My HD2 got wet, dried out, turns on, has some issues now.

I had it less than a week. I have NEVER gotten a phone wet in my life (45 years old.) and I had this one for less than a week and my dog rammed into me (Big dog.) while I was standing near the sink, texting, and bloop, it goes into the soapy water. I got it out with moments and popped the battery out.
I must mention that when I pulled it out of the water it was vibrating constantly and the LED's on the back were blinking quickly.
It was soapy water with dirty dish crap in it. I got on line and read immediately. I followed the directions to a T. Soaked it in distilled water for about an hour and then let it dry by the exhaust port on the back of my computer.
48+ hours passed and I attempted to turn it on. Insert the battery, nothing bad happened. Press the power button, after a second or two it vibrated and the screen lit up with the logo and my heart was happy. It booted into Windows and I was very relieved.
It was short lived. There are some issues.
There is obviously moisture trapped under the screen. There are dark spots, light spots, swirls, etc. You can't see it too much in Manila but when the screen turns a solid, lighter color (Like in Task Manager or Opera Favorites for example.) you can see the swirls.
People can hear me clearly when I speak but I can barely, oh so barely, hear them talking to me. The volume in the ear speaker is very muted.
The rear speaker, for music, nav directions, speaker phone, etc. is nothing but crackles. I mean you can hear and deduce what's coming out but it's buzzy and crackly the whole time. Just awful sounding.
The touch screen has some diminished sensitivity, maybe 10% less reactive all over and up to 75% less reactive near the edges.
It's so bad that I'm using some piece of crap back-up flip phone from eons gone by. I pray nobody calls me in public so I don't have to pull this piece of crap out. It's that bad. It's magenta too. (That's the manliest word I can think of for pink.)
In your opinion, do you think my HD2 will improve over time? Another full day has passed, back in front of the heating vent. The screen has changed some. I can't say that it really got better but it has changed. Some of the solid water lines that were there are now muddled. Perhaps a 5% improvement. The speakers show no sign of improving nor has the screen sensitivity, they are the same crap as yesterday.
The speakers are really the deal killer, if I can't hear people then it really isn't a phone.
Everything else on it seems to work fine. GPS, Wifi, data, etc.
Should I give up on it, dump it for cheap, and move on to something else like the Nexus One maybe, or wait until T-Mobile US gets their HD2s? (Is there a release date for the HD2 in USA yet?)
What is your opinion, hopefully based on experience on this?
I lost my job last week (Business closed.) and honestly, I'm more sad about this phone than I am losing my job. I know that's twisted but I loved using this phone. Loved everything about it. I miss it dearly, even though I know it's just a phone.

Of course the half a second it was in the soapy water wasn't enough to get all the parts really soaked and the water didn't get a chance to get in all the parts and between the lcd and the touch screen so you decided to put it in water again for about an hour just to make sure.
I'd hate to see you rescue a drowning person.
Anyway I'm sorry for your loss.. maybe you can get a friend's insurance cover it.. (figuring your dog has none). Also dry it some more..

Well it was longer than a half second. It slipped under some dishes and I fumbled awkwardly a little bit trying to get it. I would say total submerge time was probably 6-7 seconds. It looked very wet to me. When I popped the battery there was definitely soapy, dirty dishwater coming coming out of the insides. Maybe I did more damage by soaking it in distilled water but it was overwhelmingly recommended on the internet when I searched for wet phone.
Edit: I'm in the US and this phone was not released here. Is there a way to have insurance on a phone not purchased through typical channels?

Bit of a long shot, but have you tried recalibrating the touch screen? Don't think it'll make a huge difference but... never know.
Regarding the speakers, you are probably SOL. I think you'd be surprised what you can sell a busted phone for on ebay.
Re: Insurance, did you purchase it with an AMEX or a 'premium' Visa/Mastercard? You automatically get some coverage.
This actually makes me very nervous because it reminds me that personal digital (the aussie dealer for the T9193) didn't accept AMEX, so I used my normal Visa... sigh. Off to buy a warranty.

That's a good idea, I'll give that recalibration a shot.
Are the speakers made of paper? Did they get wet and become permanently damaged? I've since read dozens and dozens of stories on the net about wet cell phones and I've heard nobody mention anything about permanent damage to the speakers. Does the HD2 have some kind of unique sound system which might make it more susceptible to water damage?
No on credit card, purchased with cash on Craig's List.

