With the surge of some ROMs for our devices, and though they're related between each other to a certain degree (save for CM7), the inevitable question surges: which one has the upper hand? The stock ROM is vastly improved since 1.06 and Ganjaman's add-ons make it more mature, the MoDaCo ROM has the advantage of having been the first modded ROM, CyanogenMod7, thanks to Apache14's work, has made a stellar appearance and we actually get the official updates (such as the ones that mad-murdock presented us yesterday), Corvus has been updating his new ROM quite rapidly and it works nicely, like Fuji-Vega does... We're lucky that we're not in want of possible choices! But which is yours?
Thread moved to General.
For me corvus. It's so quick and stable, and is the only one, where's my usb 3g huawei running. Did I told you, that it's really fast?
Sent from my X10i using XDA Premium App
I agree totally, corvus is so quick. I can't wait until it can be combined with mad murdoch's HC tweaks, the vega will be Ninja then!

@logseman
great idea for a thread. I'm considering starting a thread on a similar line, thought id check in and avoid toe treading and see if there is a need for it.
As a newb to vega android modding, its great that there is such a wealth of info and advice, but sometimes its not clear or comprehensive (at least in one place! )
I'd like to run a "what vega setup is best for me" thread. The aim being to allow users to show exactly what setup they are running, how it performs, pro's and cons, bugs etc.
By using a standard template, we can see what works and why. We can make direct comparisons between setups without searching through threads for hours.
Users can then copy setups and try if they think they like it. Might also provide devs useful concise feedback to help them progress roms / kernels etc.
If it already exists, feel free to point me in the right direction whilst mocking my newbe stupidity, but ive read and re read the main threads and can't see it.
If you're reading this and think it would be useful, let me know, with suggestions and i'll get the ball rolling.
I.A.O.
Edit: if you want to help or collaborate, pm me.
I'm not sure how setting up a "standard configuration" would be of benefit. Primarily because of two issues: first, the same custom ROM can have dramatic performance differences between one device and the other (I am a ROM tester for Galaxy S, people claim battery lives of 4 days which I've never heard about); and second, the point of Android is that it actually doesn't force any standardisation as of now: I don't see why users would tend to a certain set up which has been done by another person instead of experimenting themselves.
Don't take me wrong, I appreciate that you take interest in this thread, but I fail to see the point of your suggestion. Android has no predefined "set-ups" as far as I know.
Yeah, i get your point. For me too its all about modding and tweaking. But i also got the impression that some people just want to get there device configured in a way that works for them quickly.
Im certainly Not saying lets all set up the same, if we wanted that we'd just bite the apple right!
I just think it would be useful to see at a glance what is working for people. I.e - "i need a rom with no lag on my vega - ah looks like cm7 ttrc2 has lag issues", without having to read 178 pages to find out.
I guess it would be more like an "at a glance" guide to roms for each device.
I used Modaco since i got my Mobii/Vega, but yesterday i flashed clockwork recovery and started using Titanium backup for real, so now i am testing some ROMs and sofar i like fuji-vega the most, fast and smooth, only some lag in appmenu when i have the device rooted.
I spent a long time using mcr8 eventually with buzz kernel but I then got bored and tried cm7 which I loved but just could not stand all the lag when scrolling etc.
I am now using corvus which seems to work well for me. I hope to switch back to cm7 when it improves a bit.
I love CM7 on my phone and would love it on the Vega, but the wifi troubles it has at this moment on the Vega made me switch to first Modaco and than Corvus. The only bad thing I can say about Corvus is that I personally would prefer Gingerbread green icons aboive the blue ones in Corvus

I am in a similar position to you. I have only installed Modaco R8 and not really used Titanium Backup nor Clockwork Recovery. I find R8 lags after extended use (requiring a reboot) so I am interesting in changing to Corvus. I have a few questions.
What is the best way to move from Modaco to Corvus?
Can I use Clockwork Recovery/Titanium to ease the pain of transition?
How do I install CWR?
Is it best to go back to stock and then install Corvus? If so, will I lose all of my customisations?
Thanks in anticipation of a response.

