Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a Galaxy Note. Unfortunately I'm in the U.S. So I'll have to get it from overseas. Even if I get it from a US seller, the phone is probably imported anyway. I'm planning to get it from Handtec. They have the EU version I believe.
Now if Samsung relases any OTA, does anyone know if I'll be able to get it here in the U.S.
Thanks.
As I understand, the Note doesn't need OTA's per se, as they're also downloadable directly into the phone through your WiFi using a piece of software called Kies, that is instaleld both in your phone and in your desktop.
I don't own one yet tough, so I'm just passing along forum information.
Funny you are asking that on XDA. Who cares? You can always come here and get it. Be much more concerned about the lack of warranty. The only thing holding me back from getting the Note

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Note comes with an international warranty... Well my Note did. I'm in the UK and bought it as an import from Germany. Confirmed the international warranty with the supplier too and it's definitely in force. Got a warranty book in the box to prove it.

the availability of OTA is dependent upon the region the phone originated from, not which country youre currently in.
ie. if you have the european note, it will only update when a european update is available, not when the US update is available. doesnt matter if youre in US or australia like me, cant update until they release a european update.

It doesn't matter where the warranty comes from, but if any Note user decides to:
a) root their device
b) install any custom rom/kernel
the warranty will be gone in most cases. The warranty will cover hardware or software malfunction but if you install not-stock stuff on your phone, then you can't complain if your service provider or repairshop won't do it for free.

Yes, but I believe his question was more about if an american carrier would broadcast a european OTA over their networks. They don't, but Kies take care of that.

I wasn't expecting the update to be broadcast from the carrier actually. I'm expecting Samsung to broadcast it directly. It sounds like I should be able to get the update, either through OTA or through Kies. It'd be nice to be able to update without requiring a desktop though.

carriers only broadcast updates to carrier locked phones iirc.
if you purchase an unlocked phone, it doesnt matter what carrier youre on. when you go to check for updates, it should be connecting to samsung's servers, not your carrier's.

Well I guess that it will be for some other country too and if it doesn't I think that the rom will be modded fast here
Wow only Tweeted them last night to say the forums were implying they would not have it out before Christmas while Samsung were releasing it tomorrow. LOL. I like the reply

Does the Galaxy S that T Mobile UK supply come with any of their branding?
I was expecting to see a load of T Mobile crap installed on my SGS but there was nothing.
I'm on T Mobile but I upgraded via a carphone warehouse shop and mine isn't network locked.
Could be it depends on language? English first, then translation and rest of the world?

I thought Craphone Whorehouse always sold generic handsets? If Vodafone hadn't been selling generic unbranded sets when I got my Galaxy S I would have gone round the corner and got one from them instead.
Seems that because of the huge success of the phone worldwide the release will be progressive because the servers might not be able to handle all the phones
Might explain why not all the country releases will be at the same time
That doesn't make sense at all. Multinational companies have their servers in whichever countries they are present. An american customer won't download updates from samsung india or vice versa... So in the end, each country is unique and regardless of when the update releases, users will download it from the same local servers after all, whether it's one country at a time or all of them simultaneously....
I would have thought it's equally (or more) likely that the T-Mobile forum team haven't heard about the delay yet. Given that the definite knowledge of the delay itself only seems to have surfaced in the last couple of days.
Also, without wanting to sound mean about it, the non-answer in that thread, re how to back up data etc, doesn't suggest the highest level of possible competence.
Anyway, we'll know soon enough, I suppose!
Anybody thinking of reverting back, rebranding and getting the AT&T specific updates?? Kicking the idea around myself, Data="ATT-US" was the removed string... Please let is know if anybody goes this route...
I just did. Had to roll back to 7008, didn't have 7004. Hope it still works.
Think of doing the same just wanted to wait for someone to report if there are in fact anything different or was ATT just talking.

