This shouldn't be a surprise, ATT didn't buy Tmobile for the customers, they just want the network. Screw them both, as soon as they change anything on my plan (just signed til 2013), I'm gone.

Yeah it sure seems that way for us T-Mobile USA customers. I am sure AT&T is going to figure out some kind of way to screw us T-Mobile adopties eventualy. I mean if they have no respect for their current customers what makes anyone think us T-Mobile users will be any different.

I linked an article in another thread from tmonews, the guy broke down some interesting facts about ATT...but in the end, we're all going to lose. Sprint will get swallowed up, thus officially ending unlimited web on phones...my sister was on Alltel with a sweet plan, Verizon canned that quick.

So you have experience with ATT then? Or are you just doomsday guessing? Cause it sure seems like a lot of T-mobile customers magically know more about ATT than the actual, you know, customers.

No I am not just "doomsday guessing" as you said. I am speaking from experience. I was a AT&T customer about 3 years ago and I had a very bad experience with them. So I paid my cancellation fee and moved on. I was only with them for not quite a year and just got feed up with them. My mom just last week had her phone and my step fathers phone turned off and went to a prepaid service. My mom was a AT&T customer for 21 years, she had her home phone and cellphones through AT&T. She had her numbers disconnected cause she had been calling AT&T's costumer service and going to her local AT&t for 6 months straight to try to get a better deal on her cell phone plans cause she was paying $280 dollars a month for her service and she or my step dad did not have smartphones. They both had dumb phones and nether one of them used there phone for any kind of internet, instant messaging, or multimedia messaging. Heck my mom and step father barely new how to even use the dumb phones they had. Plus the reception they got at their house was terrible, could not even stand inside the house to talk on the phone. Both of their phones where pieces of **** and AT&T would not offer her any other dumb phones for a decent price. Like I said my mom was a customer with AT&T for 21 years. and they treated her like ****. So don't come at me with "Cause it sure seems like a lot of T-mobile customers magically know more about ATT than the actual, you know, customers" crap. I know plenty about AT&T. And I know they just want T-Mobiles network they could give a crap less about keeping their customers.

Plus one, not to mention that most tmobile customers used to be on att and ran from them.

Now here's the interesting part. That number doesn't make sense unless they had an unlimited minutes plan with more than 2 phones or a 4000 minute plan with Canada calling. So it sounds like either a salesperson talked them into an expensive plan or they chose a Canada package or were given one.
In either case, they could have changed plans. And no, I don't believe that they weren't allowed. That just sounds like bull****.

Your facts are wrong about ATT, they've been around way longer than 10 years...the U.S. government made them break up over 20 years ago because they were a monopoly..Cingular was born, and after the dust settled, ATT quietly bought them back.

I think he was meaning that AT&T Wireless had only been around 10 years. I note from your link that they were established in 1993, which would in fact be 18 years.

Hm well what are my options:
Big Red: The iPhone (metaphor for popular, expensive and useless) of the mobile service provider industry is actually getting an iPhone (the popular, expensive and useless phone from wence the metaphor came). They're still big, popular, expensive and useless. Can't go there, next...
AT&T: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, omg *wipes tears from eyes*, haha yea right...next.
T-Mobile: Is the down syndrome-stricken child of the service provider world. They have okay phones, okay service but I haven't talked to a customer service rep yet who wasn't on their 2nd day of English-As-A-Second-Language classes yet and they have no resiliancy. I told one of them that they aren't American so they have no soul. She broke down and cried on the phone. For real, I was just angry, angry at their terrible, scripted, idiot customer service.
If I had to go anywhere it'd be back to T-Mobile, at least they have an unlimited text AND unlimited data plan that doesn't throttle you after 1 or 2GB of usage. I just need to make sure that I NEVER need customer service again. Prepare for your call to be routed to India.
The only way we are going to bring the ball back into the consumers court is we all stop signing contracts.
AT&T is going to be changing their texting plans effective Jan. 23rd. They are getting rid of $5 200 txt plan and $15 1500 txt plan. The only plans they are going to have is $10 1000 txt and $20 unlimited. It seems like all carriers are making changes at the same time.
I got rid of AT&T and won't be going back. I'll stick with Sprint.

I really want to drop the carriers and ise VOIP or something else. I'm on wifi nearly everywhere I go. Do I really give a crap if I don't get a text while driving? Not really. We'll see, though. If I can make it work, I'm done letting these bastards rob me. I usually pay full price for my phones anyway.
Oo yeah I forgot to mention that AT&T is going to discontinue activation of customer owned equipment at no contract. You won't be able to activate a phone that you own with no contract. They are basically going to force people to be on contracts.