You would want to wipe when doing an install of a different rom anyway, so you will lose settings, most will be restored by Ti Backup though.
> I would do a Ti Backup of everything, then a nandroid backup before flashing.
Sorry, how do I do that? I have Modaco R8 with Titanium Backup installed. How do I use Ti to "backup everything", what is a "nandroid backup", and how do I restore stuff after installing a new ROM?
Cheers.
you can find this information quite easily by searching
ti backup press menu>batch>backup all user apps and system data
Then after installing cwm (download zip open
cd /path/to/folder
./install.sh for mac and linux (make sure to downlod my fixed scripts second post)
or
click install.bat for windows
then click recovery app use volume buttons and power to select backup and restore)
wipe data instal rom
ti backup from market
menu>batch>restore all user apps and system data (modaco is similar to corvus so should be safe to restore everything if things start crashing repeat install and untick all apps that are already installed in ti backup)
there you go you have transitioned
sorry if this sounds patronising it sounded like you were a noob so i included great detail
p.s. this will all become second nature after a while
hmmm atm i'm using CM7, and after switching to launcher pro it's so fast !!
adw launcher is such a crappy launcher (sry, my opinion)
anyways, my flash is pretty laggy due to the unstable nightly builds, I mean they're not in the fully power.. but I will wait, <3 cyanogem
I wish we had the HC update soon, rly =(
Ive been using Fuji-Vega since april and applying updates when they become available.
Really happy with it and cant complain. Does what i need it to do.
Very quick to use.
Corvus5 for me right now. it's stable and fast as, with oc I have been using cm7 until a few days ago and will no doubt give the latest a shot before the weekends gone, it now has oc kernel
I can't use custom ROMs because nor CM neither Corvus doesn't let my Huawei e150 connect to internet. When I'll solve this problem CM'll my choice.
CM7 for me. I've tried a few but CM7 just feels/looks slicker.
Will there ever be a fully working honeycomb rom?

By the way, anyone having low battery time?

Don t agree just wipe everything and restore user app with Tb. Works fine however i think it s a bad idea do such about system/data.

If you haven't already done that, update your TB, the last version works on ICS.
I've been really enjoying this build. Thanks alot for the whole team!
UI runs very smooth and basicly no log at all.
Almost everything works better compared to the orginal 2.3.3 stock rom I used before.
Few things I noticed, the battery life seems to be somewhat worse.
Also a question about the multitasking in ICS. I cant find a way to open the thumbnails? Long pressing home doesnt seem to work and since theres no software based keys (which I think is a good thing) I'm not sure what to do.
Tab P1000 and I'm using the latest kerned (30.1) with bt fix and rom.

Hi all, this thread is a good idea, it mostly works on the galaxy s 2 cm9 forum but their are still idiots posting in the development area. Codeworx (the developer on s2 cm9 thread) has really bought into it and tells people to post in the discussion thread if they post noob stuff in the dev thread. If the devs here (cdesai, humberOS etc) buy into this discussion thread then maybe more people will use it
Anyways, i tried changing lcd density to 120 to check out more tablet apps on the market but when I do the keyboard zooms and I can only see half of it, so I can't type properly... Any ideas?