Not worth the wait (and sooo glad I did the VPN hack update)
Apparently the ATT exclusive *features* they are adding is a WISPr protocol that switches you to login into att wifi hotspots automatically when near one. To save you (and them) data bandwidth.
The other feature is to allow you to sync your contacts with your att address book. Even lamer.
So yes ATT made you wait this long for nothing.
Lesson learned. Always rely on the fans and community for support, not the ones you have a contract with.

lol same here. 1 starbucks and a few McDonalds...not worth it. plus i've been on ATT for 3 yrs now and still grandpa'd into the unlimited data usage plan...so no worries on data
I did revert to 7008 and re-branded my phone. I am not worried about ATT's feature. I more worried about firmware updates. I know Rodger's Focus had firmware updates.
I did have trouble with it at first. This post solved my problems:

If there are firmware updates of any importance for Samsung Focus phones I see two ways of getting them;
1. anyone who puchased their phones outside AT&T or any carrier(say on Amazon or retail store) I would think they would get the update through Zune or directly from Samsung seeing their phones are not "Branded" which is no different from our "debranded" phones..
2. Reverting back to 7008, use Samsung Registry Tool, rebranding AT&T and then getting NoDo with anything else AT&T is offering..

I'm curious about this comment -- where can you get an unbranded Samsung Focus because I have yet to find one? Do they have the AT&T logo displayed below the earpiece and does it have the AT&T apps/fluff pre-loaded? If so, then that's not an unbranded phone.
Michael.

I doubt it, when MS asked Chris Walsh to pull the updater tool I got the feeling from comments by both MS & Mr. Walsh that both were going to look into a solution to correct the problem, let's face there is no way either MS or the Chevron team will let so many out in the cold on a new start up OS, there was something like 25,000 downloads of the tool..
Will people who got NoDo get this update?

My guess is your phone will be shown as Up To Date, I also imagine you can go into Zune and choose revert back to 7008 then you should be able to reupdate to AT&T's version.. Grant you this is only my opinion.. Going to be a interesting week for those who rebranded or used the Chevron Update Tool, especially with rumors of a upcoming Microsoft Update concerning Certificates..
I unbranded then updated via the VPN method then rebranded back. For some reason Zune isnt giving me the option to revert back so guess I will see what happens when they start rolling out the next updates.
I just connected my phone to Zune and it shows a Samsung update available. I am updating to it now. Looks like it saw I had the NODO then offered the samsung update.
Should this make or break my decision whether to purchase one or not? I'm new to this scene and I'm not too sure what the differences are besides the carrier-installed apps.

Hey. Unbranded vs Branded matters only if you don't want to wait for updates to be released since carriers have custom firmware whereas unbranded handsets will be able to apply new firmware as soon as the manufacturer releases it.
However, since your a member on XDA, this shows you may be interested in custom roms and modifying your phone. The above therefore does not matter because as soon as a new update/firmware is released, XDA have it and we can all (unbranded/branded) install it...
If you know that you won't be modifying your phone and sticking with stock then go for the carrier option as this is usually subsidised and cheaper than the unbranded 'sim-free' option... however updates will take longer than those with unbranded phones...(however as I said above... you don;t have to wait for updates if your part of XDA)
Either way, you could buy the branded version and debrand it by installing an unbranded stock rom and then installing a custom rom/kernel if you like.
If the phone is physically branded (e.g. The phone has a T-Mobile logo printed on it) I would always go for the sim-free / unbranded one in that case because for me it ruins the look of the phone.
Also your point about carrier bundled apps... carriers usually bundle bloatware/crapware with there branded phones... however you can easily uninstall these applications so its no big deal if it saves you money buying a carrier branded handset.
To add something to the above post from jUsT2eXy.
You can always get the branded version cheaper, change the back cover since most Carrier put their logo on the bottom back side and unlock it.
Worth the extra hassle? Can't say since I never done it.

I usually would buy branded phones from the carrier, but I live in the US and the SGN isn't available here yet. Since I'm still new to this, I don't think I'll be doing any kind of software modifications yet.
Someone mentioned that they received an e-plus branded unlocked SGN. I was just a little confused about what that meant.
If I do have an unlocked, let's say, e-plus branded SGN, would I still be able to receive updates even if I'm not running on their network?
Since I'm going to go out of my way to order a SGN from overseas, I might as well get an unbranded one right? The problem is, I already ordered one from Germany and I'm not sure if it's unbranded or not. It should be coming in tomorrow morning. If it is branded, do you think it's worth the hassle to return/sell it back out and order an unbranded one?

