I finally reached 5GB on my T-mobile data plan, I often do not even go over 3 gb. I watched about two dozens of tv episodes due to the lack of assignments The cap lowers the speed to about 7 kilobytes per second and is fast enough for web chating, browsing and email syncyng. What are your thoughts about this?

The cap really does suck. They shouldn't name the plan unlimited because I know of many people who didn't know about the cap and found out the hard way. I'm glad Sprint is true unlimited.
What!!! So 'unlimited' is actually 5gb??

Yes. It has been since Nov. 2011. Before that it was 10GB per month. Once you go over you are sent a text and throttled to between 7kbps to 56kbps. T-mobile continues to argue that it's unlimited because you can still access the web. (Although, at those speeds it's pretty much unusable.

*****sad but true********
"Verizon Wireless will join AT&T in adopting data caps soon, probably in mid-summer, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said at an investor's conference Tuesday.
The precise timing for the move to a tiered-pricing scheme has not been announced, however. AT&T put an end to unlimited data plans for new customers last year.
Verizon has been offering the iPhone 4 since Feb. 10 with a $30 unlimited plan, which applies to other smartphones it sells that run on the Verizon CDMA/EV-DO network.
Shammo said some of the details of the data caps and tiered pricing will come when Verizon launches the HTCThunderbolt on LTE soon. Thunderbolt will have a 4.3-in. screen and run Android, Verizon said in January."
here is the link to the story http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9212378/Verizon_data_caps_coming_probably
I don't agree with the cap itself; I don't like how they call it unlimited but cap it at 5 gigs, but I can understand why they do this. Think about it; if an exponential number of people just jump on the network or switch over to the unlimited plan and just use gigs of data, where can they draw the line and tell you to stop?
It isn't like they "want" to cap it so much, but if they don't people are inevitably going to use Tmobile as their main internet connection, for the most part (browsing, downloading, everything except for pirating movies) IMO.

I was kinda irritated the first time I heard about this. At first, there was no problem, at 10 gigs. Unlimited or not, 10 gigs a month was a fair deal. The data cap dropped to 5 around the same time CM7 nightlies came out, and absolutely pissed me off. I had no actual notification of the change, so I ended up reaching the data cap at the BEGINNING of the month. Absolute malarkey I say. My data, being that I live on an island in the pacific, is already slow by ANY standards. Slower data speeds and a lowered data cap. It was not a good day to be a tmobile owner.

I got capped the 1st month I got my phone. I knew about the cap but I didn't think it was thatttt badddd. I now use the 3g watchdog app to remind and I use wifi whenever I can.

Limited "unlimited"
I ran into my 30 bucks worth last month, around the 17th. It want a great day, in fact I wasn't even using it at the time. I am running android on my hd2 and found the netflix app an awesome addition. Instead of listening to the radio, I steamed every episode of ancient aliens for about a week. Let me tell you, when you hit the wall, its over, you are lucky if your emails come through. Worse yet, there is nothing they can do, they say, not even the ceo has a button to start your data over again. What I did in the end was upgrade my plan, they credited me for the 10g plan $30, them I called back and switched my plan back to the original. I got my data restarted in the end, but a day of heartache when you use your phone for work as well.
I think they should have to call it what it is, limited, tiered, what have you, even if you never went over 10g it is still limited!
The cap doesn't bother me, I just use wifi religiously.
Now they have changed it. 10 gb option is available
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
I used to use wifi all the time & rarely used more than 500MB per month (300MB was about normal). Since they started capping, I just turned off the wifi until I hit 4GB and use TMO data instead. Once I hit 4GB, I go back to wifi whenever I can to make sure I don't hit their limit.
If they're going to cap my unlimited plan, I'll use it as much as possible without causing an inconvenience for myself. Way to go TMO, you've now caused me to use around 10 times more data than I did previously!
I agree with this post, and I user wifi whenever its available...however I still check my data usage constantly.
Theres a work around now that I found...some files you load into your phone, but haven't tried it.
My house has more wifi coverage than more corporate offices lol / I make wimax look like a bleep on the radar - and theres lots of programs on the market for mapping of open wifi,.the names just escape me.
Look at it this way...tmo will be taken over by the evil att monster and I'm not happy about that, I hate att, however we will then get free access to their wifi all over...so maybe that'll ease your minds...
My personal thoughts however are they should be sued for misrepresenting their product but they all do it with the exception of sprint and criket...which runs on sprint lol _ unlimited means unlimited, not unlimited broadband for X amount of data then kick you down to dial up/old school isdn speeds.