I know that I used the honeycomb alpha at 120 and liked it that small. But my question isn't about the best density to have, it's about the keyboard at 120 and if anyone knows how to fix it or has any suggestions.
This is my GalaxyTab. There are many like it but this one is mine.
If, by some kind of freak occurrence I helped you, please hit THANKS!
my keyboard work fine on 120 check the attachment
It would be awsome if there is such way to force apps to start in tablet UI with 160 LCD density coz 120 is very small for 7" displays
CM9 on P1000
Hey guys, I tried to flash the latest ICS build for the P1000, but my tablet wont leave the start up screen...
I downloaded both files, replaced the kernel part of the zip with the one specific for the P1000, wiped cache, davik and reset user settings.
Then I flashed the zip file, but at reboot it won't leave the start up screen.
Any idea on what I may have done wrong?
Thanks!
Hi,
I'm maybe new here, but I've made a big project in a Dutch forum.
I've made 'FerhatMod V2.1'. It is running on Android 4.0.1 and I used the kernel of Wayland. The rest is of me!
Download: ferhatremory.be -> Portfolio -> Ferhatmod -> Download.
Will be later in English etc, is my new site znd will be soon multilanguage.
What I've made extra:
Music player is been restyled;
Launcher, contacts, phone, messaging etc has been fasted.
Video lagging fixed.
New bootanimation, if u want to have the ICS boot, tell me.
All app's (not system app's) can be replaced to SD-card.
Keyboard fixed.
System lag fixed
What I'll add:
Themechooser
Overclock functions
Choosable launchers
Make ur own lockscreen (like Lockbot)
What doesn't work:
Camera, but I'll try to compile the camera of GB
FM-Radio, same
//Clock, fixed
Thanks and sorry for my badly English
ALso thanks squadzone and Wayland

You install it through CMW 4 or 5 and do a factory reset before u install the zip .
Cheers!
Damn, I only wiped dalvik cache :< oh well, still works
Screens soon!
WIFI doesn't work. But the UI works smoother than in the alpha 3 build by Macław and the rest of the crew.
Hopefully you guys join your efforts, and will work together on a great ROM for us
Sry, do you mean that this ROM is based on 4.0.3 ???
Yes, with kernel of Wayland and his sources and updated a lot.
It is 4.0.3 and Wifi works fine for me !
Great rom improvements but what do you mean by 'fasted' :-D

men in your next release please add multilenguaje, i'm speak spanish
greetings and thanks for ur rom
WIFI doesn't work for me at all. Doesn't scan for available networks (I have five in range, which two belong to me).
Speed of this ROM is awesome, multitasking, and switching between apps works as charm.
Me and some other users want ask some question, so here we go
1- Can we add widgets in this ROM ?
2- can we change battery icon to percentage ?
3- Is this ROM stable ? we can use everyday ?
4- You said the lag is fixed, but is 100% fixed ?
5- Bugs, can we tell us what bugs this ROM have ?
6- When you will release a version with all languages ?
I hope i can ask this question here, and if you awnser i´m sure a lot of people will stop ask the same things, and prevent spam

Just picked up a new galaxy tablet 7.0 (8GB) about a week ago. Great device so far and love it. I just can't stand the preloaded bloatware on the device and the space its taking up. It's currently running version 4.0.4
I've read up a bit up on ROMS and rooting the device. Seem pretty comfortable with it just have a few questions.
1) Do I need an SD card in the device in order to root it?
2) Best rom out there? Appears like the most talked about rom is the Cyanogen Mod 10?
No you don't need an SD Card but you may as well get one as you will need it once you start making nandroid back ups. Your tab fill up quickly ! Not to mention media and apps on top of that as well. Bigger the better to be honest.
No such thing as the best ROM, Once you are rooted try them all out and find one that suits your needs. I love AOKP M1( link in my sig) as you can customize it more than CM10 and has better features IMO.
If you dont want to customize it , try a deodexed stock based ROM with all the bloat removed, ROMSWELL makes some cool ROMS. Search the DEV section of this forum.
As i said its a personal choice , so flash them and try them out. Wont cost you anything apart from some time..... If you need help just ask and someone will give you some advice. Don't forget to flash some GApps ( Goggle Applications) as they are not normally included in a ROM due to copyright issues.
Most of all have fun.
Oh id go for a JellyBean based ROM , nothing wrong with ICS , just the latest version out (4.2 is around the corner as well with some cool new stuff )

Thanks for the info! So the 4.0.4 is not jelly bean but its ICS?
How can I not download Jelly bean.. when I try to do an update it says its the most recent one..
I did see that some ROMS allow you to OC the device, so squeezing that extra little juice out of it I wouldn't mind either
Yeah you're trying to update "stock" and its not been released as yet to the general public.....So flash a custom ROM (once you have root)
Once you root , forget about Samsung updates as they wont work any more, But the XDA community devs do that for us much quicker than Samsung does !
Heres a rough guide from Codeworkx (CM10)
First time installing CyanogenMod 10 to your Galaxy Tab 2, or coming from another ROM:
- Make sure you're running a proper working ClockworkMod-Recovery
- Copy GApps and CM10 ZIPs to your internal SDCard ( or the external SD Card )
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash CM10 zip from internal SDCard
- Flash GApps zip from internal SDCard
- DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET
- Reboot

