The Dreaded Premium Data-Add on

I'm looking to get the Evo but the $10 a month Premium data-add on is something that is holding me back. What I am trying to figure out is whether this is actually required by the phone or not. I was told back in the days that the Blackberry Internet Service was "required" for activation, yet I easily activated the phones without the internet plan, and I was even able to activate a few with the internet plan then go back and remove the internet plan and it still worked! I to this day don't believe Sprint when they tell me something won't work, so I'm trying to find a solution to this. Is there anyway the command forcing the phone to search to see if the subscriber has the data add on can be accessed? Would it be a file or a command? And wouldn't I just be able to do what I did with my Blackberry's in the past and just cancel the premium data add on after activation and keep the phone working like normal?
Another user explained to me that a user on these forums: Toast is working on some sort of solution to this?

I'm pretty sure no. As with the pre and hero I think the sprint system knows the imei for the phones and will require this. Looking in my account, I can see the premium data plan, and It does not let me remove it. If there's some special way, who knows, but I don't think I've heard of one yet.
I'm actually ok with the premium data plan. It means that less people ran for the phone (which means I got one easy) and it means less people jamming the network with one, which leads to higher speeds for me lol... Sprint's always been good to me otherwise. I can eat the 7.70 a month I have to add on.

Speed alone is worth it. If that doesn't sell you I read somewhere a plan pricing comparison and Sprint with the +$10 plan is still cheaper than most services out there when it comes down to it.

The free sprint TV is crap, but the navigation seems very good!
But...Navigon will be releasing an android nav app this year, so that will make it useless, lol
Basically if you don't get 4G or don't need it...it's just an extra crap fee.

This is pure blind luck. When the Blackberry add-on was still sold by Sprint, not having it on the account was possible...but lead to a great deal of issues. Blackberry devices can and will check the web often. If you dind't get hit with data charges. Some people did. Some people's phones couldn't even make phonecalls without the pack.
And just for reference, the price of that add-on was set by RIM, NOT by Sprint.

Half true. There's no way to remove the feature as every Rep knows that it has to be there.
Of course if you do manage to find a way to remove the feature you'll end up paying MORE, so that's probably not in you r best interest!
Personally, I rarely use 4g. It has major penetration issues (know I'm going to hear more on that phrase!) but considering I'm at 1.3GB since the 27th of last month on this thing, odds are good I'll reach and/or exceed the 5gb cap that typiccally accompanies this kind of gear. $10 to allow me to use the phone as much as I want, in whatever way I want?

I don't see the big issue. I came from AT&T paying $250 a month. This is nothing to worry about.

you can get this phone on $70/month plan. google slickdeals, check their hotdeals foroums. it's there.

yeah, but you can get nav on the evo from google maps....
I think it's a ripoff to charge an extra $10 that most of the country can't access yet for some reason, people still pay it.

I originally was upset by the $10 surcharge, however, after using the Evo for a weekend I consume WAY more data on it than any other phone I've used. Its so hard not to. I almost prefer browsing on it compared to my laptop, YouTube is great, and Maps and Navigation on the big screen is a joy to use. Besides, Sprint's plans are still a hell of a lot better than the competition, even with the extra fee.

So is there a definitive answer whether the 3g is truly unlimited or is it only 4g? There seems to be conflicting answers everywhere.

Hack evo for free hotspot

Ok so I just got the evo and I'm I. Love I had a moment b4 this and the the pre and the moment was very disappointing but the evo defined did the trick for Mr any way I'm very new to this whole rooting and hacking so I don't kno to much info or where to go get the info I was wonder if there there was a way I could use the hotspot feature without paying 29.99 so if anyone has any info or can point me in the right direction that would be great thanks in advance

Sprint really doesn't bust users for pulling down hotspot quantity data-activity without paying the $30/mo Mobile Hotspot fee ?

I put 2.1 back on my friend's phone. Now he gets to use the sprint hotspot for free. For some reason he doesn't like free tether, but I do.

