The Froyo OTA and you what you need to know.. - Epic 4G General

OK I will put this out there for everyone so we don't have a million threads going on this subject.
1 If your on DI18 stock and rooted with a simple root method you will get the OTA, you will lose root. Also having CWM installed will not break the OTA but you will lose CWM due to the stock recovery being flashed.
2 If your on a DI18 rom that you have flashed with CWM you will get the OTA but it will fail due to the rom not being stock the OTA zip will check for this and if your not on the stock rom the OTA will fail to install.
3 If you have a stock rom with any bloatware removed the OTA will also fail to install the OTA zip file will check your system to make sure its stock.
4 If you running a leaked Froyo build like DK28 or DK17 or any rom made from those leaks you will probably not get the OTA notification at all you will have to reflash back to stock DI18 to get the OTA.
The best thing to do if your running a rom is to wait on someone to make a flashable zip to convert from DI18 to EB13 or a zip to flash from a DK28 rom to EB13 it might take a day or two to get it converted but it will happen after all this time waiting for it another day or two shouldn't kill anyone.

I have stock DI18, rooted, and do have CWM installed (but never ever flashed any ROMs at all), will I be able to OTA? Sorry I'm still new at this.

Good idea to post this. I doubt it will prevent the morons from creating new threads though, there are already 3 or 4 scattered about on this board. Should probably throw something in there about being able to d/l it over Wifi as I've seen that one asked a lot recently, too.

If you have CWM installed it will be overwritten by the stock recovery during the flash.

So my question is, I have stock DI18 (Odined back from dk28 last night) and rooted using oneclick root with CWM 2.5.whatever(not CWM3). I have read that if you are rooted and want to receive the OTA update you must not have deleted any stock applications. Oneclick root deleted the stupid asphalt 5 game demo and I am wondering if this is considered a stock app that may affect the result of downloading the update.
edit: just saw the post above mine after i finished writing this one!

Seems to be a conflict of criteria...is asphalt demo not considered a "stock" app? If it is, then by the OPs criteria even havin root would break the OTA since one-click removes asphalt...
A little clarification please?

I think the main point is everyone should just wait until a cooked up rom is released....who cares if you get the OTA? Ultimately, aren't you just going to put a custom rom/kernel on your phone anyway?

I'm gonna say this one more time. SOME of us just want to have the littlest, simple satisfaction of receiving the cool little feature of an Over-The-Air upgrade. Because really, how many times does it happen? Its like I want to go outside when there's a comet passing by. Yes, I could just pop in a DVD about comets with nice high-def imagery and commentary by Morgan Freeman, but I didn't actlly DO it.
So do not deny nor judge this opportunity for us. If you cant , then don't post here. The thread isn't titled "why the hell would you retards do an ota just wait for some warezzzzzzzzz! Lolzzzzzzzz!" So contribute if you can, otherwise don't.
Plus....SOME of us have been on a 2006 winmo powered brick for the past 5 years and we got to miss out on this fancy little thing called a firmware upgrade...over the air! OVER THE AIR!

What should someone do to prepare for the OTA
Well as someone said above, not every one has gone through a OTA update (I came to the EPIC from a true PALM when the software was really worth something) and some guidance may keep us from having major problems.
The only thing I could think of was to backup my EPIC. I used MyBackup Pro and backup to both my card and online. Anything else I should do????
George

Thanks for the detailed informed post. We need more like them.

I figure this is the best place to ask this.
I am stock and rooted with one click. I am not running any custom roms. Will there be a stock/rooted release that I can dl from this site or am I going to need to odin back to complete stock and take the OTA update. The majority of what I have been reading is to let your rom maker create a new one. Since I don't want a custom Rom yet, will I be able to get the stock/rooted update.
Thanks!

After the OTA starts going out there will be one up on this site pre-rooted and complete stock within like 5 hours.

Awesome... that waswhat I wanted to hear. I will try out roms eventually butwant to see stock first.

