Are you talking about Gmail or some other email provider?
If other than Gmail then try setting the SMTP server port to 587 instead of the default of 25.
Joe
Sounds like you need to check the SMTP server. Make sure it's appropriate for the ISP you're using or make sure that your email provider supports remote SMTP.

I'm having the same issue.
I know my wife had a similar issue on her Hero once she'd done the 2.1 update, but after randomly pressing buttons it seemed to work.
I can't get anywhere with it though.
Just to add to the discussion mine seems to work well. Is it possible its a network problem?
Are you using Exchange?
Because what i know, the hotmail Exchange doesnt work in the HTC mail app (bug). You need to have the stock froyo app.

I've had problems getting changes made to mail on my DHD pushed itno my inbox - marking mail as read, deleting them etc. Will switching to the froyo app resolve this?
Could you point me in the direction of where to get the froyo app?
The problem could be caused by port blocking. This commonly happends when using a data connection provided by mobile phone providers. It could also happen when using a wifi connection depending on the actual internet provider for that wifi connection.

I would agree, but at home on my wifi I could do it on my old Touch Pro2 with no problems, but on my DHD it's not having it...
As pointed out previous it is the HTC app at fault. I've just tried it using touchdown and it works fine.

There the setting I have and it still doesnt work.
It worked fine since I got the phone but stopped working the other day
I had the same problem here on the Desire HD (Just released in Japan).
Deleting the Hotmail account from the phone and retyping in my hotmail address and password again seemed to solve the problem. (It was not sending for some reason, but it could receive.)
Try removing the Hotmail account and start again.
The phone otherwise automatically enters the details for Hotmail.
Password Length
Hooray! After hours and hours of searching various web forums, I never found an answer to the question I and several others had on why I could never get the HTC Sense Mail app to log into my Hotmail account ("Authentication Failed". And then, all of the sudden, I had an epiphany: I had strengthened up my Hotmail password before receiving this new phone and wondered if that was the culprit.
My original password was 17 characters long, so I tried using a shorter password (10 characters or less) and SUCCESS!
Although I have an Inspire 4g, the same should be true for a DHD or any other phone running Sense 2.
It appears that the HTC app is not capable of sending a longer password for verification, and likely chops part of it off when sending to Microsoft.
Does anybody know how to add Yahoo email account default email app??? Ive tried manuel way but still no luck.

I'd try using the official Yahoo e-mail application in the Android Market. If you don't want to use that try using your gmail account settings as the outgoing server.
yahoo mail doesnt support pop access unless you have signed up for yahoo plus.
the yahoo mail app in the marketplace works pretty well .
one thing that sucks about the regular mail app is that you can't search emails which is a major omission in my opinion.

I'd rather have everything in one app. I know when i was using Samsung Vibrant it was possible by setting up manuelly

it worked on my iphone as well but I don't think it was pop based..

ive discovered a new backdoor method after a bit of web searching. basically if you change your account settings in yahoo mail settings to say you are yahoo asia (not usa) then pop forwarding becomes configurable even though you don't have a plus account.
worked well for me. it's under account settings, set language, site, time zone.

Loving my new Arc, much more fun than the iphone4
One issue though is using my Apple Mobile Me email account - this account is my main personal email account so I need to access it from the Arc.
Does anyone have the correct Incoming & Outgoing servers setting for this on the Arc..
I can receive emails but cant send? I get a "Connection error" message when trying to send..
I am using these setting under IMAP
Incoming Server
mail.mac.com
Port 994
username: your email
Pass:
Check Use secure connection
Outgoing server
smtp.mac.com
port 25
dont check use secure connection
Tks
I do not if it is always true, it was in the past.
Some operators force you to use their smtp server and not yours.

Are you trying to enter the pop and imap settings? Only use the pop and smtp settings...not the imap.
When my school went to live I set mine up with exchange. I emailed the I.T. people and they told me what I needed

SOLVED???
Hi, did u figure it out yet? I am also looking for the same amswer as well, i a a formrr alumni @ tcc
I have this problem. I have two email accounts, let's say A and B. By default, I have checked the sending account A. Add email account to B, and I need to answer it, but, there is a problem. response will not be sent with an error message that "the server is unavailable" When I'll try setting the outgoing mail server and everything is fine. Google, Google and nothing.
Is this over wifi or mobile data? I ask because my home wifi used to block outgoing smtp servers appart from my broadband supplier.

through WIFI, and through mobile data
I found that if I add any second account and phone refuses to resist and throw email message "server is unavailable".
