[Q] Having some (basic) questions about i5800L - Galaxy 3 General

Hi all,
I've just got my new i5800L, and I've already rooted it with z4root. Here are my qs:
What's all that of XXJPM and all that stuff? Which one should I use for mine? (actual one is I5800LVIJG7 (Eclair)).
Is there any way of doing a nandroid (full copy of the actual rom which can be flashed easily) so if I mess things up or want to get back to Eclair I'd just have to flash it back?
I guess that's all by now. Thank's in advance.

JPM is the latest froyo rom...you cant backup ur whole rom as if nw we dont have any alternative for this...check flashing guide in sticky and see vdos on youtube. ...happy flashing...

Thanks..
I've downloaded 2 files (2 diferent versions). One was a zip file with 3 files inside and the other one was a rar file with 4 .tar.md5 files. The zip i don't know how to apply it because odin will only take .tar or md5 files and in the other one I don't know what to do with all the .tar.md5 files. What should I do? :S

Hope this helps

Thanks, now it's booting (on the samsung screen). I think it worked. But now it's "orangeized" XD. I'll keep looking for the right tar XD
PD: is it ok if it takes a while on the "samsung" (the one with the glow, after the GT-I5800l screen) screen? cause it's past a few minutes and still on that screen and I'm starting to panic XD
EDIT: It's been more that 15 minutes since it's stuck at that screen. What should I do? Please, second day with it and already screw it XD

Flash the JPM firmware...you shud get it as a tar package...a single file...
but sometimes u will have 4 files
1. bootloader
2. pda
3. csc
4. phone
dont ever flash the bootloader file in odin with pda csc n phone tar files...because the risk of bricking goes high...
just flash the 3 remainin files...n when ur fone has booted...just do a hard reset

Great, now it works again! Thank you a lot. And now I finally understand how odin works :-D
which custom rom do you guys recomend?

Don't forget the i5800L is different from the i5800, but the only difference is the 3G antenna frequency. If you install JPM you MIGHT have 3G connection problems, or then again you might not. You MOST LIKELY will see a battery life decrease because of this issue. If you want really badly to have Froyo (android 2.2) you can flash a JPM ROM. If you want your battery to last a couple of days, either wait for an american release of froyo, or keep your Eclair version.
I have a i5800L from VIVO, originally with JG7 as well. When I installed JPF (previous froyo release) I had issues with the 3G network, when I flashed Kyrillos custom JPM ROM i also had problems. When I flashed Lestatious custom JPF ROM I didn't have problems, and when I flashed clean JPM i didn't have problems either.
So really, its a question of luck.. although let me tell you, my battery lasted way way longer on the original JG7 firmware than any other release (including the JK1 Eclair, said to be the best Eclair released before froyo).
Remember though, if flashing separately (not as one package), avoid flashing the BOOT file or BOOTLOADER. Flashing this increases the chance of bricking your phone. Not flashing it decreases the change by 1000000000000 times.

Yeah, I can see that. I'm with Kryllos v3.3 and the battery only lasts like about 16 hours :S. I guess I'll go back to I5800LVIJG7 (The one which it came with).

About that, if I flash the bootloader (with all the others too, of course), and it upgrades ok, then there's no problem, right? I mean, if I try to downgrade again, it'll work fine? (Yes, before I read the comment telling me not to flash the bootloader, I did it and it was successfull. But now I don't know if it'd make it fail when I'll downgrade to I5800LVIJG7 :S)

It's not about upgrading or downgrading. When you flash, pratically all the memory on your phone gets erased, which means you can upgrade or downgrade at will with no problems.
The problem is, when you flash a bootloader, and say, for example, you have a power outage, or your computer decides to give more resources to your MSN or winamp you have running on the background (or whatever else), or even there is a problem with your cable connection or a spike in power, or whatever other mishap that can occur, the bootloader might not be able to transfer successfully. If that happens, you won't be able to boot your phone. If you flash everything except the bootloader and something happens, you will be able to at least go back into download mode and reflash the files needed.
Basically the bootloader tells your phone to start. If that gets corrupted, it simply won't. If you avoid flashing this and even if the transfer gets corrupted, you can always do the process again by going into download mode (which is installed along with the bootloader)

