Oh dear.
After thinking that software was causing an alignment problem (pretty sure MultiIE DID make it worse), I reset the device to factory settings and it still happened. Each day I needed to recalibrate the machine several times, making it unusable.
So it is in the post to HTC Europe for repair and I am without my MDA Compact!
Let's hope they fix it and send it back soon.
I am having the same problem with my O2 mini on which I have to realign the screen every hour or so. I have done many hard resets but there was no improvement. I have tried many ROMs as well. So I suspect its a hardware problem. Any suggestions apart from sending it to the service centre?
I'm having the same problem, I think our only solution is to take our JAMs to a service center
me too... but already pass my warranty period~!!!! da*n :!: some1 can tell me how much to fix this problem?? oh, again,
I think it's better
Maybe a little to early to say but I just got my Magician back from the HTC Europe centre.
They have simply re-flashed the Rom back to 1.12 (May 2005). When I first unpacked it I thught the screen was out of alignment again and rang to complain.
The thing is, I have since set it, played around with it for a few hours and it seems absolutely fine.
Since all my testing previously was with the November ROM (1.13), and the problem started around December time, I wonder if it's a problem with the new November Rom?
I'll keep you posted on what happens over the next few days.
Yes it was too early
Seems to be a problem still. What happens is it loses alignment after being switched off for more than a couple of minutes.
HTC are ringing me back soon.
It's going back again!!
HTC are taking it back for another look.
Observations
I have been living with the problem, and over the period have noticed that sometimes problem is not at all there, and sometimes its pretty bad.
Interestingly, when the problem crops up, if I press the screen a little harder with my finger, the screen just returns to normal alignment. So now I just press the screen instead of doing a screen alignment - takes only 1 second.
yeah~! same exacly here... just pressed it hard then it will back to normal but sometimes not, and still, im not happy with the quality of xda mini... for such an expensive toy, this \things should not happen to too many ppl.
thx,... waiting for your update... and pls let us know the cost...
Yippeee - it's fixed
Just got it back again from HTC Europe.
They have replaced the LCD and I now have perfect screen alignment again. I can even turn it off and the problem doesn't come back!
Very, very happy.
Repair was under warranty so it didn't cost me anything.
HTC have provided very good service to me on this. I am very impressed that they continued to listen and fixed the problem for me.
mini screen misalign
just started experiencing this about a week now, very iritating, and a bright dot appeared on my mini at the lower left edge, its especially obvious wen playing a video with dark or black scenes coz the dot is really bright
i still have warranty til may16 i hope i dnt have to bring it to the service cnter
Okay here's my fun little scenario that I searched for and hadn't come across anyone with the same scenario. Phone was working fine one day and next it would only display a white screen, thought something went wrong with the software. Tried a reset, tried a hard reset, tried a flash started getting some screen showing and then distorting and whiteing out also on startup would get crackled sound. Tried a few more resets and so on. Removed the battery for 3 seconds-20mins-8plus hours still having a problem. Distortion gets worse when pushing the battery in the back it seems and will eventually just go to white screen. Now I had bought a new battery recently and just for kicks threw it in, seemed to eliminate my problems. Except now as I just for kicks again am charging my old battery in the cradle along with the phone and the new battery it seems to be having similar issue although it hasn't been nearly as bad as before. Now I just took the "bad" battery off the charger and it seems to be just fine in the cradle at this moment, nevermind it's flickering again. Is more poor little Hermes on it's death bed, please tell me no. I paid $200 on it being used from a company who only warranties it for 14 days, I am almost at 30 now. I bought an warranty with it being used and all however they wont help me untill I reach 60 days I guess so I may be out of luck for 30 days before I might get it fixed or my money back. Sucks too because I switched to the $40 data plan with AT&T about 5 days ago and now I guess will be paying for something I can't really use. Okay it seems as though with random pressure on the back seems to cause it. I'm leaning towards some sort of a battery contact issue perhaps? What should I do to clean/fix the contacts?
For those that wonder why I just seemed to rant about my broken phone and seemingly figured out the problem on my own and are wondering why I am still posting all of it the answer is simple: To benefit someone else who may be experienceing the same problem or who may read it and have the problem down the road they will know what they should do. That and it's late and I'm tired
the screen issue is known to be caused by the D-pad connector coming undone
Okay I had run into that as a possibility however would that affect the sound to make it crackle? Also in experimenting some more this morning with the "old" battery in place it seems to be much much more sensitive to pressure, almost to the point of holding it in the palm of your hand causes the screen to go nutty and wash out to white screen and come back etc.. However with the new battery in its much more stable and I need to apply more pressure in order for it to reproduce these symptoms. I know you've been a member for longer than me and you also work for AT&T however my gut feeling is something else may be the culprit here. I tried recording a video using my backup phone last night except I couldn't seem to get it uploaded to show what the screen is doing. Oh well I really want use of the phone but I also don't want to void the warranty, namely my extra warranty which I can't file a claim for the next month.
