What's your average 3G speed? - EVO 4G General

I'm running into a problem with my phone, and just want a little extra knowledge before I start busting Sprints balls.
What is your average 3G speed using the "Speedtest.net Speed Test" app? Please post in Kilo(bits).

You seem overly worried about this. I would of kept your questions in the original thread. They are ordering you a new phone. Keep your original thread updated with your experiences.
Everyone's 3G speed is going to be different based on location and signal strength / radio version.

But everyone's speed can be averaged out, and if I'm below the average, living in Philadelphia, there's def something wrong. I just want to prove to myself I'm not crazy.

I wish it was that easy, but it isn't. Electronics like a radio don't "fizzle" out. They work and then they don't. You want anecdotal evidence to prove to Sprint you have a defective phone when you don't have a defective phone. You just have bad luck.
Do some searching on how cell phone towers choose which phones go on which tower and how network speeds work before going out on a limb. I think it's a rather simple explanation really why your speeds stink: bad reception. Especially in an urban sprawl city.

Seriously, can you go back to your original 4 posts and let me try to collect what I want? You're seriously wasting precious mySQL table real estate here. Is it really that hard to ask for someone to post speeds, whether it means something or not.
Quit being argumentative.

i would like to also know what the big thing about it is
i'm in seattle area which cannot get the update at the moment
or at least from what i know i can't
how can we check what pri we have?
it is supposed to control how our phones connect to different towers based on where we are. some say it gives them better 3g speeds, some say it does nothing.
you can check your pri by going into settings->about phone->software version.
menu-settings-about phone-software information..... i believe
I just bought mine and it has 1.40 but it also has 2.2 built in so no root.

Thanks I thought that was how to check it but I couldnt find it. I am on CM6 though so some things are just diffrent.

I tend to agree, but obviously it does something since they pushed out the update from 1.34 to 1.40 pri.
it depends on the area. some areas ... literally changes very little to nothing. some areas see increased 3g speeds.
I dont agree it is a placebo effect for everyone but i would guess a majority of the areas benefit little besides having the knowledge your phone is truely up to date. For those areas that it does benefit you could see 2x+ speeds from 3g

Current Thoughts on Incredible Radio Firmware Versions

Regarding the Incredible Radio Firmware 2.15, has anyone used all of these enough to know if the 11.19 really is the best as compared to 9.01 and 7.28?
There are so many conflicting reports, I would like to know if there have been any reliable results determined by someone who really knows how to compare them.
Thanks.

I would also like some info on this. Anyone knowledgable in this area?
I don't know the first thing about radios....please enlighten us.
I tried all three with the phone in the same location. I did two tests with speed test and i watched the signal in dbs. I determined that based on my location (Tampa) the 7.28 worked the best in my location. Just my $0.02.

Check out the Radio Threads
FWIW, there are at lease two very good threads devoted to radios.
Many opinions and much anecdotal evidence is found in them - they are worth a studious look.
Read the entire threads.
Why? experiences by radio vary widely based on geography, ROM, PRL, and a host of other things.
I'd say bottom line, there is not a noticeable difference to even bother thinking about it.
Spend hours reading through, I've read a lot (entire threads) and tried them. Some people say GPS finds quicker, some say slower, some say better signal, worse, faster, same, blah blah
You'll hear so much if you read everything, but there is not a significant number going in one direction.
The 7.28 does just dandy.

Exactly, all those conflicting words to describe the exact same firmware on the exact same hardware, and often the same ROM. Flashing radio firmware is probably the riskiest thing you can do to the Inc. A corrupt ROM without a backup, you loose your apps and contacts. Too bad. A corrupt or mistake with firmware, and the phone will never ever power on again. Period.
Scary stuff.
In my area, 11.19 is the best.
It really just depends.
Just try them all out for a few days each and see which one you like best.
In my area 7.28 works the best. I had incredibly slow 3g with the other radios. Just install one and experiment with it people get mixed results
Results may vary........
Been running 7.28. Haven't felt the need to risk changing it especially with all the conflicting advice.

There are so many conflicting reports because there is no hard and fast answer to a question such as the one you posted. The same baseband version is going to give dramatically different performance on to pieces of identical hardware due to external variables. When it comes to radio performance, relying on the anecdotes of others wouldn't be the smartest thing to do and a waste of time.
Try each version for yourself and see what works best in your particular circumstance.
Grrr
I too am itching to get an updated radio. I am usually somewhere between -85 and -92. BUT, the 11.19 stories lead more to the negative, so that is out; and the 9.02 ... well, its been out for 4 months, and no actual update.
As much as it pains me, I think we need to just sit and wait until an Incredible radio is released instead of these Evo ones.

