I was just informed by a motorola Rep that the wifi only version will not have an sdcard slot. I looked on costco website (yes I know but only thing I can access at work) and it does not list one. Can anyone confirm this???
Several sources are saying it has one....so glad.

Very interesting. Doesn't say anything on the website about MicroSD. I don't see why it wouldn't though?
Amazon says there is MicroSD support, however.
Maybe he meant sim card slot.

Hopefully! But in the 3G/4G Xoom the SIM and microSD card share the same slot.
He said the sdcard would not work until the 4g update and since the wifi only didn't have the 4g slot, it also doesn't have a sdcard slot.

Wow... guess we'll find out in a few days.
Does Xoom have GPS? Haven't even looked at the specs really. Preordered my wifi only 2 days ago.

Everything I have read to date leads me to believe this is a falsehood. The SD slot is completely dependent on a Honeycomb update, not the 4g.
We get them in tomorrow, hoping the boss man will let me look at a box/read it...maybe open the display

So you will have to be connected to a network?
agps is a normal gps that can be assisted by other sources. no agps is soley dependent on radio, they will all work with just satellite signals.
This from the Amazon site.
Memory
* 32 GB internal memory
* Memory expansion via microSD card slot with support for optional cards up to 32 GB (functionality requires future software upgrade).
If it doesn't.. I'd said it's false advertising. Plus, it really doesn't make sense for it 'not' to have it. I just imagine the 'sim card' door will say microSD instead. If it says anything on it at all now. If I were Moto, I wouldn't change the design between 3g/non-3g. Having the same door for both is pretty smart. Just means the Wifi version is microSD only.
My 2cents.
hmm yeah that WOULD be false advertisement.
Also, aGPS ... I never get that. Just say GPS Chip with aGPS support. Less confusing. GPS Chip = no need for data to get signal.

agps means it will connect without a network, but to get directions you will need a signal. Once you have them you can drop your wifi.

Yeah.. I don't see a MicroSD spec on there...
BUT.. their 3G model doesn't say it either and it's got the hardware for it. So it's anybody's guess at this point. Interested to see what we see in the next few days (or tomorrow if you get to crack open that box).
Here is the 3G page: http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Tablets/ci.MOTOROLA-XOOM-US-EN.alt
Lastly.. I can't imagine Amazon came up with the description text on their site all on their own. Motorola had to supply that.. you would think at least.
The fact the 3g model doesn't show it gives me hope...

Matt on the official forums says it's not true. It has an SD slot.
Well, I'll admit that I haven't done any research on this, and it's a rumor I heard today.. that the wifi xoom is going to have the sim card slot activated in a future update.. meaning those of us who have the wifi version will be able to drop in a sim card and get 3G data.. anyone able to disprove this? I'm not counting on this, but it would be sweet if it was true.. lol

1. There would be a lot of pissed off people who paid the extra buck.
2. The hardware isn't there so it'll never happen.

Just because the it has a slot doesn't mean it has the hardware.

I believe someone on this forum found the sim card is functional? just no drivers to use it.
I've never held a doom before but I plan on getting one.
They have similar card slots? And if this is really true... wow Verizon customers got ripped off badly.
Hopefully the sim card slot won't be restricted to any carrier

I never said I had proof or anything.. It was just a thought.. plus when I look in the slot, I can see contacts in there.. so atleast the socket is there...
Look at the tear down and you will see what we are talking about. There is no connectors on the motherboard for the 4g module, if you are really good you could solder something in and figure out where to get the hardware to connect.
Might as well by the 3g version!

Christ, the misinformation in this thread ...!
LTE requires a SIM for authentication (whose socket is installed on the board but otherwise unused), and is UNRELATED to the CDMA that the Verizon 3G versions use, which authenticate via the MEID of the 3G radio, which is NOT installed on the WiFi versions.
i read somewhere (maybe here) that whats missing is the radio so without it there is no use
theres a mini pci-e slot maybe we can install 3g radio just like laptops
False info.... do some research before you post a whole thread dedicated to a rumour.

I can't decide if I want a 3g or just wifi. The difference in price is quite substantial £579 vs £479 I believe. I wonder if it will be possible to use a dongle or mobile phone as a hot spot. Any comments?
I tried out the Mobile WiFi Hotspot app on my HTC this evening and the WiFi Tab connected to it easily, I was on a reasonably quick 3G connection at the time and everything worked really well. I was sat in my car (waiting) and I suppose the downside to this is that I was draining battery on 2 devices at the same time.
If you're indoors then you could have one or both devices on charge and battery would'nt be an issue.
Lot of 3G users feel there is no love for them on the forums since most dev's create Wifi only ROMs. Wifi only Tabs are more common here in the US and have been out a lot longer, so development happens more frequently.
I went for wifi only because everywhere I go, generally has free wifi available. I tether with my Captivate if I can not find a wifi signal.
3G IMO.
Tethering just ends up draining the battery on two devices at the same time and a lot of networks charge extra for it (thankfully I have it included in my tariff).
Also, the 3G Tab has a memory card slot whereas the wi-fi only model does not.
If you do go for the 3G Tab, Three have a SIM-only data tariff aimed at iPads which gives you 10GB for £15 on a 30-day rolling contract.
One of the best value data tariffs in the UK and better yet no fixed term.
You have an SD card slot on your Tab?

In which case my apologies, everything I'd read so far (even on here) said otherwise.
That's really pretty criminal of Samsung, it's not like the issue of, say, a full-sized HDMI port which wouldn't fit onto a device like the Tab, there's no good reason for them not to have included a microSD slot.

