XOOM or the Ipad (Game Programming) - Xoom General

I might be getting the Xoom this Sunday when it goes on sale, but was also looking at the Ipad. I mean which is a better choice right now, since googles announcement about pulling the OS. If you are a developer can't you just program a particular appear for what is already available (Game Apps, New UI, etch)

here we go again...
what do you mean by 'pulling the os'?
they're not removing honeycomb at all, theyre just not releasing the AOSP as of yet.

I am sorry, but I was just asking a question, I don't know what AOSP is. I am all for Android and Android development, the main reason for the post was to get opionions on the two devices aforementioned.
I just wanted to hear other opinions on the two devices.

Please use the search button, this has been done so many times in the last 2 weeks, probably 5 threads a day. If you can't find what you need there then come back and ask SPECIFIC questions please.
This is the equivalent of walking into a room full of strangers (say a motorola store in this case) and yelling, "I don't want to contribute at all, but could you all tell me all of the arguments for or against buying a xoom?"

I have the Xoom and I love it! I don't have the IPad but I use it before and didn't really like it. It's basically a big IPod. The IPad have way more apps than the Xoom right now but I really don't download a lot of apps.

I will indeed use the search button next time, I just thought asking this question wouldn't cause so much written sarcasm. If you look at the number of post I have posted you can very well see that I am totally new here.
The title off the board said Motorola Xoom, so I thought I would post my question here, since I will be shelling out around 600 dollars Sunday.
So if I am doing something wrong here I apologize. I thought XDA was a friendly community...........

Thanks el_bori for your input, most appreciated.

For a developer, or anyone with a modicum of computer expertise, you HAVE to go Android. There's a lot of things Android does better, just usually with one or two extra steps involved. If you have computer expertise, the Xoom will far surpass anything you could possibly do with an iPad.

here is my advice.
right now, google's tablet market is a nascent industry. its just starting to take off.
if you want to get into all of the tablet goodness right now, i suppose iPad 2 is the way to go, especially if you're into gaming.
i'm not much of an 'app person'
I'm more of a 'web browser' and power 'flash' user, so the xoom fits my needs more so than the iPad.
if you want to go heavy into gaming (as a consumer) then iPad2 is a better fit as the GPU on there is more powerful than tegra2, and there are more games on iOS than android market.

Trust me. They don't.
Just give it time. Motorola screwed up with opening with the most expensive model when they should have gone with the wifi only version out of the gate. Regardless it will only be a matter of a few short months when Android tablets will be everywhere...and then...the developers will come running.
IOS is a joke but it works and it is simple. Apple will not change that which means the software innovation will be left up to Google. As soon as Apple makes their system even slightly more confusing...all bets are off. Icons are for smart phones in 2008...it is 2011 and soon people will want more and they will want choice...

Mostly don't, some even asked me what's so good about android, I had to ask them the same thing about iOS and they can't even explain that to me xD
I was having dinner with some friends tonight and whipped out my XOOM to show off the NES emulator (the pattern on the table cloths looked like Tetris, so it was only inevitable.)
The waiter came over and was like "Wha...How did you get Zelda on the iPad??" and I was like "It was really easy, actually! I downloaded it from the Android market, because it's a Motorola XOOM. You can't do that with an iPad unless you jailbreak it."
He was in awe. lol

Agreed. Who wants multiple screens with a bunch of icons when you can actually make your screens look like a web site with various widgets with useful information that matters to you.
I feel it too. Everyone seems consumed by the *cough* ipad, that they don't realize tablets even exist for android. The xoom kills 'em all! Android is sooooo much better than the other *cough again* competitors. Once an "apple" lover sees the xoom in action they'll sure change to the better side!

Should've said "how did you become a dumbass?"
might be a bit overboard, but it'd get the point across.
These people aren't dumb nor is it their fault that they're not aware of the Xoom. You should be more annoyed at Motorola's marketing. I have seen one commercial and quite honestly....it sucked.
I think Android will always have this problem...Apple is one company and Android devices are made by a number of different manufacturers. Makes it hard to market Android as a whole. I guess things will get easier once the market is flooded with Android tablets.
Best thing to do is point out the positives of Android vs IOS without being a d-bag.