I'm probably jumping to Verizon so my wife can get an Iphone later in the year. We have three lines and one doesn't use data so that will make things actually cheaper for us because my wife has a discount through Verizon (I currently have one on SPrint)
The other thing that interests me is the Unlimited Data only plans through Tmobile. They are only 50 dollars a month and I'm wondering how good calls through Google Voice would be...if the quality isn't that bad I could just use that (since they now let you port your number to them)

Oh **** yeah very good idea.. using tmobiles VOIP... Interesting.
I luckily get a 25 or 27% discount thru sprint. I cannot remember which one it is. Gotta love job discounts.
I have been with Sprint for 10 years. I am ready to purchase a 4G device. It is between the Evo4g on Sprint & the myPhone 4G with T-Mobile. Based on the device, and reception/coverage area will dictate which carrier I go to. The price point is basically the same. About $10 per month more with Sprint.
T-Mobile is an unknown regarding coverage and Sprint is a known.
I had 2 lines on a Free & Clear, but to switch to a 4g, I would lose that plan, and I would have to drop the 2nd line as no plan available by Sprint for 2 lines is cost effective for me. Neither is one available from T-mobile.
After 10 years, I really have no allegiance to Sprint as Allegiance with any Company these days is non existent, for me anyway, and from them to me, and others for that fact.
BUT I have read that T-Mobile may be locking their devices regarding tethering, as they are charging $!4.99/mo as of now, and may lock the devices for free tethering. I don't tether often, but I would like the option to do so.
Sprint charges the $10 surcharge for the privilege.
Doesnt really matter to me, only thing im waiting to see is if Verizon is going to put a data cap on their LTE for their smartphones. If they dont im ghost.
Why brah? Sprint doesnt... Or are you chasing the new phones merely.
I'd assume this is because LTE is faster and from what I gather has a more promising future.. probably coverage expansion will be better, etc.
Wouldn't count on avoiding a cap though, and F if i'm going to pay what vzw wants for "unlimited" as compared to sprint.
Where I work and spend a huge chunk of my life these days, I get full 4G and use it to tether all my computers, more than fast enough for what I need, and I think staying with this contract will be smart over time. As long as all these companies continue their greedy practices, the value of the plan I'm on will continue to get better IMO.
When I'm month to month in a year and a half paying what I'm paying now for unlimited, I bet I won't want to switch. I'm not that concerned about getting a new phone.. I tend to hold onto my phones for a pretty long time anyway. With the dev support the EVO has (and considering it does everything I want & more anyway) I think I can get a lot of mileage out of my current situation. If I really decide I NEED a new phone somewhere down the line, I'll buy it outright and stick with what will be a cheap plan at that point

Potential Sprint and T-Mobile Merger?

I just read about this on the Washington Post. What are yall thoughts regarding a merger between T-mobile and Sprint?
Washington Post Article
Personally, I think it sucks. Not sure how it could benefit the consumer, or the manufacturers... I don't like the idea of there only being 3 big players.... I dont like the idea of GSM/CDMA joining... not even sure how that would work.
Nothing seems beneficial....
This Will Not Be Good,
for 1, which system are they really going to end up using ? Sprint is CDMA my Bet this will be bad for the consumer
Mergers like these inevitably only benefit the Company not the consumer. Ever notice that when one company raises prices the other do so as well? The only "hold mechanism" that prevents this is rigorous competition. When there is only a duo or tri-opoloy then corporate price fixing becomes a sure thing. Remember when (maybe most are not old enough) cable TV was 10 major players, Now ? 3, and what happened as a result of all the mergers and acquisitions ? higher prices and less selection.
On another note : Do you remember SamsungJohn ? and his Great announcement, I wonder if this is it. If it is .........we're getting HOSED..............
I think its very good. as long as they provide the same plan after merger
anyways, Sprint is starting 4g rollout, which is nice for future.
Rooted Samsung Vibrant with Froyo KA6
Recovery: ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2
Radio/Modem: KA6
Kernel: Stock+Voodoo
I heard about that a while ago too. Then there would be "the big three ". The question that comes to mind is, how does that benefit us? lower bills? Better phones? Better network?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Be assured this isn't about what's best for the customers. It's about what's best for the companies staying profitable.
I don't see any personal benefit from it.
Most likely they'll keep the GSM and CDMA networks and gradually migrate everyone over to LTE.
Yeah, there is NO WAY this benefits the consumer. Likely less high-end phones (dont need as many rollouts/marketing involved)... less need for prices to stay low (since if all 3 started raising prices, the consumer has no choice).
I cant articulate just how much I hate the idea of it.

