[Q] Have to ask, has anyone tried the brightness-dimming windowshade slide? - Epic 4G General

While I was temporarily on EB13 I found that the brightness slider was much harder to activate, required a much slower and deliberate finger drag. I use this all the time so would love for someone with EC05 to describe if this function has changed any. Also the framerate of the camcorder at 720p in low-light conditions!
Thanks all!

the finger slider brightness control was the most fluid on Di18
EC05 - doesn't work as well as Di18 but not as bad as EB13 FWIW
Haven't messed w/ the camera yet.

I actually like it better on eb13 because there is a delay before the slide works. On eclair I was changing the brightness inadvertantly all the time.

Ya, me too. I like eb13s method better, hold the status bar for a sec, then slide over to change.

Yes, it's quite jittery/stuttering.
I just compared it to a Galaxy S i9000 and they're pretty close, but the i9000 might be a bit less jittery. Hard to tell.
I also compared to my Nexus One (I have a lot of phones, LOL) and it's just as jittery/stuttering. The software's been updated recently, so perhaps they broke it with the update. It's not unusable, but it's too sensitive to be a good experience...
I believe with the latest update there were settings that toggled how frequently the sensor data is polled. Try playing with that? I don't have the NS yet, though I have the N1

You are correct. Menu/settings/sensor_settings. Changed Sensor Speed to "slow" and Damping to "high" and get much less jittery. (Still not nearly as smooth an experience as the similar apps on my iPhones.)
Definitely jittery. Even after changing sensor settings. Was much smoother on my G1. I predict an update to Sky Map in our future...
I also feel the digital compass is way too jittery compared to my previous nexus one and G1. It shows clearly in any compass application and in the skymap.
I wonder if others are seeing the same exact issue and this is some sort of a software error or this is actually a hardware bug.
I have this problems with SkyMap: after I used SkyMap the screen does not rotate more (the accelerometer sensor not work), if I reboot everything returns to normal...this happens also to you?
Same to me

Yea the compass on the NS is similar to how my Vibrant's was... crap.

[Q] Change the vibration intensity?

Hey, guys! Quick question: I updated to the DK28 stock ROM. I've noticed that the vibration when the phone rings is pretty weak. Is there any way to increase the vibration of the phone when it rings? Thanks!
Setting>sound>vibration intensity
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That's the problem. The only option I get is for haptic feedback vibration intensity. The ringer vibration correlates directly with that.
The intensity has really dropped off with Froyo. I remember it being MUCH stronger. It's strongest is now like 75% of what it was on Eclair.
I noticed a huge dropoff in my vibration strength a while back as well, but not from froyo. I'm not certain this was the cause but I first noticed it after overclocking my phone. It wasn't the first time I overclocked but it was right after setting up a new OC kernel. Don't remember what kernel however, it was probably back in October/November...
Haven't seen any fix for it yet.

Well, it's good to see I'm not the only one having this problem. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Samsung fixes this in the official update. Thanks for letting me know.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. Samsung seems to have enough problems with basic functionality let alone people who are messing around with things they "shouldn't".

Epic video camera = junk.

First of all, id just like to say, i love my epic, however.... i had it for almost a month and today i tried the video camera which is supposed to be good... right? Well unless im doing something wrong, it looks like crap. If anyone is moving fast it has a HUGE trail behind them. Is there something i can do to fix this issue? i have everything on max settings.

I haven't tweaked any settings and it's perfectly fine. Try deleting the Data under Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Camera > 'Clear Data'.
See if it works better that way. My playback is incredibly high quality and I don't touch any settings.
Strange I've taken quite a few vids with my Epic and never had that issue. In fact they generally turn out quite well.
do this: wave your hand infront of it and see if you can see the tracers.... thats waht im talking about... so for instance, if i record someone breakdancing or something else that they are moving fast, its ALL tracers and looks terrible. P.S. that didnt work

for real? wtf... yeah im running the eb13 ext4 with the OC kernal... so how would i go about fixing this? downgrading back to dk18?
Yeap people are downgrading back to DK18 but I like froyo too much so I will wait for the fix
Yup, I would say screw that, and just downgrade back to Froyo dk28, it's what I have and until I see some decent roms with EB13 I will probably stick with DK28 until, I was OC'd with Genocide too, but that causing my phone to freeze sporatically,.
So I say stick with a dk rom.
There is absolutely no reason to"upgrade" to eb13 until there are some good custom roms. I'm running viper trinity with genocide kernel and my phone flies with no issues whatsoever. Why would I want to"upgrade" to a stock rom with evidently lots of bugs?
I say hold off, let these great devs work their magic, and then flash a true "upgrade."

Which camera App?
I have found the camera on the Epic to be very inconsistent. Sometimes the photos look great, rivaling a good point-n-shoot. But, other times, it's just not sharp. It doesn't help that the lens sticks out and seems to get dirty just from holding the camera.
Has anyone found a better camera app?
I was able to record a basketball game...and even zoomed in all the way and out while recrding while they were running and there was absolutely NO blur. It was buttery smooth.
Infact, whenever someone watches a video on my phone, they ALL say "...wow....your phone takes really clear vids!"
Unfortunately tho, I don't see that being the case anymore if I take a video in lowlight
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It's not junk. It's the EB13 ROM causing problems. I'm still on DK28 and my cam is perfect....although a little grainy in low light.
The irony is that Samsung makes cameras, so one would think this is an area where they'd have an edge over HTC...