Here in germany capped data plans are quite usual (for mobile internet).
My plan contains only 500 MB for 20 Euro (?close to 25USD?). But using WiFi at home, the university and my friends places doesn't cause any problems for me.
During the last month I consumed about 200 MB while travelling/on the go and about 6 GB over WiFi. With a quite capable SGS2 ;-)
But I don't watch many movies on my phone, and if I do, I put them on the internal storage (after... uhm... ripping them from DVD )
Though I can understand the companies limiting the plans: If most users use mobile internet even if WiFi is available it causes a lot of traffic over a very expensive infrastructure, so they try to limit the use of their wireless links.
And just causing as much traffic as possible "because you paid for it" doesn't make it any better.
The general idea behind such an "unlimited" plan is fair use, and because some people tend to overstress that fair use they have to put the limit in place.
Obviously, if your phone is your only internet access than my argument doesn't hold, but than you have some money to spare for a bigger plan

it's 10gb not 10mb. and that's a reasonable limit before throttling. there are other threads on this as well.
Does this count for downloading 10mb apps and stuff? I have not been throttled down and thought this was only a myth...10gb is a lot to go through a month for me anyway though

this has been discussed thoroughly in other threads....
but, basically, you are still receiving the product (unlimited web access, which is the same cost even if there isn't 3g in your area), just at a slower speed. a lot of cable and dsl companies do the same thing and their networks aren't as impacted by heavy bandwidth usage.
The dumb part is 10gig's isn't much anymore, some apps/games download 80-100 megs worth of stuff.
Not only that but last I checked the Samsung Vibrant comes with mobile TV app does it not?
So whats the point of having apps that are going to eat up data, are only good when they have 3g and we only have 10gigs or use or that?
It makes me sick every time I see ATT's dumb as use our internet commercial and don't state it's a 250 meg and 2.5 gig plans.
Tmobile isn't very far from being in the same boat because they give you a phone with mobitv and advertise the screen and playing movies and then expect you to not use it (and the data cell line to it) to stream videos/movies/shows?
Same thing for Win7, etc..
ALL these phones now are capable of pulling 100's of gigs of data in a month, yet they want us to accept a neutered phone with only 10 gigs of worthy access at descent speeds.
And no edge isn't worthy, might as well not have a data connection for anything other than checking email or getting tweets because it's way to slow.
So either go back to selling just dumb phones, or they need to expect people to be using more data.
I just don't see the point in living in this internet data based world and having all these damn cell phone companies refuse to allow us to enjoy it by not offering a true unlimited internet 3g connection to our phones.
And it's not the data pipe, or the usage thats a bull**** argument because the following companies offer unlimited internet through cell towers for laptops/home computers verizon/virgin mobile/sprint and sprint offers unlimited 3g to their 4g phones.
So no it's not about them "coping" with us the evil eaters of all the bandwith. If that was the case nobody, not one company could offer true unlimited 3g/4g but it is out there just not for the vast majority of the companies/options and you have zero options if you are GSM only like me which sucks.
I think 10gb is very far considering at&t gives you 2gb for 25 and then charges you more if you go over that

Yes and I could offer to chop off only a pinky instead of your whole hand so thats better as well right?
Don't think so, if the cell companies want to make use of the airwaves that are limited, they should be forced to offer a unlimited internet package on all their services.
Same for home phone companies, if they want to offer phone service they need to offer dsl to all their customers, and have a unlimited package.
It's just tiring to see commercial after commercial showing this and that on the internet and you have to go to virgin mobile to be able to get unlimited 3g for a home connection. And they only charge me 10 bucks more than the cost for the internet on my phone.
So no I don't think it's to unreasonable to ask for unlimited 3g on my vibrant when you consider I pay about 80 bucks a month, and I use about less than 1 hour of talk time, only a few hundred text so the only real thing they are providing me in quantity for 80 bucks is internet and they can't even do that "right".
Honestly it hardly effects me because I don't have 3g where I live, but I do travel to 3g areas so I don't want to have that slow down.
I got a message telling me my connection was throttled as well. Problem is I haven't been using my phone. I checked my usage on the t-mobile website and it claimed my phone used a gigabyte while I was sleeping. At various points my phone seems to do a few hundred megabytes at random. This has been happening the last few days, which corresponds to the time that the gmail application stopped syncing on my phone. Is this a common problem?
Virgin Mobile/Sprint is giving unlimited 3G away for a few reasons
- Subscriber additions
- Underused EV-DO network (soon to be overloaded with unlimited usage+Evo/Epic; it's already happening) There isn't enough bandwidth to go around. Two people streaming YouTube constantly is enough to bring your overall data through put below 1Mbps where it was probably 2Mbps before.
- Subscriber additions, Sprint is hurting for them.
Very well spoken thats been my whole point to start with

