[Q] AppWidgets fail to load on reboot - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got an issue where I'll get the "Problem loading widgets" display rather than my widgets and it doesn't go away until I remove the widget and replace it. I use three different launchers for various circumstances: LauncherPro as my main launcher, ADW.Launcher (Standalone) gets launched indirectly when the phone enters car dock mode, and QuickDesk handles the long-press home action. Somehow LauncherPro is not affected by this (although at one point it had been). It looks like the launchers are getting passed a null value for their AppWidgetProviderInfo in setAppWidget(), because I'm getting a "can't inflate defaultView because mInfo is null" warning in my logcat.
I'm running CM7 RC2 with faux's lv kernel (It's done this with several versions of CM7 and with various kernels). This issue has also survived a full wipe and clean install (including reformating /system). It's not being caried over from TitaniumBackup either; I don't restore system data, and it happens when I install new launchers too (At the time of the wipe I was using QuickDesk free, and it carried over into QuickDesk Pro).

[Q] Home Screen backup question?

I have a simple question, I'm currently on CM 7 nighty 7 and was wondering if it’s possible to back up your Home screen with all your Widgets and shortcuts with either an app or a software setting somewhere? With CM7 I normally just flash over on previous builds, but as many of you know, that sometimes problems happen for whatever reason and a full wipe is required or recommended. So with that being said, it can be a pain to have to always start from scratch on setting up your home screen shortcuts and widgets. Not sure if it matters but I have both ADW Ex and Launcher Pro, which both have backup settings but do not allow Widgets to be backup. Just trying to make it little easier if at all possible, Thanks.
Derek
It needs to be saved to the SD Card and widgets cannot be saved, which is why only the applications are able to be restored. In short, no there is no way. But even still, having all the applications atleast restored back to where you want them is a huge help.
Yes there is a way. There is an app called MyBackUp Pro. I use it to restore my homescreen. Everything is restored with the exception of the widgets. The widgets will be on the screen but "broke" so to say. I just remove the "broken" widget and replace it again.
This can be done though default ADW as you can backup and restore but as stated the widget has to be replaced. You don't need any special apps for it work normally its saved on root of your sdcard when you save it.

[Q] Says "Problem Loading Widget"

I have tried searching and have not been able to find anyone that has the problem that I seem to be having. I have an error that stays on my home screen or background that says "Problem Loading Widget". I really haven't noticed having any problems with widgets loading (at least for the ones I've used) but it doesn't matter what i do I have not been able to get this removed and it looks pretty bad. If anyone can share some advice with me or can point me to a link or something that I have over looked I would really appreciate it greatly. I have attached a picture showing the error and also one showing my phones information. If anything else is needed please let me know.
I personally use LauncherProPlus...
And this happens when you do a TB restore of LPP.
I've always been able to remove the widget with a long-press though...so that's unfortunate.
Does the launcher you're using have a backup/restore option? If you've created a backup...restore it...
If not, I'd just uninstall/reinstall and put all of your widgets back in place (a pain in the ass, I know).
That's ADW (can't tell if it's the EX version or not).
I agree, you SHOULD be able to long press it and just delete the widget. However, if you can't go into ADW settings (If this is Cm7 and the built in ADW, I think its in the regular 'Settings' menu. If ADW is install on top of something else, then you can get to it from the menu key while at home.
ADW has an option to 'Reset ADW' which will clear all data and start over.
At least ADW EX does. I haven't used stock ADW in a while, so I can only assume it has it too.

Launcher Pro + Cyanogen VS. LP + MIUI

Just my personal $.02 from having used a couple of different ROM setups in the last month or two:
It seems to me that Launcher Pro works much better with Cyanogen than with MIUI. I originally ran MIUI with LP, but ran into some problems:
- LP would freeze on startup quite often. Problem could be fixed by 'force closing' LP, or giving it a long time for bootup. But still kind of annoying
- Occasionally my LP applications pane would lose all the apps. In other words, when you went to open up your applications list, it would be empty. A hot reboot would fix this. Again, annoying.
Because of these LP issues (minor but a hassle), I stopped using LP and set up the MIUI launcher to run the way I wanted to:
- put all the apps into a couple of folders to clean things up
- used Beautiful widgets & folder organizer same as I did in LP
However, I just don't like the MIUI launcher as much:
- Only allows 4 launcher icons on the bottom of the screen
- No secondary action on icons at bottom (cannot swipe icons for secondary action)
- cannot customize icons at bottom of screen
- cannot 'loop' screens around
So, I switched to Cyanogen to get back to LP. Voila - day 2 (yes its early), and it seems to work great. no bugs with LP yet, and super fast smooth. I really like using LP, and based on that preference, I have to give it to Cyanogen. There are things I miss from MIUI (hot reboot, great toggles on drop down), but some things that are better about Cyanogen (can turn off swipe when I have the pattern lock enabled).
But overall, my personal experience is that Cyanogen and LP Plus run better together than MIUI and LP Plus.

