Mytouch slide disassembly.

Since I could not find anything on the web about disassembly, I jumped in head first and it came apart pretty easy. The biggest mystery was trying to take the LCD housing apart because there were no screws showing. But after some investigation I noticed there is a textured tape like covering on the ends of the bottom part of the LCD housing, which is covering 4 screws! The replacement of the digitizer was pretty simple because its only attached to the housing not the display (LCD)! So this removes the worry about breaking the lcd display. I did pull a 4pin connector for the side volume control off the board ,while trying to disconnect it, so I having a tricky soldering job ahead of me.
Update: I forgot to mention about using a hair dryer to loosen the glue that holds the digitizer to the housing, this makes a much easier job of removal. Thanks: jetcitydevices, see his post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7983391&postcount=41 for more details

oh btw, be careful with the lcd if you wanna go that far. they can (and will be!) be a *****. all the ribbon wires plus the sealant on the glass is extremely fragile.

Yep I got it from a ebay store called gadgetfix and they have great customer service if you have a problem.
Also I have updated one of the pictures in the first post with info about removing the 4 pin ribben cable.

No tools were included, but all you pretty much need is jewelers screwdriver set and torx but i think the jewelers might even work for the torx screws too.

Then that guy lied, he said tools are included. I have to get a new lcd also, is there anything to swap over or is it just plug and play

My sim card slot is broken, could i replace it with the one in my G1?(Sim cant be read)

The lcd should be plug and play, looks like its just connected to the top and bottom boards.

Phone screen compatibility question
I have been searching for screens of the same size as the slides screen but with I higher pixel density and I found that samsung makes a phone "Samsung Armani B7620" that has a 3.5 in screen. I was woundering if there was a way we could take that screen and use it with the slide.

Good job! Looks good! Keep it up... I would suggest just going to your local hardware store and buying a torx screwdriver. Thats all you really need... there is a plasic tool us cell techs use. Its basically a plasic flathead screwdriver and could be replaced with a guitar pick and also a metal awl which can be replaced with an ice pick. Those are for prying snapped-in plastic housing. And yeah... I told you the lcd is pain! Lol... I havent taken apart the mts yet but have opened hundreds of phones. They can be tricky but it helps if your a tech and can reach on your store shelf and pick up a front lcd housing or a ribbon if you break one by mistake

Has there been a decent guide on taking the 4G apart yet? I've googled it but haven't been able to find anything yet.

I cant fine one either but there are 2 screws in the battery compartment and it looks like the metal portion where the camera is may pop or peel off with a little force. My guess, try to remove metal portion where camera is, if it comes off and exposes screws remove those along with 2 in bat compartment then use tool to try and separate where bezel and rubber surround are. Just fumble it.

Stupid reason really, I was going to see if the ffc could be centered better. Seems just about all of the MT4G phones have an off-centered camera, and wanted to see if I could move it back to center myself. I was just curious to see what was throwing it off.
I had the two screws off last night, but couldn't get anything to come off. Didn't want to force it and break anything, I was just hoping a teardown had been done showing what needed to be done.

I don't think a phone exists that you dont have to pry, push, pull and force things to get them apart. There will ALWAYS be risk of breaking things when taking a phone apart. I would just deal with it and not open the phone. Plus, they usually have a way to tell if you've opened your phone so you will void your warranty.

There is a "void" sticker on one of the screws. If someone does open her up, check to see if you could replace the speaker with a better one from another phone.

I'm curious to learn how to take the phone apart as well, because I'd like to figure out how to make the damn buttons stop squeaking & clicking so loudly (home/menu/back/genius). It's driving me insane and I'm already on my third MT4G.

Anyone? I'm now on my fourth MT4G and will be receiving a fifth one shortly (creaking buttons), and if I experience that same problem I'm thinking about trying to fix the damn thing myself.

damn still no tear down i need one buttons jammed

I tore one apart after I got pissed and threw it into the hardwood floor at full speed.
I don't remember the steps but I do remember there are a couple key points, including ribbons that have to be disconnected. The ribbon connector from the main display to the main board is junk and that, of all places, is where my tear down went south.
I've got 450.00 dollars sitting in pieces if anyone wants to see them.