Maybe they're throttling the speed, but have you changed roms recently or anything special. You can always call your provider to ask them about the speed.
From what i hear, their unlimited data is capped to 1gb?.... the is what kept me from switching lol.
From what i hear is it is indeed unlimitied data. I think the Simple Mobile $60 plan used to be for 1GB of data but recently got changed to unlimited data.
The current plan is indeed unlimited but if you are caught deviating from the terms of use (i.e tethering, downloading torrents and files from peer to peer) they will either restrict your data or disconnect it.
If you use the data for your phone it is truly unlimited.
You should check with their customer care, I work for T-Mobile and I remember reading something about how they can add a throttle feature and you have to call to have it removed. It won't drop off when the bill cycle switches.

I too am in the same boat, I did change ROM, and suddenly my data got very slow. I called simple mobile to check if I was getting throttled or anything, they told me I was not getting throttled.
It's puzzling me what might be the reason for this, is this because I changed a ROM?
i called them and complained about slow data speed, agent just "rebooted" my account and speed went back

My phone gets "Throttled down" around the 15th as I go over 5gig worth of data...and paying 39.99 for Unlimited Data...WTF?!
I am facing the same issue on Simplemobile. I do some (light weight) tethering to browse my emails etc.
Suddenly last week (Mar 15, 2011) my phone internet speed reduced drastically. Most webpages pages started timing out. Internet basically becomes unusable.
I am start of my billing cycle and have only used 200MB of data. I have never exceeded 1GB in a month.
The only reason I moved to simpleMobile was so that I could use the 'unlimited' data plan.
What to do now? I guess time to move on to other more welcoming providers ?
I was trying to see how much data i could use up before simple mobile decided to throttle down or interrupt my data services so I started watching a lot videos on youtube, movies and i even did some light tethering. So a couple days ago after I hit the 2GB mark my internet slowed down to a crawl.
I still have the H icon but the internet is very slow, I've called them 4 times; they have restarted my data services more than once but it's still slow so today they just created a ticket with their technical support team and the rep said they'd call me withing a couple of days. So let's just wait and see.
Using speedtest.net app, I'm seeing between 1.50mbps-2.70mbps SOMEtimes in the 3.00mbps range. Most I've gotten since I rooted was 3.96mbps and upload is usually always around 1.30mbps. Is this normal for 3G? I don't remember what my results were pre root, but I think I was getting at least 5mbps download. Also I updated to the latest froyo 7.15 blah blah radio, and I see no difference. Supposedly your supposed to get better service and faster 3G. That's not the case for me. Seems the same as always. I'm not using simple im using tmobile us epc.tmobile.com since it was checked on default
Same here. As soon as I hit 2 gb my speed went down. I was listening Pandora, watching YOUTUBE, now I have to wait 2-3 minutes for just for google search page to load! It is complete BS - UNLIMITED, dah?!! Let's all of us who experience problems just file BBB complains under FALSE advertising.
I flashed back to the older radio that the stock slide uses. I get better speeds on it.

I checked my account and saw that I had used just over 2gb worth of data. I began the plan (firs time doing unlimited, had just bought an android and killed H2o's(at the time) 50mb limit in 2 days) on the 9th of this month (18 days ago) and was absolutely thrilled at my new Android + Simple experience.
I rooted a G1 I bought and will admit I tethered. I enjoyed bragging about my Android feeding my Chumby, netbook and my girlfriends Phone and how "I *WAS* the internet". This seriously damaged my droid ego.
It was the first month having it and I did do some pretty heavy compared to what I would normally do downloading so I think I can get by on the measly 2gb of bandwidth you get but I don't want to get stuck at the slow speed I've heard mentioned before.
Am I doomed? If it's like this I'd rather go with H2o's 50 plan since it has better coverage and the picture messages are unlimited, not taken out of the 100mb bandwidth. IF it's an unwritten rule not to go over 2gb I can deal, 3 would be friggin perfect though.
Simple Mobile New 2G "unlimited" plan
Have been using Simple Mob for a while with their $60 plan, in June I went abroad, and since they do not have roaming, decided to move to the $50 plan. Now I’m back, and while away they changed the $50 plan from 100 Mb to “2G unlimited”….that is just insane. 2G might be good enough for IM, chatting, and nothing else, and doing that you will never go beyond 100MB, unless you have the patience to wait forever for pictures lo download when surfing any web site.
Now I’m stuck until my new cycle, which will start in 20 days!!! I have called to complain, and they aren’t willing to do anything. At least they should refund me $10 since I can’t use their lousy 2G, and that’s what costs to have Voice + Text, well that didn’t work either.
Arguments were: “we are trying to give our customers the best value for their money….and if you have an AT&T phone you can’t get 3G, so that’s why we created this plan”….. Well that wasn’t a creation, that was an unfair modification, IMO. Very disappointed, with their lack of willingness to help.

