I am currently running ViperROM(DK28) version 3.0.3. I followed all of the instructions for fixing GPS on 2.2 and then flashed to this ROM.
Whenever I remove the DRM services I notice 2 strange things that happen:
1. Quadrant is not able to complete, it gets stuck on the first test at the Video Decoding.
2. I'm unable to select a new ringtone notification in handcent, when I press OK for my selection it hangs and I have to FC it.
The reason I want to remove the DRM services is that it appears to negatively affect battery life. I notice an improvement when they are removed. If I restore the DRM services everything starts working good again.
Any ideas?
I wont flame you,but this has been discussed plenty, search please...Anyway,you cant remove any of the 3 without losing some funcionaliy. So the only thing you can do is disable the one that runs at boot, not uninstall.I have tried this tip that orked for a day, once you have a fresh rom installed, play some music, watch a ripped movie, change a ringtone and notification, then remove all 3 services with sdx app removal or any other method you like. But like I said this will not work for more then 2 days at most

You're not the only one running into this issue.
I ended up rooting my Epic to get rid of all the sprint bloatware and what-not. Everything seemed to be going smooth from the stock standpoint. I removed Samsung Media hub first. Rebooted the phone and noticed nothing bad. Played around with the setup like that for a few days with no problems.
I next got rid of both the DRM service .apk's that were still running even after I got rid of the media hub... and then the problems started. For the first couple days I noticed DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED battery life and EXTRAORDINARY performance so I imagined what I did was a good thing: WRONG! A few days later, I noticed that if I assigned a sound to a notification or a ringtone *from the SD card*, that it would not work. I couldn't play sounds anymore and instead whenever I went to adjust the volume with said notes/tones selected, the Sound_service would crash.
However, I'm the only person I knew before now who has reported this issue so I'm sure there's not a lot of hubob to fix it. Every Epic is built different. Same parts or not. It's a mass-manufactured phone and each one will have its own quirks. There's my 2 cents.
I just froze the apps when I rooted with Titanium Backup but I thought I did something wrong and figured out that sound from apps seems to trigger the software crashes. No point if fixing it now. Flash DI18 and get the EC05 update and/or get EB13.

So can anyone confirm that the EC05 fixes the DRM issue? Otherwise there's no point in upgrading. I saw the release thread on here. Hecka people already having problems with the EC05. To upgrade for the Sprint ID packs? Won't see me do it...
Just let it do its thing. The amount of functonality you lose removing it is not worth the minute amount of battery life you'll save.

I have to disagree about the amount of battery life I'm saving being minute. When I had this damned DRM service running, I maybe got 10-12 hours with moderate usage. Without it running and now with SRF1.0.2 running (gets rid of IQ), plus SetCPU to (clocking 200-400 when screen off, undervolting 1.0-1.2 during usage) I'm getting a good 20 hours with heavy usage or I can go 2 days without charging if I only use texting.
I do actually remember getting a good bit more battery from deleting the DRM but at the end of the day I'd rather have my music files and apps work properly. I'm used to keeping a charger on me, its just the nature of owning a smart phone.
Yeah I'm with you on that one. Hopefully this will be one challenge [ACS] will be up to digging into.
I just tried stopping it in the running services menu and tested it on a few things with no issues. Doesn't take more than 15 seconds. I'll probably start incorporating it in to my TWS/Airplane mode routine (which just happens to need around 15 seconds supposedly) whenever I reboot.
That's what alot of other people have been saying too. I guess that's what I have to do.
Some threads on SDX about this say you can use some killers to stop it at bootup (personally I've always hated killers since Android 2.0, you don't need them anymore). As long as the .apk and .odex's are there. It's only when you uninstall or freeze it that you start to run into problems 1-3 days down the line.
I use Startup Auditor and it only kills it briefly. I've read all the arguments against Task Killer but I'm still a fan of it. Its especially useful to see what programs start up on their own and I do notice better performance after killing the ones that have no business being open. For everything else I just set it to ignore them.
Hi everyone,
So my Razr M is getting a lot of random wakelocks while the screen is off, for example overnight. I'm not sure what the cause could be. I always have a stable signal, so I don't think it could be that... I've also downloaded an app to detect if it's an app that is causing it, seems like Facebook, Email, etc. is syncing a lot which could be it, but even when I froze them it looked about the same.
It's not a massive problem, as I have great battery life still (~30hrs +), but I am curious as to what it could be. Any help would be great!
Are you rooted? If you are, I would download an app called greenify, it will watch your phone and tell you which apps are waking your phone and then if its an app you Dont need running until you open it you can hibernate it, I think its the best battery saving app out there
Okay, thank you, I will give greenify a go.
Yeah, my phone is rooted with an unlocked bootloader, but still with stock ROM. It's an XT905 with Australian Telstra firmware, if it makes any difference.
Just one data point, but it seems like a very clear takeaway:
I used titanium to uninstall a bunch of social apps, specifically anything including the words
facebook
twitter
flickr
instagram
linkedin
picasa
Importantly, I included any related apps (eg "Facebook Engine.." "Facebook for HTC Sense" etc)
I also uninstalled Car.. and HTC Car..
I found to my surprise that battery life got worse.
Much worse.
I ran the phone like this for two weeks and got somewhere between half and three-quarters of the battery performance during a normal day's use. A key observation is I went from losing 1-6% battery capacity overnight to losing 20% every night.
I restored a nandroid backup (returning the phone to its state immediately before removing these apps - - I made the nandroid for this reason and only this reason, and removing the social apps was the only change I made to the phone after making the nandroid) and my battery life immediately returned to normal. The last two nights since I made the change I lost only 2% battery life instead of 20.
Again, this is only one data point, and it's *possible* some other random thing happened in my world that could have caused this. But I really earnestly tried to be scientific (and patient) about this, and to me at least the result was very VERY clear.
Just leave the social apps, even if you don't use them.
[NB- I always remove 7digital, kidmode, rescue security, and I sometimes remove Chrome, and have never noticed an effect on battery life after removing those apps, over many months of owning the phone]
PS I don't have the paid version of TB, so no, I didn't freeze, I uninstalled outright and was forced to nandroid back to get to where I was before.
That sounds very strange!?
well, anyway, those apps, how much space are they taking from storage?
i feel i dont need to remove any apps, have plenty of room.
Just disable them under apps, and the hide the rest with whatever launcher you're using.
Battery life was fine for me (when I ran stock), and it's fine on my gf's one (who is currently still stock)
I remover app bloat all the time and get better battery. Are your sure your not doing it wrong?