It's the speed of the micro SD. Get a class 6 and it wont happen anymore.
Lag on preview
Are you looking at the resultant videos, or the screen when you're taking the movies? Because during video the screen is definitely laggy. As for the motion artifacting, well, you're not going to be able to catch even moderately high speed activities with a sensor the size of the Epic's in low light. That's because it looks like the Epic doesn't adjust the ISO when it gets dark, it just increases exposure time for each frame. This keeps the images from being terribly grainy, but also makes everything look like slomo watercolors when it gets dark enough. If you want good motion capture in low light situations, you're going to have to get something with a larger sensor. Actually, I'm surprised how nice the epic's movies look. I'm the first one to criticize samsung, but they did pretty well with the limited sensor size.

EB13 Lowlight Camera solution?

Theres alot of chatter on this. This is the deal breaker for some of us so please post if there is a solution at all on any version of froyo. Some say the camera blur is on all the leaks and the final EB13. Is that true?
I just tested it...
My camera was extremely unusable just now. But yesterday, I was able to record a basketball game perfectly indoors.
This was not present in dk28.
Dk28 actually had great lowlight useability... I recorded a few videos out in the park around midnight without flash and they were easily viewable. Flash was just a plus.
But now seeing this problem I might actually go back to dk28...I realllllly don't want to, but ima need the camera to work in low light...
I thought it was just recording laggy, but the playback was exactly the same
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I wonder if anybodys tried it with the OC kernel...it could possibly make up for the lag that is present. I don't think there will be a solution here on xda anyone soon, IMHO. This all seems to be a camera driver issue as I believe samsung changed the inherent behavior of the camera.
but this is all speculation of course

You know... I thought it was just me aswell. I reflashed the samsung tool again. After a full boot up, launched camera. It was actually better but not eclair better, then I did the prl update and profile update, reboot and now its it worse! This is actualy good news. Meaning that its just a software bug.

oh yeah. I used 1.2 genocide. No help, just as blurry.
inconsistent
The camera on the Epic has been inconsistent even before upgrading to Android 2.2. Sometimes the images rival a good point-n-shoot but only when there is plenty of light. The fact that the camera sticks out and collects smudges just from holding the phone does not help.
I have had better luck playing with the ISO and other settings. Even just leaving the camera in Macro seems to produce better results.
Is there a better camera app?
I wonder if anyone's had any luck installing the eclair camera app?

I switched back to 2.1 because of it using odin. 2.2 saves video in mp4 format, 2.1 saves video in 3gp. That may have something to do with it.
Is there a way to change it t 3gp? I don't think a lot of texting 0hones can handle mp4 lol
And has anyon tried a 3rd party camera app?

I don't think a 3rd party app will make a difference as far as quality. The drivers are the issue.

I dont think do. Maybe the outcome of the video should be effected but not the live feed on the screen. I haven't tried the apk from eclair, but I have tried the dk28 on eclair. It FC.

You may have to take into account that a couple of these dk28 roms have some pretty nice enhancements and tweaks that might make the issue seem less severe.

I was running the stock DK28 rom downloaded from Google when it was first leaked and I had zero problems with the camera.
I own a pretty dimly lit store, and I took several videos in there with the phone that I posted to YouTube showing off our products, with DK28. Now with EB13, the camera is useless in the same store with the same light.
This was not a problem with DK28. It's not Froyo. It's EB13 that's the problem.

thats my fear aswell. But sprint and samsung just pulled the update from their sites. So that means they do know of these issues anf realize it has to be pulled and fixed. But comparing eclair to froyo camera performance is night and day. Pretty much useless at low light. I need low light. But I will never buy htc just because they update faster. Htc has their own awful hardware problens like under performing gpu and cpu.

Hopefully enough people alert them to the camera and graphics issues. I think right now they are only worried about peoples sd card data being randomly deleted.
Just got off phone with advanced tech support for sprint talking to them about the updates, and i said you know why im calling she said yes, I said why am i calling she said because of the low light issue and the update, I said exactly. she said and I quote " samsung is aware of the issue and the solution they have said will fix it is to do a master reset"
I for one find this irrittating as a solution. im not doing it just cuz my camera cant see low light

how u do a master reset? U mean the 768 dial code? Or odin flash?

Gingerbread so far so good

I can't seem to find one thing wrong with this rom everything for me is running perfect. No more freezing, force closing slow boot up pretty much everything that was wrong with froyo fixed. I am very please with this rom.
Anyone know if roam control still works with this ROM? I use it quite a bit to use VZW 3g since Sprints has been broken for almost a year here.

Ok. This rom is almost there but I might go back froyo tomorrow. What bothers me is the lack of gpu power. Its not ext4 and not overclock. And I get a slight lag frame per second drop in a rithmic maner. It happens all around the phones os and apps. Like tapatalk.. Flick Scroll down a thread and when u bottom out u see a stutter jerky fps drop. Not big but I see it.

I notice very little lag, if at all, on EF02. Are you on stock? marcusant's i1 has some tweaks in there to make the kernel even faster. Honestly, it's faster than some of the EXT4 OC'd ROMs I've used.
force close both in froyo and this Gingerbread sometimes.
Try using navigation for more than 15 minutes. that's the only problem I've seen so far. It shuts the gps down.

+1 on this, Loving EF02 with EF10 modem so far. I'm running it stock, rooted with the ACS EF02 CRTmod and it's solid, smooth, and is giving me the best battery life I've had so far.
Roam control works fine for me. The only issue I've had is the EF02 modem crashing, but with the EF10 modem it's been fine.