I blew some compressed air (Not high pressure but a decent blast.) into the grills but no difference on either. I can't imagine what's in there, other than a torn speaker, which could make the cones not move efficiently. Maybe some kind of corrosion in the magnetic motor behind the cone possibly.

remember when you search for solutions online to check the date when it was posted.. that distilled water trick maybe worked for nokia 3310's.
Also be carefull with air when it's wet.. if it is paper, I don't know.. but imagin what happens to it if it is and it's still wet.... I'd carefully use a hair dryer... and leave it dry for a week, not 48 hours..
I've seen a Dutch insurance company that insures your phone online without questions.. you just pay a fee for stepping in (€25). There must be something like that in the states. I don't know if you have home insurance, but some companies nowadays also cover mobile phones and laptops, even when your on the move.

That's a very good point and one I didn't consider. A couple of the stories I read were about touch screen phones so I assumed it might be applicable.

I do have home owner's and that's an excellent idea. I will call and pick their brains first thing in the morning.

You may want to query one of the parts replacement sites to see if they can get you a speaker. Something like truesupplier.com or cnn.cn (Just as a reference, I'm not vouching for the legitimacy of these sites.)

the non capacitive touch screens are indestructable compared to the HD2's.. anyway.. I would have tried without first..
I know my comment didn't help much after the damage was done but it just seemed like the last thing I would do.. that's all. what's done is done. Let's just see if you're insured..!

I've had my fair share of wets phones and I don't think 48 hours is long enough for it to dry out completely.
Cover the phone in a cloth and sit it on top of your television for a week.
Don't forget, you let the phone sit in distilled water for an hour, that's plenty of time for water to soak deep down into the nooks and crannys.

That's pretty much what I'm doing now. Only difference is that it's sitting behind the exhaust vent on my computer which seems to be a nice temperature for drying without being too hot. My TV is a plasma and has no flat surface on top.

HARD RESET <<<< & don't use your phone with battery cover for few days so water evaporate

at this point i would be wondering if soaking it in ethanol / alchohol would do it some good. my reasoning:
-Alchohol / ethanol / similar is a water dispersant and evaporates very quickly
- the liquid is much thinner than water so will get into every nook and cranny
- its wort a go since it seems like its a bit buggered anyway

From what I've read the 99% denatured alcohol rescue is split between two camps, both far on one side of the option or the other.
I guess getting it under the screen might help but I can't see what it could do for the speakers.
If I do this, and I'm very hesitant to do it, it will be a total last ditch effort when I've given up all other hope.
I think some long term drying is in order, and maybe a couple of fingers crossed.

he is better using >>>> the spray for cleaning microcircuits, I have try it in the past and it works very well.
Take out the btery and spry it n all parts. It will dry by it self in few minutes time

Do you happen to have a product name you can recommend?

cover it with newspaper, then go get uncook rice, cover the phone & newspaper with rice, leave it for a week for completely dry.
Or have a lot of dry silicagel, you can use it as well. If what you have is those type usually found in dry food, make sure it dry otherwise it won't observe water. If it brand new like those found in glossary store, then just put phone in big zip lock bag with the silicagel (or something where air cannot go in or out).
Just remember, don't heat it (like hair dryer, hot air, etc) as that will speed up the oxidize and have rust on small parts in your phone.

to an extent i'm sure,
I was folding laundry and my 18 month old daughter grabbed my vibrant and wandered into the bathroom. albiet i should have been paying closer attention but needless to say i walked by the bathroom, looked to the right and there she was dunking it in and out of toilet. I freaked! but the phone is just fine everything works like normal and the water damage indicator is still white so i'm assuming it's somewhat waterproof!!!

I would never make the claim of something being waterproof... Very water resistant, however. I'm glad for your Vibrant

If the indicators didn't change colors then I'd return it to be safe and get another.

Can you ask your daughter if she can test scratch resistance of the screen and report back?

i dropped my vibrant from my ear on to a hard floor with no dings or scratches. i think its drop proof too

I lost my G1 due to a sodium hydroxide bath. So the first thing I did when I got my Vibrant was to take the back covers off. The mating surfaces may be tighter, I did not observe any sealing surfaces. The insides appear to be more closed than my old G1, especially against splashing.
I'm still worried about walking out of the freezers at work into rooms with saturated humidity. Hopefully a vendor will make a silicone slip on cover that can withstand the industrial abuse I give my phones.

