Rooted DI18--->EC05 possible by update.zip? - Epic 4G General

Although my stock Eclair phone is rooted, to the best of my knowledge no stock apps have been removed. Has it pretty much been determined that anyone rooted can't use the recovery update.zip or could it work? And if this method fails does it freeze phones and make the previous Eclair install unusable?

The update will fail. You should be able to simply use the one click unroot, update and then reroot as your ROM isn't modified.

Mine wirked fine, the only problem I has was with the missing asphalt demo so I redownloaded it here on xda then did the update.zip on my phone...rooted di18 to ec05 with no problem now.

I completely forgot that I actually used this tool to root and that it included that capability! Thanks for reminding me.
My question remains though about a failed update--does it still leave the phone usable?
I'd rather not resort to Odin if I can as I've read way too many horror stories about "unbrickable" Epics becoming exactly that.

I've had problems updating from DG17 to EC05. I managed to update to DI18 thru update.zip, and it picked up the OTA EC05 but it fails at updating modem. I looked at several forums and what I gather is that even though the system is at DI18 the baseband still sits at DG17 and I need to update that w/o using odin...if possible

Just in case it wasn't clear to any n00bs like me, you can update I think if only the following 3 conditions are right:
1 - you unroot
2 - all your stock apps are still there
3 - you have a stock DI18 Eclair or EB13 kernel.
I met all 3 conditions by using the tools around (had to fix 1 and 3, not 2) and update.zip worked from DI18, so I'm now happily running Froyo EC05. Thanks everyone for the help.

Holy Hell this update is fast

Well, I had to jump through some hoops to upgrade, but I finally got the 2.2 OTA and it is FAST.
It's even faster than the leaked version I previously had on there.
The hoops:
I was on a rooted 2.2 leak so I had to flash back to 2.1, only the Windows flash utility failed at 97%.
Then I reset, cleared the cache and re-flashed (but this time in Linux) and it worked fine.
I booted into stock 2.1, re-activated my phone and then looked for the OTA.
It was there so I downloaded and installed.
I just finished reinstalling my apps and everything's good to go.

overall speed-wise? i'm thinking to update mine. I'm on 2.1 stock with root. I'd be bummed to lose root since real HDMI is a godsend. do i have to unroot first?
i wouldnt upgrade if youre rooted. i tried and got stuck at the m logo and bootloader is changed so you wont be able to flash back the 2.1 so id either make sure you dont have any rooted apps and youre unrooted or stay with 2.1
Gotta say, with 2.2+LauncherPro I don't even miss root or custom ROM's.

Same here, this is my setup too and it's awesome.
If you're rooted or on a 2.2 leak, I would definitely go through the processes of reverting to stock 2.1u1 (via SBF - http://rootzwiki.com/index.php/Smartphones/Motorola/Droid-X/Droid-X.html) before attempting the OTA update.
I hoped to see the OTA this morning but it wasn't there. So I checked for updates & there it was. It loaded fast & with no issues. I had factory 2.1 without root. I love it so far.

That's partly due to you clearing off your phone. I sbf'd back to 2.1u1 last night and reapplied the leaked 2.2, root, 2.3.15, tranquility, then serenity, and HOLY SMOKES this is faster than it was before I did this. Like, WICKED fast! And yeah, that's without the bloatware-filled OTA. Got the same system as you do too: 2.3.15, just leaked and deodexed
Except your missing the new radio and kernal Also im running the legit 2.2OTA, and have rooted it via the droid2 method..now just have to manually deodex it and ill be all set

Just a heads up, I was running full stock 2.1, however I was rooted, and I did the OTA update with 0 problems. I lost root, but used the Droid 2.2 method and got it back. No issues whatsoever.

All im saying, is why bother with incomplete leaks? Why not take the little effort and do the real OTA?? I SBF'd back to 2.1.. Then did the OTA 2.2 Update, and then did the automatic 1 click Droid2 Root method.. and had a rooted, legitimate 2.2 update in less then 30 minutes after the initial SBF back down
What your doing is like buying a car with no doors on it.. Why run just the leaked system folder, when you can just get the total package that comes with an updated Radio and Kernal along with it? Why have an incomplete update with some components missing, when its not even that big of a deal to get the actual, 2.2 total package and have it rooted in 5 minutes anyway

