What's the big deal with Flash anyway? - Xoom General

I mean..c'mon...is it really that important?
Or does everyone want Flash support soley because you can't have Flash on an iPad?
(aka the Neener Neener Neener Factor?) ("N3F" for short)
Like it or not, there are more iPads in the hands of consumers than there are any other type of tablet device.
An article from January 19 says that Apple sold nearly 15 million iPads in 2010.
That is 15 million mostly non-geeky people
(people who you would think NEED Flash more than your average geek on XDA).
Yet they are all okay with not having Flash.
Before having Flash, I would rather have a streaming NetFlix app, a good DLNA/uPnP app and since I'm on a mini-rant, I would like a really good video player.
The best I've tried so far is Act1...but it's still lacking in a few areas.

It's more a principle thing. First, you buy the device that is supposed to be flash enabled. It was not so waiting #1. Second, Adobe apparently announced the release of flash for today. So far, nothing again; waiting #2. If I buy a banana split with cream then I want my cream whether it's necessary or not
And c'mon, do you really really really have to drag the iPad vs. Xoom discussion in here again? I couldn't care less if other devices support flash or not. That doesn't make me feel better or worse. I only care about the Xoom.

My primary purpose for the tablet is email and web. I have been running the leaked flash since it came out. You get a smoother web experience with flash, in my opinion and use, because it seems to be everywhere. I don't want to have to open other apps or click other links for popups to get what should be there any way. I don't really follow the "I don't get all the flash adds" with my iPad. If it is an issue just turn the extension to "on demand". I like sitting down reading a web page and seeing the video link and then just clicking it to watch it. I don't like adding steps to a device I want to remove steps.
Is flash the ultimate solution? Doesn't appear to be, however until it is phased out to sites I visit daily then I need a tablet that can use it. I really tried to take back the Xoom and get an iPad 2, but it just won't do everything I want.
Flash is not a big deal to everyone, as not everyone buys a tablet for the same reason.

I agree totally, I mean I like knowing I have flash handy, but I don't wake up in the morning mourning the absence of flash, its more like " hey dude u wanna see the ultimate facepalm? Check it out" apart from those vids, I can't really say flash is a major part of the tablet experience... that's my view anyway

I wouldn't say they (Ipad owners) are OK with it they don't have a choice. Its like living communist china. You live there because you don't have a choice not because you want to. How many downloads do you think flash for IPad would have the first day?
Anyway I'm kinda with you its not really that important but it is something thats nice to have. I'm just board waiting for 5pm so I can start smoking and drinking #winning.

Don't use it. Jeez. You don't even have to install the application. Who cares if 15 million people don't need Flash? If I wan't Flash I'll install Flash and I will use Flash. The iPad uses HTML5 as well, which can also be utilized Android. We have the best of both worlds... and until Flash is phased out of the internet, when it is needed, it will be used.
Was this thread made to show how advertising Flash as an amazing feature is stupid?
Was this thread made to show your own hate for Flash?
Was this thread made to prove that Flash isn't needed?
Was this thread made to "bash" Android fans who bash the fact that the iPad lacks Flash?
... or could it have even been to show that the iPad is selling millions and we should all be envious haters?
Really, if you don't get the point of Flash, and you don't like Flash -- just don't use the thing.

Well I already have porn I mean flash on my phone. Also I think if you don't like porn you are either really old or well I don't want to call you names its against the rules.

So the end of this thread is flash is cool to have, let's be honest, having more is good and that's what is provides for us android users, more freedom

If I want to watch porn I'll do it on the big screen. Also, there's always Skyfire that has a flash alternative... but I shouldn't give the "kiddies" too many bad ideas!

somehow flash isn't important on the day of the iPad1 release?
i feel like some people were born yesterday.
hi OP, you must be new to the internet.