The ROM you are running is Ice Cream Sandwich, comes as a "stock" standard on our tabs, CM10 and AOKP are both JellyBean, Some other customs ROMs are as well. Thanks for your help! Great info there. Are any of these ROMS more complex than the other? I just don't want to get into it too deep or too complex and having more of a issue getting things up and running properly or are these all the same complexity when installed? ie.. customization etc..
Aokp is very similar to CM based ROMs. They are as easy to set up as a stock ROM, only they allow for more tweaks than a factory ROM. The only thing that you have a to do with a custom rom is flash gapps(Google apps) usually in the rom thread. Read, reread, and grow a pair. The fear will turn into a high that draws you in. There is a reason that the term crack-flashing was born. It is very simple to do it on this tablet. If you have any trouble pm me, or post here, and I will walk you through it. I just did it a couple of days ago for my daughters. Good luck

At first try stable roms like AOKP JB milesone 1
As JeramyEggs said , just jump in and get wet ! They are all pretty much the same , I just prefer AOKP as I can customize it a little bit more than the others. I really dont like the way CM10 handles the navigation bar , where as AOKP lets you do as you wish to it. And I like the toggles it uses as well.
Dump stock what ever you do, Dont get me wrong I love the Samsung stock ROMs as they look stunning and the widgets are top class. The music/video players are quality. You will also gain some space on your tab as well. Stock ROMs are around 750MB and custom ROMs are normally under 200MB
Stock has no theme engine as such , that means if you want to change the way it looks ( other than wallpapers) you will have to start decompiling some system .apks ( Applications ) and it gets a tad tricky messing with .xmls.and getting it all working again.
With the theme engine in place you have 100s of themes to choose from ( over 500 in fact) and plenty of mods you can flash as well, You can even edit themes either online or on your PC with some XDA made applciations ( I use "tickle my android" personally to make themes / Edit apks like widgets n stuff )
CM10/AOKP are always being updated ( But AOKP has stopped development for the moment as I mentioned above , until 4,2 is ported) CM10 has a preview build out already. Both ROMs have a ROM control option to pimp your device up as well.
If you look through this thread , you can see most of the main ROMs and what we all do with them.
I tend to flash most of the new ROMs just to try them out. When I'm done messing around with it all I do is boot into recovery and restore my nandroid back up and I'm back to the way I was .Its kinda like system restore on a Windows PC.
Get stuck on anything , just ask as most of the forum members are all pretty cool and more than willing to help out.
My advice is......GO FOR IT !!11!!!1 What you got to lose ?

Get stuck on anything , just ask as most of the forum members are all pretty cool and more than willing to help out.
My advice is......GO FOR IT !!11!!!1 What you got to lose ?

Reading some of this stuff I am overwhelmed. So in order to backup the device up I need to root it first?
I will start with the HOW TO ROOT YOUR TAB thing now and see how far I get..
So I started last night and let's say didn't get very far. Downloaded the neccessary files but for some stupid reason the Kies software (needed to install this to get the drivers installed for the tablet so I can transfer the contents to it) was not installing.
I left my laptop on during the night and it never finished installing the software. I obtained it right from the Samsung Support website.
Any idea what could be causing this?
Also, once I do get this software installed so that the device shows up under Windows Explorer so I can drag the neccessary .zip files to it. Is there a specific location on the device I should place the files on? I do not currently have a SD card in the tablet.
Oh and my device model is a GT-P3113
So I managed to install Kies.. Guess it was getting hung up on .NET framework 4. So I just downloaded and installed myself and then tried the Kies thing and it went right through the install.
So now I should be good to actually see the device in Windows Explorer once I plug it in.
My question still remains, any particular spot on the device I need to place the .zip files for rooting?

