Hey guys,
I'm sort of a newb with these phones but I am starting to learn. Last night I updated my stock phone on 2.1 to the stock Froyo 2.2. I then read about the FR008 and how much better it was, and I want to be able to update to this version instead of the 2.2 Froyo.
Is it possible to do this? I really don't want to brick my phone so any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have been looking through the Liberated Aria 2.2.2 thread along with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819715
I downloaded the second one (liberated aria FR008) but haven't done anything yet.
Thanks!
You can't root because you updated to stock 2.2 which contains an unrootable hboot as of this time.
Signatures are fancy.

I thought you could root with unrevoked 3.32? didn't they add support in 3.2?
v3.2:
Added support for Froyo builds on all supported devices (thanks to Sebastian Krahmer)
Added support for the CDMA Desire
Optionally disables security on supported CDMA devices

Support for Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) is different than having support for the underlying HBOOT version which needs a loophole to remain rooted. Along with the factory update of the OS, an HBOOT update was also tacked on closing the loophole and thus diminishing the ability to root.

So I'm guessing there's no possible way to redo the hboot sector? I shouldn't have done that update then. Oh well someone will figure out the root soon enough I hope
This is my phone's versions:
Android: 2.2.2
Baseband: 47.63.35.21.....
Kernel: 2.6.32.21
Build: 2.20.502
Software: 2.20.502.1
Is there any way I can go to a liberated froyo from where I am at?
Asked and answered already.

To make it a bit more clear, when you updated to 2.2, the update replaced the version of HBoot originally on the phone and root capable with an updated version that at this time cannot be rooted. Until an exploit is discovered, you're screwed.

Ahh FML. Figures that I updated it a few hours before I discovered this stuff.
Damn, same here. I'm sure it will be figured out soon enough but I really miss my rooted aria.
I do feel your pain. I was worried that the Aria I was getting from AT&T for a penny was going to have 2.2 on it out of the box. If I didn't also have an unlocked Dell Streak coming in with 2.2 already installed on it, I'd say it was an unfounded fear. The Dell Streak started with 1.6.
I really should have known...
Some how I didn't even think about checking for the option to "go back" to my rooted phone. I feel like an idiot. This is sometimes the best way to learn. I await an update from those with the power
::sigh::

Since the 2.1 new update was released, I figured it would be a higher version number than our leaked 2.1. That means we could hboot it to our phones to update.
But wait, could some developer root this update (maybe in a similar to the way they rooted 1.5 to 2.1 root) so the leaked 2.1 people could hboot to this new update for 2.1 except it would be rooted.
Sorry if that was confusing.
Here's where the update was found:
androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/55898-you-dont-need-root-new-leak.html
As far as I understand it, the reason that 2.1 OTA can be installed for users running leaked 2.1 is because it has a higher subversion number and it is SIGNED. That is the tricky part. Because your SPL / HBoot is S-ON, meaning that it will only install signed zips, you are still unable to install a rooted 2.1. The reason that the exploit worked on 1.5 is because the PB00IMG.zip IS a signed package, but the versioning only puts it ahead of 1.5, not Leaked 2.1 or OTA 2.1. Once the PB00IMG.zip is installed, it turns S-OFF so that unsigned (e.g. rooted) packages. From what I have read in other posts, devs are moving toward trying to find exploits in the new 2.1 OTA for users who have already upgraded without root. I would personally recommend doing the 2.1 OTA and hanging tight for the next exploit.
Thank you man. So, would it not be possible to turn S-OFF in this new update? I understand that would require going in and tampering with the files, which could break the signature on the package, possibly?
Precisely, if you change one bit of a signed file, the signature changes completely. As I understand it, the PB00IMG.zip file that is used to root 1.5 phones was "stumbled upon" already signed by HTC. For any future rooting for people with 2.1, this file is unusable because the versioning of this convenient package is older than what leakers and official 2.1 adopters have. It is impossible to modify the 2.1 update without breaking the sig. We now have to hope that devs can find an exploit or broken code in the new 2.1 update that allows for rooting by another means.
If you are desperate, feel free to try to socially engineer Verizon. That has met with considerable success from some other early adopters. If not, play the waiting game. In the mean time, feel free to upgrade to the OTA 2.1 leak. It fixes some things like Google relogin.

So, I installed the first 2.1 leak. Can I install this new one that just came out in the last couple days? Sorry, guess I'm not seeing the answer here
If we were able to find a way to modify the update to include root with a valid signature, we would also be able to modify the version number to a higher number than the current 2.1 leak. I'm pretty sure upgrading to the "official" 2.1 won't hurt our chances of finding root, it'll just make the wait less buggy
jearl75:
Yeah, you can install the new leak over the old one, no worries.
so should us people on the first 2.1 leak upgrade to the newest one or stay on the first one??

