i currently have evo shift but its still under 30 days and i heard nexus s coming out this month so what shuld i do ?? is nexus s is better than evo shift ?? help please thanks guys
nexus s upgrade will be always firstt
Do you have a preference for a hardware keyboard?
I think both phones are exceptionally fast. There's a point in processor speed where you can't really tell the difference if ones better than the other.
With the nexus you get the full google experiences with the ability to be on googles latest software versions.
With the shift you have your keyboard and htc excellent build quality.

Also the nexus s does not have a sd card slot so you cannot remove or expand the memory.

Nexus S
Pure Google, Latest Firmware updates when they come out, Beautiful Contour Display, 2 Cameras (front,Back) 1ghz Processor,
Evo Shift
HTC build, Hardware keyboard, HTC Sense UI Overlay, Android 2.2 (2.3 in q2 2011 OFFICIAL) 800mhz second generation snapdragon cpu, Facebook Integration, Nice virtual keyboard. 1 5megapixel camera. 480x800 HDPI
MY suggestion wait for the Evo 3D
Between the two you want i would pick the Nexus S although i have a shift and i love it. you cant go wrong

forgot to add like the above post
Nexus S
16gb internal memory NO SD CARD so no expandable memory
Evo shift about 400mb of internal and 2gb sd card that can be expanded to 32gigs
The Nexus S doesn't have an SD slot?! I had no idea...that's an interesting omission by Samsung or Google, whoever is responsible.
Doesnt the shift have 2gb of internal memory?

I'd love a Nexus if it wasn't made by Samsung.
^ Shift Faced
^ I agree ^
Some of my turn offs with the Sam is no notification light, the build quality feels cheap and too light, painfully slow charge cycle, no HD record, and nothing significantly new when compared to the epic besides vanilla gingerbread out of the box.

Bingo. Before I picked up the Shift, I was considering the Nexus on T-mo, but after handling one I was quickly reminded that is indeed a Samsung handset. It's a nice phone for sure, but not to my liking.

You can't really access it. You only have access to ~1gig of it total, a lot of it is eaten up by /system recovery, /data/ and other stuff.
You get usually around 300 mb free to 350 on /data after a fresh wipe and a few packages. /system usually has about that much free all the time, but nothing ever really gets written there.
@OP - If you're patient, wait for the 3d. Although if you want battery life, you're better off with one of the two you listed, I'd probably go with the shift out of the two.
If you want a real powerhouse, the 3d will do that, but it has no keyboard, will be a lot of money, and it will probably lose battery fairly quickly unless they've absolved that issue in the newer generation evo's.(The shift is fine, but og evo wasn't so good on battery).
If you're around a charger most of the time, evo 3d would be an easy sell, the power+big screen+hdmi+decent camera+ect is just an easy sell.
I think all the points are already made in this thread, I'd just like to add that this is likely my last HTC mobile device.
I'm extremely satisfied with my shift, but the direction HTC is taking... in the future I'll be more apt to look at Samsung, LG, hell even Dell.

what do you consider extemely fast battery drain? I've had the shift since the first day it came out in january and the one thing that immediately blew me away was the awesome battery life.
I go a whole work day plus some (10hrs) on a charge with moderate to heavy use... is this your first android phone?

When I leave this phone, it will be multi core(so not a nexus s), it will not have a locked/cryptographic signed loader(so not an evo 3d), and it will preferably be a four inch or smaller screen (I may have to concede on this one though the way they are going)

Wouldn't get my hopes up for Honeycomb, Google pretty much stated HC is tablet only and Ice Cream Sandwich is going to replace both Honeycomb & Gingerbread by the end of the year. So more then likely we'll get ICS long before we see HC for phones.

I'm guessing you had a Moment? The Transform is actually pretty nice for a low to mid level device.
I would also have to agree that when I switch from my shift a dual core is a must. As far as the Nexus S I wasn't impressed by it's design nor its specs. No expandable memory being on of the biggies. And no improvement in processor versus previous galaxy s phones, not 100% sure. I can't see what this device has that makes it superior to others, rather than just being vanilla android.
I'm not happy with Samsung's plasticy feel of their devices either. Makes them feel cheap. I do like the AMOLED screens but not the dotted effect that some (including me) can see.
However, I am seriously giving the Galaxy S II phones consideration when choosing my next device. Specs wise seems rather nice. Has dual core processor, nice camera, and expandable memory. And the Super Amoled Plus screen seems to correct the dotted effect of the previous Amoled screens as the rgb colors are evenly presented.

