[Q] Help #2 DX (How to get stock back after unroot) - Droid X General

ok i figure out how to unroot with Z4, but how do i get rid of fisson rom manager and the installed theme. Is there a link to download the stock 2.2.1, and if so can i just boot the phone into recovery and flash a zip.

Get the Team Black Hat app in the market for 2 bucks. Download the full 2.3.340 sbf zip and flash in recovery. You will be back to a completely clean slate.
I just saw your other post. You might want to read up on rsd lite. It will sbf your phone through your computer since you don't have bootstrap.

i have bootstrap i redownloaded it. im trying to get this back to stock i want the thuderbolt

which one do i installed

Just download the maderstcok zip file for free and it accomplishes the same thing.

ok i downloaded that zip but its stuck in the stock boot up should have i down a wipe before doinf this

Yeah you should have done it beforehand.
Go into stock Moto recovery and wipe cache and do a wipe data/factory reset then reboot and you should be good.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

If that still doesn't work I'd recommend SBF'ing. It is quite easy and it gets you back to 100% stock

Ok, this is why people who either don't ask question before rooting, or just dont ask questions period should NOT root and rom their phones.
You should have known from the beginning to get bootstrapper, and then before doing ANTYHING you should have backed up your default operating system. This way you dont have to shell out $$$$ for something thats free for them and for you. they are making 200% profit on this guy lol.

not sure if this was made clear but my attention span is only worth for posts. Anyways, you need to get your root back and install bootstrap. Then use the tbh 340 zip or maddetstock and flash 340. When you reboot you will be unrooted 340 stock. Then format your sd and you will be out of the box stock.

Not quite. Closer to stock, but not actually stock. There are directories that sbf'ing, or using the zipped "ota" won't remove. I found that out quickly when manually removing pieces of the Tranquility ROM.
I'm not positive, but I don't think sbf'ing or using the ota zip will remove the initial boot logo, either (I'd have to double check this, but certainly at one point in time it would not).
You also are generally left with remnants of the bootstrapper. This is why in order to get ota updates in the past, people went in and renamed/deleted as needed.
As simple as wiping/formating/sbf'ing would seem, it really doesn't wipe the phone to stock.

[Q] Flashing a New Rom on 2.3.40

Ok i just want to be Safe because last time i bricked my phone i was very new to flashing roms and had to wait a whole month before my Droid X came back from the factory (warranty)
iv since then learned about SBFing and such but i dont know about installing a new rom on my Droid X. I know theres a System SBF but if i want to install a completly different rom
For Examle:
Apex > Fission
Fission > GummyJAR
etc..
do i just Flash the System Sbf then factory reset then flash new rom? or can i not do roms yet sinces theres no Full sbf for 2.3.40
Sorry if this is posted again i just dont want to break my phone...Again.
Currently Running Apex 1.3
On 2.3.40 (2.2.1) like i said up there ^^^
With the GingerBread theme
You will want to get your phone up to .340 before flashing any ROMs based on that version. If you haven't gotten the OTA update yet, then you can follow the process I did:
Flash the .320 Full SBF
Flash the .340 System-Only SBF
Factory Reset
Root using z4root
Install Droid X Bootstrapper (I recommend the donate version on the Market because the app is just so damn useful)
Nandroid backup so you can easily go back to "stock + root" without another SBF
Start flashing ROMs using Clockwork Recovery (be sure to follow the steps outlined by each Chef). I recommend DarkSlide 4.1, it's awesomesauce on a phone, available Blurred or Blurless.
If you flash a ROM that you don't like, all you have to do is restore the Nandoid backup, and start over.
What if i didnt make a Nandroid before flashing a rom should i just SBF the System that TBH did then then back up then flash?

You do not have to Nandroid the original config + root. I did it only to speed up the process of changing ROMs since you will occasionally run into issues going from Chef A's ROM to Chef B's.
If you haven't gone too far, I would suggest starting over.
So im on apex now if I want to example switch to simply stunning I can just place it over apex?

Generally speaking, yes. But you will need to read each ROM thread and follow their install instructions to make sure you can safely go to a different custom ROM.