I am considering buying a Galaxy Note but I have a dilemma so I hope you will be able to help me out with it.
If I decide to buy it I will probably have to buy it through a mobile carrier meaning that I will have to unlock it to run it on a different network. I have someone to do it for me so I don't know what kind of software they will use.
Since I am new to Android, I would like to keep away from the rooting as long as possible so I am talking about stock software here.
Therefore, I would like to ask this:
1) Have any of you unlocked their Galaxy Notes? Are there any side-effects or it feels totally SIM-free?
2) Am I going to be cut-off from the official software updates (ICS and so on?) or it will be totally like a SIM-free experience?
3) Are all the splash screens, apps and other carrier-related stuff gone after the unlock?
Thank you in advance!
This doesn't answer your questions, but why would you buy a carrier phone and use it on another network? Why not buy unlocked?

If you plan to get the ATT one, I dont think it will get 3G/+ on Tmo. The intenational one I have definitely does not have that band. Unless there is another unlocked version that has those bands. And my international version does not have LTE as well.
And why would you sign a contract with ATT and want to use it on another n/w? Doesnt make any sense whatsoever.

I live in Europe so I am talking about an international version.
Technically I wouldn't be buying it directly from a carrier, I just wanted to keep the discussion simple. I would buy it from a store but they get it abroad, unlock them and sell them legally. It's the only way I can get it where I live.
Ordering from Expansys or similar sites would mean that I would have to pay import customs which would probably amount to 200-300$ or more.
Where are you from? There are more retailers than expansys
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I live in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Since it is not yet a member of the EU, you have to pay customs fees for this kind of stuff.
I will be going to the UK in a few weeks and thought about buying it there but that would mean that I wouldn't have any warranty. Most sites do not offer warranty outside the UK or EU. Also, even if I found one seller that offers worldwide warranty, I would still have costs shipping the phone to the UK or wherever and back (still EU issues) if needed.
Buying the phone locally should give me a 2-year warranty so that's why I am thinking about that option.
if you get it sim free fromthe uk then you woudl be paying more than you woudl in say germany - sim free in the uk are about £500+
sim free means it isnt locked to a carrioer that doesnt stop anything regarding updates to ics, you wil lstil lget them just might be at alater date than other countries
unlocking is not the same as debranding which would remove the software and logos etc
mine is sim free whcih i bought on a 2 year contract and it is no different to any other note locked on the networks

buying it through a carrier does not mean that the phone is locked to that carrier anyway. have you asked your carrier or the store you want to buy from if they sell the Note locked?. my Note is bought from German Telekom/T-Mobile and has no sim or netlock. i just tested the Note with simcards from other German and foreign carrier and they all work flawlessly. so maybe you can purchase a Note at your side that is also sim/netlocked free.
All Galaxy Notes available locally were on foreign carriers. The guy at the store could only confirm that it works will all SIM cards, not that the particular phone had to be unlocked or not, but it was definitely on a foreign carrier when they got it.
I am not sure if the phones are debranded or not. Is that something that I can do on my own without rooting the phone?
So, you guys can officially confirm that unlocked (and optionally debranded) Galaxy Note will act as if they were SIM-free in regards to official updates, apps and so on? No worries there?
As for getting it abroad, it wouldn't be the best solution since I would have to send it to the UK, Germany, Italy or wherever if something is wrong paying 100-200$ of customs fees every time if something goes wrong.
I'd just like to confirm that it is possible to update the firmware automatically with an unlocked Note. Cheers!