Firstly let me say this:...... I have a phone that has had to go back once because of a weird problem - so it might be "one of those phones " (the prob WAS fixed by a new board from HTC but thats another story !)
Here's the prob. Today when I was typing a text the back light kept adjusting up and down. This has NOT happened before So I did some tests:
1) Its to do with the autoadjust feature (not a prob when its OFF)
2) All is OK UNTIL you start to type this is how I spotted it typing a text. The backlight was going up and down - I thought my eyes were going!!!
ATTEMPTED RESOLUTION:
Fristly I did a soft reset......(prob still the same)
I down loaded LUMOS, which shows actual numbers for the light sensor,
Here's what I found......
It moves up and down a bit then settles, in a dark area its on say 3 or 0 but when I type on the screen it goes up and down like a yoyo ! ie 3,79,120,3,0 if I stop typing it settles on 3 or 0. AND THAT IN A NUT SHELL IS I "THINK" THE PROB !
"The light sensor seems to be affected by typing."
I never noticed this before so this may be a fault.
LUMOS seems to cope slightly better than win software with this and I can get around this by turning the sensor off, but if its faulty BACK it GOES....(AGAIN)
The last prob did my head in. I love this phone but I'm not sure if I got a touchy one !(pardon the pun)!
ANY HELP/THOUGHTS VERY GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED
Further update - CAUSE !
I have found out the cause !
It happens when screen taps (sound) is turned on and is FINEwhen it is off. I only tuned this on last week !
SO what they heck this is some software bug perhaps - any thoughts ?
Thanks so much !
First my touch hd died suddenly two months before one year is over. So I sent in for repair and paid $20 for some sort of fee on the top of shipping in. When I get it back, I thought everything is doing fine. Then suddenly the screen started acting weir. It turns on sometimes but sometimes it won't. I tried master reset. I tried to contact Htc. And I even try to hit it since I was pretty upset getting this lemon.
I happen to have to travel to Taiwan and I took it to a cell phone store hoping they can fix it since it is a Taiwan phone. I got it back today and they said it will cost $170 to fix. And they said that I got liquid in. I have never let it get close to any water or liquid. Obviously they said the sensor was activated. (I don't even know there is a sensor for water).
Anyway, my phone now can call in but screen turns on when it likes to. While I am now playing with it. I turn all the auto backlight off, including with battery or power connected. And I also turn off the auto backlight sensor. Somehow for almost two hours, I can turn on anytime I want to and off any time. I do not how long it will last. If this is the problem, that means the software of auto backlight off has bugs. I hope this helps those who are like me lost some sleep over this HTC nightmare. I do not expect it is fixed at this point. May be I am just lucky that it stays controllable for the past two hours. Good luch y'all.
After 4 months of flawless work, the lower part of the screen (a strip several millimeters from the edge) suddenly stopped responding properly!
E.g., all buttons in this area (including launcher/phone/+ on home screen) either don't work at all, or sometimes activate after a while when strongly pressed with the thumb (orientation doesn't matter).
Just two hours before they responded fine to the index finger.
Also, I've noticed that when I "multi-touch" the lower line in a file browser with two fingers, it works nice! Buttons are too small for that, however
I first tried to restore backup, but it didn't help, of course.
Has anybody had the same problem?? I guess it's a warranty case ...
I would agree, it's probably a hardware problem that you'll have to bring your phone in for service to get fixed.
I'm having that same problem my self, but just now and then. What helped with me is that I press the upper left corner of the phone with my other hand and then the lower part works fine, so i think i should get a new digitizer or its just loose connector.
im having the same problem , i have put up with it for the past few weeks and its driving me nuts now. today i did a factory reset which made no difference , i called htc who didnt sound a bit suprised by my phone call it gets picked up tomorrow morning to go for repair so the question is ... is this a common fault? and how the hell am i gonna cope without my hero in my pocket ?
Yeah happened to mine last week, a few have had the same issue where it's just the launcher bit not responding. Although the good news is that I'm getting it back tomorrow though so it's good times!
I had the same problem with my touchscreen (after a month or so!)
Mine got picked up thursday by HTC and I just checked the tracking site and they just recieved it.
I wonder how long it's going to take
Visited their service center last week.
They've immediately replaced my screen with a new one without any ado. Now everything works as before!
BUT a friend of mine who bought his Hero in January is having similar problems now...
It is a common problem according to HTC.
Mine was repaired in just 10 days.