If you root then apply Calkulin's usb tether fix, it will also make the native Hotspot app work. The fix disables authentification for both wired and wireless tethering.
Personally, I think that the way these phones hog data out of the box that it would be hard for sprint accuse you of unauthrized tethering unless you were doing something like using the phone as your primary internrt connection.

I cancelled my comcast as soon as I got my evo. I've used it for XBOX live, webbrowsing during the day and leave it on to torrent over night. Sprint hasn't said anything to me.

You're absolutely right. I'm rooted, and CAN tether for free, but I pay the $29.99 anyway because it's the right thing to do. If you are using it for a lot of data (your main connection), you should pay for it.

Hahaha you should pay for it? Why because they tell you too? Hey simple man root your phone thru unrevoked(easy as hell) then use pdanet or caulkins method or flash a rom that has it already integrated.
Hey your paying an extra $10 for extra bandwith so use it. Why pay $40 more now to stream on your phone..hey AT&T is 15 a month for dsl a year...so it may be right but it ain't smart..... Also I believe unlimited bandwith is for aircards and not for wireless. There is a thread discussing that. At the end of the day too each his own....

P.S. I don't abuse or really use tethering but I don't see the problem. I don't use 90% of the internet based stuff on my phone but I pay the $10 and don't complain...

The reason I came to Sprint is because they allow it, and every rep I've talked to knows this. What good is the ability to push unlimited data (which, please, most people here can burn 11GB in a day, let alone a month) if you're morally restricted to limiting yourself to the competition's tiers anyways? Sprint's angle against the Big Two has been unlimited data for a long time now, and they're not going to switch it. If they do, I can promise you that the reason is NOT some guy using PDANet and watching a lot of streaming football while he's at work.

My 2 cents: our ten dollar a month 4g fee....covers truly unlimited data, at least that's how sprint justifies it. Even though I have used upwards of 9 gigs without ever touching tether. 10 or 15 is not that bad, imo.tiered plans are a scare tactic . Att feels the pain of that already. Hardcore users have started jumping ship now that they realize 2 gigs is nothing the more they use their phones.

You're right in that 2GB really is nothing nowadays. Sprint offers On Demand television, live sporting events, and devices with screens big enough to actually utilize these things; and when Netflix comes to Android, do they really think users will stay within 2-5GB?
Even without Netflix or tethering, Evo can burn through caps like noone's business on push alone. The phone was built and marketed as a multimedia powerhouse - stream HD, refresh your FriendStream every 15 minutes, push the news, get your email, upload huge photos from your 8MP cam, all within a few swipes.
It makes sense for Sprint to cap the non-premium data users, and just use that as an incentive to make $10/mo from that many more customers. But seriously, companies really should start focusing on making the network's capacities better - not limiting the consumer.

We aren't losing unlimited bandwidth. We pay extra for not having 4G in our areas aka a 'richer data experience'.

[How To] Save your unlimited data plan after tethering notice

I was using about 70-90 Gb data a month for the past few months, mostly because of tethering. I recieved the first warning, and then yesterday the final notice stating i WOULD be changed to 45$ 4Gb tethering plan next bill. Well i spent hours and hours calling back different times with different point. most being legality, and privacy issues. Nothing worked, UNTIL i got a very nice man who was describing tethering to me and how watching netflix on ur phone then attaching hdmi is still condisdered tethering. I told him i have CM7 and that it was a non-stock os, and that all i have been doing is watching netflix or hulu on my tv via the hdmi port and mirroring. he extended my cut off date to right after the conversation, so that as long as i did not tether after that (connect my phone to my tv, lamo!) i would no longer be switched. he gave me a third chance and i am very thankfull. if you do not get the response u want to hear, try, try again..generally with a different rep, but they HAVE HAVE HAVE to be in the tethering watch dept. i believe he said its called "EOS" dept. I also filled a complaint with the better business bureau, but im positive just a bluff would do the trick.
just remember, make sure you are speaking to the right department before you get all down and dirty into why you believe this is unjust, and use the TV excuse and dont ever tether again unless u wanna loose to AT&T

I have been using 40gb up to 70gb since i got my unlimited data back 2-3 months ago. Never gotten an notice. Been doing the same thing as you, plus using pdanet to use my computer and torrents.