What there not telling you (prob because they have no clue) is that the 2g plan falls under the "throttled" profiles on the epc apn (slotted throttling to hold you near 50kbps)
edge @ ~<300kbps is technically 2.5g tech (to simple that is)... cs and pr forget to mention that
wow what the hell???????? i have a sidekick 4g rooted and on custom rom gingerbread clone v2 and my speedtest is download: 0.12mbps upload: 0.14mbps... thats bull... everytime i try to watch youtube off wifi on my data it lags and freezes all the time.. it takes like 10mins to watch a 2 min video... is there a way to fix that????
Possible reason for slow data speeds on Simple Mobile
Seems like this is an older thread but on the same topic that has yet to have an answer or solution.
Since I've come into the same problem, I thought I would repost what I found out today on this topic.
Finally spoke to someone at Simple Mobile tech support that was able to tell me something that makes sense. At least in my case and it may be the issue for others as well.
I switched my SIM from a Verizon Motorola Droid 2 Global, that only supports EDGE / 2G connection to a Tmobile Sidekick 4G. Which is considered a Samsung Galaxy S 4G.
Well the problem is that it connects at 4G and since I am on the $40, when it does try to connect to the towers I am not authorized for 4G, so it automatically throttles me to 119..
He suggested I toggle 4G off and connect 3G and I should get full speeds... My problem now is that this phone doesn't have an option or toggle, that I know of to test.
Perhaps someone else that knows how to toggle a SK4G could give me a hint or someone could put this to the test on their, it would help the rest of us resolve this mystery.

So I've had my SGS III on tmobile about two weeks (Bought 6/28) And I've already hit my data cap at 5.2gb with 2gb from Play Music alone.
I just got off the phone with retentions and they told me 2 things:
1. ETF is $200 (so I could theoretically sell the phone here or on ebay for $300-600, or I still have 3 days to return the phone to walmart.)
2. There's nothing they can do for me, aside from charge me full price for the $65/mo 10gb "unlimited" data. I could not get the $10 off for 24 months either. I pay $108/mo after fees for unltd. everything. (Ha ha!)
So, Sprint users, how is your data? I'm seriously considering dumping tmobile this week for sprint, I can't do this throttling BS for two years.
And Tmo users, have *you* hit your cap yet? how quickly?
I've only hit my cap once with my 5 gig data plan since I switched over to T-Mobile from Sprint last year. I had Sprint for 4 years and boy does their data speeds suck. Yeah their data speed may be unlimited but you'll be stuck with dial up connections compared to to T-Mobiles hspa

I download apps, play online games, watch YouTube, surf the net, etc.. 2GB a month works well for me. So obviously if you use that much data it's on you and not on them. Upgrade to the highest plan and quit complaining.
No one's fault but your own, sorry.

Seriously, it's like you think you're entitled to unlimited. You chose T-Mobile over anyone else, and chose their 5GB plan. Why are you so surprised that you'd have to pay more for more unthrottled data?
Cool story bro!

How can you even use 2 gigs from Play Music in two weeks?!? Are you using it 24/7?
Hahaha!!!!!!!! Go to verizon lol they will sell you all the high speed you need. I just switched from Verizon to tmobile. Verizon charges $60/ month for 1gb and tmobile charges $25/month for 5gb.
I couldn't be happier. If you need to stream that much use fm radio or wifi or.. Pay more money.

OP,
Why aren't you using wifi for large items?
I averaged 2GB data & 5GB wifi /mo on TMO....and that 2GB was surfing whenever I wanted and streaming pandora/google music for hours everyday..
Okay, then switch to sprint.. there's nothing we can do here..