That's kind of a dumb question. Actually it is a very dumb question. Maybe you live under a rock?
Most websites are built around flash. Without the flash player you would not get a nice browsing experience like the website designer wanted you to have. Yeah yeah.. ads this... ads that. It's called set the flash player to on demand. You can activate it when you need it, so you are in control. Isn't that what being an Android user is all about? Being in control of your device.
It's like 2D vs. 3D. There is quite a difference between the two, just like there is with being able to use flash on websites. Yes, one can go without the flash player (Apple products), or one could enjoy the browsing experience like it was meant to be. Technology is advancing, and its here to make life easier and more enjoyable, especially in the handheld mobile department. It's awesome to be able to go to fox.com and watch full episodes of the Sunday shows on demand on my Xoom whenever I feel like it. Or any other website with tv shows like that. Apple/iPad will NEVER have that kind of desktop user experience... EVER!!!
Hands down.

My reply stands solid regardless of the comment about Apple products. Why people skip the whole point and focus on something else is beyond me. That was extra, not the main point. Geez.
I doubt Apple and Adobe will ever be on the same page. If they do, so what? By then Flash will be old news to the mobile world. Everyone will have it already in all shapes and forms, whether its the lite or the full version. In short.. no one will give a crap by that time because every OS will have already been with Flash for the longest time.

Set your UA String to desktop and check out many websites in all their glory, it's pretty cool . ESPN, Yahoo, ABC, CBS, etc... It's just cool having the FULL web at your fingertips.
Also, some business websites require flash and that is why some people NEED it.

My look at it.
is flash god's gift? No it is not
is flash a good system? not really
ok.. I get it.. but here's the problem, there are lots of sites out there that use flash, benefit from it, and use it poorly and some use it pretty well
I WANT the option, I had an iphone for a while, and I remember looking for an address to a diner, or a menu for example, or just a lot of things, and it just did not work! it was stupid! now on my Captivate I get the option, yes its a little slow and sluggish, but i can at least get my info that I want.
long story short, I dont care for it too much, but this is the internet and even if we dont like things, with Jobs telling me that I can't have flash, tells me that I cant use the internet to the fullest potential.
I just hope that HTML5 kills Flash, but untill then, I need it.

OP.... yes I don't think flash is that big of a deal either.
Also, the 'iPad' sold a bunch of units in 2010. Guess what? Its 2011! The only thing available back then was the ipad. Now we have the xoom. Which is way better! Lol.

This is a TERRIBLE thing.
Flash should be boycotted.
Its only effect is to hinder the advancement of open web standards and keep us locked in 90's type content.
Flash appeared in 1996 to take advantage of missing web functionality and provide more interactivity (not to play videos). Nowadays, it doesn't actually provide anything useful -- videos can be played by MEDIA plugins and don't need to be flash-packaged. Interactivity can be provided by TONS of different mechanisms. There is NO USE for flash.
The only reason why ANYONE still uses it is because certain websites are TOO STUPID to ditch it! I.e., they got used to using it when it *was* useful, and never bothered to learn the RIGHT WAY to do things when it became possible to ditch it!
I VERY VERY STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT use flash plugins. LET FLASH DIE!!!

I think that is pretty much along the same thing that Steve Jobs said about not implementing Flash to iPhone/iPad/iTouch devices. Although I agree with it but like you said yourself there are so many websites that won't ditch it. When something better comes around (not saying that there isn't already) then I'm sure that they will look forward to that as well. Until then... I want HULU!
Plus, I know that Netflix is wanting to implement their movie streaming services to Android sometime soon too! Can't wait!
I will be notified when its up

LOL. Calm down. I do agree with you that flash slows down web browsing with ads but that is why I downloaded AdFree from the market. HTML-5 is slowing taking over and Android 2.0+ is compatible with that already (or just need a simple plug-in). Anyway, we can use our phones to enjoy the FULL internet experience.
Signed up and ready!
And flash can die when I can have the ENTIRE web experience given to me by something else.

