I just did the unthinkable!! I dropped my hour old titan in the toilet... but here's the problem I have disassembled everything and made sure it is perfectly dry but it still wont work. All I need to know is:
On the OEM battery is there a water damage indicator?
On the top of mine there is a red dot to the left of the contacts, could some benevolent soul take their battery out and see if there is a red dot on the top and possibly post a picture???
Thanks a million!!
A picture isn't really necessary, could someone just tell me whether or not their battery looks like this
Mine is white
If the only water damage indicator is on the battery, maybe you could just get a replacement battery first.
Best option is insurance, but it might be a little late for that.
#@$% hum I wonder where I could by a new battery before I try to return it... Thanks for your help!!!
Paypal $25 to [email protected] and I'll mail you mine. I got two through an insurance accident. that includes shipping to the US...
there is a water damage indicator, it's a white sticker under the battery, if it's blue, they won't replace it, they don't cover water damage even with insurance.
best bet, and tell me you got insurance and if you didn't call htem said it's an hour old, get insurance added.
then claim it was run over by a truck, and get a new unit.
oh, there was an article on gizmodo or lifehacker that talked about how to dry out a device was literally put it on rice for a few days.
mine is white too
I would almost be certain that there are other water damage indicator strips inside the device in addition to the one on the battery.
Too Funny
As I would like to remain professional and will refrain from using every smiley face in the list to the right 1000 times. And I also would like to say how much I feel your pain. I absolutely must ask: What were you doing on the toilet with your titan only an hour after buying it??!! <end roflmao>
If your mogul is brand new, call them up and tell them that you want the insurance. You have something like 30 days or something to get the insurance. They will then just replace the phone.
White dot on mine as well.

ewww, your phone smells like poopy.
Play DUMB.....thats the best thing to do....if it really was only an hour before take it back play dumb ..."its not working?"...
I had a "friend" who did this at BB after running a Sanyo 4900 over with a truck.....
YES... it worked....
I have not confirmed that this works but I heard that if you get a ziplock baggie and put the pieces in it with Silicate packets for over 24 hours that it will absorb the moisture out. Make sure you squeeze all the air out. A buddy said it turned the red dots white again for him.

Verizons insurance will cover water damage. Besides if they didn't you can tell them it was "lost," they cover that also.
It's done!
Thanks for all the help guys!! I went and bought a new battery at altel (I'm with sprint) then dried the phone over night with rice, then blew it out with a CO2 duster. The cool thing is, after all that the phone WORKED!!! not very well though so I took it back and said I bought it the day before and the screen was jacked up.... they didn't even open it... (It was running at the time so i guess they didn't suspect water damage)
and for all of you who were wondering I was reaching from the sink across the toilet to grab a towel and knocked it in (after playing hacky sack with it for like 5 seconds....)
Again thanks for all the help, I'm going to try the silicate gel thing and see if I can return the battery I ruined
FYI - Water damage appears to be covered for Sprint customers...
I had my (first) Mogul from 5-2007 through 12-2007, when a very unfortunate thing happened...it leaped from my hip into the only water for *at least* one square mile. I phoned Asurion (Sprint's insurance provider) and explained the occurance (I hadn't previously even considered that water damage might not be covered). Simply stated...they sent me a new phone and I paid the 'deductable' and all was right...except for the lackluster performance of this particular device
sprint covers water damage, but only if u have the Equipment Replacement Plan...not Equipment Service plan. the ERP covers just loss and water damage, and it is only $4 by it self..another type of insureance is also avalible, it includes both ERP and ESP and it costs $7.

Running water over phones is not known to break them as much as you might think. Drop it in a pool though and its a goner.

Dude, why the **** would you put your EVO in water in the first place?
Anyone else notice that it was stuck on the "HTC EVO 4G" Boot screen for almost 4 minutes?
Was this a real phone, or one of the retail displays?