Great, thank you so much

Just bought brand new BELL galaxy s i9000M

My question is , how can I backup the contents out of the box to a .tar file that i can load up in the pda section of ODIN in the future if needed ?
The phone is baseband I9000UGJK4 kernel 2.6.32.9 and build froyo.ugjk4
I would like to have a permanent backup on hand of this before I change the os on it if I decide to do so or mess something up lol
So again , question is how can I back this up the the .tar file like we download from samsung for future flashing or restoring? Thanks guys
Strange that your phone came with JK4, since this version has been pulled from kies by Samsung.
I think you should upgrade to JL2
It came from futureshop just today , do you know how I can backup the contents to a .tar before I start changing things?
Update immediately to JL2. Don't load any other firmware until you have done so. This is important! Your likelihood of getting an internal SDACRD failure is very high until you do.
Important that if you use Odin, you select the flash boot loader option.
Strongly agreed. Use Kies (Samsung's official app) to FIRST do the upgrade. If anything happens during the upgrade, take it back immediately to the store for an immediate replacement (how long ago did you get the phone?).

I agree with gtg2, DvTonder and zorxd. Upgrade to JL2 with Kies A.S.A.P. JL2 can prevent the dreaded dead internal SD card issue so many people are having.
Install Kies, plug in the phone, and update the phone.
When Kies is downloading JL2, it will go into your temp directory. Copy it to a different directory. I did and I have the original JL2 on my computer for when I need it.
If you can't get it off your computer, you can download it from here.
Ian
OK done that last night , bought it 2 days ago. Updated through KIES last night so now that worry is over. I cannot find the temp folder you say I should have the downloaded firmware in though , nothing in c:/windows/temp or in kies folders
Here this is stock JL2 just flash it with odin in PDA.
JL2.
You can find odin instructions in Allgamers Thread here.
One thing you might want to consider is rooting your phone, if your on JL2 use Super One Click located Here. Another Method to get root access would be to flash Hardcore's kernel odin versions and installation instructions Here. Once Hardcore's Kernel is flashed then just boot into CWM (VOL UP+Home+Pwr) and find root in the menu. I recommend going the Hardcore Kernel method just cause from there you can go to Doc's/Darky's/Seearm's or another custom rom of your Choice.
Once rooted get Root Explorer or equivalent file explorer and make a backup copy of the EFS folder . Store it on your PC somewhere. If anything ever happens and you need to return the phone to bell just flash the JL2 I linked with odin and you will be back to stock.

why would you back up Jk4 it is broken version, I am surprised they Samsung still put it on the phone...please please upgrade to JL2 as soon as convenient and that backup
Now to answer your question, im not really sure if you can make a backup tar that you can flash later with odin. I think you're trying to do something like an iphone backup that saves everything, files and settings, even the background you had on your phone.
What i do is keep a copy of the stock firmware from samfirmware.com and then i make a backup using the app "titanium backup". You can find a free version and a paid version. Before i flash a new rom i backup everything and then copy the titanium backup folder from the internal sd to my computer, flash and then restore all user apps and settings. Flashing a new rom has never formatted my internal sd card so the folder is always there, i just copy it to my computer just incase. Ive been told not to do a restore of systems apps and settings on doc's rom though, not sure why. Maybe another user can clarify.
Lastly hold onto the receipt with your life because you will at some point in time end up with a dead sd card I recommend doing a stress test (does not void your warranty). Go to the thread here for stress test info.

[Q] odin to froyo 2.2!??????

This may sound like a very dumb question but i am just now getting into the different things i can do with my phone. One of which is i have rooted it and installed clock work manager. I have seen A LOT of people talking about odin and using it to install froyo 2.2 on their phone. I was just wondering how you actually go about getting odin on your phone, or is it something installed on your computer to transfer files to your phone? my main objective of all of this is just to have froyo 2.2 finally installed on my phoneso if anyone could please give me the run down on this and the info i need to install 2.2 on my phone, or a web page that shows you how to install it once i have odin, it would be greatly appreciated!!!
Odin is a program used to flash .tar files (modem, kernel, system) onto your phone while in download mode.
A little poking around here (I would link you but I'm at work) and you will find the Samsung Drivers, The Odin program itself, and recently someone posted Odin files for 2.2
If you have the .zip of 2.2 (or Superclean 2.4) all you will have to do is flash the eb01 modem in Odin, then install the .zip file through CWM.
Follow ALL instructions in the threads you find to the T or it will be a pain in the ass to get your phone back.
Remember: When using Odin NEVER USE THE PHONE BUTTON. We use the PDA button for the Fascinate.
PDA = Good
Phone = brick (that's bad)