I reckon that depends on if you're experiencing the Google login bug or not. My wife's Eris with the first leaked 2.1 is not. And if you are experiencing that bug, which is more hassle...logging into Google repeatedly, or rebuilding your phone (apps, contacts, etc) from scratch??

its not that bad since i rarely restart my phone, i guess my real question would be would it make it longer until i get root? or are devs trying to root the NEW 2.1 instead of the old 2.1
I apologize if this gets old, but I am trying to be cautious so I don't brick my phone...
I downloaded the following leaked 2.1 version a few weeks ago, and have this installed:
Baseband version: 2.40.00.01.22
Kernel version: 2.6.29-5898f66b / [email protected] #1
Build number: 2.19.605.1 CL12345 test-keys
Software number: 2.19.605.1
I have a problem installing the new version of Google Maps. Phone dial can be sluggish and/or unresponsive at times, but it is manageable. Overall, the installation of the leaked ROM went fine, and I feel like I am pushing my luck if I try to download the latest ROM. Does anyone know if the latest release addresses the issues above? I am not experiencing any of the login issues to Gmail that others are experiencing.
My question is this: Should I just leave well enough alone and wait for the OTA at this point?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I Know that when I installed the new Leak, the dialer lag was MUCH improved, as was the phone signal and general stability, Gmail doesn't make you log back in every reboot, and on my phone my "get more HTC widgets" link is fixed. But I heard on others phones it wasnt. It Does wipe all your apps even though its 2.1 -> 2.1. But Just like last time the SD card is untouched.
The installation process is exactly the same. I recommend it.
EDIT- Actually I just noticed the build you have installed is test keys signed and to my knowledge only the root rom was test key signed. This being the case if you want to keep root I would flash a custom cooked ROM... Since your lucky enough to have the chance to do so... Sigh..
Wait, test keys signed means what exactly? My Eris reads that but I only installed the two leaks AFAIK?
Does it just mean signed by HTC?

So you only installed the 2.1 non-root Leaks??? I may be mistaken, but both times I flashed the leaks, 2.1a +2.1b, both had builds signed with release keys... I was under the impression that only the 2.1 leak+root was signed with test keys.

You are exactly correct: Both of the leaked 2.1 roms have release keys, while the 1.5->2.1 root rom (and any rom based on that upgrade) will have test keys.

Sorry no one has been clean on this before:
The 2.1 leak was leaked from HTC by riverrunner. We actually don't care about the hboot version, radio version is the main thing updaters look at (we've found that out since root).
The 2.1 update that had root built in was also an HTC leak. It contained SU. That was the difference. We didn't do ANYTHING to get root. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. It was leaked by someone at HTC. Simple enough. So, we CANNOT redo this, becuas we did NOTHING.
Hope this clears it up. Thanks!

I'm glad this was finally publicly admitted. I got kind of tired of the devs going around pretending they actually did something besides getting lucky with a leak.

So I thought I read on here multiple times that it was impossible to upgrade the Eris from the 2.1 Leak to the 2.1 OTA. Just for the hell of it, I gave it a shot. To my amazement it worked. Did I misunderstand the forum or is this really not supposed to happen?
Edit: Grammar
Can you explain more clearly please? Ota from Verizon or?
If you are referring to the "so-called" Verizon OTA release candidate it is possible to update from the 2.1 leak to this version, it's just not possible to update to the 2.1 root which, I may be mistaken, at one point had been called OTA in a few places.
Well When the first 2.1 Leak came out I immediately upgraded to it.
It was this one
HTC 2.1 Leak Rom
Verizon test rom, REJECTED. Do not Install if you want root.
Rom: http://www.sendspace.com/file/frqze0
I downloaded it from the original post from the Taiwanese guy who posted it on here in the first place.
Then just today I thought why not give it a shot and install the newest one. Which was this one.
HTC 2.1 Release Candidate (AKA OTA) Leak Rom
Verizon test rom, possible OTA leak. Do not Install if you want root.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RHNAWUR0
Was this not supposed to be possible or not? I thought I read on here that once the Leaked 2.1 was installed, nothing else could be installed. That we were stuck with it.
Let me know if you need any more info.

Oh ok, I guess that's what I did then. I was just confused. This version seems to run A LOT smoother.
Thanks for the answer.
On the contrary, from all I've read, I was of the understanding that upgrading from 2.1 old leak to 2.1 new leak was not only possible, but recommended, if the few bugs in old 2.1 leak...bugged you. Did my upgrade a few days ago from leak old to leak new, and it I like it.
Thanks for all the hard work, leakers and devs!

This is good to know!!!
It depends on how verizon packages the update. If its OTA, without an RUU or PB00IMG.zip, chances will be small (unless they do a format, then complete install, as custom roms do.) OTA's are targetted from one platform to another.
All,
We have noticed an alarming number of people coming to the IRC channel with "new" phones from Asurion (the insurance company) that have 2.1 OTA and a 1.49 bootloader.
We need to know if new phones from a Verizon store that comes with 2.1 have a 1.49 bootloader or not.
So, if you have a new phone, before rooting please do the following and report your findings:
Reboot your phone and hold down power + volume down. When you are presented with the HBOOT menu, tell me what the version number is at the top (should be 1.47.00 or 1.49.00 or similar).
i just got a new eris from the verizon store monday with 1.5
bootloader 1.47.00

Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
I got my eris from the verizon store. It was a replacement phone and it had the 1.47 boot loader on it, this as a week ago. Ya it was only in its virgin 1.5 state for as long as it took to drive the phone to my house.