Really lame fanboy comments on here, but it's a Xoom forum so it's excusable i guess.
If you like your Xoom, then fine, why deride others who like their iPads? If nobody you've come across knows about the Xoom or keeps mistaking it for some sort of iPad-thingy, then whose fault is that? Those people are neither stupid or dumb like you all seem to think. I have an Epic and an iPad, both of which i like and use quite well. Won't be getting a Xoom, not interested, waiting to see the Galaxy tablet.
Where's the marketing from Motorola, where's the push from VZW? You'd think that these were the same folks who made a big push with the "Droid Does" phone campaign that brought Android awareness to all and sunder.
Walk into any BestBuy and see where and how they've displayed the Xoom. It's in some nondescript corner somewhere with no ecosystem of accessories around it (at least the NYC store here). Almost like an afterthought...just something else we carry. No eye-catching signage, no display props, very little employees who go out of their way to even know about it...
This is what kills me why does there need to be marketing for a product you already know about hand possibly own? Plus aple users tend to be vocal about their devices as well fanactical to some extent which is fine. Why do people feel the need to judtify their own purchases or need to bash one in order to like another? I have a xoom, bought an I pad that I never see(wife and kids's really) and think both serve their purpose. Also one of apples biggest strengths isn't their products but their marketing.
You must all be using some different kind of Xoom then me. I love android more then any other OS but this thing is the biggest piece of janky **** I have ever used. Nothing works, everything force closes. Coming from a galaxy tab this is a giant step DOWN. Granted it ran froyo, but it ran it flawlessly. My friends nook color runs honeycomb better then this. Every minute I use this thing I get more frustrated. Picked it up last night bringing it back within the hour. Huge let down.

I understand where you're coming from, LordLugard, and honestly I don't think people are stupid because they think the xoom is an ipad. Its just my humorous criticism of how I hate apple! Lol. Why? Because apple sucks. Why? ...just because. Lol. Im not being negative towards anybody, but think its funny. And I can care less about the exploitation of the xoom. I actually like being a part of something that's not so trendy. However, Motorola is making a lot of mistakes by not marketing the device properly and shipping it off "incomplete". Also, the xoom is super expensive...but I am definitely a happy camper! Its perfect for school, play, and among other things. Xoom xoom baby!

NYC is very much an iPad "keeping up with the Jones" kind of place. I can hear the conversation now. "Have you seen the latest iPad, simply incredible, I must have one". "Wilfred will you hold Tootsey so I can run to the Apple Store".
Handguns and Xooms will probably be banned at Starbucks.

Not sure im liking this Xoom

Trying hard to get used to the 16x9. Also, the weight of it at times I really notice after holding it in bed for a decent amount of time. Also the fact I did not get a data plan and it cost me $853. When I know a wifi only version is coming out that will be quite a bit cheaper. Honeycomb is taking some time to get used to. There aren't many apps for it, so I find myself getting bored. All i seem to be doing with it is web and facebook stuff. I think may return for ipad 2.

Of course it's gonna take some getting used to its a new OS. Obviously there aren't gonna be many apps, as it just came out a week ago.
Sitting here looking at an iPad, a Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Xoom.
Xoom is a bit too bulky. Love the screen size. Waiting for some more apps (I know it just came out, but there are apps on the Galaxy Tab that I want on the Xoom).
Not sure the Xoom is hanging around.
mine is going back for sure
then take it back. What makes people think that we care if you choose so and so over something else. You know what you want so get it. Xoom isn't cutting for you then get something you wwill be happy with. No nneed to share with everyone.
I hope HTC makes a large Honeycomb tablet. I completely ignored them after the release of the HTC Flyer because I didn't appreciate the screen size, and it didn't run Honeycomb. However it was beautiful, and even had a unibody design. The Flyer was definitely a nicely designed tablet, and I do want to see what HTC does with a larger device.
They seem to be the only company that creates Android products (well, Motorola too) that focuses heavily on build quality and design. I assume if they made a larger Honeycomb tablet it would actually look up-to-par with an iPad. The silver Xoom somewhat does. This post is somewhat entirely irrelevant =/
the Xoom is supposed to be a media powerhouse. Which is why the screen is so big. It is a bit heavy, but it hasn't botherd me that much in this last week.
My girlfriend said if I return mine I can go to sunfest in florida next month. Sunfest is going to be awesome with lots of big names including sublime with Rome and ziggy marley. I am 1200 miles away from west palm beach where it will be held. I want to go so bad.
I am not returning my Xoom.
For anyone complaining about it I can see your reasons. I really can. But these were all issues I knew before spending 800$ on it. I knew these issues because I spent lots of Time thinking about it and evaluating my options before I payed almost 900 for it.
If you did not do this you are a fool for spending that amount of money without allowing your brain to process information beforehand.
Someone remind me how many apps were on ios when the iPhone launched please.
Already returned mine. It is a nice product its just not ready for the market. The price is ridiculous for what it offers.
Great, since you are both getting rid of your Xooms you can go to a different XDA forum now. Yay.
Is there any reason why this couldn't have gone into the other threads like this? I don't know why the 6 (yes, random number) people with the same nit-picky issues can't hold each other's hand through the return process in the same thread. It's not even buyer's remorse. It's not being able to put your finger on what you want upfront, and faulting the thing you bought for being the way it's clearly advertised.