Just selected the app in Titanium and clicked "uninstall". You tell me - is that doing it wrong?
I don't think this so much about *how* to uninstall an app but rather *whether* to uninstall an app that other parts of the whole system are expecting to be there.

Usually bloatware is installed as a system app. Sometimes when you uninstall them you can get some weird wakelocks or FC's. I usually freeze the app. Delete all data then uninstall.

This is true. Get an app like BetterBatteryStats and it will tell you if there is anything causing excessive drain. I have personally never experienced worse battery life after installing social apps.
That's crazy talk. Its definitely all in your head...
Experienced similar thing too. Tried several "debloated" ROMs like Trickdroid, Orio, few others (both when they were 4.2 and now leaked 4.3) and had an awful battery life. Went back to 4.2.2 stock (2.24.401.8) and now I can use my phone throughout the day again.
Well, what's being discussed here is taking a virgin stock ROM that has been running happily for some time and then using titanium to uninstall all the social apps at once: this method may cause wakelocks.
A ROM that has had all the "bloat" removed in advance before you even flash it seems less likely to leave your phone in such a state?
I'm not saying your experience is not real, and it raises an interesting point, but it still seems to me if bad battery life were common to all those debloated ROMs, I think we'd have heard more about it by now?
The right way to really test this, which was suggested above and I'm sorry I didn't do, is install BBS or GSAM and find out *what* is eating battery.
All I know is
- I changed X
- Things got worse
- I undid X
- Things got better

Now to test again remove the bloat again and see what the battery life does. But it's good you actually did some testing unlike the people calling you crazy but if your battery life decreases again after repeating the experiment the results are much stronger.
i remove all bloat that i would never use and my battery is fine
When I was stock, I froze everything that I considered to be bloat. I typically don't uninstalled system components. There's always a chance of borking something by uninstalling something you shouldn't have.

I'll uninstall carrier apps, because those are added after the fact. Uninstalling system apps can definitely cause issues. Better to hide them like someone suggested.
Hi,
I'm new to android and decided to go for note 3.
First few days my battery life was excellent. After that my phone has done some updates on samsung apps and my battery is a c**p..
I did disable some apps and installed avg where I can stop proces and kill tasks and after that the battery was good again. But now again 2 days ago another auto update and my battery is c**p again... Is there a way to stop this proces and can I uninstall sime of this stock apps?
Please when you reply don't use any shortcuts for androif d because I can't understand them.
I was looking at custom roms and maybe I would go with omega rom. I like this stock but it is preloaded with too many stupid apps.
Do you guys still use Greenify? Non root and rooted S8 users.
I don't use it anymore. I think the Device Manager does a good job.
i have it installed but it isn't activated/in-use. i wanted to wait to see how the phone managed itself first and so far it's leaps and bounds better than my S6 Edge. if things stay stable i will probably remove Greenify all-together.
I've been wondering if anyone has used it. I have been using it for years on my rooted Droid turbo with great success. Just wondering if none root mode is worth it.
I used it as non-root user, now I use it as root user. It's good to be sure that no app will stay awake and drain my battery, that's why I've never stopped using Greenify
I think it depends.
With wakelock detectors, greenify it self do cause a lot of wakelocks.. Not to mention that now days many apps manage to go around Greenify methods of hibernation.
It do worth if you have a rough app that keep waking up.
If you don't, it's better to be off.
I my self still have it instaled, but as i freeze the apps that go rogue (like play store) and unfreeze when i want to use it.. i'm one step to make a TB of it and uninstall