I think you over-estimate the value of the kernel (which is actually the same version - just a different build-string) and the radio (which is a very small incremental bump in version).
The downsides to the upgrade (for hackers/themers) is that there is no sbf for 2.2 right now and it's been reported that once you OTA, you can not flash back to 2.1 via sbf or you'll brick.
If you're a 'stock' kinda guy, then OTA is probably the way to go. Those that like tinkering a little deeper, need the safety net of an SBF.
I agree. I personally think it would not be smart to OTA at this time if you have the desire to run anything other than stock on your phone (whether you can get root or not). I hear the new OTA doesn't run wireless tether for root users (not sure about this).
I'm still running the original 2.2 leak rooted. After all the problems I've been hearing about with tranquility, I would like to wait until I hear less complaints. Although from what I've read, most of the problems come from user error and people not following the instructions so I'm definitely not knocking P3Droid or Team Black Hat.
We have a system sbf file now for 2.2, that's all youll ever need unless you try something crazy, I have the OTA, rooted and also manually deodexed it myself and running my old theme I liked before.. Adfree is also working fine on my OTA unlike some others... What im saying is im not missing anything over the leak, If anything I have more. The 2.3.15 deodexed leak gives me nothing I don't already have because I was able to deodex and root the official myself.

Very strange, I haven't had a single problem with anything, and I've used everything you listed...,im even pulling 1490 in quadrants
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
And I was pulling similar quadrant scores from the leaks which have the SAME STUFF as the OTA. All they did was increase the version number for the radios and kernel. Even the sbf TBH released isn't the full complete sbf I'd like to have for a safety net (though I trust them when they do say that it is good for everything except folks trying to get out of brick b/c they sbf'd to 2.1u1).
Besides, getting to OTA may be quick, but getting back to where my phone is NOW but with the OTA kernel would take HOURS. No thanks. Not till it is optimized and deodexed and cleaned up by TBH.
Running the OTA, and wile everything works, I'm not seeking an overall speed increase. Some individual things are definitely faster: the browser, gmail, lock screen. But, others are the same, and some, occasionally laggy (may be that's due to my apps? ADWlauncher?).
It's not that the system is slow, just that I don't see any overall boost (certainly not the JIT impact written about in the Froyo coverage).
Compared to 2.1, those things are much snappier. Also, clearing the cache helps with this too.

[Q] Will I have to unroot my phone to upgrade to 2.2?

Dumb question, but I rooted my Epic 4G 2.1-update1. Will I have to unroot my phone before I update to the official 2.2 patch?
Thanks!
Nope but you'll have to re root again once done as the update will break root.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Is there an easy one click root for 2.2 yet like there was for 2.1? I have to use Roamcontrol in order to force the phone to roam due to horrible reception in my house. Otherwise, the phone just LOVES to hang on to the weakest Sprint signal and drain my battery. That's the only real reason why I rooted my phone.
The one click root methods still works for 2.2
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
So if I have rooted using OneClick method, do I upgrade as a rooted phone? or try as non-rooted, or even better, use same method to unroot back to Eclair, then upgrade and reroot?
There are already several different methods, a little confused on which one to select.
Bascially I rooted to get wireless tether for kids' entertainment for upcoming Christmas trip. As much as I would like Froyo, need wireless tether and don't want to ugrade and lose this.
Use the Acs method u will not lose root...
Bobby O's Evo..
I had a rooted stock 2.1 and I used update.zip file without wiping anything first to upgrade to 2.2. Is that ok? Or should I have wiped first? Everything seems to be working ok except for gps (old problem) and screen orientation being laggy (new proble).
And the other question now that i'm on 2.2 without wiping, do I gain anything by wiping the phone? Then I will have 'stock' DK28 and I can reinstall my titanium pro to get everything back? Would that be accurate?

I did the upgrade twice due to GPS being dead... first time over my old 2.1 with all my apps, settings, etc. 2.2 was somewhat laggy and unsatisfying.
Then I reflashed down to 2.1 to cure the GPS issue and that wiped everything. Then I did the update again to 2.2 and now it's lightning quick. I don't know if it's related or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if I just had a lot of cruft built up and that the lagginess was not really 2.2's fault, but my own stuff's.

Would i lose root after 2.2 froyo ota update?

Would i lose root after 2.2 froyo ota update on 21st? If so, how do i get back to root? Sorry for newb question.
First u probably won't get the ota cuz u are rooted ......u need to odin back to di18 stock for u to get the update... or wait a lil longer to have one of ur devs. Cook some rom ready for our root phones... personally I won't go back to di18 ... but if our devs told us (which I don't think we need to) to do it.. then ill be happy to do it...
And to get root back from 2.2 do the same method u did fro 2.1
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Is the OP on 2.2? I'm still on DI18, and it has been fine for me. I rooted, but that's it. Would I still get the OTA?
It was my understanding that you could get the OTA update while rooted, as long as it wasn't a custom ROM. Someone chime in?
Way to NOT search people, I mean seriously....
But anyway like the last half a dozen threads asking THIS EXACT SAME QUESTION, you cannot OTA unless you are on a stock rom with the stock recovery, if you don't want to revert then wait less than a day and it will be in flashable .zip form.
You should be able to get the OTA if you're rooted on di18 and still have stock recovery. The update will most likely break your root, though. All you will have to do to get root back is run the one-click.
Yes

Ya, as other users have said, 2.2 is stock so it should ova update but remove your root (was in thesame situation with my mytouch and 2.2). Of course just superoneclick after you update and you're good to go
Thanks for the question and REAL ANSWERS

The Froyo OTA and you what you need to know..