HEY GUYS I DON'T LIKE THE XOOM, I AM RETURNING IT OKAY. I'LL COME BACK EVERY NOW AND THEN TO TELL YOU WHY I TOOK IT BACK.
I think these types of threads are stupid.
Anyone who would return their Xoom because someone else doesn't like is an idiot. Now if you are trying to get more information because maybe you don't understand how a the platform works that is different.
So if you want us to help you understand how Honeycomb and the Moto Xoom work that's great. On the other hand if you just don't like it no one really cares. The only person I need to like my Xoom is me and maybe my girlfriend.
Complaining about how people post their complaints won't do any good. They will post it regardless... you might as well ignore it and move on. If I actually had a Xoom and didn't like it, I would sure as hell post in a thread (maybe not a new one) exactly why I don't like it.
All that I'm afraid of is that the Honeycomb OS itself will never make it past the "nice-try" stage. I love the Xoom so far but it IS a risky business right now. I am convinced that other HC tablets will push the demand for apps and updated software but can "we" win the fight? The only time I would be sorry to have purchased the Xoom is when support for it stops and it becomes an orphan. Other than that - still have to break the news to my wifey

Ok. That information would be useful if:
- Your Xoom was suffering from a defect of design (iPhone 4 antenna) that is probably shared with other Xooms.
- If in your research of how the product was understood to work, you found something nobody else had, or were commenting about an issue to help bring about a consensus.
- If there was some way of showing whether or not you were a knee-jerk purchaser, or someone that bothered to take 2 minutes and Google the Xoom before you bought it. This point has been exhausted, but buying a first generation device with an OS whose official innards weren't released to the overwhelming majority of developers even two weeks ago isn't for everyone. It's your own responsibility to research a product. The Xoom is exactly what Motorola said it was, and every issue everyone has ever posted other than nuances to the software was a click away from before the thing was even released. If someone wants to make threads about how stupid they were for spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on something before checking it out, I'll thumbs up those all day.
TLDR - Some of the Xoom's features were advertised as "released in the coming weeks" before the product's release. This is not news, or worth sharing as a reason for your return to the store.
Edit: Just thought of something. The video playback is annoying and was kind of a surprise. I'll totally give you that one. But with some playing around and effort I'm really satisfied with the quality.
returning it for ipad 2 .

Food for thought on iOS/Apple vs Android/Motorola

An exercise for those of you who enjoy arguing about which is the the better product (or don't enjoy it but still can't keep yourself from it):
1. Estimate how many hours you've spent reading and writing in the iPad vs Xoom (and general iOS vs Android) threads. Now add 10% to your estimate because time flies when you're on a rant and you're probably under-estimating anyway.
2. Now figure out what you're paid for hour at work (break down your salary into 40 hour weeks if you're not paid hourly.)
3. Multiply 1 by 2.
Would you donate that much money to any of these companies and expect nothing in return?
No? Then why are you giving them so much of your time and energy?
Android fans: Maybe spend that time in the forums helping people figure out how to do stuff they want to do instead?
Apple fans: Go find an Apple discussion forum. Seriously.
I agree but it's direct competition. iPad 2 vs. Xoom is the hot gadget match up right now and people are going to support whichever they choose.
But in all reality, keep that stuff of the Xoom boards. Debate is good but I'm getting quite sick of the trolling especially when all the counter-arguments seem to be people that either 1. do not own a Xoom 2. that are not used to Android, and they gripe about things that can be fixed now or will be fixed in the near future.
Why do I go out of my way to argue for the Xoom? Because I really love the damn thing. It has been consistently in my hands since I bought it. It now has 90% of my attention over my plethora of other devices including a Nexus S, Nexus One, Atrix 4G (cannot wait to sell this thing), G-tablet, iPhone 4 (GFs but I used to use it a good bit). My friend also has an iPad 2 and I have been able to use it a couple of times. The whole experience with my Xoom tablet has been excellent in my eyes so far.
Another thread on this?
Really? Another thread?
another lame thread. seriously.
People like to argue.
If only more threads like this existed there would never have been an mac VS PC debates...
let me just say this. When I first got my g1 every one of my friends had an iPhone. I would argue with them and finally they saw what they were missing. Now every one of my friends has an android phone and they will never go back.
I can't say much about the tablet debate because I'm the only one with one and its a xoom

Which tablet is right for me?