Yeah I've been hearing these rumors for over a year now.
Don't take away the great plans or SIMs and maybe we'll be good.
Oh no, Sprint just likes to ruin my mobile life I remember a few years back when I got my first Nextel and discovered Howard Forums. I loved my Nextels and learned to make some good money selling customized Nextels & parting out the LE phones. Then the rumors came about the Sprint Nextel merger. They destroyed Nextel. I went back to TMobile and now this again! Capitalism at it's best.
Lets see, best customer satisfaction? T mobile
Best prices? T mobile
Acceptable service? T mobile
Family friendly plans? T mobile
Unlimited cheap data? T mobile
Open architecture? Gsm phones, unlocked phones compatibility?
T mobile
yet the company is suffering from losses.

Priblem is people arent smart, and most people stay with verizon because they have that "can u hear me now?" **** and also because they advertise like madmen.
isnt tmo owned by deutschtelecom also?
And also I dont see how a merger between 2 companies using 2 different cell technologies will be beneficial. Ifanything tmobile should juststick with offering the cheapest plans and best customer service and slowly but surely you will see people migrate over slower...
Tmobile really doesnt offer anything special anymore, nd customer service definantly went downhill from what it used to be.

Good service is geographical. I live in LA and my service is very spotty. I worked for T-mobile for almost 4.5 years and my reception changed everytime I moved. Right now it is absolutely horrible but I stay on because I have a good price.
After reading a few articles about the potential merger I get the idea that they are not looking to integrate their systems but cut the operations cost that they are incurring, at least for the near short term. In reality it is not written anywhere that if two companies merge they must use one system or another. It would be a major game changer for both of these companies to merge and still use each carriers network (talk about flexibility). Regardless if they companies merge though prices will continue to go up. Data has become such a big commodity that people are willing to pay more for it regardless of who they have.
Cliffnotes: In my opinion they will only be merging operations for the first few years to cut costs, see which provider can retain the most amount of customers and go from there.
Is sprint even as big as tmobile is? Its sad that all these companies are trying to charge as much as possible for data...
And my biggest problem with tmobile is I pay an additional 20 bucks for my data service... And its supposedly unlimited.. But the minute I hit that 5gb cap I get slowed to literally dial up speed... Thanks tmobile!!! So the data really isnt unlimited, and I cant even purchase more bandwith

Agreed, its tricky advertising regarding unlimited data. But that's the best you can get in USA . At least they don't charge for excess data past 5GB. No one offers unlimited data for that price. For example AT&T offers 2GB for $20 you are paying plus an additional $5, not to mention overage fees...

Actually it is unlimited. Speed is limited to 3/4-g until 5GB, then throttled, can't really complain for that. I'd take this over $500 or so extra per GB of ATT overage

Typical...
I left Sprint for my business account in February after 9 years and moved on to one of my family T-Mobile accounts dating back to the Voicestream days, SPECIFICALLY because I don't want the AT&T or Verizon headaches.
Being responsible for various company's telecom, data and mobile services, I've dealt with every single one of the carriers over the past 16 years, and can say without hesitation that T-Mobile has the BEST customer service. AT&T is the absolute worst, with the possible exception of Orange or Vodafone-AG.
I had dared to dream that T-Mobile and Sprint would reach an agreement, reach critical mass and survive as a viable alternative to the AT&T-Verizon hegemony.
IMHO, it is unrealistic to expect Congress to review this merger in an unbiased manner. AT&T and T-Mobile have a legion of lobbyists already "explaining" the value & importance of this transaction to our elected officials; as money flows into re-election campaign funds, elaborate "fact finding missions" and junkets to European destinations are planned & payed for; college scholarships are awarded to family members through obscure networks of shell organizations...
Then again, maybe our elected officials will surprise me... we're still going to get that hopey-changey thing someone was selling in 2008, right?
Seriously, F AT&T, they are going to ruin everything that is good about T-mobile.
Say bye-bye to phones like the G2 when AT&T is around, they're notoriously terrible about progressing stock android devices, and have always stopped the side-loading of non-market apps on every Android phone they have.
As long as they don't get rid of non contract Even More+ plans and keep my plan cheap, I don't really care, but I can only imagine prices and everything are going up. Not to mention that we're gonna more than likely lose unlimited data, and lose free tethering.
T-mobile has been fantastic to me and its a great deal, but I just have a bad feeling nothing is getting better with this except coverage. Id rather have poor coverage than everything else that AT&T is going to do to wreck a great carrier.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not with AT&T for a damn reason - they suck!!! I could go all day listing every reason why they suck but it's too nice outside. This just messed up my whole damn day. Really, will this even pass the check points? I mean they will have a monopoly for the most part on ALL gsm service in the CONUS.
It's almost April... maybe this is just an early joke, a very sick one at that and not even funny.
I hate Motorola's implemintation of Android and since those are the only decent Android phones Verizon carries - Sprint, here I come. I live in their home city anyway.