[Q] Need Help-Can'tRemove Clockwork mod after factory reset

Can't remove clockwork mod after factory reset complete with .340 back. I have tried everything. I have read that I could remove 2 files in root exployer but am lost as to how to complete. Phone never been flashed. Just rooted with clockword Mod and rooted with Z4root. Please Help
Not too sure why you want to remove it. If you want to get rid of root and clockwork then use the SBF.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I still have a hard time understanding how people really think that doing a factory reset magically flashes the stock OS back. All it does it erase user data and apps. Use the root explorer method or sbf.
I have unrooted and have factory .340 but can't get rid of boot to clockwork mod. I have read sbf will not remove it, so I havent done it. i never flashed a rom, was just curious and wanted to learn. Just need help getting rid of clockwork mod at boot. I thought this was a place for help not downgrading people

After you SBF, do a factory reset using Motorola's recovery. When the phone boots back up, you will be unrooted and without Clockwork.

There are no stupid questions.
Here is the guide I followed to SBF my phone. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-hacks/68222-unbricking-your-droid-x.html. Depending on which OTA version your phone is on, you may need to track down the 2.3.15 Full SBF, or if on a newer version, you will need to get the 2.13.32 Full SBF and the 2.13.40 System-Only SBF. 2.13.40 is the latest OTA from Verizon.
After you follow the steps outlined about, your phone will have a mish-mash of Official OTA and whatever custom ROM you may have had. Power the phone off, and then hold the Home key while powering it back on. Release Power, but keep holding Home until you see a screen with a folder icon with a "!". Release Home, press Search, and then select Factory Reset. Once it completes, reboot the phone. The first boot will take 5-7 minutes of staring at the animated Motorola splash, and you will have a complete, non-rooted, stock ROM without Clockwork.
Hope this helps.

If the SBF completes successfully, a factory reset from the Motorola recovery menu (can only be accessed using the key combo I mentioned earlier) will completely remove Clockwork. If Clockwork still boots, the restore was not done correctly.

For anyone who might want to remove the bootstrap recovery, outside of having to reload an SBF, the instructions below are what I used to remove Clockwork from my DX. (I was tired of it always booting into Clockwork when I powered my device off and on. I found this in another forum, which references a couple of other forums below.
Removing Bootstrap Recovery:
Removal from an Androidforums post:
UNINSTALL the Recovery APK (Droid X Bootstrapper) in Settings, Applications
Reboot
Run "adb shell"
Run "su"
Run "mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system"
Run "cp /system/bin/logwrapper.bin /system/bin/logwrapper"
Reboot
or
1. Reroot
2. Get root explorer in the market
3. Uninstall the bootstrap app
4. Go into root explorer to system/bin
5. In top right corner tap r/w
6. Delete the file called hijack
7. Delete logwrapper
8. Rename logwrapper.bin to just logwrapper
9. Reboot and it should be gone.
(thanks to Droidforums member Hostility6)
The commands can be used with terminal emulator do all the commands except for the first command. (Run adb shell)
are you turning your phone on while holding volume down ...if so that is why its booting into clockwork mod...but in all fairness you were contradicting yourself.... and I am a noob as well and having issues with the clockwork 3.0 but I have given up because i cant downgrade without errors and there are no answers on these forums about its solution so i will wait it out... uninstall clockwork will also not get you stock and I cant understand why the phone is booting into clockwork recovery and not the OS.. or did I misread and misunderstand your original question...

[Q] Getting to Clockworkmod Recovery the hard way

I have a rooted X stuck at the M logo(I can get to the stock recovery) and I want to know if there's a way to get to Clockworkmod.
I have Koush's bootstrap and Clockworkmod installed, so all I need is something that will trigger the bootstrap.
The backstory is that I was uninstalling Blur applications from ApeX and got a little overzealous, and now it won't boot(probably waiting for an application that's never going to start).
Ive heard that if you hold the down volume button when powering on, it will send you to bootstrap.

I think you're in for an SBF Flash. I had a similar problem the other day (tried to install a new rom...foolishly didn't make sure the battery was charged.) I tried all the above and then wound up doing a flash. Once I was back to stock the then gained root (another story) I quickly loaded Bootstrapper & restored my primary ROM (Darkslide 4.1) and am now a happy camper again.
I eventually gave up and SBF'd to stock, rooted, and then reinstalled ApeX. I was able to keep /data through the whole process, so I didn't lose too much. Is there any way to set up clockworkmod that it will always load in place of the default recovery system?