I know most of the people here will favor android, but I have also posted this on an apple forum. Im looking for overall opinions.
I am looking at the Xoom wifi, iPad32gb wifi, and Galaxytab 10.1 (new one)
Here is my background and what I am looking for, any insight you may have will be greatly appreciated.
I have an iPod Touch, I have never used android. I have played with xoom and iPad extensively at bestbuy for a couple days.
I am in the military and will be shipping to Ft Gordon for about 7 months this june. I would like to get a tablet that will be easier to use and easier to maintain than a laptop.
Some of the things I am looking for is
Size/weight
speed, (I saw xoom can overclock, very impressive)
Usability
Apps
Facebook
Music
Video Chat with family members at home (Desktop PCs)
Email
Web
Also. The size and weight is important. Which is making me want to wait for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, as it has the dimensions of an ipad2, but the power of honeycomb.
The only problem with that, is it comes out june 8th, I ship jun 16th. I fear I will not have enough time to get it setup the way I like before I leave.
Anyway, im rambling, If you have any insight on what I should do in my situation. Please post your thoughts.
~Scott
Why do we have so many thread around "is this right for me"? Can I tell you that you should drive BWM and not Lexus because it is right for you? Or you should eat McD and not Carls Jr because it is right for you? Shouldn't you determine what is right for you?
The best way is knowing what you need and go out and test it out. That is why we have retail stores.
I have played with both, and am still undecided. I am looking for someone who has used both more than I have and has a general opinion.
If videochat is one of the requirements then I would recommend going with the Xoom. The 2mp camera and video gchat and other third party apps are much easier to use with Desktops than the facetime clients.
Gee, I wonder which one people on a xoom forum will ask you to get.
Ask on an Apple forum or a Samsung forum and see what answers you get.
This thread is pointless and if you searched even once you would have found 10 or more threads about this.

Wow, short fuse
Hello, I've tinkered extensively with both the ipad and Xoom. Here are my thoughts on those categories (btw I'm majory Android biased but I'm going to try and step away from that and be as honest as I can)
Size/weight - Definitely iPad, they make very sleek and weightless products
speed, (I saw xoom can overclock, very impressive) - xoom can overclock and that makes it freaking quick but out of the box, they are both very fast. I will say that Apple has an uncanny ability to make very polished products. But the Xoom is very close if not the same.
Usability - Xoom all the way, I just think you have so many more options and such a variety with widgets. Like I said, I'm an android fan but I am one because I love using it more than apple products (very limited and constrained, I just don't feel like I can do as much on them)
Apps - Apple wins but Android has equality where it counts. One note is that many many Android apps are free where as most of the Apple apps are costly. But Apple does have a lot of apps, and good ones!
Facebook - Same except for playing flash games on the Xoom. Heck, I play Rummikub on my Evo 4g in bed with my wife before we go to sleep. It's not polished and perfect, but I can do it with enjoyment.
Music - iPad has iTunes which works very well, if you prefer that. I love android because I can take my mp3 files from my comp, drag them on to the root of my android, and then listen to those files. Nothing beats that for me, and btw my first mp3 player was an iPod back before they were color and I abhorred having to sync with iTunes just to get music on my mp3 player, and the from there not be able to share that music.
Video Chat with family members at home (Desktop PCs) Google video chat seems easier to use with family members because it works with anyone with a web browser (a PC web browser) but I don't have a lot of experience in this matter so don't weigh an opinion on this.
Email - I love gmail and I feel this would be better on the Xoom
Web - Tabbed browsing, speed, and flash make me really like the Xoom.
Hope it helps
Davy
ON you tube there are a few comparison between ipad 2 and Xoom and ipad 1 on each category from size, screen, and usage.
hmmm let me see what tablet would help you out?

I have risked my life for people.
You don't get a free pass for being stupid because you're in the military.
There is nothing to rethink. I have zero intention of continuing this discussion on the forum. If you're inclined to say something do it via pm.

Buyer`s remorse, post here!!

Stop complaining about buying an incomplete device in other sections and post them here. Getting tired of unhelpful info being thrown around on XDA.
Edit
I love my xoom and would never return it, just getting tired of stupid post and tools with no experience lol.
My only remorse is that I didn't buy it on the first day of release.