Anywhere you can easily find the tar.md5 file on your windows drive, the*cwm-root-gtab2.zip goes to*/mnt/extSdCard which is the root, don't place in a file. I rooted mine via http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25228-how-to-rooting-gt-p3113-step-by-step-updated-07182012/

Okay.. so /mnt/extSdCard is if you have a SD card in the device.
But I do not have a SDcard, that is why i am actually asking does it matter where I place the files within the tablet internal storage due to not having a micro sd card.

All the methods I've seen require an sd card

Hmm.. On my first post in this thread I asked if I needed a SD card to root the device and the reply I got back was "no you dont need one"

Well, do your own research. There is a table of contents in the 7" dev forum, go read the rooting method there and also in the general section. Also, I'm not responsible for what others post and, you can ask the other guy how he rooted his without an sd. I recommend reading about rooting before doing it. I will say this is the easiest device to root.
So I managed to root the device. Was pretty straight forward once I got going. I installed AOKP milestone 1 rom as per someones suggestion here saying it's stable. Overall it does look nicer now and smoother only a couple of questions.
1) I took a backup or the stock stuff before doing anything after performing the root. Now I noticed all the data is gone lol.. Is there anyway to get the data back? Mainly the game progress and all the other stuff?
2) I see AOKP has a theme function under it's settings, currently there is only 1 listed. Where does one obtain themes for it? It's not in the Play Store, is it?
3) Saw the overclocking option also, does that mean the overclock can be pumped up to 1200mhz?
Guess my main question now is whether or not I can get that data back lol..
If you performed a factory reset after flashing your custom ROM, which you should have anyway, I'm sorry to say you have lost your data.

Sure did.. Oh well now I'll know at least and look into the actual backup apps to backup game progress.
The .zip files I put on the table prior to rooting, like fix-recovery, the clockwork mod file as well as the actual ROM, can those be removed off the tablet now?
I played around a bit last night and I found the THEME Choose on the Play Store and I saw themes.

2) you can find aokp/cm theme on playstore, usualy nice theme will cost more
3) yes you can overclock it via ROM control on setting
BRACE YOURSELVES,LONG POST COMING!!
So,this phone is my very first one since 2013,and because i LOVE to tinker every software(even on pc) i decided to tinker my very first smartphone to the best performance possible !
I Learned a lot about this phone and 2 years later i decided to help others reach this point of optimization for this phone..
MY choice for android version for this phone is Jellybean(4.3) and i can explain why.
I choose this version because we want to operate our phone without A-N-Y bugs or FC's...
I choose this version because we want to get the best out of our camera....
i chose this version because I think(please dont sent hate posts) its the lightest software WHILE maintaning stability :fingers-crossed:
Well lets get started then!!
ROM:The best jellybean rom in terms of performance PLUS stability (my personal opinion again) is Just archi'shttp://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...m-justarchis-sammy-stock-deodex-root-t2855613, (IMHO The best developer for this phone ).
this rom use very little resources and it is as close to stock as possible with the basics (in terms of flexibility) baked in :good:
Also we all hate to admit that Sammy stock ROM is the most optimized because their sources is closed (so in sammies 4.4.2 -4.4.4 that developers port is laggy after some long term use so we cant blame them).
KERNEL: I chose this kernel because WHILE having enough stability,it delivers MASSIVE performance boost-And this is Boeffla's in synergy with zanezam's boeffla kernel with uber toolchain http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/kernel-boeffla-kernel-linaro-zzmoove-t2629184 http://boeffla.df-kunde.de/zanezam/linaro/i9300/samsung/jb43/stable/. THUMBS UP TO THESE DEVELOPERS :good: !!!
OPTIMIZATIONS: I'D like to share my boeffla kernel profile.this profile is aimed just a bit to performance while having good Sot's (4 hours+)...
Use Greenify!!! Its the best app available capable of hibernate you apps of CHOICE,freeing RAM to make the device snappy
i'd recomment to use it with XPOSED as you have more options to hibernate even system apps! :good:
ADBLOCK: use Adaway. It saves you from these ads that not only they are irritating, but you save a LOT of cpy cycles, which means cooler phone, still snappy while browsing etc.
Xposed modules:the only frustration about this rom for me is that it has no advanced reboot.. But its obvious because rom is as close to stock as possible). so if you want this you must install APM+ module found in download section inside xposed installer or by this link: http://repo.xposed.info/module/hk.kennethso168.xposed.apmplus.
SOUND:After a lot of scripts and mods about sound in our phone,i decided to settle to [/FONT]V4A app and their drivers because it has INSANE volume boost WHILE maintaining quality :good: .
music application of choice is "Music" by SONY because i find it to work best with V4A. just move the apk to system app to work.normal install dont work!
SYSTEM APPS REMOVAL: I removed those system apps, freeing a good chunk of storage AND RAM, WHILE maintaining stability and no FC'S or bugs or anything.
there is the following:
ChocoEUKor
RoseEUKor
SNS
PanningtryActually.apk
Best face
My Files
Adapt sound(needed to install V4A)
Capability manager service
simcardpermission
CoolEUkor
DirectConnectManager
Direct ShareManager
DroidSerifitalic
Enterprise permissions
Multimedia ui service layer
Page buddy noti svc
Remote controls
Samsung link connectivity
SyncmlDS
daydreams
Live wallpaper support
contacts sync Google
Nfc
Internet(stock browser,replace w ith chrome)
Music FX
vpn dialogs
deep sea
voice record
FWDupgrade
music sto ck app
Cloud agent
bcservice
enterprise sim pinservice
Flashbar service
syscope service
vpn services
factory mode
factory mode
factory test
ims framework
indiservicemanager
MDMApp
OMACP
pickup tutorial
ultracfg
And with all that, i achieved very little Ram consumption and less Cpu cycles :good:
I hope you find this useful!
see attachments for my RAM usage without pressing clear all, and boeffla kernel profile of my own.give it a try!
sorry for long post!
cheers!

