This has pissed me off since day one, but i never thought anything about it. When you guys hook your xoom up to your pc do you see all the folders in the "sdcard"? Like i don't see any folder that starts with a period. I'm also missing a lot of sub-folders. Is this what everyone is seeing or is my just stupid???
Did you enable to show hidden and system folders in Windows? To my knowledge the leading dot signalizes a hidden file.

Yea, thanks tho. I see everything on my evo sdcard, so you see them on the xoom?

Honestly, I don't know since I never needed them. I will check at home.
No, you don't. I believe it's because of the way El Goog chose to implement USB in Honeycomb. Compare the way your EVO mounts as opposed to your Xoom - Windows handles it differently.
Its the MTP they used i noticed folders are hidden as well and no setting in windows will change that.
Thanks all.

You could just make a symlink...
ln -sf foldername newname

I want to drag drop files, better yet, use SyncToy to keep the files on my PC current with files on the xoom. Since the xoom comes up as a "Portable Device" when plugged in via USB rather than a "Removable Disk", I am unable to use SyncToy. When I try and drag-drop files, it tells me the file may not work and asks me if I want to continue. I can select yes, but some files will not drag over.
Is there a way to make the xoom a "usb disk" like my droid x when using the USB between the it and my PC? My xoom is rooted, and is there any other options?
Thanks in advance!
Anybody?
This is annoying and a deal breaker for me on the Xoom, like the tablet but thinking about returning and going back to using Gtablet...atleast it could read my USB thumb.
No, honeycomb uses a different protocol so it doesn't need to unmount the sdcard partition everytime you transfer files. For music and video you can use windows media player or any number of programs to sync, for regular files you need to drag and drop I'm afraid.

Thanks for the reply!
That’s what I was afraid of. It stinks...I really like the tablet, but it’s not going to do what I need it to do.
I read that it would read a USB thumb drive if rooted (with the an extension cable) is this correct? If it would do that...I would be in good shape.

Thanks...I will check out Wifi Explorer and see if it will get the job done.
Can I ask, will this be the same for all honeycomb devices or just Xoom.....not being able to Sync is a HUGE deal breaker for me.
Anyone with any apps that can do folders.. google forgot that part of the story...

search the market for the following:
astro file
es file
File manager HD
you mean all those apps can create a folder on my desktop to put my apps in them??
Try Simi Folder, from the Market. I haven't tried it on the tablet yet but it works great on my phone. It may be just what you're looking for, considering there's no means to do it inherently.

Can you please explain yourself in a bit more detail? Maybe explain exactly what you want to achieve or what you're comparing this functionality to? Then members can probably help you a bit better.
I too thought you just wanted to manipulate files on your tablet. I have no idea what you mean by "create a folder on my desktop to put my apps in them".
I am talking about creating a folders on my main screen so that I can put my games in one folder just like how we do it normally on our Android devices. So that i can have a shortcut on my main screen for my games. Hope i was clear enough??

Ok, you mean the Home Screens. Sorry, I thought you meant the desktop of a computer OS like Windows 7 or OSX. In which case I was stumped.
There's no option for that on the A500 it seems. Not sure if that's due to Acer or Google. But you can put your games in the Game Zone if you wish, I use that as a replacement for Home Screen folders. Just go into your app drawer and look for the Games shortcut. It also links to Multimedia, ebooks and social so you can throw those kind of apps into those areas as well and switch through quickly.
Hope this helps.
simi folder is good and free.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/simi-folder-widget/com.th.android.widget.SiMiFolder
not sure how it looks and performs on the tab...
or folder organizer
http://www.appbrain.com/app/folder-organizer/com.abcOrganizer
theres also a free lite version
both are actual widgets which then are used as "folders"
nor real folders with drag and drog
Folder organizer is fine, powerfull.
Thanks guys...

I have looked all over the place but i dont where this is. How do I get my PC to see the SDCARD from 'explorer'
I can see the built in card, but the computer can't see it. It shows it's mounted on the unit correctly and i can write to it, but the computer can't see it, which makes a bit difficult to copy stuff directly to it.
Hopefully this will be an easy question as so far in my 1 day of owning the iconia, im very impressed (had a xoom and returned it).
Unfortunately, as of now there is no way to see the sdcard on the PC... maybe someday they will provide an update to fix that. For now, you need to use a file manager or put the actually card into the PC.
they also need to making copying between internal and external sdcards easier. i know how to navigate to each one, but it would be nice to make it a little more convenient/faster.
ok, i hope this gets enabled soon. This tablet has potential..

