selected mass storage and dissabled and enabled usb debugging. Im just not having any luck. It seems that the computer recognizes the phone is connected just cant get to the files on the SD card.
I also spent many hours trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with my Epic, that is, why it would come up as a "malfunction" in Windows when I plugged the USB cable in.
I tried drivers, different restore points, wiping, etc. etc. etc.
To the point... Try a new USB cable. The one packaged with the Epic is junk. As a matter of fact, it worked several times before it crapped out. I have no idea why, but I picked up a new micro USB cable, plugged it in, and the phone was then immediately recognized by my computer to allow mass storage mount.
People who tried the Palm Pre USB cable also had issues for some reason.
IMO, there should be a sticky posted in this board regarding the packaged USB cable, as I encounter this issue quite a bit.
Ok I'll try to find a new one really quick thanks
ugh tried an HTC Mytouch 4g usb cable and that didnt work either. Gonna try a class 4 usb stick and im gonna try puttting all of the files on the computer from the SD card
Edit: Oh wow i cant put the files on the computer duh
Edit: Ok now I'm mad a Class 4 SD card wont connect to the computer thru the epic ughhhh
I'm guessing during this time, you've rebooted the computer a few times? Sometimes, that's all it takes...
Try uninstalling ALL of the USB drivers associated with the Epic, rebooting the computer, then connecting (with debug mode OFF). Windows found and installed the USB drivers for me in just a few seconds when I did this [with the new cable, the first time].
- G
Have u enabled development mode under settings > applications (in your) epic? If not, try that, then plug in cable.
Then pull down the notification bar and it'll give you back the option.. again, if you haven't tried this.
On occasion I have troubles with the Epic mounting/ejecting on a Mac, but the only time I've ever had an issue with it mounting on a PC a different cable solved the problem immediately.
Try a different USB port on your PC. If that doesn't work, try rebooting the PC and the phone.
I had luck with trying different usb ports though
I had this problem as well and:
1. Tried 4 different cables
2. Tried all 4 on all 4 different USB ports
3. Rebooted numerous times
4. Uninstalled/reinstalled drivers
5. Tried 3 different PCs (1 other running 7 and another running Vista)
6. Did 1-4 on all three computers.
OH! and the reason I was so adamant about finding a solution was that I was stuck in Clockwork... due to having messed up an EXT4/RFS/CW2.5/CW3.0 installation... It was MY fault... I screwed up.
The problem was I had been living with the nonmounting problem by simply putting my MicroSD into an adapter and plugging it into my Laptop for file transfers... never expecting to HAVE to ODIN at some time...
Anyway... I ended up coughing up the $100 to Insurance and replacing the phone.
HERE IS MY THEORY: I think what my problem was was that the USB port on the Phone was messed up. I think these USB ports are possibly a hardware fail point and the changing of cables has been a patch on the issue with the port... NOT the cables themselves!
I'm not suggesting that you are there yet since it sounds like you can at least still get the phone to boot up (and aren't stuck in CW) and could still use a work around of putting files on the MicroSD with an adapter...
But I would suggest you don't be as stupid as me and get yourself in a position where ODIN is your only hope.
Yeah, it sounded like a bad USB port to me. Also, FYIY, if you ever have to replace the phone through insurance, tell them that the phone was lost. Either way, it will cost you $100.00 to get a replacement and when it's reported as lost, they will also send you a new battery...

You don't really think that I sent in a phone that was stuck in CW do you? I don't think that would have worked too well for me.....
Cheers!
Did you end up doing an ODIN restore