You my friend need to root your phone. Secondly, the nexus S 4G has not been out very long, and samsung is typically slow on the updates. I do not know if you ever had an EVO 4G (not shift), but when i originally had mine, it was absolutly horrible in terms of responsiveness and battery life (battery still sucks). This was 3 months after its release.
Why is this in the shift forum? Not to be an ass but I don't think this is necessary or productive. We need an offtopic forum lol

This is just a guess, but I think ALOT when on behind the scenes on the Nexus that we don't know about. I mean how would google allow their flagship phone to come out with technology that is outdated by almost a year? I think this phone was in development, and got held up, and by the time assembly on it started it was too late to scrap it. That's why there is another rumored Nexus that should be ready come Holiday season. Have to make up for your mistake somehow.

Yea I agree with you. I didn't think Google would have purposefully put out a technologically inferior flagship device unless they had issues while developing.
If other galaxy s phones are any indication, probably took that long to get gps working.

The epic pretty much is an all around better phone
An argument could be made on the SW side, but that falls by the wayside if you are not staying stock
Mainly, the EVO Shift is simply missing to many top level hardware items, that make it a upper mid range phone rather than the top tier the Epic is
I was faced with the same question when I bought not long ago.
Screen size favors Epic (4.0" - 3.6" That's a significant difference in Real Estate)
Screen brightness favors Epic (Samsungs Super AMOLED easily tops anything HTC has IMO)
Keyboard favors Epic (the larger size of the phone spaces the keys better, Epic has 5 rows including dedicated number row)
Processor favors the Epic (1.0 Ghz Hummingbird - 800 Mhz Snapdragon)
I believe rated battery stock time is 5.50 hrs for Epic to 6.00 for Shift.
Epic has front facing camera (which I never use, but some people do I'm sure)
The list goes on, but you can google other features.
As far as Flashing ROMs, I am NOT really tech savvy, but after reading through these forums I was not only able to root the phone quickly, but flashing was simple and I have found the ROMs I've used to be stable and functional with very few bugs. Can't beat that.
Epic, all the way.
Epic. Who ever choosed shift needs a swift kick in the wallnuts.

Even though i love my epic i would go with the shift because it has locked gps in a few seconds and capable of overclocking to 2.0Ghz and 1.6Ghz stable.
Its fun to use but i like epic 4g because of its screen. and Samsung is Easy to manipulate and easy to use like rooting and all that stuff.
But now its easy to get the Shift rooted in all.
I just like the bigger screen and AMOLED is deal breaker. i went with the shift at 1st because Samsung pissed me off as well as thousands more, with a certain phone.
Thanks everybody for your answers .. I'm leaning towards the Epic now.

Yeah .. I'm leaning more towards the Epic though just because of the screen and 5 row keyboard.. I figured I would post this here, even though I also placed it in the troll thread, as it was having the same discussion
I haven't heard of the Epic screens blacking out, but mine has held up beyond belief, even after facing harsh abuse.
IMO, it is a not a "power/speed" issue that makes the EVO Shift a lesser phone, but the overall lack of top end hardware features, and those CAN'T be modded in later
Here are several reviews with the conclusions, as well as links to the original reviews, and the Epic is not just a winner, but a CLEAR winner in every case.
From Techd
You don’t have to imagine how two Android smartphones would perform when pitted against one another, as the folks at WireFly have done the deed. Pitting HTC EVO Shift 4G against the Samsung Epic 4G, the latter wins out big time.
...
So, it seems like the EVO Shift 4G did admirably well for some basic processes, but stumbled badly when it comes to complex 3G graphics. But then again, it has a lower running processor than the Epic 4G with only 800MHz — though that’s not the end all be all performance measurement.

4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G
Avatar for Brian Barrett Brian Barrett —4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G Let's say you want a 4G phone, because 4 is one more G than your current phone has. If you're deciding between Sprint's finest—the HTC Evo Shift and the Samsung Epic 4G—you're gonna want to watch this.
Both phones are sliders, both are on the same network, and by outward appearances seem pretty much identical. But! The Epic 4G, it turns out, is packing way more horses under the hood. As it should, considering it costs almost twice as much as the Shift.