I'd say switch to sprint and hop on their unlimited. Lots of people complain about slow speeds (which compared to other carriers they are) but I 've never had a problem streaming Netflix and other videos while tethering and hopefully their quick with the lte rollout. I've been with sprint 11yrs and never had a problem
You may want to consider a bigger microsd card if you are streaming so much data. As far as speeds go, it all depends on market. Ask around at work and see if anyone has sprint, if they do, see if they will do a speed test for you. I know for a fact that in my area, sprint has the worst 3g out of any of the big 4. When i had them i averaged less than 100kb down. I've also seen people hit 1.5 mbps in other areas on a regular basis. YMMV.

Yeah, after I realized that I'd lose the "4G" with the one on t-mobile waiting for sprint to roll out LTE in orlando, I think the best way to do this is trim down my music library and keep it on an SD, and just use play music to push new songs
I'm just frustrated that t-mobile calls it unlimited at all. It's a lie in itself because the service is limited in one way or another, it's not fair to still call it unlimited just because it's not limited in the way it usually is.
sprint................suckkkksssssss! Had the service for 4 days and it was painful with roaming, pathetic speeds. Tmobile is insane in my area with their 3g+ I get consistent 15mbs down and 3mbs up. learn to find wifi and use it. wifi is our friend.

But they don't call it unlimited 4G access anywhere I've seen. They call it, quite clearly, unlimited data with xGB of high speed data. And they deliver exactly on that promise.

++++1 On this. I consider myself an average to moderate user when it comes to data. I use the WIFI only at my house, and I have a 5 GB data plan. I have yet to pass 2GB of usage since switching from Sprint 3 months ago. On another note, I average 17MB down and 3MB up in my area, which is faster than my own internet service provider, and on Sprint I would average around 700KB down and 300KB up. Good luck switching to Sprint.

Your frustrated...uh huh..sorry but I'm frustrated reading this post...They call it unlimited 2 gb, 5 gb.. there's a reason for the number after the unlimited, also read the fine print it says they throttle your speeds... In the future you should really try to read the fine print and ask questions like why is the unlimited 2gb cheaper then the unlimited 5 gb... Make sure YOU don't make the same mistake again in when you actually buy something important with financing like a car or house...
Op I say check in your area and see if sprint has good coverage and good network speed in your area before making any moves. I live in Miami and still have my e4gt since I rely on wimax and it isn't a big upgrade difference with the s3, here's some speed test I took a few days ago using wimax

I rather get an average of 9-11mbps and highs 13-14mbps on a good day and have unlimited then to have 20-60mbps and have a data cap but that's just me lol, the speeds I get now is good enough to browse, play hd YouTube videos with no problem, and tether with good speeds too.

The subject kinda says it all. I'm one of the lucky ones that got grandfathered in on big red's unlimited data plan.
My wife has been on at&t and she's tired of it. Her phone (Atrix 4G) is falling apart and she isn't thrilled with the phone offerings from at&t.
She loves the Razr M so I've been looking to get her added to my account. It would also save us about $30 per month for her not to be on at&t separately.
A few months ago it was still possible to add an individual line to an existing account, without affecting the primary account.
Now they force me to convert my primary line over to a share-all-your-money plan, which will mean I lose my unlimited data.
The thing is, I use, on average, about 2.5G of data. I'm not a heavy user and I know that. My wife isn't either so we could make due with 4GB.
So, I need some thoughts.
1) Keep my unlimited and sign my wife up for her own individual big red plan? (no savings per month, but happy wife)
2) Convert over to a shared data plan, and add line for wife. ($30/mo savings)
So, it comes down to this: is having unlimited data you don't really use worth the $30 in added cost?
One side of my brain says no, the other says yes.
I have been battling that same question. My answer was keep my unlimited data as long as I can. Why? With more and more things going towards the cloud my data usage is sure to go up in the future. So I'm thinking for then and not now. I don't think Verizon is doing this because the masses asked to share data as they would have us believe. Verizon seen data usage dramatically increasing in the future as well and is trying to get us to switch now when our usage is low. Now is when they can convince us we don't use much data.
Sent from my XT926
I was grand-fathered into unlimited data for a while, but then I started tracking my actual data usage and it was only about 1.5-2.0GB per month so I just switched over. The only time now where I would maybe want it back, is if I was using 4G has my home Internet connection and just using my phone as a mobile hotspot. I don't feel that would be reliable enough so I'm fine with it.
I have a feeling sooner or later Verizon will come up with some way to get those who are still on unlimited data and won't sign a new contract.
I would just get her a verizon pay as you go plan. Decent phones. Give your wife your phone and then make twelve monthly payments on yours?
I am almost certain if you keep calling back eventually you'll get someone to transfer you that can help. You can probably find a rep to finagle 29.99 4GB...