It's like mp3. It's an awful lossy format that sounds terrible, yet, because it's so small everyone uses it, despite the fact formats such as OGGVORBIS give much better sound quality in a smaller file. Also, it's completely open source, which is always nice

YOU are missing the point. This ISNT ABOUT distributing. This is about USING. MP3 encoders and decoders are available, FOR FREE. *ANYONE* can use it. Distributing commercial content in that format is subject to licensing fees. So what?
The point is that ADOBE is TERRIBLE at supporting their product -- flash. They took the better part of a DECADE TO SUPPORT AMD64, and that is only on linux.
Their software is terrible and buggy.
Only a MINORITY of web users are *ABLE* to use flash content (whether due to use of a platform adobe doesn't support, or due to DEFECTS in flash plugin).
It is also a HORRIBLE resource hog!
And to top it all off, there is NO REASON to use it! Everything it does can be done BETTER with things that are STANDARD. And FYI: These standard things actually WORK and use VERY LITTLE RESOURCES.
So please explain HOW it is to anyone's benefit to keep using this CRAP!
To kill it requires that EVERYBODY DOES NOT USE IT. Already right now MOST PEOPLE do NOT USE IT.
The more people do NOT use flash, the more web developers will realize that they are shooting themselves in the foot by using it!
If developers use the SUPERIOR ALTERNATIVES, then those sites will work for EVERYBODY, and flash will finally die.
Which means that people won't need to wait for adobe to support new platforms (without exception, this takes YEARS), or fix bugs (again, typically takes YEARS).
Also realize this: flash sites ***ARE VANISHING***. I can't think of ONE SINGLE SITE that still requires flash, except for youtube -- and it is going to vanish from there very soon... as soon as they decide on the appropriate video format (going to be ON8, theora, or h264).
Flash runs amazingly for me, until something better can do everything it does and better, Ill keep using it.
End of story.

So you're saying that only YouTube uses Flash? Are you on crack?
One word... PORN. There are millions of sites out there that uses Flash based content too.
Then there are other sites such as Hulu. Huge site that is generating revenue off of their adds and soon as a paid membership service.
There are streaming sites like local news stations that deliver real time content to your hands.
Then there are Flash games as well.
Many cell phones are beginning to support Flash content because it is so common on websites. The more people that stare at their cell phones the more hooked they are on the service that their cellular company provides. Which mean more customers, more money, more profit. Notice that many of the phones these days are getting thinner but the screens are getting wider? Do you think it's because people just want to have a nice bright 4" screen on their hip or in their pocket? People use these new devices for multimedia and web browsing and not just for texting and making phone calls. Web browsing isn't complete if you can only browse wap and mobile friendly web pages. Flash is also a smaller file that is easy to stream... which is cheaper for cellular providers. Sure they may have to upgrade their network for the 34,000,000 subscribers that are watching last nights episode of Lost on their phones (hypothetical)... but they are investing in all of that anyway. Why do you suppose that is? For situations such as this. Should Flash disappear it would be an awful waste of research, development, sales and technology. Yes, there are alternatives... but are they more convenient than what we already have in place that works? If it's not broke, don't fix it. If Flash was going to become obsolete it'll more than likely be replaced by mp4. I can see your point of view but I can see how this multimedia evolution is progressing.

Wtf are you having a go at me for? i agree with you.
My point was, that like flash, there are better audio formats available that can do the job much better than mp3s, but because the majority of people don't really care and are not very knowledgeable on the subject, they see no reason to change. It's the same with flash. They don't know that there are any alternatives and, so they see no point in using anything different.
For developers, flash may not be the best thing to use, but EVERYONE has heard of it. From a marketing point of view, it's best to use a brand that you have heard of than one you haven't.
Why are you actually getting so worked up about this? You seem to be the ONLY person who actually cares, and next time, please actually READ my posts before you have a massive rant at me when i actually ****ing agree with you.
Also, only a minority of web users can use Flash? wtf? I'd quite confidently say the majority of web users are either on Windows or on a Mac. Both of which have fantastic flash support.
Flash won't be replaced till there is something to replace it with. Please don't say HTML 5 cause thats a complete joke. As hulu just said in a press release. HTML is nice and cool but for our statistics and our video quality HTML 5 is many years behind flash. Just take a look at youtube and thier HTML5 experment. With the power and money of google behind them their HTML5 site looks like crap compared to their flash site.
Also HTML 5 severly lacks in vector graphics which was the main selling point about flash for years. Then take into account cross platform bugs and development and HTML 5 is just gonna be a flashy form of HTML 4. Flash is so powerfull it will always have a home. Hell now you can make iphone and ipad apps with it, even after Stevo gave the no no.