From your reaction on the video, you were expecting it to stop working and ruin the phone. Why would you want to do this in the first place? It reminds me of all those kids out there that intentionally break every toy they get just to break it. Do you break every PED you get?
I call BS. The water would run into the speaker slot at the top and through the cracks, and the screen doesn't change the entire time.
Im pretty sure it was stuck on the boot screen, that's probably why he's getting a new one but...... last time i checked the boot screen is white with black letters. Could be mistaken though

But that's a terrible way to kill it. The water damage sticker on the inside will change color, and that could potentially void his warranty. I'm not 100% sure about that, but there are a hundred better ways to break your phone than water damage.
yeah, he probably doesn't know that there's a water damage sticker. tough luck on his part if he actually does break his phone and they won't replace it!
I thought it was a display/dummy phone until he turned the light off. That is unless he rigged up a led inside a dummy phone, which is feasible.
Low voltage electronics are usually fine when submerged and then dried out. Ive had my kids put hugely expensive digital cameras into the dog bowls, toilets etc. My friend Chris just dumped his iPhone4 into a swimming pool, besides a little fog on the screen and a set off moisture sticker its fine.
actually I'm getting my new phone on monday.
Try it again only put a bunch of salt in the water. That will finish it.
I had an electronics class in high-school where our teacher put all kinds of electronics in different fluids. All of the lower voltage dc stuff would work until you put salt in the water. And a lot of times would still work whenever you dry it off.
On a side note. Yes there are pink water damage stickers but am I the only one that removes them with an exacto knife before using the phone? I just hide them in a safe place in my filing cabinet and then if I do have to send my phone in for warranty I just pop them back in and they never know. Just watch out. There is usually one on the outside casing and one of the battery and maybe even one inside the phones casing.
I don't do this to be deceitful honestly. I do it because the humidity is so bad in southern Illinois that all of my phones water stickers would turn flat pink and look like they had been submerged even when they never even saw water. A lot of times just setting my phone down in the bathroom while taking a shower would set them off as well, from all the steam.
From my experience the EVOs are in no way water resistant. I placed a few drops of water on the screen to apply the invisible shield and the water went right through the sides and inside the screen. Who makes a $500 phone without a sealed glass on top?
Anyways, I was extremely disappointed but the guys at Sprint were nice enough to get me a free replacement.
Why is his EVO 4G boot screen black with white text? Mine is the other way around (white with black text)?!

Is the liquid damage indicator normal? If so, swap it out with your provider. If it indicates liquid damage then see if there's an out-of-warranty replacement option and cross your fingers.
You could try drying it out with rice or silica dessicant. It might take a few days. Got any picts?
Anyone know how many liquid damage stickers are on the device? I know the one by the battery is still white. What the hell do i say. I just woke up and it was damaged.
That happened on my G1 and someone told me to pull the battery and set it on top of the refrigerator over night.
I know it sounds weird but the next morning it was dry. Something about the warm dry air coming from behind the fridge.

Put it on anything that radiates heat, nothing extreme but something that is somewhat warm to the touch. Refrigerator works well, also a PC, DVD player left running, etc.
Leave the battery out for 24-48 hours and see if it dries up the moisture...
Dry heat will help but be careful in case there's something that produces humidity nearby. I wouldn't leave mine on an appliance in the kitchen. I'd opt for an actual desiccant like silica. If you have a new jacket or pair of shoes you can find a packet in there. It's a long shot but rice also works in a pinch.
If that fails I'd send it to the OEM and play stupid. I don't think there are other LDIs in the device but if there are, I don't believe your provider would charge you a replacement fee because you checked the only one that's accessible. Just check it out with the respected technical department you talk to before sending it on, or ask a retail rep if your provider has a store or kiosk at a nearby mall. Just say you normally keep it in your pocket or in a protective case and boom, screen got messed up.
Same thing happened to mine, def the computer or fridge is a great way to get rid of the water. But only dry heat!
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yeah, it doesn't seem that huge problem, just give it some time and warmth
Some people have heated the (electric) oven up to 40-50°C and put the phone there, but I would recommend that only if any other method doesn't help..
Dry rice or silica dessicant. Take out the battery and stick it in there for a few days and it will be good as new.
Don't heat it, it won't work any better than this method.
Well I let it dry on top if my cable box and I happy to report all but four very very little dots dried up. I've learned my lesson and will only be doing dry installs for now on.

Some of these clear body shields are wet-applicant. They come with a little thing of liquid adhesive that you apply first. I've been around phones long enough to know that they don't play well with water, so I've steered clear, but I know plenty of people who don't have issues with them.
For the record, every wet-applicant protection system I've ever seen explicitly states that you should only apply it with the battery out and leave it out to dry for ~48 hours (to prevent exactly this).
Yes but this is my only phone and there's no way I can not use the phone for that long.

Haha, very creative. I wouldn't even think to use a cable box as the heat source even though I've been running one of those laptop cooling fan bases upside down on top of mine to vent the heat that was killing hard drives.

