[q] update to 2.3 or 3.0 - G2 and Desire Z General

My question is when and if t mobile will roll out the update to either 2.3 or 3.0..i want the stock update..any help?:d

3.0 is not for phones.
2.3 should come in a couple months.
I'm not too sure what you're asking.

Like he said, he wants to know when or if HTC/Tmo will roll out the next update. To which the answer is a fat question mark. There are rumors about Q2 2011 but who knows. Just be thankful you are not using a Samsung device

3.0 is being worked on for phones. At this point the phone version of 3.0 is not even finished with development yet, so we're going to need to wait until that's done to get it. It'll come in a few months, only time will tell exactly when.

Wait what? Last I heard (last week) Google said they will not be releasing the source code - except to official major manufacturers (Samsung and HTC I believe). Part of the agreement between them is that those companies are NOT to put it on a phone unless given specific permission by Google. 3.0 is the windows/iOS version of Android. They did it for a reason, so that manufacturers wouldn't rape such a well designed os by putting their own crap on it, different UI's and launchers, and try to put it on an underpowered device.
Think about it. Some fanboy or average Joe sees 3.0 running on a base model Samsung and prior to that was considering getting an Android phone. Now they won't want to and as such, will inform everyone else (family and friends) about how much of a piece of sh!t is was. That multiplies over and over until you have thousands that think the same thing though never having actually messed with Android themselves. Marketing 050, simple and basic concept. If we see 3.0 on a phone - everyone get it because that will be the device of the year and will stay that way for a long time.

Never probably... HoneyComb is not meant for mobile phones... Google came clean just a few days ago that they are working on a new version which is capable of running on both, mobile and tablet... but not just ready yet... besides, HoneyComb itself is not 100% yet...
May be IceCream will do it...
Wait and watch... Fingers crossed...

Why would you want a stock update?

Some people prefer stock. That's the good thing about Android - there's a flavor for everyone.

Well stock update = root gone tho right? Not saying stock is, say horrid....but it does mean horrid battery life, bloatware, etc. And when I mean stock I mean carrier stock update.

CM7 Nightly is pretty much stock update in my opinion, unless stock means the ones directly come from manufactures, not from google. Opting for stock is a very personal preference and I prefer stock because I am not so much of a fan of manufacture skins on top of vanilla experience. Still... again, it is a personal opinion.

Root gone, but thanks to the large dev community support for HTC devices out there, it is hardly going to be a pain. As and when new version arrives, there will be a lot of devs working on it right away... Am I right Devs???

True. Samsung update timing is horrible.

haha, I honestly don't now, but I've been with T-Mo since my G1, which was around a year and a half ago, then I got the T-Mo G2 and I've always had such a bad time waiting for OTA updates. I'm not so patient. :S But well, it'll most likely be aired soon.

T-Mobile g2 customers don't count on 3.0 if At&t gets T-Mobile... am sure we will get 2.3

Why? There are tons of reasons why I personally would want it.... here's a few:
-Fully gingerbread compatible radio to end all these gps/data problems, and probably bring some battery improovements
-NEWER KERNEL! Am I the only one that would love to be on 2.6.37 or at least 2.6.35? I mean .32 is great and all but I want more!
-newer drivers (i.e. the radio update for the nexus allowed better quality video recording
I have hopes that tmobile will be able to get out an update by summer. Don't quote me on that though.

I am willing to bet if att gets tmo then that will be it for all previous phones. They will look to the future. I am also willing to bet that stock android phones(nexus series) and almost stock like the g2 will be done for. Most of the carriers favor the majority who want pretty animations and screens. They don't care about people who want fast stable phones that do what they need to do and get right to the point. I cannot recall a phone put out by another carrier in the usa that has a stock or almost stock android phone. Tmo is the only one I think of.
That being said I believe everything pretty much from here on out will have some flavor running on top. Makes me sad. Left verizon because tmo stayed true to android for the most part. I fear those days are over. I'm already thinking of an exit strategy and I've only been a customer of tmo for a month.

Stop spreading around the misconception that the G2 runs stock android, it does NOT. Just because it looks stock doesn't mean it is. The TMO/ATT merger will not be finalized until mid next year. Before then the G2 will definately receive at least one major OS update. And what about the OG droid? That was the first phone with stock 2.0. And as long as google keeps making android, there will always be a developer phone.
Edit: Woah! Didn't check the dev section til now! A gingerbread sense wwe ruu was just leaked

Not to knock you but a carrier sent stock update means bloatware, poor battery life. Im running cm7 night 31 and gps works just fine. Remember, devs will rip it apart and fix all the crap the carrier release messed up anyways. Until i cant root a device or get rid of carrier shipped roms ill always rom it up and never take a carrier shipped rom. Im sick of wireless carriers putting their garbage on my phone. If i want it, ill download it.