W7 PC won't see rooted NC anymore

I rooted my NC from 1.1.0 using autonooter awhile ago and it works pretty well in general. I used to be able to hook it up to my home PC (w7) and my work PC (XP) with no problems. ADB worked (usually), the drives showed up, etc.
Everything still works on the work PC, and another W7 PC I tried it on.
Now, for some reason, neither the NC nor its SD card show up on my home PC when I plug it in! The NC shows the normal "USB Mode" screen when I plug it in, and my PC makes the USB Ding sound. But no new drives show up.
The only thing I can think of that changed is around the time it stopped working, I replaced my old USB Card reader with a new one (old one didn't work with SDHC). I also renamed some drive letters to reorganize them, since the card reader always shows 4 drive letters in windows.
I don't see the USB controller entry for the NC that I used to see in Device Manager either.
Check for NookcolorUMS app
I was having some bizarre connection issues with my PC, too, and they seem to have been corrected (at least they haven't recurred) by using a USB extension cable. It makes no sense, and I didn't do it to attempt a fix, but just noticed that the issues seemed worst when plugging into the top-side 'convenience' USB ports, and had an extra extension cable sitting around, so I plugged that into a rear port to make access less awkward. Since then, the PC consistently mounts everything just like it should.
I'm still using the NC's data cable, just plugging it into a maybe 1' extension cable rather than directly in the slot.
my XP based computer won't see the rooted NC either, however I will have to try using a port on the motherboard as opposed to one of the front mounts and see if that does the trick. I just kinda gave up on it as I didn't really need it too bad (I only use my nook for email, web browsing, and to control my DVR).
Well I unrooted my NC as I had planned anyway to upgrade to 1.2, but the problem hasn't gone away.
I tried plugging into an extension cable I have that goes directly to a MoBo rear port, but no change.
I can't run the nookcolorUMS now that I'm unrooted. Maybe I'll try it when I re-root eventually.
The thing is, it works on every other computer, so I can't figure out why it would stop working on just this one. It seems like it must be a windows issue, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is.
I don't bother with usb
USB connectivity is so unreliable that I don't even bother with it.
To move files around I use File Expert/network to access the PC via wireless from the device.
It's easy, reliable, and FAST.

That's a good tip. Unfortunately you have to use USB for certain functions, like manual nooting, or synching with Calibre (I suspect).
Once I'm rooted again I'll probably start using wireless for small stuff, but if I'm moving a gigabyte movie over, I'm not sure how long that will take, or how much battery it will use.
Does anything come up in device manager when you connect it? If so, did you try deleting anything that does come up, disconnect and start over? Worth a shot....
You don't have to guess--if you see a USB device that might be the NC, open properties>details and from the dropdown choose "hardware ids." If the number 2080 is in the id, it's the NC.
Nothing new comes up in device manager when I plug it in. It used to...
I experienced a similar issue and this was what causing it.
1. I have 2 front USB connections (nothing connected to either)
2. External Power USB hub connected to a rear USB slot
On Win 7, whenever I plug-in the NC via USB, I got a device not recognize error. I tried plugging it into different ports and pretty much either got no detection or device not recognize. Here is the kicker, as soon as I plug it into the usb hub, window recognize and mount it right away. This also happen to be true if I remove the usb hub altogether.

Driver Installation Issues

I am trying to install the Samsung Intercept (Virgin Mobile) on my Windows 7 netbook. I could never connect the device before to either WinXP or Win7. I recently factory reset my phone and after installing the drivers on WinXP, the phone showed that it was connected. I mounted the SD card to the computer and it never showed the drive. I unmounted and disconnected and since then it never connected. I keep getting that it's not recognized.
On my Win7 computer, I installed the drivers (had to force Windows to find the driver). Now the computer senses that it's connected, but it says "the device cannot be started". So I'm thinking that my P.O.S. phone can't figure out wtf USB mode is. It showed it once and that's it.
I've tried probably 3 or 4 different drivers and now I can't figure out how to just start clean. I don't even think I need to because the computer driver installed fine (It says Samsung USB Android whatever when it's connected). I tried with USB debugging on and off.
I even tried to make a virtual Windows XP to try it on a fresh install, but VM won't take unknown USB devices.
I uninstalled all my drivers, even the USB hub drivers, rebooted after the uninstall. No luck.
Before I reinstalled the hub I tried to force XP to the drivers (different ones not the same driver over and over) and now its saying "the file does not contain any information about this device". WTF?!
I'm so confused with this stupid driver that I can't take it anymore. I'm now considering reformatting my computer, but it's not worth it just to root a phone. I'd rather put up with my phone needing a battery pull at least once a day than to lose all my files.

I had the same issue too.
Have you tried using another USB cable? If you're using the cable that came with the phone it wont work (well sometimes). What you can do is find or buy another Micro USB cable for your intercept. You can buy one off amazon for less than $10. I brought mine from Best buy for $20. It works fantastically.