Thanks for this, just what I needed, I just got this phone.. upgraded from galaxy s1 =) .. looking for a close to stock experience with some adds, without any bugs, ( on s1 we had "SauROM" ) .. I hope theres something similar for this device. Maybe ill try archis , is there any other alternatives?

Im happy to help!
well, I must say that you should use the rom in the link first to see if you like sammy stock but a bit modded.there are many roms but ported Roms e.g Blekotas roms are indeed beautiful BUT due time eventually it starts to lag, which is not developers fault, its just a port.

I have a issue, When I tried to install the zip, my CWM has no options to do so. All I have done so far is install CF-root. Do I need to install a recovery separately? how and what recovery should I install? Should I get boeffla kernel first?
And is there anything I should be worried about, do I need to update bootloader or anything like that. my current version is: i9300XXUGNA5 , with CF root.
Just flash TWRP not cwm its not compatible

Go to playstore and install supersu, it will say that root binary must be updated.it will ask you to reboot if it is successful. Then go to playstorw again and install twrp manager.and install twrp.it should be quick!

Uber 600 is a toolchain and it should be the best kernel for this phone because its faster than other toolchains, but is just a tad less stable.it worth flashing though!!

Well, you are right, but,i prefer to post the basics because i want to people understand what are they doing instead of blindly doing things. Amplify is a very good app but you should know what you are doing!!
Anyways, thanks for these words and as always im very happy to help for anything!

I keep getting software update notifications, but I have installed a newer firmware (archis) than what I think the phone want to download (the latest version for my region, sweden is older than archis firmware in his thread).
going into settings I do not really see a option to disable to search for these updates.
Do you also get this?
You need to edit this post, you should not be advertising warez ...
The developer of the app in question is also a member of these forums and I wouldn't like him seeing other members pointing to his software being cracked...

Do you really think 4.3 makes impact on Camera quality???
Thanks to the OP and some comments here! Maybe black themes like this could help with the battery life as well http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/themes-apps/vrtheme-allbacksblack-s3-3-hologrey-t2341829