You must never have had a MT3G. These buttons are a dream compared to the creaky clickers in that dog.

I bought a refurbished phone on Craigslist and there are fingerprints on the inside of the glass (I don't know why I never saw them when I was inspecting). Would like to teardown guide so I can go clean those prints off.

Lil bit of thread necromancy here, but did anybody ever find a teardown? I'm thinking of ripping mine open due to my backlight issue ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958033 ). I guess if nobody else has a teardown, I'll have to brave the waters and post my own, but going in blind is going to increase the risk of me killing the thing even worse than it already is

Phew. Just replaced my digitizer using the latter video. Putting it back together was fairly straight-forward by just following the video backwards, though a 'put back together' video would be convenient.
A couple minor caveats:
They skipped showing some phillips screws holding the motherboard in place (near the end). I think there were two of them. They're fairly obvious if you know to look for them.
I attempted to reuse the existing adhesive by reheating and applying pressure. This sort of worked, but the digitizer seems a tad loose. I don't think it's going to fall off, but it'd probably be better to remove the old adhesive and apply some fresh adhesive. Anyone know where to get a suitable adhesive?

Taking apart the MyTouch 4G is not that hard
I bought a used MyTouch 4G in pieces on Craigslist for $ 45 that had a broken digitizer (about $ 20 on eBay with free shipping) and LCD (about $ 40 on eBay with free shipping) and the Audio & Volume Button Flex Cable (about $ 38 on eBay with free shipping) was also defective (the power button cable was ripped which can happen very easily if you take the phone apart and if you are not 100% careful when you pry the power button cable out). I ordered all the replacement parts on eBay from US sellers.
This particular phone had the "bad", washed out screen and was manufactured in Taiwan. When I ordered the replacement LCD and digitizer, I was hoping to get the "good", bright and superior screen but that didn't happen. So for the ones out there who are hoping to improve the screen by replacing the LCD and/or digitizer, it's a 50/50 shot.
I also ran into the problem with the adhesive and found a roll of 3M 2mm double sided tape for $ 10 with free shipping on eBay. The phone is working great and looks like nothing ever happened now after I put it all back together. And even though I had to pay for a lot of replacement parts, it was still a lot cheaper than buying a new one from T-Mobile or a used one on Craigslist or eBay
There are also a lot of MyTouch 4G disassembly videos on youtube. I'm a gal and if I can do it, you can too !!

Changing exterior Housing... (Future tutorial)

Hey guys,
My HTC Evo is black, and slightly beat up.. I couldn't find a white one that was already flashed so I went ahead and got a black one. But I am pretty experienced in doing repairs/modifications on cell phones and iPods... so I figured I could give my Evo 4G a go.
So, I swung by Amazon.com and picked up the entire casing/housing for the Evo 4G in white. It has the battery cover, the back casing, and the front casing along with the power and volume buttons in beautiful white. I paid $45 after tax and shipping.
I'm expecting it to arrive on Wednesday, so yesterday I took my Evo apart to see just how it is inside, and I was surprised at how easy it comes apart and goes together...
I know you are wondering why I am blabbering here but I figured that I could post a tutorial once the part arrives, and I also wanted to know if any others have ventured into a job like this, and if so how was it for you?
Anyway, I should have a tutorial up this weekend if I can find a good enough camera to get some pictures with,

I've seen alot of ppl do the repair/replace of the screen and/or housings and it was pretty simple for them, as long as you have the right tools it should be fairly straight forward. I replaced the housing on a Treo and couldn't find a tx3 torx driver and had to cut my own out of a small screw driver using a dremel and it took more time making the driver than replacing the parts

Broke the front glass of my G2 :( -- FIXED! :)

Everything works fine (except for the camera focus, which I can live with since everything is in focus always as it is because it shoots at like f/8). What's weird is that it has survived so many other falls onto concrete, and this just happens now.
I really need to replace the glass as soon as possible. It looks pretty unprofessional cracked like this.. I am out of warranty (bought the phone in September 2010 from T-Mobile), and T-Mobile no longer has any G2s .
I've looked through a few people who have mentioned replacing their front glass, and would like to do so myself. Anyone have advice regarding how I could do this?