The Winner
Unlike other previous battles such as the HTC Thunderbolt vs. Motorola Droid Bionic battle, Samsung Epic 4Gthe HTC EVO Shift 4G vs. Samsung Epic 4G battle seems to have a pretty clear cut winner. The Samsung Epic 4G, even though it came out first, has huge advantages when it comes to display, and features while the HTC EVO Shift 4G manages to win a slight edge in design and software. Overall the advantages of the Samsung Epic 4G are too big to ignore and it easily comes out on top in this battle of 4G keyboard slider smartphones on Sprint.

heres the thing though Shift is running 2nd Gen Snap. And even @ 800Mhz it pulls double score than Epic @1Ghz both on froyo.
Then Shift on 2.3 just blows the sh*t outta the Epic.
Newer Technology is better.
Older Technology is Wiser.
But in the end its all down to personal preference.
Just mess with both phones see what you really like and want.

THIS, and that i don't want a phone too big, so the Nexus S is just the right size.
I just got one as a replacement for my EVO 4G as well. I chose it for a few reasons, but primarily because on my old EVO (before I had to get it replaced) I was running Deck's EVO ROM which was basically AOSP modified to look and work just like stock 2.3, and I really liked its simplicity while remaining fully-functional.
Now using it on the Nexus, it's a marked improvement. I don't really care about dual-core processors and what-not with my phones. Not having Sense by itself makes it worth have one core to me, frankly.

I'm in the same boat. I've got the T-Mo variant of the Nexus S and I've got a Sensation. Not sure which I want to keep at this point. I like Sense and I like the qhd display, but I also like the simplicity of stock Android and I really like the SAMOLED display. The Sensation isn't a whole lot faster than the Nexus, and when it comes to updates, we know the deal there. I switch back and forth, but I'm getting tired of doing that.

My 3G has been comparable to my EVO, so I feel no loss there. My reception sucks at home but it does on every network; Sprint gave me an Airave to resolve that problem.
Pictures of a new HTC device running Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.0 were leaked. The device is heading for Verizon and it will have LTE capabilities!
Check out the source for pics of the new device running sense 4.0.

This might be a true successor to the original Droid Incredible. Some sites are saying AMOLED, so that would be nice. I'm not a fan of SLCD. Now, if only they can do something about battery life. That's the reason I didn't go to Rezound (oh, and the fact that the phone was way too thick in the first place).
I'm really torn. I like HTC Sense (Yeah, I guess I'm in the minority) but the battery on the Razr Maxx makes me want to overlook that I am not a fan of Moto's UI as much and their screen issues. If by some miracle HTC has addressed battery size/life, I think this will be my next phone.
Looks nice and all, but I'm pretty reluctant to purchase another snapdragon phone. Sense can be cool but future-proofing is cooler. As we all know from our Adreno 200 woes, snapdragon products are not future-proof and qualcomm has made no effort to collaborate with the community to bring us updated video drivers or open source userspace drivers. I'm voting with my wallet on this one.

I want the Incredible 3 to be the same size as the original. I don't want/need a ginourmous screen. I just want a perfect size device, aka the original, with updated guts. Thanks.
I want a big phone bigger than iPad lol (that's a little to big but u get my point )

Here's what this phone's gotta have for me to get one: a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, an HD screen that is NOT pentile, and a battery that approaches 2000 mAh.
I would also like to be able to turn Sense off and go plain vanilla, or I'd like to use a launcher of my choice.
I've been eligible for an upgrade since January 4th. It's hard holding off until MWC and CTIA... If I don't see anything I like, it will be an LG Spectrum for me.

I just don't know anymore...by the time I upgrade Jellybean will be in full force so..yeah
I only did a 1 year (remember those) upgrade when I got my Incredible.. and I got it day 1...
There has been nothing yet to want me to change to a new phone...
What I want: CDMA / GSM / LTE on 1 chip (which should be in phones by end of year - will definitely help battery life if everything was on one)... Super Amoled.... 4 inch Screen (slightly bigger than the Incredible.. but not huge like the others. I have big hands.. really big.. but its a phone.. not a tablet I want)... GREAT camera... And long battery life (hopefully fixed with my first wish)...
I'm not an Android fanboy.. or an iOS fanboy.. I just want a phone to match what I want.
Hmmm... I'll probably miss my optical track "ball". I rarely use it but comes in handy for editing.

i will be getting this if i stay on vzw. only if they let me keep data.
why did they discontinue unlimited data ?
Sent from my Incredible using xda premium
because they were loosing money.... lol
I thought I heard VZW is going to offer family data plans. Data limited plans I'm sure.