I've had it installed the entire time. By default it only bootstraps/loads clockworkmod if you tell it to(specifically you need to be able to write to /data/.recovery_mode) so you can't just boot into it when your phone is off.
What I want is a way to essentially replace the stock recovery app.

So does Koush and the rest of the Droid X owners...
Rubix has this feature sorta. If u install rubix drod implemented a beta fix that should boot into recovery if the battery is left out for x mins typically 3-5. From what I understand as long as the /system isn't formatted after installing rubix even if u use a different Ron this fix will still work. Might be worth installing rubix just to get this feature... and chances are if u haven't tried it before u might not want to leave rubix
Unless someone cracks the bootloader there is no easy to overwrite the stock recovery on droid x

Coming from an Unrevoked Forever Incredible, I've been searching for the same thing. Found this on another forum:
Getting Into Clockwork In a Pinch for Droid X
I saw a write up on this in another thread and I thought we needed it here too. I use this trick a lot and took it for granted that everyone knew it. Say you can't get into your phone to reboot into recovery through the Bootstrap App. Here are the Steps to get into Clockwork and Restore a Backup.
1) Make Sure your Phone is Plugged into the Charger.
2) Battery Pull.
3) With the Phone still Plugged into the Charger replace the Battery.
4) Wait until your Phone enters the Charging State. ( The Battery Icon Charging)
5) Hit your phone's power button, it should Boot into Clockwork Recovery. It works like a Charm for me everytime.
I figured that^ out on accident. If your stuck in the M you obviously have to battery pull but this will also work if you just reboot with a wall charger plugged in.
If you install the liberty rom, there is a feature that allows you to go into CWM every time you turn on the phone in the settings menu

Tried to install Liberty on my Droid X, messed up, stuck in a hole, plz dig me out

