So now that the Streak5 has been EOL'd, what would happen in the event of damage covered under the warranty? I bought my device less than a year ago from Rogers in Canada and so it should still be covered under warranty. Will dell still honour that warranty? Will Rogers still honour it?
Just trying to understand what this means for me specifically.
Dell is very good about repairs/replacements and if they weren't able to repair/replace the Streak 5 under warranty they would offer you something comparable in exchange.

The problem is that there is nothing comparable.
They could offer refurbs when their US stock dries up. They likely still have stock built up for at least a month or two for warrentee reasons.
Keep in mind that EOLing in america doesnt mean the end of the streak. As long as new streaks are still being manufactured for other markets (and is in fact still being launched into NEW markets) they will still do rom updates.
You can still buy new ones off the UK website and from various carriers that carry them regionally.
Most likely though all the carriers that havnt updated 'recently' are rather unlikely to get further updates O2/Rogers/Starhub are likely going to be left behind if/when GB lands.
Softbank/Olleh KT/Retail and possibly HK Retail are the most likely canidates for recieving GB if/when it comes out.
At&t and Cincinnati bell prob wont recieve it, but it's not impossible.
Fact is most of the carriers outside the US are still selling streaks and hence they still have to support them.
It doesnt matter if a specific carrier doesnt get a rom as long as a single one is released. There's plenty of people installing 354 over 351 even though it has no real benefits over 351. Just like many venue owners are forced to upgrade to a Olleh KT rom as that's the only update pkg that was released for the venue.
The streak still has months of support left in it though it's carriers, only thing that means is that it may recieve up to GB but very likely wont recieve ICS.
it was sold Exclusive through Optus in Australia and is no longer on their site (not sure for how long that's been missing) but isn't even mentioned on the Dell.com.au site at all.

Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a Galaxy Note. Unfortunately I'm in the U.S. So I'll have to get it from overseas. Even if I get it from a US seller, the phone is probably imported anyway. I'm planning to get it from Handtec. They have the EU version I believe.
Now if Samsung relases any OTA, does anyone know if I'll be able to get it here in the U.S.
Thanks.
As I understand, the Note doesn't need OTA's per se, as they're also downloadable directly into the phone through your WiFi using a piece of software called Kies, that is instaleld both in your phone and in your desktop.
I don't own one yet tough, so I'm just passing along forum information.
Funny you are asking that on XDA. Who cares? You can always come here and get it. Be much more concerned about the lack of warranty. The only thing holding me back from getting the Note

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Note comes with an international warranty... Well my Note did. I'm in the UK and bought it as an import from Germany. Confirmed the international warranty with the supplier too and it's definitely in force. Got a warranty book in the box to prove it.

the availability of OTA is dependent upon the region the phone originated from, not which country youre currently in.
ie. if you have the european note, it will only update when a european update is available, not when the US update is available. doesnt matter if youre in US or australia like me, cant update until they release a european update.

It doesn't matter where the warranty comes from, but if any Note user decides to:
a) root their device
b) install any custom rom/kernel
the warranty will be gone in most cases. The warranty will cover hardware or software malfunction but if you install not-stock stuff on your phone, then you can't complain if your service provider or repairshop won't do it for free.

Yes, but I believe his question was more about if an american carrier would broadcast a european OTA over their networks. They don't, but Kies take care of that.

I wasn't expecting the update to be broadcast from the carrier actually. I'm expecting Samsung to broadcast it directly. It sounds like I should be able to get the update, either through OTA or through Kies. It'd be nice to be able to update without requiring a desktop though.

carriers only broadcast updates to carrier locked phones iirc.
if you purchase an unlocked phone, it doesnt matter what carrier youre on. when you go to check for updates, it should be connecting to samsung's servers, not your carrier's.
I am considering buying a Galaxy Note but I have a dilemma so I hope you will be able to help me out with it.
If I decide to buy it I will probably have to buy it through a mobile carrier meaning that I will have to unlock it to run it on a different network. I have someone to do it for me so I don't know what kind of software they will use.
Since I am new to Android, I would like to keep away from the rooting as long as possible so I am talking about stock software here.
Therefore, I would like to ask this:
1) Have any of you unlocked their Galaxy Notes? Are there any side-effects or it feels totally SIM-free?
2) Am I going to be cut-off from the official software updates (ICS and so on?) or it will be totally like a SIM-free experience?
3) Are all the splash screens, apps and other carrier-related stuff gone after the unlock?
Thank you in advance!
This doesn't answer your questions, but why would you buy a carrier phone and use it on another network? Why not buy unlocked?

If you plan to get the ATT one, I dont think it will get 3G/+ on Tmo. The intenational one I have definitely does not have that band. Unless there is another unlocked version that has those bands. And my international version does not have LTE as well.
And why would you sign a contract with ATT and want to use it on another n/w? Doesnt make any sense whatsoever.