When messing around with phones to the degree that most of us do, it's always a good idea to keep a cheapo backup around.

I would highly recommend picking up a cheap backup - you never know when you'll need it. Typically you can just snag the cheapest prepaid phone that T-Mobile offers, they usually have something for $20 or less. Toss the SIM it comes with and just keep it around for an extra. That way, if something were to happen with your main phone, you've got *something* to keep you going until you can figure out a replacement.

yeah, and if this is not your first T-mobile phone, you can just go back to the old phone for a day or two while you wait.
Mine had the same thing from a paper cup leak onto the table my G2 was sitting on. It didn't resolve with the rice/heat tricks but T-mo switched it out under warranty. No down time because they ship the replacement and you send the defective one back in the same box.
Get closet dehumidifier. It's at Walgreens in the hardware section. It comes in a plastic tub and you put it in your closet to remove moisture from your clothes. They're little white beads in a basket with a cup underneath to catch the moisture. Put your phone in an enclosed space with that.
If the water was clean it should leave no residue. If it was soapy then you will probably have marks left over afterwards
:-(

Still works but the screen is foggy and flickers alot.
A friend of mine was telling me that something in the batter triggers and sprint can tell if it had water damage or not. How can i tell and look for that?
I also want to take it in but dont want sprint finding out about the water damage. Is there a loophole?
Shifted from my EVO
Well first things first. Turn it off, pull the battery. Do not try to restart it. You have several choices to dry it out. One really and proven one is rice. Fill a container half way with rice. Then stick your phone in the rice with the battery out, and the cover off. Push it down into the rice, and let it stay there for at least two days in a warm dry place. The other was actually used by a member here on XDA. He used is a Dehydrator. Not sure of the details, but it definately worked. I'd say set it on low and leave it there for at least 24hrs. Sprint can tell if the phone has been dropped in water by checking the water damage indicators. On the phone itself, and the battery. They're Red checkered squares. They turn bright Red when dropped in water. Although it has been proven they're not very reliable.
^^ is correct about the indicator on the battery. Its a little sticker and i always pull it off and take it to them. Once they asked me about the sticker and i just told them i have no idea what your talking about and that i didn't know about any sticker. Playing dumb helps
Take battery out....Stick it in oven on warm heat...take it out after 10 minutes to let it cool down.....repeat like 4 times.....
Sounds freaky but i fixed an iPod Touch and a Droid X with this method
Thanks for the replies guys. I ended up using a hair dryer on heat. It's not that bad of a condition. Everything seems to work properly (so far). This would happen when a ICS beta ROM comes to our phones... -_-
is there any other indications that sprint would be able to tell if it had water damage?

Nope, unless there is still water in it when you take it there, oh and don't use a hair dryer, all that does is "push" water in deeper through all the electrical wiring and circuits, plus it can melt parts of the device

+1 to not using the hairdryer . It will not work as well as you think. There's a good chance that you still have moisture in the device.

Why we're here.
So I was relieving myself after a double thanksgiving dinner this morning and I was reading the XDA forums (Of course).. The phone landed square on my mess and dropped through and continued to end up in the hole in the bottom of the toilet. I fished it out with my bare hand because well, its a nearly 400 dollar phone and I just dont care - I'll just not bite my nails for a couple days after I wash them.
Thanks to google for the Non-Removable battery! I'm basically f*cked. The phone was still turned on and working through all of this. I wiped all the crap and water off of it, set it down and thought about what the hell I could do. I frantically flung the phone up and down in the swinging motion to try to get the water and crap out from inside it, which it seemed to only be coming out of the speaker hole and ear hole. OMG. I put it in a bag of white rice (which will probably turn brown) and stuck it in a cabinet. I'm afraid to even go look at it. I don't know if I should tear it down and try to clean it but let me tell you, I'm glad I ordered 2 of them. I'm still waiting on the other which is on back order.
Is there anything else I can do? How long should I leave it in the rice? The phone wasn't in the toilet long, but It's probably going to smell forever. /sigh

How long should I leave it in the rice? I wouldn't sell it on ebay but since I bought two maybe I'll give this one to my girlfriend and keep the one that's on back order, thank god she's not on XDA she will never know. I had finally talked her out of using her iPhone and switching over to Android. If it still smells or anything and still works I can always just say they are made overseas with somewhat of a toxicy smell to them because of the plastics they use or something I guess?

Yeah, distilled is non-conductive as I recall. That's why they always recommended for liquid cooled computers in case of a leak.