Okay - what would you recommend instead?

the glue that is on your phone now will sufice. when heat it up with hair dryer (be carefull if you use a heat gun) most of it will stay along the frame of your phone. just keep it warm and quickly put new digitizer back. have done it twice now with g2s and countless times with g1s and no dust has ever seeped in.
but with g1s i often replaced the casing as well. here i would use 3m double sided tape that worked very well. if you are also replacing the case or for some reason dont feel the glue is enough use this

I recommend 2mm 3M adhesive tape. I have used it for the 3 g2s I own and it holds darn well. Its less then 5 bucks on amazon and you will have quite a bit of it. Dont use glue. I always take off that old black tape.

The tape doesn't make the digitizer bulge away from the surface at all? I feel like it would. I'll give that link a buy though, just in case.

the tape he and i is refuring to is thinner than paper, i have not needed it for a g2 before but only have done 2 digitizers on these so i cant say its never necessary unless you are replacing the case as well, but its cheap to have around and may be needed

No if you stack it right I had to stack three pieces of that tape to flush it. It does not move around if you tape in the right spots. Its very thin and almost invisible.

That is weird... I did the SAME thing last week lol! I busted it on the concrete too and everything. It scratched up the bezel pretty bad too. I had insurance so I ended up getting the MT4GS (aka HTC Doubleshot). I love how speedy it is but I REALLY miss the development here and the GREAT community here in the Desire Z/G2 sub forum As far as repairing/replacing the screen (the digitizer specifically), everyone here gave great advice. I used to repair phones for a number of years and we always used a sealant very similar to double sided tape that y'all were mentioning. It basically was foaming glue that acted similar to silicon or something. I agree that about not using super glue. Bad idea. Also be careful with the ribbon wires and watch a few videos prior to disassembly. There were a few tear down threads here I'd keep handy while repairing. Good luck to ya!

Make sure you are VERY careful when removing the lcd its very fragile. I reaced my digitizer easy and was careful and lcd got mrssed up ie no pic. Ordered a new lcd and it had not brightness control always dim waiting for new replacement now. Side note once new screen comes in I will be selling this phone if anyone is interested i have 3 of them only need 2

Son of gun. The last three screws I need to remove do NOT fit with the philips head screwdriver that was recommended. Now I get to scramble around with my phone in pieces trying to find a smaller philips head screwdriver. Awesome.
They are philips head, not torque screws. I checked and triple checked.

Anyone have any idea what to do here? I can't find smaller screwdrivers anywhere. Home depot has got nada.

Go out and buy a precision screwdriver set or maybe a eye glasses repair kit. Only the first 3 screws are torx T5. Also there is 7 of them tiny ones not 3. There is 3 on either side and one more under keyboard backstop

No it's the three screws across the back at this time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=u-dR8CHEGjY#t=251s).
They are smaller than all the others and I still cannot get them out. I cannot find an eye glasses repair kit or precision screwdriver set small enough.

http://www.repairsuniverse.com sent me the screwdrivers for the Inspire 4G. Pretty sure the digitizer is for the G2 but I'll have to check the screen sizes to make sure.
Update. Fry's elecronics had a repair kit for smartphones that fit the screws. Still working on it.

if you keep watching the video you will see that when he removes the sticky keyboard backstop there are three more identical size screws mirrored from the ones you are talking about right on edge of phone, and then when you remove that piece after you remove the screws there wiil be one more (this makes number 7 ) screw of the same size tiny. Also i dont think it is metioned in the video but when you go to remove the keyboard backstop (the shiny piece under the sticky strip ) use your safe pry tool to unlock the tabs from the edge and then you must slide the piece towards the center of the phone it does not just pry off there are tiny tabs holding one side down opposite of the screws ( edge of phone ) And as far as the screwdriver for eye glasses repair, is it you cant find one or it just does not work? You should be able to find one at any walgreens or equivalent drug store or pharmacy. You could also try a hobby shop they might have something that will work. I personally use quite a big screwdriver to disassemble you just need to make sure it has a sharp point at the tip of the star ( mine is a phillips number 00 ) Believe me once you get it apart once you will be that was so easy.