Both of you abusing the system so to speak, and that's why the rest of us also have to pay the price. I can fully understand the OP getting notice, and for once actually agree with AT&T, except that I wouldn't have given you a third chance.
If you are using that much data tethering, I am more than happy to see them cut your data off completely!

It's like when you go to events and there's free products and the booth is. unoccupied and there's a sign that says one per person, you're the person who opens up a bag and takes more than their fair share.
it's a lack of courtesy, is what it basically is.
pdanet and torrenting? you're doing completely unnecessary stuff that you could do on your home computer with your home Internet without data cap worries.

I am happy when I see threads like this. People complain about AT&T having ****ty service, but it is out of their control when people are hogging 50-100 GB over a wireless connection. Wireless is shared bandwidth, unlike a wired connection, so the network performs worse for other users when somebody it using massive bandwidth.
Unlimited doesn't give you the right to abuse the network and make it worse for others. P2P is abuse, per AT&T's terms of use.

People certainly have the right to complain about AT&Ts new practices but 40-90 gb is overkill. Its hard to sympathize with you guys. I got the notice and I've only used 5gb of data.

Ya well 4G isn't 4G with them either. The point is that everybody else has to suffer by paying more, AND dealing with a more congested network.
Tethering was really meant for emergency purposes, or when the local coffee shop is closed and you need to be online browsing/checking email for a "short period of time"...

Unfortunately... when he walked up to the booth, it was occupied, and that person behind the counter sold him the 'unlimited service(products)' plan, we all know ATT doesn't offer free services(products in your analogy).. he's not paying for a limited(tiered) plan... now, if he takes more than the ones who are paying for a 'tiered' plan, he's entitled to it, he's paying for that 'unlimited' plan, not a limited one.. ya know.. just saying...
Now, with that said.. going crazy with it like there is no tomorrow, that is another arguement/story.. ...
And yes.. I do have the unlimited data plan as well.. I just don't go nuts with it..

That's the point people are making. I have unlimited also, but I don't abuse it by using my cell phone data plan as I do my high speed internet at home. Tethering isn't the issue, ludicrously high data usage is because it affects every user.

ha. yeah you're right in that aspecto. i was just trying to point out the blatant lack of consumer responsibility.
i, too, have unlimited data. i stream music, netflix, google navigation.
and i don't hit 5gb a month. I don't even typically hit 2GB. it's the people who constantly abuse the unlimited data plan so that are causing AT&T to imposed stricter and stricter regulations on their customers. Granted, there's greed thrown in there as well. but until every single one of us customers isn't doing anything irresponsible, then collectively we look like ignorant customers. i'd understand if all customers used 5gb and AT&T was behaving as they are now, then I, too, would be pissed.
your car tops out at 140mph. you don't drive it that fast all the time out of courtesy to others on the road and you just knowing you shouldn't. you can. but you shouldn't.

Sorry to burst your bubble about no data cap on home internet. I was issued a Notice that I exceeded my data usage cap with Cox Communications last month in San Diego (premier 25mbs/sec plan). I have 3 TVs all hooked up to either pandora, Netflix, Hulu +, or Playstation Network. (Normal computer web surfing as well).
But back on topic. The unlimited label should be removed as it borders on false advertisement.

Well sir im sorry for having something called work if you haven't heard of it yet. I do not have time do nothing else than sleep at home while working 16h shifts. That's why I do everything at work and they don't have wifi. Also if you haven't heard there is actually caps on home internet. Compacts has a 100-150gb cap and AT&T 300gb I think and its easy to go over it also. Trust me I have went over 350gb.