I live in Europe so I am talking about an international version.
Technically I wouldn't be buying it directly from a carrier, I just wanted to keep the discussion simple. I would buy it from a store but they get it abroad, unlock them and sell them legally. It's the only way I can get it where I live.
Ordering from Expansys or similar sites would mean that I would have to pay import customs which would probably amount to 200-300$ or more.
Where are you from? There are more retailers than expansys
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I live in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Since it is not yet a member of the EU, you have to pay customs fees for this kind of stuff.
I will be going to the UK in a few weeks and thought about buying it there but that would mean that I wouldn't have any warranty. Most sites do not offer warranty outside the UK or EU. Also, even if I found one seller that offers worldwide warranty, I would still have costs shipping the phone to the UK or wherever and back (still EU issues) if needed.
Buying the phone locally should give me a 2-year warranty so that's why I am thinking about that option.
if you get it sim free fromthe uk then you woudl be paying more than you woudl in say germany - sim free in the uk are about £500+
sim free means it isnt locked to a carrioer that doesnt stop anything regarding updates to ics, you wil lstil lget them just might be at alater date than other countries
unlocking is not the same as debranding which would remove the software and logos etc
mine is sim free whcih i bought on a 2 year contract and it is no different to any other note locked on the networks

buying it through a carrier does not mean that the phone is locked to that carrier anyway. have you asked your carrier or the store you want to buy from if they sell the Note locked?. my Note is bought from German Telekom/T-Mobile and has no sim or netlock. i just tested the Note with simcards from other German and foreign carrier and they all work flawlessly. so maybe you can purchase a Note at your side that is also sim/netlocked free.
All Galaxy Notes available locally were on foreign carriers. The guy at the store could only confirm that it works will all SIM cards, not that the particular phone had to be unlocked or not, but it was definitely on a foreign carrier when they got it.
I am not sure if the phones are debranded or not. Is that something that I can do on my own without rooting the phone?
So, you guys can officially confirm that unlocked (and optionally debranded) Galaxy Note will act as if they were SIM-free in regards to official updates, apps and so on? No worries there?
As for getting it abroad, it wouldn't be the best solution since I would have to send it to the UK, Germany, Italy or wherever if something is wrong paying 100-200$ of customs fees every time if something goes wrong.
I'd just like to confirm that it is possible to update the firmware automatically with an unlocked Note. Cheers!

Quite.
Also to keep in mind : in the EU, the carrier must agree to unlock phones after at the most 6 months.
And regarding ICS upgrades for the Note, they're apparently fairly messy at the moment. Locally (France) my carrier and the local Samsung branch are apparently more or less pointing at one another for a botched upgrade (at the end of June, note that it was announced as "we're fixing a few things, should be any day now" in March) where they apparently managed to brick a number of user phones. Samsung tends to communicate fairly poorly on the issue.
Other than the updated stylus apps, I'm not really sure the upgrade is worth it. And I discovered the whole "Kies" crud when I got this phone which really annoyed me since I don't normally run Windows (or Mac OS) and some operators apparently like to push their stuff only through that channel.

There's no reason why you couldn't. Possibly you'd get the Samsung update instead of the one from the original carrier (not guaranteed). But unlocking phones is fairly standard procedure.
Actually I got an update from the previous carrier from which it was unlocked from judging by the bloatware installed with the update.

I still haven't received the March update. The people at the AT&T Corporate store and AT&T customer service didn't even know there was an update that should have been available until I showed them. And then they just scratched their heads and gave the old can response of, "maybe it's being rolled out in stages?" I then asked, "Who can I talk to to find out when I will receive it?" and either they didn't know or they claimed to know...but people were not allowed to talk to them.
So, I'm guessing this update might come out around this time next year from AT&T.
I KNEW I should have bought a T-mobile device and just unlocked to use on AT&T since that's the carrier my family is on.....and yes, i'm still waiting on the March security update. Maybe i'll get that one in June and the April one in Dec. :/

Regardless, the update changed the Baseband Version from APB5 to APC2. The MYAT&T app clearly shows that it should be available. My phone is still on the APB5 baseband and I can not get the update from any method. I have not received an OTA notification, manually checking for it shows me up to date, and Samsung switch tells me no update is available. So an update was released in March but me (and apparently others) can't get it. The only thing I haven't tried in the Samsung Experience at BestBuy.
This is the reason, I am thinking that (at least some people) probably won't see an update from AT&T like the one Tmobile just got for a long time.

AT&T Sim. Everything checks out with the phone and sim. I've talked to AT&T customer service on the phone and brought the phone into a local AT&T corporate retail store and both times they said the phone and account were fine. They also both claimed to not know about any updates until I showed / told them about it. Then, they just scratched their heads and gave me the old, "well...maybe it's just being rolled out in stages?" But neither could tell me who to contact to confirm if that was the case or not. Basically, they are clueless about their own products.

I purchased my S7 at BestBuy about 2 weeks ago and the next day came back to Uruguay(South America). Then I saw online the March 18th update which also updated the baseband.
I tried to update it mannually but as it was mentioned it didn't work because the SIM is not from AT&T.
I have an AT&T SIM card that came with the phone but is not activated, do you think that placing that SIM card in the phone and trying the update will work?
Plane mode also?
I'm starting to get desperate on this phone because when I bought it I didn't know about this AT&T stupid policy about the updates.
Thanks.