If u get the eb01 sc Odin package...it comes with rom obviously so u don't flash anything in cwm. However... future roms you want will b flashed in cwm. All u do is boot into recovery, instal zip from sd cars, choose the zip from sd card....select it...and hit ok

Ok, easy way to get froyo... go in the fascinate develpment section of xda or droid forums and look for ODIN eb01 package. It will load you up froyo, new clockwork, and root your phone all in one shot. The directions are super easy, just follow them exactly. I did mine this way, you dont have to mess with clockwork at all, ten minutes total. Let us know how you make out.

[STOCK ROM]Use for going back to stock before flashing a custom ROM with minimum risk

\\\\\\\\\\\\warning///////////
It seems that phones batch 1010 and newer dont like this method of going back to stock. If you're caught in a boot loop try flashing the official froyo for Captivate. One source can be found here
\\\\\\\\\\\\warning///////////
Disclaimer: Anything you do with the content found in this thread and the content that this thread links to, is your own choice and you are fully responsible for what happens to your phone.
This method is for ATT Captivate ONLY!
We all know that there is a very often used method of going back to stock found here. The problem is that the ODIN OneClickDownloader contains both boot loaders and param.lfs.
These files, if not flashed correctly or if the connection between phone and PC drops while flashing them, can brick your phone for good. The reason why would this happen is because of unreliable USB drivers.
The purpose of this thread is to give flash addicts/custom ROMs users a more secure way to go back to stock - JF6 - without risking bricking their devices.
Do not use this if you want to send your phone back to ATT or Samsung for warranty!
Use this if you want to go back to stock before flashing a custom ROM.
Use this without worries if you changed your boot screen image or if you flashed the secondary boot loader which allows you to enter download/recovery with key combos.
This package contains NO BOOTLOADERS and NO PARAM.LFS!
Download the package from here
Download Samsung Kies and install it. It will install the latest Samsung drivers.
How to:
Remove sdcard and SIM card from the phone
Extract JF6_secure.zip somewhere.
Boot in Download Mode (see below)
Run Odin3 v1.3.exe
Click on the button PDA
Choose JF6_secure.tar.md5
Click start.
Wait and do not unplug cable until it is finished
How to boot in download mode:
There are 3 methods:
Method 1: (ADB) - from recovery or normally booted with usb debugging on)
Open a cmd prompt/console/shell
adb shell
adb reboot download
Method 2: (KEY COMBO)
Remove the battery, sim card, sdcard if you have one
Insert the battery
Hold both Volume buttons
Plug in the USB cable and continue holding both Volume buttons
Method 3: (JIG)

If moderators believe this does not belong in development, I have nothing against to moving it to General. However, I think the community would appreciate if it would remain here.

Just used this to go back to stock prior to flashing another ROM. Worked with no problems and only took about 5 minutes. Will use this from now on to avoid the possible brick.
Again, really appreciate you providing this for us.
Still not sure why one would use this over the DG Odin? Maybe someone can clarify?
Here is my scenario. I'm currently on Cognition 3.04 which I flashed from stock. It was my first ROM so I didn't have to go back or do anything with Odin. Now, if I want to flash a new ROM, I plan on using Odin, jut not sure which one???

on top of the read phail, i would add that you dont need to flash stock between roms, you only need to do it after a failed flash or a "no wipe" rom that depends on original files, **which they dont do anymore**. All the good full roms do a wipe before flashing. so there is no point going to stock! hope that clearifies!

I thought there was more to it than people having bad usb ports. You're saying if one does have a bad usb port and flashing gets interrupted, their phone would be bricked with the DG Odin, but with this Odin it would somehow be ok?

If you own a computer you definitelly heard about BIOS and you heard that if the BIOS gets screwed (CMOS chip burned or bad BIOS update) you can pretty much throw the motherboard.
Well, imagine that your phone has 3 BIOSs
primary bootloader - boot.bin
secondary bootloader - sbl.bin
hidden partition for system images - param.lfs
and that they are dependent on each other and if one of them gets screwed you wont be able to get to recovery and download mode.
The one click downloader contains all these 3. My package does not.
Get the point?