Now Rooted. Kiss OTA's goodbye?

Once rooted, even if running the stock ROM with su permissions, will I be able to even receive OTA updates (Froyo)? Or be solely responsible for flashing the firmware myself? Had a G1 before this but I ended up rooting it after all the updates to 1.6 had been sent out, so I'm unfamiliar how the world of rooting and OTA's collide. I would prefer to do as little modding as possible, even though my vibrant is much more of a high end phone than the G1, it got to a point where I was constantly flashing my phone with new mods and hacks and roms, and it got kind of frustrating having little things wrong here and there. I got my adfree so far, thats enough to make me happy for now.

I'm sure right before the update becomes available you'll hear about it and you can always unroot ...
if you install the OTA, you will download the OTA (which is a NON ROOTED update) therefore making your phone get UNROOTED. now, you WANT do avoid installing the OTA's because they will unroot you, but since you aren't running a custom rom on your phone, you WILL get the OTA from t-mobile, you just have to force urself to DECLINE the install (if you want to keep root) you can update to the OTA release if you want to get rid of root, but if you wait a couple days, someone will have hacked a rooted version of the update.

or you can just re-root...correct?
most of the time when an ota update comes out they patch the exploit used to root... this probably will not happen with the galaxy s series phones... 1)Samsung intends to sell 10 million of these phones... 2)It wasnt an exploit, it was left open to begin with
I'm not even sure if T-mobile cares. They allow their customers to post information about rooting their phones on their own forum.
I would post the link but I'm not allowed until my account has been verified.
oh lol, the way i worded my post was inferring that the new update would have "patched" the way to get root, but your responses make me think otherwise lol.
Better safe than sorry if Root is important to you. Wait for a guinea pig to update and verify if root is still an option or not.....
I was wondering the same thing too, but I have deleted most of the bloat ware that came with the brand. So after the ota and unroot, will these programs be reinstalled?
And if I did a factory reset would it restore the bloat ware and unroot the phone?
I got my adfree so far, thats enough to make me happy for now.[/QUOTE]
Is add free really that important? If you don't want a 3mm bar on your screen buy the app. I click the add every time I open an app that is free. If you don't then all the dev will make apple apps... Just kind of selfish if you where to ask me.

i know this has been asked about a million times, but i need to make in a million and one.
im rooted, clockwork recovery, mobile ap installed, and JAC kernel. I do not have any custom roms installed. Because of the custom kernel, im guessing that will keep me from receiving OTA?

Quick OTA question

If there's a ota update and I want to update without being soft bricked... can I go on my one click lag fix undo lag fix undo root and still be able to update without a soft brick?

Nothing is going to make absolutely sure nothing goes wrong. Plenty of people who had never even rooted their phones had issues with the last original OTA. Its always safer to be as close to stock as possible when doing an OTA update just to be safe though.
Personally, the custom roms are already so stable and well done I can't imagine waiting for the TMO official update. I'm currently running Axura 2.0.5...feeling the Froyo love on a super fast rom. Nothing that comes from TMO is going to be close to this in performance.

[Q] Noob ? about Rooted phone and OTA's

I one-clicked rooted my Epic and have DK28 installed. Since then I uninstalled some bloatware (amazon mp3, Nascar...) and installed Wifi Tether. So here comes the noobie question, what would happen if I just installed the OTA after the 26th (assuming this date is actually correct)?
PS. My GPS sucks right now, so, if the OTA is a horrible idea. Would using odin and going back to DI18 be possible with the root and uninstalled apps. From there I could flash back into DK28 and hope for some accurate GPSing.
Thanks for your Help
Cheers

once you root, you CANNOT RECIVEVE OTA's. you will have to flash another rom that has that OTA as a base for it.
So then do you suggest using something like odin to flash back to DI18?
I am sorry for my insane noobdome, very new to this whole business.