OK I will put this out there for everyone so we don't have a million threads going on this subject.
1 If your on DI18 stock and rooted with a simple root method you will get the OTA, you will lose root. Also having CWM installed will not break the OTA but you will lose CWM due to the stock recovery being flashed.
2 If your on a DI18 rom that you have flashed with CWM you will get the OTA but it will fail due to the rom not being stock the OTA zip will check for this and if your not on the stock rom the OTA will fail to install.
3 If you have a stock rom with any bloatware removed the OTA will also fail to install the OTA zip file will check your system to make sure its stock.
4 If you running a leaked Froyo build like DK28 or DK17 or any rom made from those leaks you will probably not get the OTA notification at all you will have to reflash back to stock DI18 to get the OTA.
The best thing to do if your running a rom is to wait on someone to make a flashable zip to convert from DI18 to EB13 or a zip to flash from a DK28 rom to EB13 it might take a day or two to get it converted but it will happen after all this time waiting for it another day or two shouldn't kill anyone.
I have stock DI18, rooted, and do have CWM installed (but never ever flashed any ROMs at all), will I be able to OTA? Sorry I'm still new at this.
Good idea to post this. I doubt it will prevent the morons from creating new threads though, there are already 3 or 4 scattered about on this board. Should probably throw something in there about being able to d/l it over Wifi as I've seen that one asked a lot recently, too.

So my question is, I have stock DI18 (Odined back from dk28 last night) and rooted using oneclick root with CWM 2.5.whatever(not CWM3). I have read that if you are rooted and want to receive the OTA update you must not have deleted any stock applications. Oneclick root deleted the stupid asphalt 5 game demo and I am wondering if this is considered a stock app that may affect the result of downloading the update.

Seems to be a conflict of criteria...is asphalt demo not considered a "stock" app? If it is, then by the OPs criteria even havin root would break the OTA since one-click removes asphalt...

I'm gonna say this one more time. SOME of us just want to have the littlest, simple satisfaction of receiving the cool little feature of an Over-The-Air upgrade. Because really, how many times does it happen? Its like I want to go outside when there's a comet passing by. Yes, I could just pop in a DVD about comets with nice high-def imagery and commentary by Morgan Freeman, but I didn't actlly DO it.
So do not deny nor judge this opportunity for us. If you cant , then don't post here. The thread isn't titled "why the hell would you retards do an ota just wait for some warezzzzzzzzz! Lolzzzzzzzz!" So contribute if you can, otherwise don't.
Plus....SOME of us have been on a 2006 winmo powered brick for the past 5 years and we got to miss out on this fancy little thing called a firmware upgrade...over the air! OVER THE AIR!

What should someone do to prepare for the OTA
Well as someone said above, not every one has gone through a OTA update (I came to the EPIC from a true PALM when the software was really worth something) and some guidance may keep us from having major problems.
The only thing I could think of was to backup my EPIC. I used MyBackup Pro and backup to both my card and online. Anything else I should do????

I am stock and rooted with one click. I am not running any custom roms. Will there be a stock/rooted release that I can dl from this site or am I going to need to odin back to complete stock and take the OTA update. The majority of what I have been reading is to let your rom maker create a new one. Since I don't want a custom Rom yet, will I be able to get the stock/rooted update.

It is my understanding that if you run the complete odin package it will overwrite even voodoo.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
i have killed my phone 3 times not disabling voodoo correctly when flashing roms. and each and every time adrynalyne's full di01 restore package has overwritten the whole thing for the win.
so if you are going back to bone stock, unrooted, full bloated eclair, (ie because you need to bring the phone back to verizon for warranty work) then that is your best bet. it will indeed wipe any and all voodoo whatnot from your phone.
Isn't it fine just to bring it back to stock DL09 Eclair, since that's the latest official OTA release? I don't see why you need to go back all the way to DI01 if you're planning on returning it. But I guess in the end of the day it won't really matter either way.
It doesn't really matter, all of the all in one vzw fascinate odins will work.
You technically don't _need_ to odin anything but the modem though.
For me, there was no lagfix and I had a working cwr/rom manager, so I did it in three quick steps.
1. Nandroid restore my DL09 setup.
2. Odin DL09 modem over EB01.
3. install a DL09 kernel from clockwork recovery and wipe the cache.
I was exactly where I was before with no headache.
Nandroid doesn't flash modem nor kernel.
However the all in ones may be faster if you are building from scratch (and absolutely the fastest route to stock). You should pick an all in one with the modem and kernel you want or you will have to do steps 2 & 3 either way.