I couldn't agree with you more. That's one of the main reasons that I have upgraded my device (besides the fact I love my Dinc), if I can barely fit it in my pocket, that is a problem.
Looks good but from the pics I saw of the sgs3 I might get a Samsung next. 12mp cam, tegra 3, and ics sound great
I agree

I just want to see Verizon's line of phones for this summer so I can make an informed decision. Rumors are great but the one thing not mentioned is becoming more important, battery capacity.
Looks huge. Why have all the companies gotten caught up in a screen size pissing contest? We need another RAZR that is thin AND small. Not like the current one, which is closer to a machete than a razor.
I had HTC DESIRE HD before n tht i bought this phone n i am super disappointed after buying this phone. I wonder why did u go for this phone. I could hv gone for HTC ONE X+. May b i was drunk that time.
This phone has more ram thn my previous phone. More Cpu Power with 4 cores but still this phone freezes and dsnt perform multi tasking very well.
One thing I hv learned is that samsung phones are nothing but s***. Even the development is limited as sumsung doesnt release the source code. My advice HTC has been and always will be the best touch phone manufacturer.

What rom and kernel was you using?
Did you remove bloatware?
If you were using stock, what version was you on and was it carrier branded (with even more bloatware)?

SAMSUNG S series always seem to hold there value quite well like iphone and screen s always good. Like removable battery plus sd card. Never had one x but older HTC phones would always get dust under the screens. Has put me off them for life as I work in dusty environment.
Also battery life on HTC phones really poor

Then go with the One X.
I chose the SGS3 for these reasons:
Way better Quality Control, thinner and lighter, removable battery and SD card, better internals, performance, official updates (doesn't really matter now that I'm on CM10.1), AMOLED screen, no battery life and build quality issues, TW is lighter and closer to stock.
One X is a nice phone, but its just not for me, the only benefit I could see was the camera and thicker plastic.

i have a good friend with HOX. At this moment his phone is one step below mine (quite a big step)
Maybe you've got a lemon or something is wrong with your rom/kernel? I know many S3 have suffered from lag/stutter and such other related things...
I had a HOX before my s3. Both are great devices. HOX multitasking was not good at all, perhaps better in the +version. Only thing i miss a little is that screen, but i enjoy amoled too. S3 handles most games better, except tegra ones of course.

I had Desire HD for 2yrs never had a problem with screen only volume was an issue. Yes removable battery was also a reason i opted for s3 but apart from that it doesnt even come close to one X+.

I had the HOX before the S3 and switched because of the battery life mainly. I much prefer the design of the HOX and, contrary to any review you'll probably read on the web, I found the camera on the HOX quite a bit better.
I'd probably swap my S3 for a HOX+ given the chance, but I'm happy with the S3. It does so many things very well.

Your signature would suggest a degree of prejudice and would cause me to question why you would buy a Samsung phone in the first place. It would certainly suggest that yours is not the most objective of 'reviews'.
In the interests of balance, HTC have produced some decent devices, but as nice as my last HTC (HD2) was, the need to send the phone back three times in just over a year to repair screen issues and the Customer Service debacle that finally drove me away from HTC, swearing never to return, was quite enough to leave me convinced that Samsung, for all their foibles, are an infinitely better option.
The sharp drop in HTC's share price doesn't lie either...
I don't. The phone is great.
Thanks OP for your insight. Unfortunately it seems to me that you are biased. If you like a brand and its products you should stick to them.

I LOL'd at your signature.
I had the same feeling during the first 2 months of using my s3.. UI redraw every time after i exit internet browser, experienced lag here and thr but after i decided to install custom rom and kernel and remove useless bloatware, it suddenly became the best smartphone i ever owned!
This is great phone, 4 core, 1gb ram and external sd card, only thing I don't like is home button and 2 soft key, probably because I came from Galaxy Nexus which uses on screen virtual button, but everything is good
Well, maybe not, except SDS concerns me...