[HOWTO]Install zKernel on Wolfbreak's TW 007.1 ROM [UPDATE-THIS THREAD IS NOW OLD]

UPDATE: WOLF HAS RELEASED TW 007.2 THAT INCLUDES THE zKernel.
Thanks to that, the process is much more simpler now. Just flash the files as it says in the Wolf thread.
Mods, please close this. Thanks to all who used this and hopefully this helped you in 007.1

Thanks...guide is updated
3.Go to settings-About phone. If, under kernel version, it says anything other than "2.6.29-zKernel-23062011 [email protected]#1", then you will have to do this.
Navigate to system/kernel using root explorer or similar app. DELETE boot.froyo.img, and RENAME boot.img to boot.froyo.img. Restart.
If it shows that kernel version, then skip this step.

Thanks a lot for this awesome guide. Im sure it will be very helpful to many users.
I followed ur guide to install custom kernel on WB TW007 with baseband .67.
But Im stuck on step 3. After flashing boot.img in Xrec I couldnt see custom kernel version in About Phone so I navigated to system/kernel using root explorer. There was only just one file named boot.img. So I renamed it to boot.froyo.img, rebooted but still get the stock kernel version in About Phone
Any kind of help will be greatly appreciated

hmm...I'm assuming that you have Stock kernel, right?
First, try re-flashing the boot.img file, but first wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache, then do the whole replacement an renaming. If that doesn't work, then try this:
(Thanks Haldi4803)
3. Restart Phone and enter X Recovery: Install first: "chargemon_FXRec_default_CUSTOM.zip" and then "bootloader_bypass_files_v2.zip"
Then, install the kernel on top of that while still in xRecovery. So, you would have installed all 3 files together . Please report back if it works so I can add this step in the OP.
^ Yes! Im on stock kernel. Sorry for not being clear.
Aiight. Im trying what u said right now and will report back.
EDIT: Nope. Nothing worked. Flashing all 3 files didnt work. On the other hand phone started lagging like hell after flashing. Its not responsive at all and Im constantly getting FC on System Process etc
Any thing else??
Hi everyone, dude, I tried follow u tutorial, but this didn't work (ok ok, I'm noob, i tried start this with Stock kernel...). Then I installed TW007.1 with Custom Kernel and didn't appears Custom kernel.. ok, i tried to install Z's custom kernel, following u tutorial and nothing again
What should I do?????

u were most probably using xRecovery... flash FreeXperia recovery using FLASHTOOL and then try those files...
BTW if u use "chargemon_FXRec_default_CUSTOM.zip" then u dont need to do any renaming cause that files uses standard boot.img file name
cat /system/kernel/boot.img > /proc/splboot/boot_img
^ For some reason my Xrec is broken and I cant get into Xrec so I tried to install Rec thru Flashtool. It isnt working either
Insall Recovery option is disabled. I click on Ask Permissions, it says allow Superuseraccess on the phone but nothing happens on the phone. I cant do anything on the phone as it keeps FC Process System. It sometimes even doesnt detect USB conncetion
Is the SEUS repair the only option???

sadly, yes. I'm sorry about your phone, I wasn't sure if it would work with the stock kernel. another option could be to install the 3. 52 kernel first before following my instructions, or wait for wolf to officially release a kernel.
again, sorry about causing you to do a full repair
Na u dont need to be sorry. U were trying to help. I might've done something wrong or it was a bad day for me after all. Im repairing thru SEUS right now. Might give it another try in a day or two if WB doesnt officially release a Zkernel supported version of his rom.
But thanks once again for everything and keep up the good work
To those on the stock kernel,
Try to install the 3.51 kernel first, found here, then follow my instructions.
You won't get signal after installing the 3.51 kernel but that's ok, since it's meant for BB52 anyway. Your BB might become unknown as well.
That's what I do on a fresh install
Get baseband .67 first then
1) Fresh install TW007 stock kernel
2) Reboot and check for signal
2) Flash 007.1 update
3) Reboot
4) Flash transparent add-on (Optional)
5) Reboot
6) Flash zKernel_22062011.zip
9) Reboot and you will have the custom kernel but system keep on crashing and no signal
10) So I just reboot and flash this two files by DoomLord

[VIMP NOTE FOR FROYO USERS who do not see any change in custom kernel after flashing the boot.img]
Download link: (wifi.ko module only)
http://www.mediafire.com/?lmh46quh490mzme
VERIFIED WIFI WORKS!
11) Signal is back and system doesn't crash
12) Reboot
13) Flash Contacts_ProSE _FIXED.zip & fb.zip
Thanks to them.
Everything is working. Use cpu master to overclock, it sometime give WLOD though
@gohwh1
u have linked to slightly older files...
i have posted updated kernel 23062011 based on FreeX10 ramdisk... which should work without any issue...