You have a few facts wrong about miui.
1. I've had 6 icons on the bottom dock with miui
2. You can customize the icons, use theme manager.
Just wanted to make sure you're aware of these features!
Sent from my HTC Incredible
lpp is my choice.miui doesn't have 3 scrollable docks. I love the lpp widgets for easy productivity and lpp uses themes and can change icons on home if needed. I use cm7 themes from market which also makes me content for app drawer icons
Something else to note is that Widgetlocker now works very well with android 2.3.5 (presented in latest versions of MIUI and CM7)
some screenshots of it while using CM7 attached
---
Little more back on topic, MIUI is better for those who like more theming options.
CM7 isn't as great in that area, but for my tastes I've customized my phone to where I don't have any need for additional theming options since CM7 + LPP provides a pretty decent amount of ways you can customize the looks.
not a fan of miui lock but I do like agile for sense 3.0 lock for cm7
There are a ton of MIUI lockscreen themes including sense 3.0 ones, if you're into that kind of thing
Lockscreen theming is a big reason MIUI>CM7 for me, including how you can mix and match theme elements and customize basically everything.
And TheWhiteBandito is right, you can have up to six icons in the dock and you can use whatever icons you like. I'm not sure why the OP had issues with LP+MIUI, I can't personally speak to it but I know many people use alternate launchers (including LP) on MIUI without issue.
big thanks to TheWhiteBandito and k_nivesout for correcting me on the six icons & also changing the icons themselves.
There are several subtle things that work better for me with CM7 & Launcher Pro. Generally my perception is that it's faster & more stable.
Since I use the security lock pattern, the theming of the lockscreens is not so useful to me because I'd rather bypass that entirely & just use the security pattern instead of having 2 screens to go through to unlock my phone.
At any rate, it probably comes down to exactly how you use the phone & your personal preferences. But I stick with my original point - if you are a big fan of Launcher Pro, I think it works better with CM7 based on my experience with it on both ROMs.
Lastly, don't get me wrong - I think MIUI is a GREAT ROM, and I've installed it both on my phone and some of my friends phones, and I'd happily use it again.
I would tend to agree that it does come down to how you use your phone. CM7 has some advantages, and so does MIUI, just depends on your preferences and needs. It's good to see open discussion on pros and cons of roms without the "my rom is better than yours" element being part of it.
Just moved back CM7 after flashing MIUI to give it a try. It seems to be a very well built ROM, fast and stable. The one thing that did MIUI in for me was that I couldn't get swype to work. The installer couldn't license the app correctly, I attempted a few suggested solutions but ultimately gave up when I read a post on the swype website stating that it will not license. other than swype, I'd say that MIUI is one of the best ROMs that I have flashed (right up there with CM7).

MIUI is definitely a top ROM. Very unique and at this time it's pretty stable too.
When I ran MIUI, it was very stable until I'd flashed about 20 new releases without wiping caches even, (including making the transition from FroYo to GB) and I loved the themes. Then I went to CM7. WOW. I last tried it at 7.0.4, 7.1RC1 is so much faster for me than MIUI OR CM7.0.x. It aslo seems a bit more stable, and everything just works. I use GO Launcher EX, and it seems a bit faster on CM7 but I am running CM at 1GHz, MIUI I UC'd to 806 MHz

I can understand not being able to tolerate a ROM if Swype won't work. I run MIUI and have Swype running; followed the steps here:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-generate-license-for-swype-3-0-beta-on-miui-android/
..to get it working.
The only thing that I "don't like" about MIUI is that it doesn't support scrolling widgets (Pure Messenger).

