Question regarding the early 2.1 update and the official 2.1

Was wondering..
I seen once you update to the early 2.1 update floating around there's no going back to 1.5, which is fine.. I've done the update and have no problems.
However, if they were to tweak more and make the 2.1 update better by the time the official one releases, will our phones still receive the update? Or will it register as already having 2.1 and not pick up on it?
First off please search the Forum and the entire internet before asking questions. I am not trying to be a jerk it is just that if everyone started a new thread for a question this place would be horrible.
Second of all if you have a question related to something you already see a thread started about feel free to drop in and post the question after you have used the search function. Again not trying to be a jerk but about half of the 70+ pages in the 2.1 Leak thread are repetitive questions.
So use the search function and if you still don't find the answer ask it in the 2.1 Leak thread.
Thank you and good luck on the search!

Well, for one, I'm okay answering questions again. IF HTC releases another 2.1 ROM, we can update if we recieve the PB00IMG.ZIP. From what I"ve heard, most of the 2.1 upates won't be OTA, they'll be a process you have to do with a rom update utility from your computer. So we'll recieve that PB00IMG.zip and be able to update just like we did here.
If they release an OTA, they'll have to put two out. One for the 1.5 users, and one for the hacked 2.1. OTA's are designed to update from a certain version to the next, they contain files that are overwritten, not a complete new firmware. That is why the last two OTA updates were 11mb, and the leaked rom was 103MB.
Simply put. If we get an RUU (Rom Update Utility), we will be able to update. If not, I'll give verizon a call and tell them the update failed, I contacted HTC, and they told me to get the Rom Update Utility from them. If we get it, we'll have the newest update
Enjoy!

Stuck on 2.2.1 How to root/downgrade to 2.1???

Is there any way to downgrade to 2.1 so i can root?
Obviously 2.2.1 can't be rooted at the moment.
Any way to turn the s-lock to off?
PLeeaaaaaseee helppp!
NO! Sorry but please search before starting a new thread, there's at least 3 others on the first page asking the same question! 2.2 cannot be rooted due to a new version of HBOOT. It is possible to downgrade but you can't root it it still has the new HBOOT. I know unrevoked have been working on it for some time (early Jan). I've heard they've bricked a few phones too so I wouldn't do anything silly. There is no ETA for it so just wait patiently like (most of) the rest of the people stuck on 2.2.
Rant over!

Come on mate, read up, there are numerous posts and questions about this.
The HD2 uses a special bootloader and rom, you will not be able to use any OTA updates.
Wait unil one of the chefs cooks it in.
Reading and searching is very hard these days

Why was this posted on the development, as well as in the Q&A and general section?

[Q] Risks of Putting an Android Rom on my Winmo?

Hi! I had a few questions/concerns, whatever.
I looked through, about.. 19 pages of the General Discussion of "HD2 Android Q&A and General." and I can't find a thread about the risks of loading an Android Rom, onto my windows mobile device. (Also, this is coming from a person who has no idea what he's talking about. )
I have an HTC HD2 Windows Mobile Device.
I dislike windows, compared to my old android device. And I was wondering, are there any risks to running a "Android Rom" onto my phone? I've head it can "brick" it. Which from what I understand, sucks. So, can anyone confirm that? Or tell me, all/any risks to it? And also, if I did do this, could I play my angry birds? :3
It can brick if you are too hasty and don't follow directions. Otherwise, I feel confident that the tools developed on this forum will make unlocking your phone and installing Android a painless experience.
I think the only risk of flashing Android over wm is that you get Android addicted
Installing HSPL and magdlr or clk should be save, never heard, that someone bricked his device by installing these.
The only way to brick your device is flashing a wrong radio rom, or stop the flash progress of a radio rom.
1. An android HD2 is more likely to be stolen.
2. You are more likely to be losing some more friends, once you get playing the wonderful games in android.