Huh? You seem to be SERIOUSLY CONFUSED.
Multi-platform support has ALWAYS been one of the MANY MANY SERIOUS weaknesses of flash. They take YEARS TOO LONG to support new platforms -- if EVER (see apple). Now you're REALLY dreaming.
Flash is NOT powerful. It is WEAK. It is SLOW. It is UGLY. It brings about INCOMPATIBILITY. It never did ANYTHING useful for ANYBODY. The ONLY reason why anyone uses it now (or has EVER used it) is because they don't/didn't know any better.

Give me some reasons why I should get a Xoom and trade my iPad 2

I want to hear from Xoom users some advantages on getting the Xoom. I currently have an iPad 2 and it's cool but there is no JB for it yet. I saw some articles on Google IO today and was amazed at the USB host support which would make it awesome for emulators.
What are some advantages you guys think would be? I currently own an Evo so I'm familiar with Android. I'm more interested in knowing the cool things you can do with it. I found someone in CL who is interested in trading his Xoom for my iPad 2. Thanks.
Reason #1, it gets you away from Kool-Aide drinking mac-bots who think everything has to be white.
Anyone else have a constructive response?

Those of us who show our loyalty to google will be rewarded with land and women once the takeover is complete.
Additionally, flash is neat, USB hosting, I'm fairly siked about google music. Greater customization. I'd wait to see how 3.1 runs but it looks very promising in the dev notes.
you are not bound to itunes, you can customize your UI, your notifications wont interrupt you, its positioned to be compatible with a ****load of other devices, hdmi ready, amazon and sony love android

How is that not contructive? Apple confines you to their standards. Time to open up and do what the user wants to do....Coca-cola taste a ton better than Kool-Aide
Best advice I can give you is just read the reviews and see if you like it. Seriously read up.

dunno why you need convincing ... just check out the features and play with one at a best buy.
Is Google Body available for the Xoom? I'm interested in that. I'll still have my 1st gen iPad so I don't mind trading it in. Are their any cool things you can do with it like connecting bluetooth devices, etc?
One thing I hate about the iPad 2 is the camera. I took a picture of my daughter up close and it was so blurry I thought she was a UFO. I think it's rated at under 1MP.

I played with one at Best Buy but it was molested beyond recognition. There was so much stuff scattered all over the screen I didn't have the patience to look through it. I wanted input from someone who owns it and has played with it for over a month.
Are the apps catching up? What I mean by this is are there a lot of tablet apps out yet or just phone apps.

see, something you could have easily checked online Google Body is one of the "made for Honeycomb" apps. It was released along with the XOOM.

Plenty of tablet apps and "tegra HD" apps available.
Also, pretty much every app I've tried that didn't specify Honeycomb support worked anyways. the "HD" games are spectacular (youtube "pinball HD honeycomb" ... it's 2.99 USD (2.84 CDN haha) and it rocks.
multitasking, much better webexperience than safari, flash support

Starting a thread like this is just to fan the flames of fanboyism. Don't come on this forum and try to stoke fires. Go try them out and make your own decisions.
I actually purchased the Ipad 2 and received it about 2 weeks ago. It took me less than a week to call Apple and request and return package. I then went into Best buy and purchased a Xoom.
Here are the reasons why:
- FLASH: I watch videos online all the time, and most of them are sites that use flash
- Being able to just download a mp3, an image, or even videos right from the browser and save it wherever I want to
- Being able to open the downloaded file with the app I want
- Being able to connect my Xoom to my PC at work and transfer whatever file I want
- Being able to customize my homescreen to my liking
- Notifications
- Widgets (I just hated that fact that I always had to go to the settings to activate bluetooth or wi-fi for example
- Now with Honeycomb 3.1 announced, I'm really not regretting buying the Xoom