Although you are obviously correct, it really shouldn't be that way. We are all using the same radio hardware. If certain radio firmware causes my radio to connect better to one verizon tower and worse to another verizon tower, that indicates a problem with verizon somewhere. A properly built radio+firmware should connect as good as possible to any tower.
It seems that generally people have better GPS connection with the newer firmwares... but GPS does not connect to verizon towers.
Perhaps some of the verizon towers need updated firmware.

Same here.
Also, as a test for 7.xx and 11.19:
My mom and brother both have DIncs. Theirs are the SLCD and the 7.xx radio, mine is AMOLED and 11.19 radio. I open up the setting to look at signal strength, and mine (11.19) is always highest.
*EDIT*
Also, 11.19 tends to read the actual signal strength more efficiently that the others, i.e. it changes from 3G to 1x when in weak service, something the other 2 radios are much slower to do.
In my area 7.28 has been the best. I noticed large decreases in signal strength when using gps with 11.19.
Overall, I did not notice much difference between the three, but I know that 7.28 works and it eliminates a variable when troubleshooting.
Im in WI and 11.19 is the way to go in my area. Went from -95 db with the stock radio to -60 with 11.19. It also improved my battery life and 3G speed.

Sprint, Me, or My Phone...?

I've searched numerous forums/posts/threads for help, and I now come tail between legs, waiving the white flag! I give up! I need help!
I've noticed my download speeds have slowed dramatically over the past few weeks. What once was (4g) 4-5 down & 1-1.5 up, is now 1-1.5 down & 1 up. Real world experience has drawn me to these figures, but I've also confirmed similar speeds with speedtest. (Yes, I know speedtest isn't 100% accurate) I've tested speeds over several days, using the same tower. Each time, I was approximately 200 yards away, outside with a direct view of the tower, with full signal strength. Testing was done between 1 & 3 am. I used speedtest and downloaded the same pdf from my email to compile my unofficial info. Out of curiosity, I did the same tests on 3g and found almost identical results (slightly slower up speeds).
In my pursuit to find an answer, I've tried many things. I updated my PRL (01120). I found a post that showed how to increase 4g signal strength (-110) and increase refresh rate. I've called Sprint and had them check the tower (nothing was wrong per the CS rep). I've rebooted. I've toggled airplane mode. I've odin'd older and newer modems. So far, nothing has worked.
In one of the posts I read, I found a list of Sprint/Samsung's "#" codes. These allow you to view/change various things in your phone. I dialed ##786# and found my baseband ending in EE03 (Correlates with current modem). My wimax was EC04. I then dialed *#1234# and it showed samsung's firmware. My PDA ended in EB13 and my phone s: was EE03.
My frustrations were only exacerbated when my buddy on T-mobile stood next to me and pulled constant 10+ speeds!
I've read numerous posts from people in other markets pulling speeds from 7-12... I'd settle for my 4-5 again! Side note: this is a valley wide (Las Vegas) problem for me... I chose to focus testing on 1 particular tower that had given me good speeds in the past.
So...
1: Am I effin crazy? Should I be happy to have crappy 4g because many have none?
2: Could it be a combination of rom/modem/kernel that is causing my issues?
3: Could the discrepancies between the build modes (or what appears to be) I got from the "#" codes be an issue?
4: Is sprint BS'n me? Could they actually have 4g issues and that be the cause?
5: Is there anything else I can do/try to improve my signal?
I know slow speeds aren't the end of the world, but I have a job that allows me to play on my phone quite a bit. I always use wifi at home, but would love to be able to use 4g @ work again.
Thanks in advance for any help! I know it was a long read! I just want my epic back... I can't fathom going back to my POS hero! Lol!

You are not alone in this. I do not have an explanation but there have been several threads here and over at android central of people on Sprint complaining of slow speeds and whatnot. Some people believe that a bunch of roaming agreements Sprint had with some other carriers have dropped off over the past few months and many people that once had great service are now getting crappy service. Since you specifically are complaining of 4G speeds this may not be the case for you, but you certainly are not alone when it comes to people all over the country recently complaining of slower speeds overall.
Mine just went back to normal levels late yesterday, otherwise I can also vouch for about 1.5 dl/ul speeds all weekend.
ee03
try installing a different modem from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123103 try ef02 first
My speed has been **** lately also. Even pandora has begun skipping. If this doesn't improve, I will not be renewing my contract when my phone upgrade is available.