Just messed up my screen. (w/pic)

I was putting on a screen protector and the water got to the screen now the lower part of the screen is very white. Still very readable. What do ya'll recommend I do?

Is the liquid damage indicator normal? If so, swap it out with your provider. If it indicates liquid damage then see if there's an out-of-warranty replacement option and cross your fingers.

You could try drying it out with rice or silica dessicant. It might take a few days. Got any picts?

I know it sounds weird but the next morning it was dry. Something about the warm dry air coming from behind the fridge.

Put it on anything that radiates heat, nothing extreme but something that is somewhat warm to the touch. Refrigerator works well, also a PC, DVD player left running, etc.
Leave the battery out for 24-48 hours and see if it dries up the moisture...

Dry heat will help but be careful in case there's something that produces humidity nearby. I wouldn't leave mine on an appliance in the kitchen. I'd opt for an actual desiccant like silica. If you have a new jacket or pair of shoes you can find a packet in there. It's a long shot but rice also works in a pinch.
If that fails I'd send it to the OEM and play stupid. I don't think there are other LDIs in the device but if there are, I don't believe your provider would charge you a replacement fee because you checked the only one that's accessible. Just check it out with the respected technical department you talk to before sending it on, or ask a retail rep if your provider has a store or kiosk at a nearby mall. Just say you normally keep it in your pocket or in a protective case and boom, screen got messed up.

Same thing happened to mine, def the computer or fridge is a great way to get rid of the water. But only dry heat!

Some people have heated the (electric) oven up to 40-50°C and put the phone there, but I would recommend that only if any other method doesn't help..

Dry rice or silica dessicant. Take out the battery and stick it in there for a few days and it will be good as new.
Don't heat it, it won't work any better than this method.

Well I let it dry on top if my cable box and I happy to report all but four very very little dots dried up. I've learned my lesson and will only be doing dry installs for now on.

Some of these clear body shields are wet-applicant. They come with a little thing of liquid adhesive that you apply first. I've been around phones long enough to know that they don't play well with water, so I've steered clear, but I know plenty of people who don't have issues with them.
For the record, every wet-applicant protection system I've ever seen explicitly states that you should only apply it with the battery out and leave it out to dry for ~48 hours (to prevent exactly this).

Yes but this is my only phone and there's no way I can not use the phone for that long.

Haha, very creative. I wouldn't even think to use a cable box as the heat source even though I've been running one of those laptop cooling fan bases upside down on top of mine to vent the heat that was killing hard drives.

When messing around with phones to the degree that most of us do, it's always a good idea to keep a cheapo backup around.

I would highly recommend picking up a cheap backup - you never know when you'll need it. Typically you can just snag the cheapest prepaid phone that T-Mobile offers, they usually have something for $20 or less. Toss the SIM it comes with and just keep it around for an extra. That way, if something were to happen with your main phone, you've got *something* to keep you going until you can figure out a replacement.

yeah, and if this is not your first T-mobile phone, you can just go back to the old phone for a day or two while you wait.

Mine had the same thing from a paper cup leak onto the table my G2 was sitting on. It didn't resolve with the rice/heat tricks but T-mo switched it out under warranty. No down time because they ship the replacement and you send the defective one back in the same box.

Get closet dehumidifier. It's at Walgreens in the hardware section. It comes in a plastic tub and you put it in your closet to remove moisture from your clothes. They're little white beads in a basket with a cup underneath to catch the moisture. Put your phone in an enclosed space with that.
If the water was clean it should leave no residue. If it was soapy then you will probably have marks left over afterwards

Water Damage - My story

It's pretty late here so i'm going to keep this simple.
I preordered a black s7 the day it was announced, got it on March 7. Had an s6 before.
It's amazing and all, but what was not so amazing for me was the water resistance.
It got pretty dirty after 1 day of use, so I thought it was a good idea to gently wash it with water and soap - Samsung claims it's water resistant, right?
As soon as i finished washing it, the phone started acting like I was pressing the volume down button. Shortly after that, it started showing the wireless charging animation, again and again.
I decided to power it off, I got my hair dryer and I ejected the sim tray ; was very surprised to find water all over my sim card and the sim tray itself. The water damage indicator/sticker was also touched by the water, making it turn from white to red/pink.
After heating it up with the hair dryer moderately, I powered it on. Surprise, it won't get past the "Galaxy S7" boot screen, like most Samsung Galaxy phones do in case water enters the phone.
It was rebooting after 10 seconds and doing the same thing. This lasted for 10 minutes. My biggest concern here was amoled burn in (google it if you don't know what it means). I managed to boot to recovery and power it off.
I waited for this phone a lot, 3 months to be exact, and turning it into a brick after 1 day of having it is not a good feeling at all.
I put my phone in a bag of rice and left it on the desk. 3 hours later (i had to go somewhere), I got it out of the bag of rice, and powered it on. It went to recovery, I chose to reboot to system, and it did boot. All the features and sensors were working.
Last night I tried rebooting it and it would do the same thing like it did after I washed it. Left it in rice overnight and today morning it booted up. So yeah, something is still broken, but at least I have it working now.
I think the soap caused the water to enter the phone.
I suggest you don't try to wash your phone like I did.