No price change t-mobile

T-Mobile released a statement that contracts will not change in a year(when att takes over) as long as you have sign one before then.

That is stupid.
Tmo sold, who do they think they are to dictate that nothing will change ?
Are you really that naive ?
Agreed, don't be so naive.

I have to agree, you shouldn't be so naive. Chances are to avoid any trouble they will honor all existing contracts, but what happens to people that are not in a contract?
What happens to those of us who are month to month? Chances are At&t will force us to switch to a new rate plan and give us a few months to do so before they cut us off completely.
Wow. Such hate for AT&T. I don't get it.
I had been a happy customer of theirs for more than 2 decades (Original AT&T Wireless -> Cingular -> AT&T). My plan from the original ATT Wireless was grandfathered in and survived two corporate takeovers. In other words, I was out of contract more than 10 years ago and they never forced me to upgrade or change.
The only reason I switched to T-Mo is the phone and price. I needed a new plan since I could NOT get data into my grandfathered plan. AT&T had really expensive pricing for data, so we switched.
I am actually looking forward to going back. AT&T service was and is really professional. (Cingular's was NOT).
Disclaimer, I do NOT work for them, and I own no AT&T stock. Just stating my own direct experience.

My wife and I have logged many hours with AT&T's support voice menus, scripts, learned the thick accents, and have many of the responses memorized. I get paid quite well by the hour and it insults me why I should pay to get the runaround by thick layers of departments for which AT&T is famous.
I was a happy Cingular customer. AT&T bought them. I left for obvious reasons. Now I'm with Tmobile. My recent experience with AT&T over Uverse (oh what could possibly go wrong...today?) is likely an indicator of what I can expect yet again. It took 6 technicians from AT&T to finally replace a cable of a wrong impedance (I may have an BSEE, but its highly counterproductive talking to scripted tech support who will punish scientific arguments.) No thanks. Can you feel the hate dripping?
The Death Star strikes again. Crushing the rebel forces one by one...
No price change until:
A) you need a new contract
B) you are not under contract
C) when you want to add a feature not included in your contract
D) ATT decides to cancel your current plan and offers you a new plan will less features for the same money.
I agree with the approve poster... there will be a GSM monopoly. GSM is a requisite for all international travelers.
Oh Ma Bell, the irony.

This. My credit sucks. If I think what may happen actually happens, there goes my only chance of actually having service for my beautiful cellphone, unless I go to cricket, which makes me vomit just thinking about using a huawei. Im scared.

Maybe this is not hate but it sure is not love either. Just saying
Guys, you shouldn't worry about pricing.
1. AT&T may have paid for it, but they don't completely own it until the DOJ and FCC do what they need to do. They can still deny it.
2. AT&T wouldn't be dumb enough to piss off current T-Mobile customers to the point where they cancel their contracts, I mean they did just shell out $25 billion in cash (+ $14 billion in stocks or something) for the company, they wouldn't risk losing all of the profit right away.
Plans will be grandfathered. That's a fact. I've worked for the blue devil and they are good on that note. However how will this affect upcoming android phones? With all their sideloading app crappy. Smh. Sprint may be my last resort. I may work for them but I do loathe them..

I'm very worried about this. Granted, it may be some time before these changes actually take effect, but I for one do not currently have a contract, and that is the sole reason I switched from at&t to tmo. Now after purchasing 4 phones at full price so that I could keep my cheaper monthly rate, I'm fairly certain that at&t is going to force me to go with one of their plans. I like my unlimited data for 25 bucks a month. Will at&t do that for me? Past experience says a hearty, resounding, "no".

Well it looks like if you stay with ATT/T-Mobile, you will have to get a new handset due to the AWS spectrum.