Up until today I never did anything to my droid x as far as rooting and roms. I kept everything completely factory and android was at its latest version which is gingerbread 2.3.3 and system version 4.5.605.MB810.Verizon.en.US.
My goal today was to finally experiment this and install Liberty Rom. I completely failed because of all the version complications and plenty of other errors. Before I describe my final problem I should backtrack and let you know exactly what I did today so you can possibly get me out of this mess.
1. The very first thing I did was follow all of the steps at a forum on droid-life "How To: Get Rooted Gingerbread On DROID X" sorry it won't let me post the link.
After all of this I ended up with gingerbread again, but I guess a rooted version. No idea why this was the tutorial I followed when trying to install liberty. Throughout the tutorial I ended up buying "Droid X BootStrapper" because the tutorial had me use it.
Right after this tutorial I bought an app called Rom Toolbox for $5.00 downloaded Liberty through it and was trying to install through it. Every time it rebooted I would get a black screen. Never worked so many issues probably because I flashed the wrong sbf or something.
Here are the programs that I ended up buying today:
z4root (free), DroidXBootStrapper ($2.00), Rom Toolbox ($5.00).
That is everything I have done and all of the apps I own. Can someone please start fresh and give me short instructions to start from scratch on how to get the latest and greatest version of Liberty on my droidx from where I'm stuck at now. I want to completely start over and I am willing to do anything. I hope the apps I bought help and I also want to assume 2 of them probably do the same thing and I didn't need them.
Buying those tools will at least help support 2 members of the community (Koush & JRummy).
I'm pretty sure Z4Root does not work on the GB versions of DX firmware. That's probably why nothing is working. You aren't actually getting root.
you are on the .605 version of GB (when you see references to .602, .605, etc ...)
To get root, start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258599
You may also want to download the Droid2 recovery rather than the DX. The D2 version is a little newer and I think avoids a slight bug on later kernels when Debug is on. The D2 version works just fine on the DX. It can be downloaded free from here:
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/08/droid-x-recovery.html
Once you are rooted and have recover properly working, you should be able to use the Rom Toolbox to download and install Liberty. Just make sure you read carefully about the 'version' requirements on any ROM.
Oh ok so I was rooting it wrong.
I easily rooted the phone using Pete's Motorola Root Tools. I realized that Rom Toolbox Pro accesses clockwork recovery when the phone is rebooted instead of the phone just restarting fully. But, I still want to start fresh and do everything from the start again. Please let me know if you have any suggestions in the way or order I am doing things. My phone is currently up rooted at 4.5.596 and rooted by Pete's Motorola Root Tools but I want to start over from the beginning so here is what I am going to do:
Note: Before I do anything I am going to format my SD card for a fresh start.
1. Use RSD_Lite 4.9 to Flash my phone back to 2.3.340 using a file called VRZ_MB810_2.3.34_1FF_01.sbf. I always do this part with no problem.
2. Do a hold power+home then search and do a system wipe/restore. Then Activate service, sign into gmail etc.
3. Now that the OS is loaded (the old version with the grey bars 2.3.340) I am going to root my phone using Petes Root Tools. (I hope I can root it with this tool when the firmware is this version.)
4. Put the 3 zip files I have on my SD card to upgrade to GB 588. Also put my GB 596 file on here.
5. I will download 1 app. D2BootStrapper. Bootstrap recovery, reboot into recovery. Install all 3 zip files from SD card. Now I boot up in GB 588.
6. Now I go right back into D2BootStrapper. Bootstrap recovery, reboot into recovery. Install GB 596. Now I have GB 596 rooted and loaded.
7. After this, shouldn't I be able to download Rom Manager Premium and Rom Toolbox Pro and test as many roms as I want? always reverting back to my original backup.
I noticed after installing liberty I was getting all kind of force close popups. And the phone wouldn't connect to service. But then I just held power + home then hit the up/down arrows and did a wipe/restore and it loaded liberty and everything works. Is this normally what has to be done when installing roms?
If there is anything wrong with my process please let me know. Whew I can't believe all that I learned in 1 day.
You've got a lot of steps there that really aren't necessary. When you install a ROM like Liberty, it replaces EVERYTHING in /system. Thus, about all that is left from a .596, .588, .602, etc install is the kernel. The Kernel doesn't change very often in Motorola builds. The last change was on .602. Thus, for your purposes there is no difference between .602 and .605 (FYI, .605 was just a keyboard fix over .602).
So, if you search around, you should find an SBF or AIO flash file to get you to .602.
Or you can simply take the OTA update from VZW after SBF'ing to .340
Once you've flashed your Rom, be sure to clear data/factory reset. You should then start with a clean system.
Alright, if you don't mind can you please let me know what steps I can avoid.
I didn't think it was possible to have a rooted .605 but I guess I was wrong.
So my goal should be to get to .605, then root it. Then install roms from there?
On your first post you said you were on .605. I'm assuming that is still the case.
If so, then root it with pete's tool (I think you've already done that).
Install D2bootstrap, then ROM Toolbox and install your rom from there.
I have to be honest, in that I've not used Liberty in a while, nor have I used Rom Toolbox. It shouldn't be a problem, just make sure that the version of Liberty you are using is for the GB kernel. Some of the older versions of Liberty (Which I did use, and like) were for the Froyo kernel (in that case, stay on .340 and do your upgrades).
Make sure you wipe data in recovery after installing the ROM. Lots of 'Boot Loops' are due to not wiping data after flashing a new rom.
Yeah
Yeah I read up on all of that. I actually might not end up going with Liberty. Going to try others like ICX. But before I do any of this I need to get to .605.
No I am not at .605 I believe that's where my phone was before I started all of this.
Right now I am flashing back to 2.3.34
Once I am back up and running there. Can you please recommend the easiest way to get to .605 and that will be my final question.
.605 should update automatic. If not you can disable the updater using titanium backup by freezing system updater.
1. Use petes tools install cwm as well
A. Droid x bootstrap get this
B. Titanium backup. Backup your apps
2. Make a backup using cwm and backup apps with tb
3. Put the rom zip files on the sd card.
4. Reboot to recovery. Reformat system data etc
DO NOT REFORMAT THE SD CARD.
5. Wipe cache davik etc.
6 flash rom. And reboot.
7 run tb for your apps
Should be a smooth and clean install. The roms are already rooted so no need to worry about that. Hope this helps

Pete's Root tool should root .605 just fine.
One last thing
As far as Clockwork recovery goes.
Should I always be in the latest version 5.0.2.0 (the blue version)
Or the old version 2.something (the green version)
Why is there 2 version and why would I ever want to flash back to the old version 2.something?