THe only reason to a share plan is to get subsidized phone.
I have resigned myself to keep unlimited until they kick me off. I'll buy my phone retail if I have to.
If they kick me off I'll switch to Sprint.
Keep unlimited at all costs.
We use a combined 11-13GB on three lines.
I kind of split the difference. I stayed on the old voice plan but was able to get a subsidized phone upgrade by losing my unlimited data. I instead got a 5GB data plan and dropped unlimited texting and switched completely over the Google Voice (which I had been meaning to do). So I pay the same as a 2GB share everything plan but with 400 minutes of voice (not a problem for me) and 5 GB of data... I only ever use up till 3 GB so I have been considering lowering to 3 or 4GB and just paying the $10/GB overage on months that I go over.
So there is some room for negotiations when you talk to the tele sales folks. That's good to know!
-- Android: It's a UNIX thing. You wouldn't understand.
Keep it no matter what. NO MATTER WHAT. Even if you don't use the unlimited, you could sell it to a friend (someone trustworthy) who has a crappy home internet connection, and turn a hefty profit. Just give them the activated SIM card and they can put it in a mobile hotspot and easily beat ADSL speeds for less money and better reliability.
Seriously, you guys are making a huge mistake by giving up one of the last reasonable cellular data plans in North America; nay, the entire world.
Don't do it. Keep your unlimited. Set up a new account for a new phone if you have to. Pay retail on new phones if you have to. Sell your activated SIM to someone you trust who'll use the data for a huge profit. Do anything EXCEPT willingly give in to The Man and the fascist data plan, oops I mean the shared data plan.

Howard forums has people wanting to do assumption of liabilities. Now I've never heard of someone selling their unlimited plan but that's only because most people that go the aol route are in contract, need out, and find people that really need unlimited.
I would not be advising someone to use the sim solely for home Internet. Yes it's unlimited but some use hundreds of gigs of data. This isn't good for others. You could also get caught.
The only reason I'm keeping my unlimited plan is because we have 2 smartphones and 3 feature phones. Always transfer upgrades to the feature phones and transfer new phone back. Why waste upgrade when feature phones are super cheap retail?

Few things:
1. You can consistently use between 50 and 75 GB per month and not get in trouble. Believe it or not there are people who use more than that and haven't been threatened with disconnection. But yes, if you download at 100% line capacity 24/7 you will get disconnected. Even 50 GB can be downloaded in an extremely short time (about 1 to 2 days depending on your LTE signal), leaving a lot of room for other users on the network.
2. Verizon is contractually prohibited by the FCC, which allows them to operate the licensed 700 MHz spectrum, from discriminating against a user because of that user's choice of device, which means you can either tether a smartphone or use a mobile hotspot, or even a USB modem, and they can't do anything against you based solely on your choice of device or they risk losing their operating license.
3. All of Verizon's towers will throttle your LTE speed down to a lower level (faster than 3G, but way slower than your LTE is capable of) if they identify you as a heavy data user AND the tower is 100% utilized. So they minimize data hogs' impact on other users by slowing them down when the tower is busy. Light or Occasional data users will be able to use the tower at full LTE speeds. When the tower isn't busy, well, why do you care if unlimited users are just using up spare capacity? That doesn't hurt anyone at all, and doesn't cost Verizon a penny, since all their back haul and peering is unmetered, so if they aren't 100% utilizing it they are actually paying for capacity that isn't being used, which is a waste.
I'm lucky that the tower closest to me at home is ALWAYS extremely under-utilized. I get fantastic speeds and no throttling, ever, at home. In the city I have seen close to 3G speeds on the LTE network due to saturation, which I am fine with. I still benefit from LTE's improved reliability and ping compared to 3G, so even if it's not 20 Mbps, I'm happy to have what I'm allowed. Verizon keeps me on a pretty long leash.
And no, I don't make the network worse for everyone else by using 70GB on an underutilized tower. 70GB over a month is not even a drop in a bucket to Verizon's back end infrastructure. I know some FiOS users who run multiple terabytes per month.

I love my unlimited data and I'm definitely gonna keep it. If i like a new phone that comes out, ill just pay full price for it. I canceled my internet and cable at home because I have access to both thru my phone. I average around 150gigs a month and haven't seen a decrease in speed.