Also, my Eris says its 1.49 but its rooted. It came to me with 1.5, not sure if its been 1.49 the whole time but it is now and I've never done leaks or ota.

Baseband 2.42.00.04.12

It is a new phone, ordered through our business sales rep.

you can root.
Got my refurb last week, now rooted.
HBOOT 1.49.2000
I have been rooted since we found root. I leaked on my original phone but Verizon sent me a new phone in the mail because they didnt have any in stock.
HBOOT-1.49.2000 S-OFF
Jan 24 2010
I have never updated the bootloader... unless the root rom updated it..

FALSE.
Sorry , goedls, you can't root.
Here's the go down.
Users who ran 1.5 and got the 2.1 OTA DID NOT get a bootloader update, so using the old bootloader, you can go to the root rom which runs .49 S-OFF (Engineering SPL)
Both the leaks and root roms have .49 BUT the root rom has older system information, so installing it from a leak rom which has newer system information, you will not be able to use it to root.
If your phone comes with a new bootloader, chances are, you cannot root.
There is a difference between the bootloaders:
2.1 Root ROM-> .49 S-OFF
2.1 Leaked Roms-> .49
Strongly suggests that VZW is flashing the so-called "leak" v3 onto phones, doesn't it ?

Not necessarily but I see what you're saying.
Supposedly, the RUU coming out for this update flashes this new bootloader.
delete....
To be honest, I can't believe for a second that VZW is going to unbox all the phones they have in stock to update the software. Of course, if the phone is still on 1.5, it doesn't match what I presume VZW is advertising as features of the Eris (presuming they talk about 2.1 features).
I should be receiving a replacement later today, I'll check back in.

You would have to revert back to stock in order to get the OTA if/when it comes out. There really is no need though. You will find the latest updates here, probably before you would get them on your phone. CR is the best at getting us out the latest stuff and keeping everything updated.

Why in the world would you return to the restrictions of being on stock?
A rooted ver of the OTA is always made here in xda so theres no point in bother with stock, root gives you complete control over your phone and allows you to make it yours.
Just what I stated as above TO GET THE OEM OTA AND POST IT HERE. I'm well aware of rooting and S-Off I had both before going back to stock, re-rooting and S-offing again isn't that big of a deal. I did a nadroid backup before I went back to stock so I can have my phone back in short order.

um...You probably should have waited till they actually start sending out the OTA. Second, It doesnt come in a update.zip file so unless you know how to extract the complete file from your phone after it has been updated and then turn it into a update.zip you are going to be S.O.L.
It doesn't matter !

I know this may seem stupid to a lot of people on here, but I want to switch from my rooted 2.1 Aria and update it to 2.2. The main reason I want to do this is for the apps that are only available for froyo (I loved my rooted phone, but I also want the update).
I downloaded the RUU 2.2 from the HTC site and went through the process. The only problem is that my phone did not update. The info on the phone says that it's version 2.2.2, but the UI and everything else is still 2.1 format. Basically the brain is froyo, but the body is eclair. I contacted customer service, and they said that I would need to send my phone in for repair since it was rooted (i.e. broken to them).
I would rather not send in my phone and deal with them. Can anyone think of any solution to this problem? Thanks!

I would rather not send in my phone and deal with them. Can anyone think of any solution to this problem? Thanks!

Well, it's too late now, but you could have simply installed the Liberated 2.2.2 update from this site -- which is basically the AT&T official update with the bloatware removed and it lets you retain root access on your phone.
Anyway, what makes you believe that your UI is still 2.1? Honestly there is very little visually different between 2.1 and 2.2.2 so it wouldn't look very different anyway.

The version of HTC Sense did not change much between Android 2.1 and 2.2. If you phone says that it's version 2.2.2 then the update probably took. As the previous posted mentioned, you are not going to see much difference in the UI. If you look in the list of installed apps, you should see some news, including the Wifi Hotspot.
Thanks for the replies so far. The reason why I say it's still a 2.1 UI is because from what I've seen of screenshots of froyo, it looks different. The froyo interface (at least from what I've seen) looks like the current one that cyanogenmod is using. I know the current cyanogenmod is based on Gingerbread, but I was thinking that there wasn't a big difference between gingerbread and froyo, while the big difference change was between eclair and froyo. Also, my hboot version is 1.02. Is this a sign of 2.1 or 2.2?
I am still not able to install 2.2 only apps (such as Flash 10.2) on my phone, which is why I'm thinking it's still partially stuck in 2.1.

You will never be able to install Flash on your device since it requires an ARM7 processor, ours have a ARM6 (at least until Adobe build a version that does not require the ARM7 instructions set). If your Hboot is 1.02, then your phone DID take the update - you are stuck with it until if/when someone is able find a new root exploit.

Ok thanks a lot for that! I'm still learning all the intricacies of the droid processing system. Let's hope for a root for 2.2 soon.

You're thinking of the updated AOSP look. The Aria uses the HTC Sense UI which didnt change at all on the Aria between 2.1 and 2.2 (not visually anyway). hboot 1.02 is definitely an update to 2.2.