Couple things most of the updates are to add support fix minor bugs etc.
I run the one from petes all the time I forget which version. I haven't had problems.
On my mt4g slide I had to flash a modified verson of clockwork due to my phone being newer and not as much support
With that said its not a difficult process to get a new recovery image. You would need terminal emulator and root explorer. Couple of great guides on here on how to do so. Also other methods as well.
All in all the ones that pete's give you should suffice. Unless your one of the extreame types of people who want the newest or like messing around.
Just remember backups can make the process and hassle of soft bricking your phone much easier to fix and takes a few mins to do.
Look around the forums lots of great information from the devs, experts, etc

The newer version changes the way backups are stored. The new format is smaller and quicker.
Among other issues/bug fixes as mentioned before, but the backup issue is important as the new version will not restore the old style backups.

I rooted my droid x on .621 using the method where you boot from a usb, and what to get a custom ROM like liberty ROM but will that set off the efuse and if so when i get stuck in recovery mode how would i fix that?
I haven't heard the term eFuse since 2009 xD
You will not set off anything that could potentially brick your device. If this is your first time flashing a ROM, be sure to make a nandroid backup in ClockworkMod Recovery.
This phone is almost impossible to brick. Anything that may go wrong with it can be reset with an easy SBF.
If you have any more questions I would be happy to answer them.

dude you've got to sbf back to stock droid x. i would use the .602 build and then you can always just update when back to .621 via about phone-software update.
but youre gonna have to find the sbf by searching online.

If you're on the .621 you cannot revert back to .602/.605. Moto broke this for us.
OP: If you use your Droid X on Verizon and don't want Linux (even though you can burn a live CD or make a bootable thumb drive) you can use the Windows RSD Lite method as well. Choice is yours

Before I decided to go back to CM9 there is a patched version of Liberty v3 2.0 that I was using for a long time that Goose306 over @ Rootz and Droid X Forums has been so gracious to make for us. It runs really smooth and you can put in as much or as little of the Moto Blur as you choose.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/21337-roms-multi-rom-thread-blur-based-roms-for-those-on-621604/
There's a list of roms that he's patched for those of us on the .621 OTA that starts about 1/3 of the way down the post and he's even provided detailed instructions on how to patch other roms for use on this update as well.

Just saying if you break it, you bought and I'm not responsible for anything adverse you do to your phone....
That being said, I'm going to assume you've never done any of this before. You will need to download the rom and the latest version of gapps for GB (not sure about the date, but you can grab it here: http://goo.im/gapps/ ) to your SD Card. DO NOT UNZIP THESE
(I'm doing the steps without actually flashing anything or wiping my data as I type this to give you perfect info)
You will need to grab Droid 2 Bootstrap off the play store ($1.99). Go in and hit Bootstrap Recovery. Grab Rom Manager while you're in the Play Store and update CWM to the newest version(make sure you choose Droid X 2nd Init). Reboot into CWM using Rom Manager and first things first before you touch any other option, MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP!!! Select Backup / Restore and then select backup. Let CWM do it's thing and then you will want to use the Power button to go back to the main menu. If you hit it one too many times, the screen will go black but don't panic! Just push it once to make everything come back.
Select "wipe data/factory reset" and scroll down and hit yes. This will wipe any apps you have installed and accounts as well as the system's cache. Once that's done, select "advanced" and then select "Wipe Dalvik Cache" then hit yes again. Once that part finishes, you will hit the power button once to go back to the main menu.
Now select "install zip from sdcard" and then "choose zip from sdcard". You will now need to navigate to where you saved the rom. Once you find it, select it, then scroll down and hit yes. When you get there, let it do it's thing. I'll wait
After that finishes hit choose zip from sdcard again and navigate to the gapps zip you grabbed. Install that as well.
Now hit the power button once more to go to the main menu and select Reboot System Now. Give it a few minutes to boot as it has to rebuild caches and the dalvik cache. When it comes up, you're all set! If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here and I'll give you a hand.

If you're still getting the error in the bootloader, then you need to SBF first since the kernel has probably been overwritten by the one from .602/.605. Since I don't use Google Talk the gapps package I use for GB roms for any phone is:
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip
how are you trying to install the .zip?
edit:
nevermind