You wont be able to get the OTA, but I would recommend just waiting a couple hours after the first OTAs get pushed and there will be few a pre-rooted, CW-redirected basically stock builds pushed out by the developers. Then you can just flash those, and they will be basically stock but have the root goodness and you wont have to go backwards just to go forwards. When the "official unofficial DK28" dropped, it was only a couple hours before devs had them out the door.
Dont worry about the ota ,wait until its rooted and cooked up for us it will be very quickly after it is released. Besides the ota inst coming Sunday anyway. we may see it sooner who knows.

That's not true. You can as long as you don't remove any sprint apps or flash a custom rom. Rooting does nothing but given what is essentially administrator (aka superuser) privelges. You will lose root once the ota hits, but I won't do anything to harm your device. However, it will with stck apps removed.
To answer the ops question though:
Download titanium backup from the market and backup your apps and data. Odin back to di18 and then use the same oneclickroot (assuming you got it from the sticky in development) to get root and reinstall titanium (it requires root). Run a Batch reinstall of all missing apps and data. Bingo. You'll have everything back to normal on di18.

Official froyo and CWM

simple question when froyo official hits OTA will it work if you have clockworkmod recovery?
oops didn't read correctly
so if i have a rooted stock 2.1 with CWM i can update when 2.2 comes out because I'v heard that Clockworkmod blocks OTA updates
No you will not be able to OTA, all you will have to do is download an update zip from here and flash it though.
wow one yes and one no i guess ill just have to see when it comes i just really dont want to have to use odin i heard using that method messes up the accelerometer
Cwm will block ota. Ita checks for certain things to verify install. On of them being recovery. Since your rooted with cwm your best bet if to wait till the devs to cook something up with will be within hours of the ota being pushed

at sucks i want to keep it on stock roms i never have had luck with custom roms in the past they are always glitchy i guess ill just do the odin thing and reroot after 2.2 is out or is there any way to get back to stock recovery without odin

That's what I'm hoping for. I have no issues at all with midNIGHT 2.9.3 but I'm really missing ACS and the xtreme kernel. I'm planning on switching to ACS once 2.2 goes live. It's either that or Cyanogen depending on the state of modified stock vs AOSP roms
I def. Wouldn't Take the ota. Just wait for something to be cooked up here.

I have a hunch that the update.zip from the OTA might flash on CWM... here's the catch, it will have to be an RFS version, so CWM 2.x and it has to be a "stock" DI18
So if you have stock DI18, root and then have CWM then you should be able to take either take the OTA or use the update.zip.... if you're running DK28 the chances very high that you won't even get a notification about an OTA.

Would using the "toggle script asserts" in cwm have any effect on this?
For those that don't know, when you use an assert in C (such as assert(x==10); ), it checks the condition and continues if it matches or ends the program if it fails.

Would i lose root after 2.2 froyo ota update?

Would i lose root after 2.2 froyo ota update on 21st? If so, how do i get back to root? Sorry for newb question.
First u probably won't get the ota cuz u are rooted ......u need to odin back to di18 stock for u to get the update... or wait a lil longer to have one of ur devs. Cook some rom ready for our root phones... personally I won't go back to di18 ... but if our devs told us (which I don't think we need to) to do it.. then ill be happy to do it...
And to get root back from 2.2 do the same method u did fro 2.1

Is the OP on 2.2? I'm still on DI18, and it has been fine for me. I rooted, but that's it. Would I still get the OTA?
It was my understanding that you could get the OTA update while rooted, as long as it wasn't a custom ROM. Someone chime in?
Way to NOT search people, I mean seriously....
But anyway like the last half a dozen threads asking THIS EXACT SAME QUESTION, you cannot OTA unless you are on a stock rom with the stock recovery, if you don't want to revert then wait less than a day and it will be in flashable .zip form.
You should be able to get the OTA if you're rooted on di18 and still have stock recovery. The update will most likely break your root, though. All you will have to do to get root back is run the one-click.
Yes