*edit*whoops didn't read the part about soap. yeah, only like lukewarm water they suggest.

Water Resistant, Not waterproof. Tell Samsung about this and they'll tell you all about it.

Water resistant means just that it doesn't mean that it is solvent or cleaner resistant, no cleaners ever just water I feel your pain sir I had to learn this the hard way as well.

OP, you'll have fanbois jumping all over you wanting to educate you on water resistance and water proof like its rocket science. Point is that they are all wrong. IP 68 means you should be able to do exactly what you did - wash your phone off in water for a few minutes. These S7s just don't seem to be holding up to their IP 68 ratings (I returned an Edge because an underwater photo caused water resistance to fail and fast charging to not work anymore).
Feel your pain. Send it back under buyer's remorse and get another one.

OP used soap. It wasn't the water, it was the soap. Soap is a base and messes up all kinds of things. Possibly reacted with the nano coating or the seals.

I've washed my S5 several times with soap - and that is only IP67-rated. Should be fine.

A few weeks ago I watched a video on how Samsung obtained it's IP68 rating for the S7/E. The video explicitly mentions relying on the surface tension of water to keep it out of microscreens for components like the speaker. Lower the surface tension of water, and it will flow places it didn't before.
Lesson learned for all of us.

Apples to oranges. The two devices have totally different construction. Anyone who takes your advice with an S7/E is headed for the same trouble as the OP.

After checking out a teardown of an S5, I do see the difference speakerwise - the S5 have a selfcontained speaker, which can handle water - while the S7 doesn't and as you said, relies on surface tension. That's not good..

And the S5 doesn't have internal gaskets on an SIM/SD slot or it's USB port.

You should have learned at the physics classes in school that water does not conduct electricity, but as soon as you add soap it becomes a conductor. So you have shorted all the exposed connections, like the USB pins, headphone jack pins and what not. The water resistance of the phone is not based on protecting the SIM tray, the seals are between the SIM tray and the rest of the phone, so you also shorted the SIM contacts.
At least now you know

Thanks to everyone who replied to my thread, I went today to the carrier I bought the phone from (Orange)'s store and they told me to send it to warranty, and that's what i'm going to do. Hopefully i get my phone replaced, lol
It sucks that if i want it to boot i have to wait a day with my phone in rice, that also means bye bye installing new firmware which is the reason why i'm sending it to warranty since I always loved flashing custom roms, besides that I wouldn't really mind waiting a day for it to boot but I'm afraid that one day it will not boot anymore.

You don't have "buyer's remorse" where you live? Here in the US, we get 14 days (20 in some cases) to return the phone no questions asked for a full refund.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my thread, I went today to the carrier I bought the phone from (Orange)'s store and they told me to send it to warranty, and that's what i'm going to do. Hopefully i get my phone replaced, lol
It sucks that if i want it to boot i have to wait a day with my phone in rice, that also means bye bye installing new firmware which is the reason why i'm sending it to warranty since I always loved flashing custom roms, besides that I wouldn't really mind waiting a day for it to boot but I'm afraid that one day it will not boot anymore.

Hmmm, I could swear I saw somewhere that Samsung will look for the white tags that turn pink when wet. If they see that the tag got wet then they won't honor a warranty. Not sure if this is true but somewhere today I read that. I think it was that tear down of the S7 ifixit did. or it was a link from there.