HTC One Teardown (Really not that bad)

Hey Guys i recently dropped my device into some water, no biggie device still worked and everything, but it was an excuse to get a device with slightly better Bin, so i filed a insurance replacement. So i figured i had already screwed it up, why not take it apart before sending it back.....
As with probably everyone we have all seen the IFIXIT tear-down of our device and they had some issues taking it apart, and even damaging the plastic bezel on the housing. So i was intimidated, but i wanted to see if it really was that hard.....
Guys its NOT HARD AT ALL....The hardest part is the plastic on the sides is actually pretty soft, but the only damage i had was before i heated the device up i tried trying to pry the speaker cover off with just a screwdriver (bad idea). This gave me some very very slight damage where i was prying against the plastic. With the heat and then pry this wont happen. (the adhesive is ridiculous by the way, some very strong stuff (I blame 3M)
Step 1: Heat up device with a hairdryer at the bottom speaker cover, your going to need to get it pretty hot (be careful, your speaker is under that)
Step 2: With device still nice and toasty take a spreader ( i used a guitar pick, but i was thinking a hot razor blade slid under might be more effective)
Step 3: Gently work spreader under speaker cover and work from one end to the other, I used a razor blade to get a gab and then work it off, wasn't to hard since the adhesive is warm and easy to peel off the cover. (be careful, you still have to use that adhesive to put it back on, or use another adhesive)
Step 4: Once bottom speaker cover is off take your spreader and place it between the black part of the housing and the silver part (essentially the phone is placed in a aluminum shell, and you need to get it out).
Step 5: With Spreader placed between the chases gently slide from one end to the other, on the right side by the speaker cover is a white tab, slowly leverage this tab separating the black housing from the silver housing, then pry up from one side to the other tell you get a decent gap.
Step 6: Take your separator and go a side of your phone, doesn't matter which one is done first, just like the previous step, place your spreader between the black housing from the silver, and gently slide from the bottom up, if your doing it right you will hear 3 clicks and that side is separated.
Step 7: Take your spreader and repeat Step 6 on the other side until you hear three clicks.
Step 8: Take spreader back to the bottom and gently pry up pulling the black housing out of the silver Back housing, while doing this you may need another spreader to pry the bottom and then go around the sides to make sure it comes out freely.

Man, excellent photos showing us the goods. What i wanna know is that the heck causes the power button to sink in the way it does. Seems hit and miss with these. Some people get very responsive power buttons, others get mushy clicky feels. Weird.

Yes it works just fine, i have been abusing it on purpose, it has yet to screw up, I love this phone. But i have to send it in here soon lol

Here is the power button, it has a black sticker over the top, but the button is just a little piece of plastic that pushes the little button, not much contact area really.

Iiiiinteresting. I remember when the HTC One X was new, i took that think apart and bent the casing of it and ended up cracking the plastic casing. Made me sad, then i found all the parts on ebay to get it back to "mint" condition. Exciting. :good:

Yea I'm in cali and got my medical license. Smoke on!!!! Anyways. I got a gap on top speaker cover. Is it held on with adhesive?? I'm thinking about using a hair drier to heat it up and hopefully get rid of the gap.. if you can get picture of back side of top speaker grill I would greatly appreciate it. :thumbup: thank you in advance

If you have a gap, there is no need to take the phone apart.
Just get some super glue in there and clamp tight.
And here are the OEM replacement parts if you screw up

I was wondering. Is it possible to ONLY touch the body (ie the housing + speaker grills) and replace them? There are a lot of people who scratched their ones and may want to replace the outside.

In the picture, it seems you have thoroughly torn down the entire phone.
Some people may wish to simply change the speaker grills or the rear case (metal + plastic sides). On a scale of 1-10, how hard would that be?