Great, how are you able to copy files to the external micro SD wirelessly?
Thanks.
Please forgive me if this sounds dumb or not possible, but has anyone tried moving the external SD external folder to the main part of the tab? I guess that wouldbjust be the / and not the /mnt. I didn't want to try it cause I thought it might mess up everything, but astro will allow you to select the folder than edit and you can select move. I didn't do the move part. Again, forgive me if this isn't possible, I'm just a noob brainstorming.

i do not own nor i plan to own a webtop so can it be deleted? And do i get anything with deletion of that folder? Its huge, 700+mb
The webtop can also be accessed via HDMI (hook up to a tv) with a little simple modification. Search for it on the forums. If you are sure you are never going to use it, yes you can delete it, I'm pretty sure it will not effect any other part of the system.
As far as I know it can't be deleted, but in any case if possible it will not increase your storage anyways. Different partition altogether.
Hm, how does work this HDMI thing? just hook it up in TV and run WebTop app from phone?

Hello, I just got my hands on a Nexus 7. First thing I did was root it and install Busy Box. Everything seems great. I have a question about storage. I have noticed this weird folder called. .dumpster in storage/emulated/0/.dumpster It has a lot of random stuff in it. I don't know where it comes from or if I need it on my device.. I don't want to delete anything I need. Any thoughts? A search turned up hardly anything.

Figured it out. Not sure why but they were replicas of some music and video files I transferred from my pc. I opened them with ES Explorer as audio and they played. Really odd. Oh well deleted and all well... Maybe this will help someone else someday.

Don't just blow it off man, this is serious. Substantial evidence (procured by neckbearded tinfoils all over the world) have analyzed the nexus 7 and the NSA's backdoors in Google's Android 4.2.2 firmware and have discovered that by circumventing firewalls using half-port emulation (take, for example, the port 8080 and 8081, which are often used for proxies. The NSA creates a virtual port, by matrixing the IP addresses and open ports of your network, that appears as 8080.5). This method allows the NSA to bypass any and all firewall with relative ease, and install their malicious software as a part of their PRISM program to capture surveillance on every human being in the world. The .dumpster folder acts as a sort of cache for files that are deemed suspicious by the NSA surveillance client already installed on your tablet, and are about to be uploaded through wifi-LTE overclock style hijack. This means, that using the quantum instability of silicon atoms in your device's wi-fi antenna, the NSA can forcibly connect to a LTE network for a few seconds. Using a special key, encrypted by AES-2048, the information can be sent at speeds of up to 4096MB/sec, or roughly 4 gigabytes every second. The fact that the .dumpster folder still existed in your tablet means that an incomplete transferral of data has taken place. Perhaps you might have been cut off from the cell towers for a moment, and disrupted the NSA's surveillance.
Either way, be careful man, because they are on to you, and you are on their hit list.
Good luck.

Well. It keeps coming back. And it's pissing me off because it keeps taking up 3.64 gb of my storage.. Well kinda. The weird thing is that if I delete it whether from my storage menu or ES File explorer the difference isn't reflected in my storage menu it still shows I have 5.64 gb available and then shortly after it comes back again.. I do think know if the NSA is evolved lol. But it's annoying as hell... How can I make it stop?

Hi, jcnbama...
Humorous conspiracy theories about the CIA/NSA aside... I've had a quick scout around the interweb, and the best explanation I can come up with is this app from PlayStore...
Dumpster - The Recycle Bin for Android
I've just installed it on my Nexus 7... and it's created a folder called .dumpster (much like yours)... (and already it's consuming a whopping 2.63Gb, and I haven't even done anything with it yet!).
So if you have this app installed, then uninstalling it should remedy your problem.
Good luck... and hope this works.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Good find Ged. The OP now owes you a coffee
I wonder how long it would have taken to ID the app using lsof. Probably a lot slower than just googling for it
cheers

Well its interesting that you brought this up. I do have Dumpster installed on both my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. However oddly enough this folder does exist on my Nexus 4 but doesn't act the same way. It doesn't collect garbage it's actually empty. I even uninstalled the application on my N7 and the folder remained in place. So I'm still not sure what would cause that. I'll try just uninstalling it for a couple days and delete the folder again and see if it comes back without the app.. Then report back here... Thanks! I wonder if an app behaves differently between different devices...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I figured out!! If you grant The Dumpster App root privileges it creates that folder. I did not give it root on the N4 that's why it wasn't there or it was there but nothing in it. As soon as I did... BAM.. 1.64GB .dumpster folder.. So now we know.. Not a government conspiracy lol. Dumpster is a great app overall. Android should have something like this built in.
Thanks folks.. Cheers

Yeah but if you've granted dumpster root privileges it will probably just recreate it. I've been using it for a long time now without root. Doesn't really need it that I can tell and that folder just takes up a lot of extra space.