I have an update, and I want to describe here exactly what happens every time I power it on:
Galaxy S7 screen -> boots straight into recovery.
Every time I reboot from recovery it does the following:
Galaxy S7 screen -> completely black screen -> Galaxy S7 screen -> recovery.
Every single time it enters recovery, it displays an android figure with two refresh arrows spinning, then displaying a yellow exclamation mark warning and shows the recovery options. Does it do this only for me or for you guys too?
I have tried to:
reflash the rom both via odin and kies
factory reset a bunch of times
wipe cache a bunch of times
I have done everything possible to get rid of ALL the water, and I'm sure there is no more water in it. I vacuum'ed the motherboard and left it in rice for 3 nights. does the same thing.
Warranty is also gone because the water damage indicator turned red/pink from white.
I think it's either permanent physical damage to the motherboard, or the water damaged the emmc chip and somehow corrupted the memory (???)
I also made a video of me powering it on, then rebooting it, but I'm unable to post it because new members can't post links until they've reached 10 posts.

Actually by stating that it's IP68, it should mean that the device is indeed water PROOF. IDK why would samsung conflict the two things. If it's water resistant only, samsung should've stated that it's only IP67. False advertisement don't you think?

True story:
When he was 8, my little brother snuck our pet snapping turtles out into the woods behind our house and played with them in a muddy puddle. Thinking he would get in trouble for taking them out of their bowl and getting them dirty, he washed them with soap and hot water, which killed them. I was traumatized by their deaths, and have never used soap since.
So at least my S7E is safe.

As HTC U11 is IP67 rated, things were turning in my head for few days, and I finally take my courage to put it on the water.
Many video are testing that point, but what I find was a little bit obvious.
I have no problem with the phone after its dive on the swimming pool, I only put it 15 or 20 cm max on it. If the screen is working, nothing from the software part was working. I feel like watermake a pressure on the multitask button : I would like to take some pictures but everytime I try to squeeze and engage the photo module but every time, the phone stop the photo application and run the task changer app ... Reall curious.
So I'd like to see if someone here try to take picture under water ?

Thank you for sharing. I did not try this with my U11 yet but my S7, S8 and XZ premium worked fine under water or with water on screen.

It was in a swimming pool, with no salt treatment

Tested it today. I wish there's an under water mode that turns off touchscreen and touch buttons.

HTC claims the phone has an ip67 rating, so up to 1 meter for a maximum of 30 minutes it should actually be water proof.
I regulary submerged my S7 and used it while showering, the phone was still running strong after a year. Even screen worked under water, pretty cool.

did you try to open the camera 1st and set a timer. After that dive and take the picture?

They also claim water resistant.
Water-resistant: able to resist the penetration of water to some degree but not entirely
Water-repellent: not easily penetrated by water, especially as a result of being treated for such a purpose with a surface coating
Waterproof: impervious to water

Yeah, I wouldn't trust the IP67 rating at all. Also, that's for fresh water, not chemically treated water, soapy water, etc. The warranty information also says that water damage is not covered under the warranty so if you're unlucky and you have a seam that isn't sealed and your phone dies, you've got an expensive paperweight.
Its kind of backwards considering that the M7 survived CNET's ridiculous torture tactics including dropping it in a soda, throwing it out of a moving vehicle, throwing it on a BBQ... They thought it was dead but put it in silica packets for a week anyway and to their surprise, it actually powered on. If I remember correctly, the only thing that was wrong with it was the charging port got damaged in the toss so they had to fight to charge it.

There's no doubt the U11 can't stand up to the same torture the M7 and M8 could. The screen didn't sustain any damage even after being chucked twice out of a moving vehicle while the frame actually started to lift.

Hi, I had a similar experience to yours. As a work around, what i did was submerge only half of the device inside the water(upside down). I was able to get some pictures and videos. But its tricky as you can really see how the picture is coming as half the screen in submerged and the other half is above water. But nevertheless the camera performance was absolutely brilliant.
I do agree, HTC should have an "Underwater" mode that disables the touch buttons and touch screen (but leave the display on). It would be very useful.

Has anyone tried the glove mode for under water pictures? That worked pretty well on my Sony in the shower, so who knows

There is no way I would put my U11 underwater on purpose, it states on the HTC site that it is only water repellent not water proof but go ahead and test it for us I would like to know how well it does lol.

I work as a construction worker and I've already washed my U11 with clear water at home, because it had a lot of dust on it and inside the charging port. No problem at all.

I just went swimming with my U11 in my pocket. Maybe about 15 mins at 3-4 feet. Currently drying right now. I got itchy and tried powering it on perhaps a bit too soon but I got the HTC screen and it locked up. Screen went off and let it sit for awhile longer. When I press the power button the green LED comes on but nothing else. Waiting and praying it's not dead!