I finally reached the 50 day finish line and will have my phone unlocked today or tomorrow. I want to sell this, but as "unlocked" on Swappa to make a bit more on it. How do I remove the Sprint Bloatware after unlock?
The variant you have technically will always be a Sprint variant. If you start up in bootloader mode, it will have variant - sprint not openus
I want to know the answer to this as well. I heard that factory resetting with a non sprint sim would take that stuff away. I am still 10 days out from the unlock.

Well Sprint doesn't say anything about unlocking it internationally. https://www.sprint.com/en/support/solutions/device/faqs-about-unlocking-your-sprint-device.html
Maybe you'll be lucky and it'll work for you, but I wouldn't take a chance taking a Sprint variant over seas with their track record of randomly relocking phones. There was a post here on the forum of a guy from Germany that bought an unlocked Sprint phone and couldn't use it over there. So until you actually try it, you won't know for sure. I still stand by my OP that the seller should disclose that it's a Sprint variant because it's not worth as much. There's plenty of regular unlocked ph1's on Swappa to choose from, so good luck trying to sell it for more than $300, if it's mint.

I just called Sprint again to make sure (spoke to international department) they said there will be no issues it is 100% unlocked. I don't know what happened with that guy from Germany, but I'd guess he was lied to about it being unlocked from whoever he bought it from. In fact unless the post is less than a couple weeks ago, I know that's the case, because I got mine the first week of the offer and just was able to get it unlocked late last week.
I went to Swappa and every mint selling for $340 is still locked to Sprint. In fact, every posting says "locked to Sprint, will be unlockable after 50 days". So I'd assume people are selling the unlocked Sprint variants on "Unlocked" section, because there's no Bloatware, and it is unlocked.

People that got in on the early lease program were told that they wouldn't have to wait the whole 50 days, and many posted their devices were unlocked within a few days of being paid off. One guy even posted his contract, and it didn't say anything about being only DSU until 50 days of use. Obviously, Sprint caught on to this that people were cancelling their contracts as soon as they paid off the device.
My point is, sellers of a Sprint device that are trying to sell it as an unlocked device need to disclose that it's a Sprint variant because most people will gladly pay a little more for a true GSM unlocked device that they don't have to worry about getting randomly relocked. The cheapest PH1 on Swappa in the unlocked section is $389, and none of them say they are Sprint variants, but there are people who will lie and not tell someone it's a Sprint variant, so I just wanted to inform the OP. That's not right.

Look, I know you want to be right, but you just aren't... I ordered my phone day 3 of the deal. My phone was unlocked originally and then relocked a week later, because Sprint initially made a mistake and corrected it. It didn't affect me because I'm on the Sprint BYOD deal anyways. That's more than likely what happened to the German guy...
There is zero difference between the Unlocked and Sprint version. Usually with carrier specifics phones (note again I said usually) they alter the accepted frequencies to support that specific network and add carrier Bloatware, that's not the case with the Essential phone. Once the 50 days is up and you get it unlocked, it's unlocked forever. It's yours and you own it to use how you see fit. There is no Sprint Bloatware whatsoever or any carrier branding. It is now deemed "Unlocked" and can be advertised as such. I'll put in my listing that it was used on Sprint Network, but to say it will randomly relock is a ridiculous statement and has no chance of happening. It will accept all frequencies that any Essential phone is capable of using.

You just completely contradicted yourself. Your phone was relocked "accidentally". LMAO. Ok buddy, you're right, I'm wrong.

There are two sprint system apps installed onto the sprint variant. Once it's unlocked, it is close enough to unlocked to probably sell it as such but there is a slight differences.

I didn't contradict myself... They relocked people because they hadn't had service on the phone for 50 days to fully own the device... I have now. It is unlocked internationally and Domestically. It will accept all carriers in the world without risk of relocking... You're trying to way too hard to be correct.
I have already removed the Sprint PRL manager, by flashing Essentials stock ROM, not that it actually shows unless there's a Sprint Sim in the phone in the first place, but still for others peace of mind. It is now an Unlocked Essential Phone. No difference from my phone to an Essential website or Amazon version...

Sprint can't relock them if there's no Sprint sim in them anymore.
I bought 4 through the deal, only 1 got relocked, that was the one that still had a sprint sim (and that one is unlocked now as well since the 50 days are up).
2 of them I gave to my parents who live in Belgium (that's in Europe) and they've been working perfectly ever since.

Ok I'm glad it worked out for you. Then I guess the right thing to do if selling the phone in the unlocked section on Swappa is to state that the 50 days has passed and it's fully unlocked. I stand corrected.
RE: Thread comment related to domestic and international unlocks on PH-1 Sprint variant.
Both unlocks are applicable on PH-1.
Attached composite of screen captures from my unlocked PH-1's illustrating BOTH domestic AND international unlocks of one of my PH-1's as reference example.