Lol I guess I should have explained myself better, I meant I wanted everything extracted from it to benefit other builds like CM. I preordered my G2 and had it since sep. 29, and I experienced the whole drama about unlocking the eMMC. I absolutely hate the stock rom lol and I don't have a car so I never really cared about GPS, I've just seen people complaining. My GPS has worked on every nightly I've tried it on, maybe I'm just lucky lol.

GPS seems to work fine for G2's on CM...it has worked for me on everything 6.1+. Its the desire z users that are having most of the issues.

Buying an EVO

I've strongly been considering buying an EVO but a few things concern me:
With the hero it was rather hard to root/get a custom rom going, I really want a stock or rooted version of Froyo on EVO to take advantage of free hotspotting and other features. It seems that there is a push to get a froyo rom going but I have no idea.
The nexus one seems to have a ton of support but less features. I'd rather not get a nexus one but it gets stock everything and the mod support seems to be a bit better.
Any ideas on what to do? Should I be patient and wait for the support for the EVO to come in? Is there a big push to get stock/root/modded version of froyo going on the EVO? What to do xda?
Wait for the Evo. As soon as it's released to the public, there will be a HUGE push for getting it rooted and customized. This is HTC's best phone to date, so there's no way the entire XDA community is just going to ignore it.
thats what I'm thinking. As soon as I watched the I/O conference though I fell in love with Froyo. I wanna avoid the 30 dollar hotspot premium as much as possible and when I saw it was gonna be in Froyo without having to go through a carrier I was ecstatic. I sure hope there's a push for it.
They're already working on rooting the EVO. It is supposed to get an official Froyo update in July, but it will most likely be rooted by then.

I see, well the only problem with the official froyo update is that sprint will most likely take out the built in hotspot capability in place of their own.

[Q] gingerbread?

has anyone heard any more speculation on what phones are gonna get gingerbread?
gingerbread is being skipped and is going to be 2.4 instead of 2.3. Still named gingerbread though. This is what I heard a few weeks back. It makes sense because the Nexus S is full of problems and it's mostly on the software side. Gingerbread is nothing but a themed froyo.
There are a lot less core differences between 2.2 and 2.3 than there were between 2.1 and 2.2. I would think the manufacturers would have an easier time upgrading them and the crapware on it.

Incorrect. There are other phones getting Android 2.3 besides the Nexus S; the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is, for example. Gingerbread has made quite a few changes to the underlying code & add many nice APIs for app developers to it.

True, but, don't know if you noticed that the Nexus One has yet to get an OTA Gingerbread OTA. There's a reason for that. The random rebooting issue could be to blame - but Google for Froyo (such a huge, huge change from 2.1 Eclair) pushed it out to Nexus One users like 2 weeks after announcing it. Huge. Quick.
Gingerbread will probably not come to existing devices. 2.4 (whether it is Ice Cream Sandwich or Gingerbread - who knows/cares) will probably be pushed out first. Don't expect any incremental updates to any existing device yet.
The reason the Xperia Play has 2.3 is because it's out in the AOSP and Sony Ericsson is just choosing to deploy the 2.3 code instead of 2.2. They have the right timeframe and want their device to appeal to the hardcore geeks.
Anyhow, no Gingerbread - especially not for the EVO 4G Shift anytime soon.
I'm hoping for updates to the Shift, i just got it, but i hate knowing there is a newer version somewhere lol
I hate knowing that I got gingerbread working on a 4 year old Windows Mobile phone (HTC Touch/Vogue) and yet it's not officially available for the Evo Shift. I may go AOSP in the future.

AOSP is default open source Android. Every manufacturer puts on their own overlay for HTC it is Sense and Motorola is Moto Blur. When you put an AOSP ROM on your phone it will be default android which is normally more efficient and more bare bones. For instance when you might not have all the functionality that you had with your stock setup. Personally I like how in Sense when I have my Google contacts set up in groups Sense se that and carries those groups over to my phone. When I put the evervolve or CM7 on my phone to test it out I lost that.
I don't know all the things that are different with an AOSP ROM but here are the things I have seen:
Contacts
Messaging app
Home Screen
Now I know there are more programs that are operate in the background that are included (just run titanium backup and look at all the ones that start with HTC) but I don't know what they do for the most part.
Also AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project.
I think I'll wait for a stable sense ROM to try gingerbread. I'm pretty sure I tried a bare bones ROM when I rooted my cliq and didn't like it. Definitely like having everything sync'd like contacts and such. Has anyone come up with something spectacular for a modded or themed stock ROM? Guess I could just go look...
Thanks everyone for the help. Really appreciate it.