Thanks. I'm going to pull the trigger and do the trade. I still have an iPad 1st gen so I can fall back on the apps I love like Netflix. Hopefully they hack other OS's on the Xoom like Linux. Thanks for all the positive responses from the few of you who weren't just looking to increase your post count.

In short, it's not quite a slick as the iPad 2 and there are nowhere near enough tablet specific apps, but imo the browser is better, it's more customizable, google maps is far better as is the multi-tasking. But you should know that HD videos will require re-encoding due to the Tegra2 chip and it's limitations.
I think the biggest reason you have already mentioned in your post.
Jail-break.
iPad2 is a Jail. It needs to be broken.
I used to be an iPhone user (3GS and 4G).
I am sick of being told you should do things this way and if you don't , you are screwed.
Xoom and all other android device brings me "freedom" in what I OWN.
Specifically in terms of functions
0. Flash
1. You get much better camera (5mp back, 2mp front facing)
2. You have the rights to root it, install customized roms/themes
3. You can install third party apps freely.
4. You can flash kernels to overclock your CPU to 1.5Ghz while iPad 2 is stuck at 1G max
5. You have strong Dev community to create stuff. as long as there is a need. Apparently it requires certain level of computer proficiency but from what you mentioned, you definitely have it.
6. You have google rolling out more and more exciting updates and with an open source concept, the market share of Android will bypass iOS by much and developer community will definitely notice this part of the market and create apps (commercial apps) around it.
7. many apps you know what is going on because you can see source code.
8. To someone who may worry that iPad apps are more than Honeycomb apps, I think at the current rate of brining new apps to platform, it wont be a problem a few months later at all.
9. Oh, you can install and dual boot Ubuntu in it.

Introduce myself

I hope it was suppose to be a joke.
I'm not looking at promoting myself. Was just telling people about myself. It's a hardware enthusiast community and hardware reviews. It's MUCH smaller than XDA.
I wanted to drop by here to learn a bit more about the Xoom's and the Honeycomb OS. I'm a pretty hardcore PC guy, but have always leaned towards Apple and their offerings when it came to Tablets, and phones. (Man I'm going to get a lot of flack for this) I picked up the Xoom, and I am pretty happy with it so far.
xcpus.com one of the most reputable sites on extreme overclocking, show some repect oomskaap, maybe you can learn something.
@Michael, welcome bro, I'm from OCF and there is quite a lot of exciting stuff here, look under the Xoom development section for unlocking/rooting procedure as well as some custom kernals
>xcpus.com one of the most reputable sites on extreme overclocking
Nitrogen-cooled Xoom, when?
Welcome bro.
Get SyncSMS in the themes and apps section under Xoom.
Get Dropbox
Get Zinio
Get Emulators
Etc.
Nice website, I'm liquid cooling fan myself, will keep track of your site for my next upgrade.
Back to the Xoom, I use my mainly as media consumption device.
Pluse, News 360 for news.
Plex for stream video from pc, much easier than converting and storing them on the device.
DoggCatcher for audio and video pod casts.
Thumb keyboard (make typing much easier).
Folder Organizer (nice folder creation).
Data counter widget keep track of your 3G and WIFI usage.
If you tell us your interest, we can offer better suggestions.