LOL : I'm not sure thiefs are checking the OS when they're about to commit their offense.
"Oh wait, that's a custom WinMo 6.5 ROM ? Sorry, here's your phone back !"
you can use an Android SD version, so you can keep your winmo.
The [SD] RAFDROID HD 4.2 bellow has a nice installation instructions. Just follow it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970731
So, wait, are there ANY risks then?
No, there are no risks if you follow instructions, and even fewer risks if you use an SD Android build. That way you are guaranteed to have a working phone if anything goes wrong with Android.

I'm not too savvy when it comes to this stuff, but I helped a friend who isn't savvy at all with this stuff root his HD2 in IM. That's how reliable and easy it is. The absolute only true concern is the power going out to your PC while flashing your HD2. If you have a reliable power source...maybe a battery backup or just using a fully charged laptop...there is really no worry for anyone who can follow the simple directions.

Hi,
The main risk is flashing the wrong radio or interupting a radio flash(power loss, screen saver, antivirus updating or autoscan etc.)
So make sure nothing will interupt it and you will be fine.
Best radio for Android Nand is
HERE
Also make sure you have a fully charged battery before starting.
As others have said, just use a SD build. I too was too paranoid to do the NAND, so I started installing SD build. So easy and so risks. You will love it!
Another SD build to try is the AmericanAndroid version of Gingerbread / Cyanogenmod 7.1:

I cant see where this paranoia comes from, Flashing MAGLDR to your phone its exactly the same type of file and process as flashing a official or custom Winmo rom.
The only thing you need to worry about is if you have a US HD2 and flash the wrong radio to your device.
If you don't use Winmo there just isnt any need to have it on your nand any more. Also using Android on NAND can solve alot of problems over booting via SD.
Stop been a ***** and just flash magldr and a nand rom, Its even easier process for n00bs now there is a HD2 AIO Tool.
Right, so I have no idea what a rom/flash/radio is. I'm soo lost in all of this. >_>
And then, I can't figure out what to do. Like, I found this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136644
I've downloaded the files, but there are no directions? Im so lost on what to do. And I also had a question for him, but I can't post on his thread because I don't have more than 10 posts. Can someone find a simplier way of putting it on my phone? Or atleast help me out with his? Thanks.

Answer regarding Desire Z and Updates

[[ MAIL ANSWER 1 on Updates in Q2 for the Desire Z ]]
Dear Espen Haugen,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Desire Z.
The 2.3 Gingerbread is scheduled to come to your device some time this week. 2.3 will be an FOTA update, so it will come straight from HTC however if it is a network branded phone, they might delay the update to check if it is alright, and then roll it out.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements, should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.

[[ MAIL ANSWER 2 on Unlocked Boot on the Desire Z. ]]
Dear Espen Haugen,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, we’re pleased to announce that we have heard everyone’s comments and constructive suggestions and have decided to go forward with this initiative. We are currently developing new bootloader unlocked software for android phones. HTC is still committed to allowing our customers to unlock the bootloaders if they wish, however we are still implementing the policy and many updates were already finalized prior to our change in policy.
We currently don’t have information regarding which phones will be unlocked unfortunately.
At the moment we dont have a schedule yet either, but stay tuned; we will let you know via our official website and official social media outlets.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but be assured that we are working on a solution for our customers and our commitment has not changed. Please stay tuned to our official channels for ongoing updates on how we will be implementing this policy. Thank you for your patience.

Sorry for funky first post.. Android App posting gone bad!
Anyone could write this man. If you really want us to believe this is true, then do a computer snapshot of the email/ conversation and post it. Make sure that its the original and not a word document, one officially signed by tmobile with employee ID and name in the email. Sorry but we see a lot of these so called valid responses that end up being complete bs.

Using the ticket number 11NOCW27ENA000182 and email : bazerave (at) online.no
I contacted HTC support because the end of june is near.. and no update has shows at least on my device, being in norway. And always one or two steps behind everyone because of
our forever slow Telenor Mobil always slowing down the Update's progress..
And it was NOT from Tmobile... it was from the HTC support department...
I can confirm that the replies from HTC are real. Just logged in with the ticket number and email by firsty.. Hope they don't delay too much for South African unbranded Desire Zs
Really hope that they dont dissapoint us with this. And a much needed rootable phone... what a whack idea to lock us out like this.