I seem to have struck a nerve with someone and that was not my intention. You are probably used to having countless people advocating for verizon and following their rules. I am not one of them.
I was not aware that such policies were in place to protect the consumers. This is good to hear. I was under the impression that 4G devices weren't throttled (for the most part), even when on 3g and that only 3g devices were being throttled after heavy use. Verizon has obviously updated their guidelines so I need to read up on it.
I could not limit my home internet consumption to only 50 gigs. What is an average use anyway? I'm generally under 200 gigs. I am in areas where 4G is new and isn't that fast (under 10mbps, 3g tops off at 0.75) or in a big city where it's over utilized. I pay $20 a month for 50 mbps cable internet and that is a luxury many do not have.
Let's face it. We are lucky to have this unlimited plan. There are no guarantees on how much longer it will last. Just keep it, please?

I switched from Sprint Unlimited to Verizon "share-all-of-your-money" (that's about right) plan. I had a real hard time letting go, but my wife and I have been on for 2 months now and it hasn't been a problem. We went with 4GB, and I initially thought it would be a problem, but we haven't even come close to 2GB yet. I mitigate that a lot by using WiFi as much as possible. Especially when I'm home, but also at work. I've also become a lot less bashful about asking for their WiFi password. What's the worst that could happen? They just say no. Many of them don't care though and don't give it a second thought. I also make the conscious decision to wait until I'm home to watch that YouTube video or what have you everyone one is clamoring about. I also used to tether my laptop to my phone and used that as my primary internet connection. Haven't needed to do that, so data consumption has gotten a lot less.
I haven't found it that difficult to live with a 4GB cap.

And what happens when Sprint cuts off unlimited? I agree with the idea of voting with your wallet but in this case, I feel there needs to be an exception. Given the financial standing of Sprint atm, I can't see why any one would risk jumping to them. Plus if enough people follow suit like you, it is bound to bog down Sprint's network until they start to cap data plans to.

They claim "unlimited forever".
What financial standing, they just got bought by SoftBank Mobile (Japanese).
They are building out their network and adding more LTE from their old iDEN spectrum, that and they bought Clearwire.
When Verizon makes me move from unlimited, I'll be jumping to Sprint.

There is an old saying. Talk is cheap. I seriously doubt they will retain unlimited forever. I would ask for a contract and read that thing over and over and over again as I would not be surprised to see some sort of clause in there that they have the right to terminate the unlimited data at any time because they get greedy like ATT and VZW.
Finance wise, you're right. I forgot about the buy outs. They are in a much better position financially and network wise, but they are still in the early roll out stages making it to early to judge just how well the network upgrade will be in the end. I also haven't heard how involved SoftBank has been so far. Have they only put up the money while still letting the former Sprint execs run the company for the most part?
My wife and I both gave up our unlimited data. She gave up hers to upgrade and I just gave mine up to save money. We have 3 smart phones sharing 4GB. I was using more than 10GB every month myself on unlimited. But a little prudence and control and we have no problem. In fact our month is over next week and we haven't even used 2GB between three phones.

I'd say to just do the math of what saves you more of the course of 2 yrs. If its cheaper in the long run by a significant amount to switch to the new plan and get a subsidized phone, and you can't foresee needing unlimited data, it just makes sense to switch. I personally am planning on keeping my unlimited plan while buying phones at full price due to highly fluctuating data usage.

Not sure if anyone noticed but Verizon announced yesterday it was bringing back unlimited data! I was on the 24 GB plan with 10 devices. The VZ web site is basically down when you try and upgrade so I spent 2 hours on hold. When I finally got someone they compared what I pay now with what it would cost to go to unlimited. My cost went DOWN 30 bucks a month to go to unlimited. They can throttle you after 22 GB but only if there is heavy network congestion. I think this is the same thing T-Mobile and AT&T too. This new plan also provides 10 GB of hotspot use. I signed up just now.

Yeah this was all over Internet. Bad news: you can't use corporate discount. I am better off on their short lived 12 GB plan+2 extra GB wth rollover as it is cheaper wth corporate discount. Many months I have 20+ GB which is more than enough for me.