Trust me, if they did have wifi at your work, and you did that on a company network, you wouldn't be working there for long. Stop downloading illegal content. That's the only reason you are racking up that kind data usage.
If you meant Comcast when you said Compacts, they have a 250GB cap.

It's not a privacy issue when the data usage is provided by them. You expect them not to know how much data you use? Also, if you are referring to tethering, they don't have to do anything but look at the information you actually agree to providing them to determine packet usage. Without packet usage you can have no data, and TTL (Time To Live) is a timestamp embedded in all data. When you use their service you freely agree to them knowing this in order to provide said service, and thus give them the authority to see what you are doing regarding packet hops.

And I thought I was an ass just for using 6GB. OP, you're ruining it for all of us. But that's bull crap that AT&T considers mirroring and the like "tethering." Is it also considered tethering to use Google Music with your car?

I got the notice using my 5 GB a month tethering. To heck with AT&T! That being said, some of you guys are clearly abusing the system and deserve the consequences!

Heads up to HTC EVO 4G Wifi Tether people with sprint

I am friendishly warning you to NOT USE IT. It will void your contract and they will drop you. If you didnt know this before hand, you may want to stop. I love wifi tether but sadly it will end up getting me droped =/ Its in the sprint contract terms and what not

It's NOT illegal. Yes, it voids your contract, but as most people will tell you, you have unlimited data, they can't tell you how to use it.
And FYI, sprint can NOT tell if you are using wifi tether or not. To them, it just looks like regular data being used on the phone.

Yes that is correct. If your a constant 1gb user every month for like a year then jump to 10gb's they'll question that. Just don't go throwing up red flags and you'll be fine. There's been threads on here with ppl being dropped only cause in their words 'I'm gonna stick it to sprint' and they go and use 20+ gb's. And you wonder why sprint sends out the we're letting you go letter

As long as you don't abuse the tethering and rack up 10s of GBs of data consistently, Sprint could care less right now about whether or not people who choose to stick with them are tethering for free, as Sprint continues to lose customers.
Sprint is more concerned right now with how much data is going over the air than how people are sending it, because too much data over the air slows service to everyone.
There have been more people who have had their contracts cancelled who were paying the $30 dollars per month, but racking up enormous amounts of data (more than 10GB consistently) than people who do not pay the $30 dollars, but use tether more sparingly. In fact, there are many users right here on this site who have tethered for a long time, who Sprint has never done or said anything to.

I was about to say,i've been using my tether for over 6 months and i've never been repremanded for it,from sprint.

tethering is to risky imo.. sprint is unpredictable

Speeding is illegal too, doesn't mean I won't do it on the way home. I figure Sprint told me, that my phone would connect to their advanced 4G network, as they would eventually cover most areas with it and yet now my phone will never be usable on their 4G if they get disgruntled about my tether then they let me go to VZW

If you read the terms and conditions, racking up enormous amounts of data (whether you are paying for tethering or not), as well as tethering for free are both violations of your contract. Well they probably would drop you if you had like 50gigs+ every month and the only way you could do that is downloading major porn or like downloading world of warcraft 3 or 4 times lol

I've been tethering since we had what seemed like a 20 step rooting sequence using adb commands. In other words ancient history in terms of the Evo. They've never given any indication of caring, but I only tether when I need to. I've downloaded torrent sized files, but never very often. I probably use more data flashing roms from my dropbox than I ever have by tethering.

I wonder if the can supposedly glean this info from CIQ. They do take user stats and most likely apps stats.

I personally don't use the tethering all that much. I find that it decreases my battery life by like 726237x. And I don't know about you guys, but I don't bring my phone charger with me everywhere. So.