Same problem here, did htc said anything about this problem? is it a common fault?
thank you
I said it in the post above yours.
ah yes, right, thank you

If they acknowledge it officially, couldn't you provide a link please?
i gave mine last week to repair, they returned to me unfixed. on the paper stated that they only updated the software, what a dumb this htc guys. need to go back and tell them again the same story. im wasting my time only for this. wtf
I recently had this problem. The 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen wouldn't respond, took it into T-Mobile who said I'd have it back within about 7 to 10 days... 3 weeks later I got a text saying I could collect my phone...
On the paper sheet it says they've replaced the lens.. Which I can see they have as before I had a miniscule hairline scratch near the top.
They also mention a software update (1.0.0.A6288)
Either way it works nicely now.
I've recently experienced the same issue - the lower part of the screen, the one where the LauncherPro icons usually are stopped responding to touch. If I press really hard it works sometimes, but it's pretty annoying. I didn't sit on the phone or drop it recently, it just stopped working all of a sudden.
Is there anything I can do, as the phone is out of warranty ?
HTC South Africa gave me a new hero after I took mine in for the 3rd time. Hardware problem. Very happy with their service.
i have this exact same problem, is the only solution to send to htc? >_> Cuz my warranty's out already unfortunately... i flashed my hero to CyanogenMod 7 and it seems to have helped, but still not completely responsive... I also have a problem where at times i completely lose control of my touch screen where the spots i touch seem to respond to opposite sides of the screen... anyone else?
Remove battery, Remove sim card. put a dryer on the htc logo for about 40 mins. put the phone under a heavy object. Let it dry for about 15 mins and your fixed.
^ wtf do u mean?... are u just being a gimp...

Picked up my Vibrant on launch day and it's been great through the weekend, now about an hour ago the home key seems to be flaking out on me. The other three keys are still as responsive as ever, but I have to hold my thumb perfectly still for about 5 seconds before it registers, if at all. Is anyone seeing issues like this on their Galaxy? Or on similar hardware?
Dosent seem to be anything physically interfering, and no there were not any drops, falls or accidental sittings. I'll swing into a tmo store tomorrow, but figured I check in with you folks until then.
Doesn't happen on mine, probably defective device sadly .
Mines working great also... Sorry to hear
Thanks for the responses, unfortunately it looks like I'm not alone...

Tried restarting?
I did, a few times. Nothing.
I had the same problem. The home button would not respond to multiple touches, so I completely drained and charged the battery, now it works without any problems. I'm not sure if its fixed completely or just a temporary fix but so far so good.
Had the same exact problem! the next day after i got the phone i noticed that the home button would not work right, had to press it multiple times while the rest of the buttons seemed fine. I just went back to the store and replaced the phone. Everything seems to be working great now. I bet its a manufacturing screw up seeing how many people have the same issue. I would just replaced the phone and hope your next one doesnt eat sh*t
Any updates on this? I didn't have the problem until today, now my home key only works when not lit up. So if the keys are lit up and I want to use it I have to wait for the phone to go idle after a second and then hit it... I will call radio shack tomorrow and see if I can do an in-store return or since I ordered it online if I will have to mail it back, I will call the one far away so I can see if I just show up in store and fail to tell them I ordered it online if they will just do a swap for me there, and I can try that at tmobile as well... it's a 1 for 1 trade off so they aren't losing out (on much)...
I have the same issue. Sometimes it goes away but it always come back, even after factory reset. It seems like a shoddy manufacturing process. Just be glad you aren't a t-mobile employee as I have to ship it back before getting a replacement for the broken phone they sold me.
Sorry for reviving such an old post, but I stumbled on a solution of sorts to this issue of unresponsive capacitive buttons which I can reproduce 100% of the time.
This sounds silly, but I noticed the last week that whenever my home button decides to flake out on me switching live wallpapers brings it back to life. The button will then function perfectly for anywhere from a few hours to a few days, flake out again and then be brought back by a live wallpaper switch. No reseting, or changing of settings beyond the LW.
I just wanted to throw this out there, if only because many were guessing this seemingly common problem was a hardare issue and in my experience it's looking to be very much a software issue. Now I just have to figure out what's killing the button in the first place.
paxton, I tried your solution but it doesn't seem to do anything for me. I'm still at a loss.
I called Tmobile but tech service wants me to ship my phone back to them phone at my own cost. They forwarded me back to customer service when I refused. Anyone else having problems dealing with TMO? I'm worried that if I return the phone using buyer's remorse, I'll lose my Bing cash back.
i kinda had the same problem, just all buttons didnt seem so sensetive. So I removed my zag for reasons of it being sticky feeling during games like nova. Now my buttons respond so well. Thats how they should be...
i ONLY have this issue when i have a live wallpaper and also when the lights of the buttons are on, as soon as they time out i can press the home button and it will work

I had the same problem... Removing the screen protector seemed to fix all issues. Oddly enough, it was only my home button that was having poor responsiveness.