There's not one single pure stock AOSP Gingerbread based ROM for the G2. Period. Every single one of them is built off CM7, which has lots of bugs. If you don't believe me about the bugs, check them out on their site here...
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/list
There's currently 305 issues with CM7, which blows my mind. I've always loved the CM ROMs for my MyTouch3G, MyTouch4G, and 6.1.1 for the G2. However, CM7 has too many bugs for me to use as a daily driver. I prefer running either Sense or Froyo ROMs on my phone, but once the official Gingerbread source code is released and used by devs I'll probably hop on that in a second.
I obviously don't want a gingerbread based rom, especially since I asked when the official gingerbread would be released. Thanks though.

The only issues I ever experienced was video playback in portrait mode (which I believe has been fixed now) and the Gmail marginal issue (which is STILL broken). Other than that, it's been good to me. But, because I use Gmail religiously throughout the day, I can't use it as my daily driver.
xboarder56's stock gingerbread rom is pretty awesome. it is very stable and has enough mods that you can really tweak your phone, also it is crazy fast and he updates regularly.
On a side note since it's not really thread worthy, If I'm running stock rooted de-odexed Rom, will I be able to just upgrade to Gingerbread as if I wasn't rooted. I mean would I be able to just upgrade to it with no problems.
Not sure what"s exactly meaning of "Official", from T-mobile ? There are so many GingerBread ROM, i vapourily see a office ROM publish in forum, not quite sure.
For most devices it comes stock or has an update released. If you have a rooted device, and want it, download "ROM Manager" and download "CyanogenMod 7.0.0" and this will not give you 2.3.2. but it will give you 2.3.3! But if you want to get it through, Android Via OTA Upadate, you will need to wait til late June 2011.
If it makes anyone feel better the euro galaxy S has an official release + published kernel source, looks like moto is also rolling out GB for it's X's.
For the newly released devices it comes stock, if you want it, Via OTA Android Update, for the T-Mobile G2 you will need to wait til late June 2011. If your device is rooted and you want Gingerbread you will need to download ROM Mangaer and Flash the CyanogenMod 7.0.0 ROM.

CM7 The Only Hope For Epic 4G?

Reaction to Official GB will Reveal All
I suspect the reaction to the official gingerbread release will tell us. I suspect we'll see a flurry of the standard players after the GB release, Bonsai (my favorite), ACS, etc. However, they will quickly reach the point where they have done all they can do, (i.e. applied all the currently known tweaks/patches).
After that, it's really CM. CM7 development (based on commits) seems to have slowed a bit after a flurrish at the end of May. If the CM7 team is able to get it stable based on the official GB source, the Epic can then ride the CM train for a while. If that doesn't happen, I expect 1-2 revisions of tweeked ROMs based on GB from each team, particularly Bonsai and ACS and then development on the Epic will be done.
More tasty deserts with CM7.

I agree if we are lucky we may get an ice cream sammich. With CM7 we can get timely upgrades of more tasty deserts like jelly beans, kiwi pudding, lemon meringue pie, etc, etc....
Not even looking at icecream sandwitch, if we get to CM7, we will not just get major updates, but we'll get regular, minor releases as well. Those can provide additional featuers. (I'd personally LOVE to get the granular permissions control thats being added to CM7.) If we don't get to CM7, we can dream about ICS, but in reality, we're unlikely to get features and instead only get ROM tweeks (and kernel modules).
Also we will have continued development and not have development stop because of lack of source code. That is what I hate most about not being on cyanogenmod. With the lawsuit with apple Samsung should seriously consider working more with cyanogenmod and just dump touch wiz all together. In my opinion touch wiz is not all that impressive and serious limits the phone's compatibility.