Quite.
Also to keep in mind : in the EU, the carrier must agree to unlock phones after at the most 6 months.
And regarding ICS upgrades for the Note, they're apparently fairly messy at the moment. Locally (France) my carrier and the local Samsung branch are apparently more or less pointing at one another for a botched upgrade (at the end of June, note that it was announced as "we're fixing a few things, should be any day now" in March) where they apparently managed to brick a number of user phones. Samsung tends to communicate fairly poorly on the issue.
Other than the updated stylus apps, I'm not really sure the upgrade is worth it. And I discovered the whole "Kies" crud when I got this phone which really annoyed me since I don't normally run Windows (or Mac OS) and some operators apparently like to push their stuff only through that channel.

There's no reason why you couldn't. Possibly you'd get the Samsung update instead of the one from the original carrier (not guaranteed). But unlocking phones is fairly standard procedure.
Actually I got an update from the previous carrier from which it was unlocked from judging by the bloatware installed with the update.

I still haven't received the March update. The people at the AT&T Corporate store and AT&T customer service didn't even know there was an update that should have been available until I showed them. And then they just scratched their heads and gave the old can response of, "maybe it's being rolled out in stages?" I then asked, "Who can I talk to to find out when I will receive it?" and either they didn't know or they claimed to know...but people were not allowed to talk to them.
So, I'm guessing this update might come out around this time next year from AT&T.
I KNEW I should have bought a T-mobile device and just unlocked to use on AT&T since that's the carrier my family is on.....and yes, i'm still waiting on the March security update. Maybe i'll get that one in June and the April one in Dec. :/

Regardless, the update changed the Baseband Version from APB5 to APC2. The MYAT&T app clearly shows that it should be available. My phone is still on the APB5 baseband and I can not get the update from any method. I have not received an OTA notification, manually checking for it shows me up to date, and Samsung switch tells me no update is available. So an update was released in March but me (and apparently others) can't get it. The only thing I haven't tried in the Samsung Experience at BestBuy.
This is the reason, I am thinking that (at least some people) probably won't see an update from AT&T like the one Tmobile just got for a long time.

AT&T Sim. Everything checks out with the phone and sim. I've talked to AT&T customer service on the phone and brought the phone into a local AT&T corporate retail store and both times they said the phone and account were fine. They also both claimed to not know about any updates until I showed / told them about it. Then, they just scratched their heads and gave me the old, "well...maybe it's just being rolled out in stages?" But neither could tell me who to contact to confirm if that was the case or not. Basically, they are clueless about their own products.

Guessing you can't put your phone into airplane mode, connect a VPN in the US, and download it that way?

Nope... when you check for software updates.. the server checks for the sim before it issues the ota.. if we dont have the carrier sim it simply says your phone doesnt have any updates
anyone gone to best buy's samsung experience kiosk yet to check and see if the April update is available there?

I purchased my S7 at BestBuy about 2 weeks ago and the next day came back to Uruguay(South America). Then I saw online the March 18th update which also updated the baseband.
I tried to update it mannually but as it was mentioned it didn't work because the SIM is not from AT&T.
I have an AT&T SIM card that came with the phone but is not activated, do you think that placing that SIM card in the phone and trying the update will work?
Plane mode also?
I'm starting to get desperate on this phone because when I bought it I didn't know about this AT&T stupid policy about the updates.
Thanks.

Im in the same boat as you are.. i dont think we ll get any updates without at&t activated sim to receive the otas..
The only thing we can do is sideload the ota update from people who have already received the update..
But that means people with s7 edge on at&t should share the ota as soon as they download it without updating it... if they update the phone the phone deletes the update..

if you wanna sideload you'll need to unlock the bootloader. as far as I can tell, the galaxy s7 is locked tight!

correct me if i'm wrong, but I always thought ODIN was for flashing full rom images, not updates. At least when I used it was mostly factory default images that Samsung/ATT already released.

Oh!! I thought we could flash it through odin.. my bad!!
Why is the sammobile site not listing at&t version whereas even the tmobile recent firmware is also listed...
AT&T is one of the carriers notorious for not releasing firmware for developers to tinker with.

So not much hope to get the rom to sideload it, AT&T is the worst... I have already published my S7 on internet, hope to be able to sell it quick and get an 'F' version.
Thanks for your help.
I hate waiting for updates...