Just read up on this. Not a huge fan of Verizon but some things seem a little off to me about this plan.
"Everything included in Verizon Unlimited:
Unlimited talk, text and data.
If a line uses 22GB of data in a billing cycle, Verizon can throttle that line within the rest of the cycle should it attach to a congested network location.
10GB per month per line of 4G LTE tethering; drops to 3G after first 10GB.
Unlimited calls and text to Mexico and Canada.
Unlimited talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada. Only first 500MB of data at 4G LTE speeds; 2G afterwards.
“Full-quality HD video,” which Verizon says comes at you the way the partner sends it. It’s not throttled to 480p like T-Mobile and Sprint do. Technically, that should mean you get 4K streams, 1080p streams, and whatever else is sent to you from a partner (the app you are streaming from). There isn’t a toggle on or off – you just get HD and above streams if the partner is sending that level of stream."
Source: http://www.droid-life.com/2017/02/12/verizon-unlimited-plan-faq-pricing-availability/
I've highlighted two bullets there for a very specific reason. In my experience, the unlimited plans are great for people that are constantly scrolling their way through Facebook and Instagram and can't stay off Snapchat. Additionally (and perhaps more importantly), these plans are useful for people that like to stream videos and shows when WiFi isn't available to them. The fact that these videos are streamed to your device in the highest quality the connection can achieve is actually a problem. This is because you only get 10GB of 4G LTE data a month, afterwards it's throttled to 3G. This means that watching videos will use up your 10GB in a flash and then you'll be stuck with mediocre speeds.
For comparison, the equivalent T-Mobile plan gives you 26 GBs of unthrottled data for $10 less, after which you have the chance of being throttled. The only drawback being that all of the video content you watch is in 460p or less. Either way, it's kind of cool to see Verizon bringing this plan back. Competition is usually good for consumers.
EDIT: jk, this is wrong lol

The only thing that is getting throttled is your tethering (hotspot) after 10gigs ..
As far as streaming movies and TV shows from your phone, you can do that as much as you want. And you won't notice and slowdown unless there is heavy network congestion AND you've used over 22gig already.
Nothing off or weird about this at all.

Lol not a problem. Just didn't want any misinformation about the new plan being thrown around, because in some regards, this could be better than T-Mobile's plan.
TMobile is upping there game now! Gotta love competition...

Inapplicable corporate discount is what's keeping me from upgrading to this plan. I get 21% off. That's a significant amount.
I wonder what the core differences are between the old Unlimited data plan that costs $50 now vs this new one. I know they both will have the 22GB "soft cap" as that has been a thing for quite some time now. Since I'm sure quite a few of us tether without the extra monthly charge I wonder if we were to switch over and they provision our line, Verizon would be able to detect this? If that is the case 10GB being tethered will go fast especially when you're watching videos. I tether my devices a lot at work to listen music and watch YouTube and I can exceed that quite quickly. I'm wondering with the new plan with custom software on our devices if they would be able to detect the tethering activity or not. Looking forward to seeing people's thoughts on this . I'd save $8/month switching to the new plan even w/ my 21% discount not applying.
I get veterans discount so I'm really debating about doing this. I wonder since I have the bypass that the tethering would still get bypassed so instead of the 10gb it would be on the mobile side data.

Just switched to new unlimited. saving me like $24

Can you tell me please when you tether does it show your 10GB allotment being used on your Verizon page?

I guess it would be a messy bill if you did make the change to go into effect immediately. Verizon and their prorations and month in advance billing.
Yup it would have been 213 or some crap
I switched immediately. Dropped my bill by about 20 or so.
won't save me any money with them taking away the corporate discount. It would cost me 45 more. I rarely use more than 2 GB a month, always on wifi (at work, home, wherever xfinity has a hotspot). I am on the 12GB plan and have 2 GB of bonus data from getting my pixel xl.

The old plan doesn't have a throttle cap at all.
I lost my 20% Corporate discount but I kept running out of data with a week left in my cycle and I had the 30 GB plan. I have 6 phones and one tablet on my account. This new plan winds up costing about the same as the old plan with the 20% discount but I'll get more data as one phone rarely uses the bulk of our data. It's 4 of the 6. Even if they do throttle at 22 GB per line, that would be 88 GB in total on the 4 lines that use a lot of data.
It's not perfect, but it suits my needs better.
I have the old UDP with no cap use 200gb monthly never throttled and there's a loophole for the $29.99 pricing for UDP

Right now I am on 12 Gigs +6 Gigs Bonus Data. When I switch my bill goes up quite a bit. And I never use more than 10 gigs in a month. Not sure this is for me.

Inapplicable corporate discount is what's keeping me from upgrading to this plan. I get 21% off. That's a significant amount.

Yep, that was the other thing... No Corp Discount and must Auto pay on Checking Acount or a Debit Card... No credit cards allowed for auto pay on this program. :crying:

I am also a veteran... But I get a better discount with my employer. Did they let you apply veteran discount?