ya im really hopin once 2.3 comes out the CM7 team will get everything on track. i agree with the fact CM7 will more than likely be our last hope after 2.3 comes out, atleast for those who want to stay up to date with an older handset which has great hardware regardless. single core or not, epic has been a dream phone to me, especialy coming from the moment(touch pro 2, touch pro, mogul and ppc 6700 before that. i wont ever go all touch, KB is too important for me). the devs on here are great and keep guys like us loving our phones but i also dont forsee ICS coming to the Epic, even though google made an announcement that android phones will be updated to new software at minimum of 18months AFTER release, although that announcment was made more than 6 months after the epic came out. sucks that this phone hasnt even hit the 1 year mark yet and we are already at EOL even on firmware side. hopefully google puts the pressure on the manufacturers AND service providers for these updates regardless of when they announced that. only time will tell guys but regardless i wont buy a phone without a KB. at this point im so satisfied with my epic i can see myself rockin this bad boy for another 3+ years if need be, does what i want, when i want and has one of the best 5-row KB ive ever used. only thing missin on my EE03 is for impaler to make a keyboard fix for these dropped keys lol i miss my speed demon patch, BIG life saver for me. i type as fast if not at times faster on my epic than i do on a regular PC keyboard =P

Getting Bored with My G2

I've owned my G2 since it's been out, and I have to say that I'm starting to get bored with it. I have it rooted and I've flashed just about every ROM that's been released for it. Sadly, all the recent ROM development is for ICS, and most of those are in alpha/beta stages. I need something new, fresh and is close to 100% bug-free as possible. I've played with most of the Sense based ROMs, MIUI, and CM7 creations, but my primary DD has been CM7.1 Stable.
Just thought I'd share my thoughts here, see if I'm not alone in this, and what others have done to get out of this rut.

My contract won't expire for about a year, and I'll more than likely be leaving TMO as their service is horrible in my new place. That's an issue that really isn't tolerable at all, but my boredom comes from the decline in ROM development for this kick ass phone. Sure, it's an older phone, but it's still a great phone that other phones can't compete with. Also, I tried ICS and I honestly wasn't all that impressed with it. I still enjoyed running Froyo and love Gingerbread, and wish I had the skills/talent to develop updated/enhanced flavors of Sense/AOSP/MIUI based ROMs. There's many to choose out there, but as I said so many of them are in alpha/beta stages with the prevalent "camera not working" bug.
The purpose of this thread was more so to see what ROMs people were using as their DDs, but based on your question I'd be interested to hear what G2 owners have upgraded their phones to as well. I love my G2 and will be sad to part ways with it when that day comes.

I enjoy the keyboard on the DZ but I just feel there is a drop in gingerbread development and ICS is in need of proper drivers. Maybe things will change when the DHD get official update.

Unconfirmed rumors indicate the X may be coming to T-Mobile (in addition to the S), and also coming to Sprint as the "EVO One" of "EVO HD".

The fact that the HTC One S has no micro sd card slot is a def deal breaker for me. I've been using miui as my daily driver. I would love to see a smooth ics miui rom released

Regardless of speed, miuiv4 doesn't have the same feel for me as gingerbread based. It just lacks the user friendly experience.

I've been using gb miui for nearly the time I've had this phone (about 6 months). I've played with the HTC one x and galaxy note and without custom roms I don't think they are any smoother in general interface than what I have (overclock to 1.5 helps). However you are right, I've also tried nearly every rom out there and after a few hours or days running an ics rom I always come back to miui because it's bug free and fast.
Development has slowed lately, probably because they've run out of things to improve, but there are a few ics development teams improving their roms on a weekly basis so in a couple of months I'd hope for a near perfect ics version.
Saying that I'll be getting a galaxy note in a few days because I still want something new and different.

I am also extremely interested in finding out which the roms the community is using as their daily rom. Like OP I have flashed most of the roms and now am just looking for the most stable rom.
ILWT all the way!
I first flashed it in February and have come back to it every time I've flashed another ROM. That's more that can be said of any other ROM I've had.
Supersmooth performance, stable and everything works.
In regards to the phone itself; this is the first phone I've ever had where I'm actually reluctant to get another because I don't want to let it go. I bought my DZ about 14 months ago. I'm not bound to any contract so that is not why I keep it around. I'm guessing it must be true love

I've tried them all, literally, and I keep coming back to CM 7.1.0 Stable with it OC'd at 1200 MHz. I don't believe I've ever experienced an issue, except for the fact that TMO coverage in my area sucks ass.

Rocking ILWT. It's one of the best CM7 ROM's around, and my personal favourite. I also find myself coming back to it. =]
I just flashed ILWT and I'm impressed with it, although it's not very different than CM7. I do like the Aroma installer, very nice touch.
G lite all the way baby
..
I am using Andromadus Audacity b2 as daily driver and it is very smooth after i understood that I should use 4ext superwipe not 3ext...