If that's working for me, I don't have to change right? Only problem is when overclocking to 1113mhz and playing games, it will WLOD when it's get too hot. Playing games for 3hrs non-stop and only one WLOD is normal right?
The updated kernel will not fix that right?

[Q] help with three-four things?

I'm about to just flash my phone for the first time. can someone please help me with the following?
i have an i5801 and i want to keep it that way after flashing. so i just need to delete boot.bin and sbl.bin right?
does deleting these two files also ensure that i don't hard brick my phone?
can someone give me a link to download indroid 4.3? (that is the best version of indroid, right?)
what is the ops file? where can i download that from?
and what is this "package" that i need to download?
and last, how do i clear the cache?
btw, these are questions for the steps given in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=873645

Firstly flash Indroid 4.1 :
Link To Indroid 4.1 [Part 1]
Link To Indroid 4.1 [Part 2]
Once the download is complete, extract using WinRAR/7Zip. The 'package' is the .tar file you find inside. Flash it as 'One-Package' using Odin.
Here is the link to the OPS File :
OPS File
How to Wipe Cache :
After flashing 4.1, reboot into Recovery by pressing and holding Volume Up + Volume Down + Menu Button + Power Key. The phone will boot into CWM. Scroll down (using the volume keys) and select (using the menu key) the option that says : "Wipe Cache". Ignore error messages (if any). Click on Reboot System.
From what I see, Indroid 4.3 is an update.zip file. Which means, you need to have CWM already installed. After installing 4.1, download 4.3.
Download Link for Indroid 4.3
Now follow these instructions :

You should have Indroid 4.3 up and running in your device now
I know it sounds tedious. But believe me, it isn't that hard
DUDE! THANKS A GAZILLION!
REALLY appreciate it. *pushes thanks button*
oh ya, about the boot.bin and sbl.bin
do i delete them to retain my i5801 boot screen? or to make sure my phone doesn't get hard bricked? or both?
so if i delete them, there is NO WAY how i can ruin my phone?
sorry for being so cautious but it's my first time flashing, and i kind of lost my bill. so my phone is out of warranty. and if it does get hard bricked, that'll be bloody expensive.
thanks for the earlier post though.

Yes. If you delete boot.bin and sbl.bin, you will retain your I5801 bootscreen and you ll not get your phone hardbricked. You can manually delete them or stock firmwares without boot.bin and sbl.bin are available here in XDA. Check the development section.
k, thanks. last question : according to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=873645
in step 4, it says :
"4) Check protect ops checkbox (Don’t check this if you are flashing I5801 with I5800 firmware for the first time.)"
i'm using an i5801, and i want to flash InDroid. but is InDroid i5800 or i5801 firmware? so should i check the box or no?
answer this and i'll be able to FINALLY flash my phone.
like i said, sorry to be so cautious over even petty details but if something goes wrong, i'm screwed because i lost my bill so i'm pretty much out of warranty (also, because i rooted my phone, so the bill doesn't matter).

Its based on the updated firmware for India (DDJP4). Swype and Camera bugs fixed.
And yes, you can definitely flash it!
Okay, dude. sorry to bring up this post again but i had (yet another) internet-not-working-days. Anyway, i downloaded the two Indroid 4.1 parts and they're 001 and 002 files. WinRAR says it might be broken or damaged, or it doesn't recognise it. Also, I can't seem to download the 4.3 update. Is there any other site where it is hosted?
And I currently use DDJP2, but everywhere on the forum people use JPM or now DDJP4. I can flash Indroid, or any custom ROM no matter what stock firmware i'm using right? Or does that also matter?

No problemo.
Download HJSplit and use it to join the split archives (InDroid 4.1 CWM Clean.7z.001 and InDroid 4.1 CWM Clean.7z.002).
Or, try this Torrent Link. Might be slow, but its bound to work!
And yes, you can flash whichever ROM you wan't. Hell, I didn't even know which firmware I was on the first time I flashed a Custom ROM!
Incase you just can't download the InDroid package, move on to Kyrillos' ROM. Its equally good.
Good luck