My 3G speed is honestly making me think about switching to VZW, even though I wont get unlimited data. I can literally only pull 24 kB/s down (yes, 193 kbps - TERRIBLE) during the day. At night (1am+) I can pull about 1000 kbps.
I used to be able to get way better speeds, but over the last month or two it has literally come to a crawl. I only use Wifi on my evo now, i can barely use the market on 3g. I attribute this to the recent S2 and iPhone 4s. It's probably also related to my area, Southern Cali. Very populated and probably too much traffic (no 4g either... stupid.)

try boosting your 3g. theres a thread somewhere to do it.. it like calibrates your 3g to the best it can do

Tried searching around, no such luck for this thread. All I've come across is a some other users getting speeds just as bad as me.
Can't believe I'm paying the $10 dollar data fee per month, I could probably get a better connection from dialup.

This is probably what everyone gets because of those hacking their wifi tether and thinking it's okay to use their cell phone as their home ISP. :good:.
Apparently they've always reserved the right to do this in their TOS, but are just recently starting to enforce it due to heavy abuse.

Apparently this is affecting everyone, even on the "truly unlimited plans". One person reported a phone rep trying to sell him a 21GB data plan.

People always abuse there data I get your paying for unlimited but nothing in this world is what it seems. I've heard of people using even 500GB of data almost even a terrabite dude. Like WHOA! Who uses that much data? Guess people who don't want to pay for WIFI. It does affect all of us. All that traffic by one individual now imagine thousands. I'm glad they are cracking down on this.

And I'll be the first to admit I have bypassed the tether allowance, but not for use as my main ISP. I've done it to send a few work emails and what not when I'm away from the office. I don't think I've ever gone past 50GB.

Problem is the same as Verizon. They punish those who are just using the unlimited service on their phone by using it as a phone as well.
The whole punish everyone thing seems to be popular anymore.

I've never passed 20 gb on my plan on the 2 years that I have tmobile. Even when I was tethering when I didn't have WiFi. Be a nice civilian and let us eat! Lol sometimes my speeds are not even 1MG and people with 60mbps I'm sure are the ones that do it the most. Lol..I'm just saying people.

i get why they are doing it but they also mentioned the top 3% of heavy data users. Last time i checked i used 31gigs this month and I have not been throttled yet. Ive seen as far as 60 gigs. I admit, i do download stuff time to time but i never watch tv. I stream all my music while at the gym, i stream netflix/other media apps to my chromecast when at home so yeah, i do use a lot of data. What i dont do is mess with my tethering. I have wifi at home. If i were to be throttled, i would pitch a fit as i would think this isnt fair to discipline a user for using a lot of data when they pay for unlimited.

Dude you pay for unlimited of course your going to use what you pay for lol. I also pay for unlimited(extra $20 a month) and if my speeds where actually good I'll probably be at 25 to 30 GB of data lol but I have WiFi at home.

I watch maybe 40 hours a month of Netflix at work. Take a guess what that adds up too. I don't have a WiFi network off an ISP at work.

The throttle "improper" usage. I think it's a good thinG because too many people abuse it.

Haven't seen a problem.
I did 50GB last month. Currently at 20gb or so. We have 3 lines unlimited Data on Family Plan.

I'm unlimited and rarely use 10 gigs. Just pay for the moments when a WiFi isn't around. I've tethered maybe 500mbs a month, don't see a problem with that. Those using huge amounts for their home should be throttled.

I don't think they're throttling people who are using a ton via legitimate means.
The note did say they will throttle those who are using massive amounts of data via means that are in violation of the terms and conditions of use.
People using hacks to get around tethering limits are one of them.

Nor do I but they might be, at&t did but then again at&t are a bunch of worthless ass hats

Did 132gb last month legit + illegit. No problems there. I did see the hotspot screen a few times but that was it. Don't intend to keep it this much though

Tmobile signal in my area took a dump, called and complained mainly because my signal at work disapeared completely and HSPA+ is non existant around work, only LTE and edge, but LTE signal sucks for going into buildings.
Called Tmobile and they tried to blame my data usage for it....lol.
Was their "advanced repair" and they seem to have 0 idea how it works...*sigh*