I am still on the fence. Just got mine a couple of days ago. I have had a handful of problems with apps FC'ing. What I think is really dumb is the case that Staples sells puts the power plug on the bottom so you cant use the Xoom propped up and have it plugged in at the same time.
I am also not convinced yet that I am a good candidate for a tablet. I create a lot of content but don't consume a lot of content. I still have to grab my laptop to do photo editing, faster text editing, video chatting (other than the GTalk app). I don't think a lot of my issues are specific to the Xoom or more Android 3.0 compatibility issues.
I think the vast majority of problems will be sorted out soon but I am not sure I need to pay full price to be an early adopter yet.

Yes, but then the holes for the camera arent in the right place, plus the case is just weak, doesnt hold well and the Xoom slides down and turns the volume down. The case is just a bad design.

+599 (totally worth the price tag)
Love mine, don't plan on selling it anytime soon. And once Honeycomb matures, this thing will be a beast!
I'm about to return my xoom, primarily because the touchscreen stopped responding. Which is a gigantic problem on a buttonless device!!!!!!!!!
I think I am going to go for my money back, and possibly buy the 16gb version when it comes out to save a few bucks.
I am tempted to get an iPad2, which makes me feel like an asshole but all the good apps are on there now. However I am learning java and will hopefully have time to write some apps soon, thereby making an empty app store more of a positive than negative.
Before anyone flames me for thinking of getting an ipad, its just cause I feel like its the one form factor device where I might not care as much if its locked down (of course I will jailbreak it on day one if I get it, and will be dual-booting android on it sometime after the ASOP comes out, google...)
If all I want to do with this device is read/watch/consume content, and ipad has all the content right now, it kinda makes sense. And I am confident the ipad2 could be an awesome honeycomb device. With the amount of sales it has had there should be enough interest in that as a project. Enough to give the google all the more reason to hold off on releasing the source code. Dammit..

Nobody will flame you. Its personal preference. Some ppl like changing devices to fit there pref and some choose to use their device as just consuming data. Don't worry. This device will eventually run stable. We just have to wait.
Do you know me? What should you care if I flame you? The only time I would care if you buy an I pad would be if you bought it with MY money.

I don't know if I got a better xoom than most if the people here but I am freaking loving this thing. The screen is beautiful, the white's are actually white, something I have not seen on anything except the Apple devices. I get no lag whatsoever on my home screens after oc'ing to 1.5 governor set at interactive, and the stereo speakers are really nice. I absolutely love this thing. I got a sweet car dock from a dealer in the UK so I can use it as a bad ass head unit in my car, and when its hooked up to my system with great speakers and 2 12's in the trunk it sounds as good or better than my gf's iPhone 5, something I have never found with any other android device, even my inspire with srs sound. Yes, it has some bugs but for what I need it to do it does it wonderful. I am using it as a complete laptop replacement. I am actually thinking of selling my macbook pro. And I think we are not gonna get many people posting here about their gripes with the device because...
1. They want to start their own post for attention/tolling
2. They don't use the search button
3. There is far to much effort for them to actually read through a forum for the appropriate place to post

LMAO, i hate me some trolls, im made this post hoping it would attract them all but i guess i was wrong lol. stupid people. guess they never used a forum before.
I regret buying the Xoom because I should have waited for a tablet that is thinner, lighter, better screen, working micro sd slot, working 4G and has a pen input, a nornal micro usb that is rechargeable, and most importantly can play high profile .mkv 1080p without needing to do any conversion.
How come no company can do it right?
My biggest question is:
How come no European country make any tablets?
If Germany and Italy can create Mercedes, BMW, Farrari and Lamborghini, they can certainly make a measly sub $1,000 tech device.
keep on waiting. wait on, while we enjoy out Xoom. the best thing invented since the internet. Xoom, Xoom, Xoom...
May I offer these words of encouragement to anyone who has bought a Xoom but who hasn't been involved with Android and modded ROMS before?
The out of the box is not overly impressive when compared, as it inevitaly will be, with the iPad. It is disconcerting to have Forced Closes on a device costing what it does as regularly as one does. And there is not much eye-candy included either.
However, the hardware specs are so good that I have little doubt that the Xoom will be the equivalent of the HTC HD2 (which if you don't know started as a Windows Mobile 6 phone, got Froyo and then Gingerbread and now dual boots into Android or Windows Phone 7!) once the developers get their hands on the source code.
Hang onto your Xoom and you will see in the weeks to come that it will get better and better and, instead of having a gadget which is all shiny and cool for the first week and then becomes old news, you will have a gadget that keeps improving as each new ROM is released.