I had problems on the ee03 modem at first when i went to ef02 then auto updated to ef10 my 3g speeds increased to a point in which I could play netflix consistently 4g improved,, also use ##3282# to change 4g connection times.

This seems to be on the right track to me. Do you know anyone else who has an Epic (or any other 4g phone for that matter) preferably running stock? See if they come up with similar speeds at the same place at the same time.
Barring that, I would try to put your phone back to bone stock Froyo and see what you get. Not sure how fluent you are with this, but just boot into CWM and backup. Then use Odin to get to stock Froyo. Don't install any apps, or do anything else to it. Test it out on 4G for a while in the same time and place. If that does not work, try some of the 4G fixes listed in these forums.
If you get decent 4G speeds with this configuration, you know it is something specific to your phone (and more specifically to your software) and you can restore the backup and try replacing just the modem or other tweaks. If you cant get decent speeds running stock, then just restore your backup and curse Sprint and wait

Personally I have had such fluctuation that I think Sprint is holding out. I'm sure that they have the capability of limiting data connectivity and speeds and I have heard rumors of them doing this in the past. I wouldnt put anything past Sprint at this point. Maybe give them a call and ask then why you are paying a "premium data" charges with the data speeds are no better than with the Hero. I had some better expierences with my old Moment before I changed to the Epic.

I dont think "official" is the answer. I just got my dad a brand new Epic and it's completely stock and it's slower than mine and I'm on EF02/EF10 GB. I may do a side by side video of the two phones and see just how much of a difference there is.

After you update your modem go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925898 and update your 4g and 3g connection times. Worked for me.
So here's an update...
First... thanks for all the help/suggestions!
I had already increased my signal strength and refresh rates to no avail. I tried several different modems out and all had the same results. Averaging about 1.5 up and 1 down. Given these findings, I figured it prob wasn't me or my phone. I called CS again, and this time the rep confirmed that the tower in my area was the problem. I asked if it could be a city wide issue and she couldn't confirm this. Being a paramedic, I know most of our zip codes, and they all have issues!
So... final conclusion is: 4g in Vegas sucks right now! Boo!

I'm in philly suburbs and my data dropped a little over a month ago as well. I was getting 1.5 d, 0.3-0.5 up in 3g and 7-8 d, 3 up in 4g. But recently, I have only been getting 0.5-0.8 d in 3g and 3-4 d in 4g. It's some straight up BS

[Q] Signal strength drops and semi-random reboots?

Okay, here's my problem. I've got my Samsung Epic up and running (finally), but for two annoying bugs: or it might be one bug with two parts.
One, the signal strength "wobbles" a lot, going from no bars (but still holding service) to almost full bars. I assumed at first that this is just a quirk of the preferred tower configuration around my home.
Part two is more annoying. Sometimes it will, apparently somewhat randomly, lose all signal, which prompts the phone to reboot. Actually it's not a TRUE reboot, it's just the half-reboot that happens when the Android shell crashes: return to boot animation, then reload everything. Often, it'll do this several times in a row. It was doing it horribly when I was running the AOSP version 4 ROM, so I flashed back to a semi-stock configuration (stock ROM plus ClockworkMod). But it's still doing it. Modem version is EC05, and I'm running on a Verizon MVNO. Can anyone offer suggestions?
Try updating your modem to the EI22 released modem and get on an EI22 ROM.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Yeah, EI22 fixes most of the signal dropouts for me. Just update your modem.
On EH17 my bars would randomly go to 0 and data would drop out even though I'm parked on a repeater here at work, getting -76db signal (that's really, really good).
i just got a new (or probably refurb) phone from best buy after my original broke. (thank you black tie) and this new stock phone does this same stuff you are describing. this phone sucks! reboots, lock ups, bluetooth doesnt work, keyboard skips.. .what a joke.
so should i call sprint and try to get something other than an epic or go to best buy and have them order me another one? any suggestions?
Well, following the advice upthread I've gone ahead and installed the stock EI22 update for the Epic. We'll see how it turns out.

Black Tie is supposed to give you new phones. Keyboard skips are Samsung's error. Flash a custom ROM with the fixes implemented by the DEVs here.
Followup: after flashing the Sprint stock EI22 ROM, I'm still getting wacky signal strength fluctuations, but it's stopped resetting, which makes me happy. I'd be happier if I could get it to stick with the strong signal, but I'll live.
Try using an app like Network Info or Tasker to see if your phone is hopping towers while the signal is fluctuating. Maybe a PRL update will help.

Followup: after flashing the Sprint stock EI22 ROM, I'm still getting wacky signal strength fluctuations, but it's stopped resetting, which makes me happy. I'd be happier if I could get it to stick with the strong signal, but I'll live.