I was seriously considering another cable because I read in some other threads pretty much what you just told me, but I guess I was one of those "on the twelth time it finally connects" type of situations. I connected it last night and it worked. Just need to update my SDK stuff, make sure I have all my info for SuperOneClick, and cross my fingers lol!
Thank you for your advice. If it stops working I'm gettilng a new cable.
[EDIT] and it stopped working... I knew I should've just rooted when I had it connected, but I wanted to back my stuff up. Looks like I'm getting a new cable lol.

[EDIT] You were totally right! It's the cable. I got a Belkin for $15 at Target. I plugged it in and immediately Windows 7 Pro 32-bit detected the drivers, the handset, and installed it. Now time for rooting
I know it's been a couple of months, but I'm curious if you've had any other problems with connecting?
I was having the same problem and I had a few cables that I tried with no luck. I also tried my wife's Blackberry cable, which is a thicker cable that claims to be a "DATA" cable...no go.
I probably will just go buy the Belkin one you referred to if you've had no other problems.
Thanks!

I actually have had no problems (on my Win7 PC) since the install. As for my XP computer, I just gave up on trying to get it to work. Try completely uninstalling every instance of the Samsung programs (I went through my registry *dangerous*) and all things Android and reboot to a fresh power cycle (like with the phone) so Windows can update all its important files reguarding the driver removal. Then install and THEN plugin.
It literally randomly worked for me. I had the drivers installed properly, but the charging cord gave me "bad driver install". I didn't change a thing and plugged in wth the Belkin and was good to go.
Hope you can get it working! I know the anticipation of phone modding, and I love it! Lol!

Ditto, ditto and ditto! I have the same thing with my intercept, except I started on win7/64, could not get anything going. Then created an XP VM - over my dead body - no go.
Using the same cable, if I plug in my Captivate, everything comes up.
For you guys, when you bought a different cable, what did you buy? micro-to-micro USB? Or something else?
J
I usually use the cables that came with my HTC phones. Also I have better luck if I reboot the phone prior to connecting it to the PC.

phone won't connect to PC and turns on when usb inserted

So my phone has a few issues. I'm hoping somebody can tell me how to correct this.................
-when I plug a usb cable into it (whether from computer or power cord) The phone turns on (if it was powered off)
-my computer will not reconize the phone. I've tried reinstalling the Samsung drivers. My PC reconizes my android tablet just fine. I have installed all the android developer stuff (forgot what it's called). I've put my phone into download mode too... still does not reconize it. Yes, I've toggled USB debugging.
so because of all of this:
-I can't install the bonzi recovery
-I can't Odin
-I can't return to stock
Luckily I have CWM installed so I can flash zips
i have midnight 5.3 running fine and have no other problems. I'm just unable to now upgrade to 5.5 (because it can not be flashed via CWM..only by bonzi)
Anyone have any ideas? I think something has gone currupt on the phone. Or maybe I have a physical problem with the usb port?
Thanks!

I believe this is by Samsung's design. Mine does the same thing.

Probably your usb cable, the Epic is a little sensitive to the quality of the cable, and the one they include is not great. Also, you could try a usb port that is directly attached to the motherboard, instead of a front panel usb port.

this is sound advice, however, if everything is the same, and nothing has changed, and it used to work, then un-install all samsung drivers that you can think of and find, remove the android sdk, then go find and install PDAnet.. you don't need to use it, but install it. follow the instructions carefully, pick samsung and you will have guaranteed working drivers.
Hope this helps (and ditch the stock cord)
I had the same problem, out of the box everything was grand a few months later my computer wouldn't reckognize my phone. I tried every port every driver and low and behold it was the POS usb cable. I bought a blackberry cable from the internet for about $5 its nice and thick and works like a charm every time. I still use the crappy cable at work to charge it but when I need a computer to see my phone the thicker cable works everytime.

My computer recognized my phone just fine on EC05 but on Bonsai v5 it did not. I looked in Device manager at the USB ports and there was a Samsung Android listed there and when I examined it, it said no drivers installed. Could not understand that, and another Epic with the same ROM connected just fine. So hit update drivers and after 10 minutes I was connecting again...wierd. Try it.
My phone did the same thing. I just took it to the sprint store and they replaced it for me