Not for those of us with Vibrants since they are capable of both AWS spectrums.
AT&T giving a twelve month window for the merger to take place is extremely optimistic. Maybe if the FCC and justice department was put in place by the GOP. We are probably looking at 16-18 months for approval given Ma Bell's monopoly history.

AT&T is not so much after the T-Mobile business or customers, it is more desirous of the T-Mobile AWS spectrum. See Confirmed:
AT&T wants to use T-Mobile's AWS spectrum for LTE buildout" over on Engadget. AT&T have proved over and over again they could not care less about customers. So do I think they would be foolish enough to "piss off" T-Mobile customers? Sure in fact many of the T-Mobile current customers have already been "pissed off" by AT&T and are on TMO because of that!

It does appear to be that way. I had planned on purchasing on upgrade the LG G2X and the new lg tablet but now it is up in the air. What a time for T mobile to spring this. I got away from AT&T 14 years ago(have been with T Mobile the whole time) and do not want their level of service and pricing again. I guess Verizon is about the only choice for me as I certainly do not want Sprint. I wonder if T mobile will continue to roll out some of the new phones from LG one of which is rumored to be Vanilla android, or will this just coast till the deal is completely done.

Well, you never know. From my assumption, they only purchased T-Mobile for their 4G towers, they are going to use the existing ones to boost their own 4G LTE network to most of the country (and by most, I mean like 97 percent) including rural areas. Head over to Engadget, what might happen in one year might be interesting.. I am definitely not a fan of AT&T but theoretically their plan seems solid.
Just my ideas on it. Take them as you want..
Grandfathered
I'm just wondering just how long AT&T is going to allow my the TMO unlimited calling, unlimited data, $10 HotSpot plan to stay in force? Debating on riding out existing contract and then updating to Vibrant 4G and re-up before they stick it to me....or maybe that will be too late because it'll already be under AT&Ts BS data contracts.
I was with AT&T for years until they made it clear they could care less if I stayed with them or not. They would offer you the world to switch but if you were already a customer, they wouldn't offer you squat to reup.
The only good news potentially is that TMO has notoriously bad reception in rural areas (in Texas anyway) where AT&T is much better.

The USA will approve AT&T's buyout. AT&T says yes when Tmobile says no to unlimited government wiretapping. With Tmobile, they always say, "sorry" when records or access is wanted. The green light for this was long in the works.

FCC wants your feedback on Tmobile buyout by AT&T

Guys,
FCC is looking for the opinions from general people like us on the T-mobile-ATT deal. Checkout the links for more info :

http://phandroid.com/2011/04/30/fcc-wants-your-input-on-the-t-mobile-buyout/
This is a great opportunity to fight the greedy At&t and stop the GSM monopoly in USA
Thanks for the heads up! Done.
I think its a bunch of bs. Its just them making us think we have a voice in this whole ordeal; in the end
this is big business and it all boils down to dollars. Just a masquerade.

I think I posted 56 mins before you did
Let's hope this deal fails
I honestly dont care. I moved to tmobile to get away from the lies, trickery, and robbery. Turns out they are a company just like att with worse service.
I was made many promises before my contract, not one of them were true. Now I'm locked in my contract and they won't even try to make anything right even though all the proof given. They just say, "sorry there is nothing we can do for you, and we are not obligated to fulfill the promises the representatives gave you. We are truly sorry you were lied to."
I've heard that line 8 times from managers! I've given up, I'm finishing up my contract or canceling when the money becomes available and moving to verizon. At least ill have the services I pay for.
So far I've noticed that most companies dont care about right or wrong, only who gets the benefits. Sooner this is learned, the less hard life will be.

AT&T may have bad customer service, but their coverage sure wrecks T-Mobile's.
I borrowed my friend's SIM a few weeks ago when I was going on a trip to Washington DC (from Dallas), and I wanted to have 3G where we went.
My mom's Vibrant, was constantly losing 3G signal.
My Vibrant, running on the 1900 band on AT&T, lost 3G signal ONCE for about 15 seconds, then came back.
Only thing with AT&T is, that their plans are expensive
(funny story, I went to a AT&T store to see how much a plan would be with them, and apparently, their texting plan offers unlimited Mobile to Mobile (who uses land lines except doctors, and offices?), and for 700 minutes, unlimited texting (with basically unlimited minutes), and 2GB data (never go over 1GB anyways, and I save $5!), I would pay $150 for 2 lines. That is $110 off what I pay now with T-Mo, and that's a DAMN good save)
and their customer service is bad.
They aren't that bad, and I am switching to AT&T because of that story.