It could be maintenance or a tower failing near you.

Black Tie is supposed to give you new phones. Keyboard skips are Samsung's error. Flash a custom ROM with the fixes implemented by the DEVs here.

im sure you are right, but doesn't anyone think it should just work from the store? i know its a novel idea but i think top notch phones should work right out of the box.

Yes it should. Unfortunately the keyboard skips have yet to be addressed by Samsung. There is a maintenance update being worked on. Some people are still getting reboots with the new OTA for Gingerbread but not many. So maybe that will be addressed as well as the keyboard skips.

I'll try those--I was trying to use CellID Info for that purpose, but it hasn't reflected any changes at all between high signal and low signal. So far Network Info II isn't either, but we'll see. I did try a PRL update the other night, to no avail.

That's possible. God knows I'm out in the middle of nowhere, so quality of service probably isn't a high priority. I haven't seen it reflected in other Verizon devices I've looked at the last couple days, but then I haven't exactly been looking at them that closely.
My signal does seem a lot more consistent today--right now I'm stuck at 2-3 out of 6 bars, but it's holding that constantly with very little variation, less even than I would think was normal. Maybe it was a network problem after all and not just my device. That would be nice.
Edit: Looks like I spoke a little too soon, as I just had one complete signal dropout. But it's still better than it was.
That could be when they just swapped out amplifiers at the tower that was giving you trouble. Also it seems Sprint service is subject to a lot of dead zones. I got a big dead spot in my house.

I'm not on Sprint, it's flashed to a Verizon MVNO, so I'm on VZW towers.
Strangely, I've seen my AT&T Android phone lose signal too a couple times today--which is bizarre, because it almost never does that. AT&T around here is only 2G, and slow 2G at that, but the signal is very reliable. Just enough to make me wonder if something weird is going on locally.
In case anyone's still interested in this: it's still doing it, so it's pretty clearly the phone. However when I took it into a building where there's normally poor signal, it stopped doing it and held the stronger signal. Is it possible that because this is a Sprint radio, it's trying to default to 1900 MHz, instead of the stronger 850 signal?

Modem tests

Hey people, i spent the majority of today testing every modem under the sun on my s3 running paranoid android. i am from melbourne and these are the results in kb/s. Hope it helps someone who is contemplating changing modem. "lol no" means that i couldnt get a signal and "nope" is when i had one lower than 100.
The winner was easily poemb1. Best modem for my area (melbourne near the city)

Whilst I appreciate you are trying to help, I must point out that these results may not be accurate because in the time it took to flash the modems and start a test the network could have seen a spike in traffic which would slow the speed down.
I'm not saying these results are useless just use them with caution. If it was me I would have done multiple tests at different times and posted the averages for a more accurate comparison.

I had each modem on the phone for roughly 10 minutes to let everything settle and i did multiple tests. The speeds i have listed are not the maximum speeds, but rather the rough average. And each test was done in the same spot in my house.
Can i flash different modem firmware while on stock rom without root?
Is this GSM network?

Again, thanks for the effort however, it won't help anyone but you. Your next door neighbour could have the same phone, same network but get the exact opposite results as you. There are far too many variables that affect these results.
You're heart is in the right place and your efforts are greatly appreciated. I wish more members were like you - but unfortunately, it won't really help anyone

Yes,via Odin, make sure you get an Odin flashable file and not a cwm .zip
Pointless for anyone on a different network different country and even a different mast .
As you say Best modem for my area (melbourne near the city).
Thread title should reflect that any user taking the results of this test will find in most cases their own tests will be different .

Thankyou to everyone telling me the same thing over and over again. I have received a couple of messages thanking me for my post and requesting help, but i shouldn't have posted it because many factors play a part. I was also advised that i should have just posted this into the s3 australia thread instead.
It seems that if only a few people are able to benefit from a post, it is then rendered pointless by the community.
I would like to request that a moderator please close this thread.
If a thread helps 1 person, then its not pointless.
That is not the case here though. We were polite and grateful when we pointed out why this would (unfortunately) not help anyone. We're sorry you couldn't take that graciously

You might have kept the tests the same, but the network won't, congestion will slow you down, a dodgy mast can make speeds fluctuate, even things beyond anyone's control like atmospheric pressure, temperature and any obstacles are all things that can skew the results and give other people different results
Keep it in mind that this list is incomplete and there are many more variables, the only way you can test the modem is in laboratory conditions.
I'm gonna try poemb1 though I'm from sydney. What network are you with?

I'm with kogan, but it runs through telstra's towers.