This is a very noobish question but hopefully people will actually answer it anyways.. what exactly does an unlocked boot loader mean? Does it mean your phone is essentially always rooted ? So like I could overclock with any of those apps on the market?
Well, it means that it can be rooted using rooting tools. It will not be unlocked out-of-the-box. But capable of recieving Perm root.
The new update locked this feature, and the new bootloader made it impossible to use easy tools to root.
So would this then mean I'd skip the downgrade step? Would I be able to easily temp root? I've always wanted to try but with all the downgrading and code working I'm way too nervous
Yes, when the new bootloader is implemented on the devices it will be possible to use tools that does not require downgrade. As my Desire Z was rooted with Visionary before the .405 update, it SHOULD be possible to use Visionary ( maybe a new updated one for the new 2.3 ) to Temp and Perm root the phone once again.
There might be other tools available when the new bootloader gets on the devices. But there are not much info regarding when and how it will become available.. got no real answer except what i posted here from HTC.. rather cruel to us nerds But it's well worth the wait, i hope
Thanks much for the info! Guess I'll wait until it comes out and see what I can do with it cause I'd really like to give it a shot
Yeah, after my big update-fail loosing root, i have also waited.. even though they say that custom roms are better, i kinda like when my second HTC phone works.. so i take no "big" chances on bricking it So i'll wait too for the update, and see what happes.. i guess i'll brick it then
I know this may sound as bs and if so I'm sry but I just wanna know does this reply from htc relate to the desire Z's in the US only or worldwide?Hopefully with this out I'll be able to finally root my phone

you know... you can root your phone and get a rom that has gingerbread on it for the past month or so right? if not, check the android development subforum. there's a good amount to choose from and they're all good in their own rights.

No I don't know.I just tried to root it yesterday(for the first time actually) with visionary+ but thankfully I couldn't get it to temproot so I never got to the step to try and permroot it.What's the other method and is it anywhere near as simple as visionary?
When i rooted the first time i used Visionary too. But if you got a model with the new firmware, you cant root it because of the new bootloader.. With older models you could root, and install Ginger with no problem at all. Thats why they decided to go forward with removing the Root-locking bootloader..
And it seems like the answer i got was pretty basic, so to me it sounded like it was for Desire Z in general.. but Provider locked phones will of course be slower than unlocked phones that get the firmware directly from HTC and not the provider-haxed firmware.

Check the android dev subforum. or the wiki. there's a full guide on using visionary to only do temp root then gfree to do the perm root. From there, you can pick your choice of gingerbread roms. I'm using virtuous Unity 1.26. others have their preference, but check it out.

So basically from what I've read over there the only option for me is to downgrade to an earlier version, then temproot with visionary and permroot with gfree right?I was hoping I'd be able to install the coredroid rom but that'll be the easy part once I actually manage to root the phone.I mean if the update's gonna come in a matter of days why should I bother downgrading.Btw thanks for your replies guys
Yes, i believe it is because they havent really figured out how to root the newer version. As of waiting a few days for official gb, i have no idea since they promised to deliver during Q2 and since Q3 has just started, i dont know how long it will take for them to actually fulfill their promise.
But in the mean time, unity is a pretty good inbetweener.
You still have to root your phone if u want coredroid anyways, so no harm in doing it now and getting your pick of GB roms.
Sent from my Desire Z via XDA App
Well I wouldn't mind rooting it since I was trying to do it anyways but reading trough the threads and wiki for downgrading the dz all that adb fastboot and goldcard stuff seems way too complicated for me so I guess I'll wait for the official update and see if an easier method like the visionary one or whatever pops up
woah.. those are all different methods, you dont have to use all of them.
as I said:
Temp root via visionary
Perm root via Gfree
done.
no gold card and all that stuff.