[story] How I started loving my Tab even with TouchWiz + [Fix] How I fixed build.prop

After my really bad first impressions with my new GT 7.7 (read here), I made some settings, that makes this thing usable - if not a pleasure to use!! The Tab has no issues with speed within the apps, but the UI (launcher) is a real pain (I hope it gets fixed with ICS). So I thought, what makes it slow and what can I do about it? Other launchers (like ADW) are not optimized for, well, "beauty" (imho) and personally I like the look and feel of the stock launcher.
Here is how I "fixed" it:
The widgets: I removed nearly all of them and only left the icons and the weather widget from BeautifulWidgets (you can get it free (!) from getjar.com).
Live wallpaper: obviously this does not have any benefit and slows down scrolling the homescreen - normally. I tend to just use a picture wallpaper, but I found a really cool clock/date LWP that even "speeds up" the scrolling! Sounds funny, but it really has no effect on the scrolling speed of the homescreen and everything feels smooth. See the screenshots - it's nice to look at. It's called Super Clock Wallpaper by Mariux (I've attached the wallpaper too, if you like it)
Scrolling in general: like I said, TW is slow and stutters a lot. Easiest way to fix it is not to scroll! Android is cool and allows a lot of icons on the screen or to make folders. You don't have to scroll umpteen pages to get to your app. I created folders within the app drawer (see screenshot) to organize it and don't have to scroll. It's more efficient and convenient too - imo.
These settings don't fix the lagginess of TW itself, but now it's not annoying anymore and I finally start to love using my Tab!
Here is what I did to nearly "destroy" my new Tab...
I rooted my device and edited the build.prop to be able to install and try more apps. Obviously I'm very bad in this because I messed it up and my Tab couldn't boot anymore...
I used "Root Explorer" to edit the file which luckily made a backup of it. I thought I could just use adb to rename the files but I always got "permission denied" when trying su in adb shell to get root permissions and be able to rename the files on system partition. Afaik, the kernel has to support it, but the stock kernel doesn't and there are no custom kernels out there for now.
Solution: after fiddling for hours and trying all possible solutions I found on internet, I just flashed the ClockworkMod Recovery, went to "mounts and storage" menu and selected "unmount /system". After trying "adb shell" again on my computer, I finally got root permissions in shell and was able to use "mv OldFilename NewFilename" to rename the files. Pfuh...
Of course you can flash a new ROM to revive it, but everything gets lost then.
not sure about this getjar, why do you have to download to the device?
I like your live wallpaper though, using that
getjar is an alternate market, like amazon appstore. each week you get a full version of a game or app for free – legally!
You have to sideload the apps with this market.
Add the following to your build.prop and Android will try to keep the homescreens in RAM which results in much quicker response when returning to the homescreen.
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=0
Sent from my GT-P6800 using XDA App
Great hint - thanks! Will try it!
I'm running Go Launcher EX instead of TW Launcher. I also briefly tried ADW but Go seems faster. Widgets slow things down whichever launcher you use...
I've also used Titanium to freeze some usual hogs like Social Hub. It's only day two so still experimenting.
Just use ADW Launcher EX and the tab will fly.
Also freeze everything you don't use.
I've modified the LCD desity to 170 via "build.prop" file, the only downside is that the Dialer is distorted and you've to use it in landscape mode to be usable, and the mini dialer FCs.
use ADW EX and dump the stupid TW launcher.
I know ADW is faster as I bought it. But I don't like the design of it and feel is not the same as on stock launcher. Go Launcher is no beauty also and more designed for phones, not tablets...
For me, design is important to have fun using the product. That's what it's about: fun. Who really needs a tablet anyway? Of course it makes no sense if it doesn't work. But with the settings I made it's useable without annoying me until ICS hopefully fixes this thing.
So how do you sideload apps? I'm trying to install the beautiful widgets?
I've managed to install but it has a black border around the widgets, it doesn't blend into the wallpaper like yours! How did you manage that?
EDIT: Searched for .apk file and transferred it to the tablet via USB, installed from the tablet but had the non-market installation box cheked.
Played around with the options until I found the background transparency options, happy.

Custom launchers giving wierd results

A friend of mine has a stock AT&T S4 running 4.4.2 (NC1) . Whenever we load up apex or nova launcher, the menu options (from the hardbutton) including the launcher settings menu appear right justified. Furthermore, the draw apps are populated right to left and the tabs themselves run right to left. Given that this occurs on both launchers, I'm assuming it's a phone issue. It does not occur on the stock launcher and there doesn't seem to be a setting for it. Anyone encountered this problem? I have tried several searches with no result.