Sent from my HTC Hero using xda premium
You couldn't run a dongle directly from the Tab, you wouldn't have the necessary drivers.
You could use one of the mi-fi devices but then you're back to tethering and having to charge two devices etc.
I've got the 3G version and there's definitely no SD card slot...
3G is the way to go if you plan on using it outside, I'm nearly 3 hours a day in the bus and it's really handy
I was thinking about getting WiFi-only version and tether with my HTC Desire, but it's a huge battery drainage for the phone and i'm on public transport 2hrs/day, so i ended up with 3G version (anyway it's pretty hard to get 7510 here in Russia, they are not yet officially distributing it, we have 16Gb 7500 only). As for ROM situation, don't worry Stock ROM is pretty smooth with V6 supercharger script + OC 1.4Ghz Kernel.
TLR version: ask yourself "Do I have free WiFi everywhere i go?", because tethering everyday with your phone is not cool.
I pretty much echo the other 3G users, when I bought my iPad last year, I got all the way to the check out with the wifi version, then changed my mind at the last minute and got the 3G version, it was the best thing I did, so when it came to getting the Tab, I wasn't going for any other version than the 3G version.
In my opinion, it's an accompanying mobile device, if I have to go and find somewhere that had wifi each time I needed access to the net, it wouldn't be very mobile? I just get my SIM cards of Ebay, 3GB of data to use in 3 months, cheap as chips.
So in short "3G version, every time!"

That presumes your network doesn't charge extra for tethering.
In the UK, only one network offers tethering by default on all tariffs but you still get better value paying for one of their mobile broadband tariffs.

I don't know which country are you living but why you have to pay twice for your data ? In my country we pay for what we use. Your tablet don't have 3G you still have to pay 3G fee for your phone, your tablet have 3G you don't have to pay 3G for your phone and pay for tablet only.
By the way, 3G tablet was the best choice if you can buy it.
Well, I got my newly upgraded to 4G LTE Xoom back yesterday. I am extremely pleased with how quickly the process went and how well the Xoom runs after the upgrade. I never had a Verizon contract on my Xoom. I only used it on WiFi. I pulled the 4G LTE SIM card out of my Bionic and stuck it in my Xoom and fired it up, and it worked.
I really don't know what the implications are of doing this. I only left the card in the Xoom for about ten minutes, then put it back into my Bionic. I was thinking about going to the Verizon store and asking them about it, but I am sure that they will just tell me the same thing they told me before I got the upgrade...that there is no way it will work.
It seems that for people who were grandfathered into an unlimited data plan on their phone, this would allow them to move their unlimited plan to the Xoom.
On a side note, the phone still functions as a 3G smartphone with the 4G LTE SIM card removed. For those who live in a 3G market, pulling this card out should not make any difference because the LTE is disabled for now anyway.

Why pull out the sim? Are you going to get longer battery life with the sim out?
Will that make the XOOM only work on 4g, or will it enable 3g also even if the XOOM has never been activated?

Only 4G...for the 3G to work, the Xoom has to be activated. Still pretty cool. I have the 4G hotspot on my phone, so it really is of no consequence to me. I just figured I would let you guys know that the 4G Xoom can get on the 4G network with the SIM out of a Bionic.
Has anyone tried putting an activated Xoom sim in an LTE phone to see if that works too?

This is neat, and I have unlimited 4G hotspot on my Bionic, but I hope to heck Verizon doesn't decide to close this little hole, because it'd be a nice perk for those of us who fork over massive amounts for both 4G and hotspot, and are using the tablet with the hotspot anyhow, to be able to just put it right in the darn tablet.
I've almost decided to buy a Nexus 7, but the lack of 3G is a real deal-breaker. Moreover, from what I've read, you have to pay 50$ more for the 16GB model to install more than 2-3 newest games.
I wonder whether it would be a better idea to buy the 8GB model and a mobile WiFi 3G router (MiFi). There seem to be lots of such devices made by Huawei, eg. E5331, E5832, E583c-2, E585, E586, E587. Such features as a replaceable battery and a microSD slot (you can access a microSD card as a network drive) sound really nice. It seems to be a perfect solution - it is convenient (nothing sticks out of your tablet), you can buy an extra battery if one proofs not enough and you can use a microSD card to extend your limited storage memory.
But does it work? Is the 3G connection stable? Can you install a game on a microSD card based network drive? Will the WiFi transfer speed be sufficient for playing that game? And how long will the router battery last while you're playing?
If someone owns one of the routers listed above or a similar device please share your experience.
Ive been using huawei mifi device since june 2011. I basically use that in all my devices - laptop, phone, android tablet and ipad.
Internet speed still depends on how fast ur network in ur mifi device. You can store apks and whatever files in it as well and u can access the microsim through a web browser admin that comes with the wifi.
With that said, u can install games from mifi device microsd. But it wont let u stream from it. From what i understand, u plan to use the storage like being able to transfer games to sd card? It doesnt and wont work that way.
Hope this helps.
Cheers. Buy a 16gb

Had a Huawei E5830 for about a year after it came out... worked just fine but "only" 3.6MBps top speed. Upgraded to a Huawei E585 which does 7.2MBps and a still happy with that. Of course the speed out actually get is dependent on the network, signal strength and how many other people are trying to use it... not felt the need to upgrade again to the 21.6MBps model (E586 I think it is) yet...
Wifi signal to both is solid and typically I use mine when travelling by train or staying in a hotel that doesn't offer free wifi (although I prefer my own connection that I manage even then because I know where my data is going...)

Thanks for the replies. It's a bummer that you can access a microSD card only through a browser. It seems that a microSD slot is pretty much useless. It would be nice if it at least supported some network protocols like NFS or SMB.
I'll probably wait for a while to see whether a Nexus 3G and/or 32GB version will become available.