whose to blame? question

I have a question that I wonder any of the pros of this site can answer. whose fault is it that web browsing on android is starting to suck? is it android or the carriers? my example go to a pc and type Plentyoffish.com then do the same on an android phone and see the difference. same goes for the msn home page. your forced to go to the so called gay extreme page. to me the whole reason for getting android in the beginning was to browse the web while on the go as I would on my pc. some of you might say oh well web browsing isnt the only reason for an adroid phone. open source blah blah blah, apps blah blah blah. those are kinda of lame excuses. you can easily hack an iphone. and the iphone has more apps. originally android had a better browser but not any more. there are a few roms that still have the good browser. but most dont. who is to blame for the crappy ness? im starting to think my next phone may be an iphone. if I'm forced to use a crappy web browser it might as well be on a phone that has more apps. can anyone answer this question please
Not really sure what your talking about. If you mean you don't like the mobile view that can easily be changed to desktop view. It also depends on the type of coverage you have in your area.

1) you would get alot more replies and feedback if you were to sound a tad more mature. To be frank about it you sound like an 8 year old who just got a phone from mommy and daddy.
2) to answer your question. a PC, regardless of Mac, Windows or Linux, has alot more RAM then these phones do. So the PC can process the information a-lot faster.
3a) Do not blame us, nor your phone for your ability to not search for the answers you are inquiring.
3b) if you go to your address bar and type about:debug you can change the flags so your phone will register as desktop and you will get the full browsing experience.
3c) you can load a 3rd party ROM and have that set as a default. I never look a "mobi.[page_name].com" address.
3d) you can always use a 3rd party browser. Firefox, Skyfire, Bolt, Dolphin HD all support full HTML browsing.
4) if you want an iPhone, don't make a threat. Just do it. We won't stop you. Just keep in mind news reporters in North Korea have more freedoms than iOS users.

1) your calling me immature after resorting to name calling when you don't know me or know nothing about me, i believe you said I was acting like a kid who just got a new phone from his mommy and daddy. to which my response would be, your acting like a douche bag who insults people when he could just as easily ignore my question.
2) secondly don't tell me about pc and mac vs mobile devices. that just proves you don't know me A hole ( and I only say that because I feel like you insulted/condescended to me first) I know pc's and mac's have more memory and processing power. did you know that full web browsing including flash was once natively possible on android. now at days you have to either root your device and install a specific rom (something a lot of people cant do) or install a 3rd party that sometimes doesn't work well depending on the specs of your phone
3) don't blame you? you have a mighty opinion of yourself don't you. I don't even know you other then the fact that you like to respond to peoples post in a condescending manner without first trying to understand the question that was asked. and B, don't blame my phone? ugh... I know my phone isn't a real person. do you? lastly if you took the time to read my question it says whose to blame android or the service providers, not the phone or xda
lastly I wasn't making a threat, threat? who would it even be aimed to. I know about 3rd browsers I know about roms. these are not things developers and app makers should have to FIX! they should be standard! and in fact, they originally where. but there not anymore. so once again! my question is who is to blame. is android purposely hindering their browsers by mistake are the cellular providers redirecting our browsers to inferior mobile pages so people using their phones do not use up all of their service providers 3g/4g connections speeds. what is so hard to understand about the question. when buying a smart phone they force you to get a data package. then when you try to look at sites like, ebaumsworld or what ever you can't because your first to go to stupid mobile pages that don't even have flash videos. what is the point in having flash. what is the point of android if not the web browsing? fixing the mistakes and limitations of the platform? thats like going to a junk yard and paying the same price for a broken car that you would a new because when you fix the new car you can customize it any way you want. does that really make sense to you? i like android but I don't think its beyond criticism. no matter how good something is it can always be better. when you stop innovating you become stagnant

I sense a mod intervention or a flame war in the making.... But android has become more polished and shiny (sense...gross) due to user demand. neidlinger answered your question in a basic, easy to understand level at first until YOU decided to get mad for no apparent reason? If it seemed condescending you could state that politely and not fuel the fire or PM him. This has all been ridiculous. Your question was a valid android based question atleast and was answered on a lower level because frankly, lower post count thanks meter, grammar etc. Govern the response of the person trying to help you. If there was confusion on how the answer was given you should've asked, I'm not a mod but I'm just saying what should've been done.

On topic.
So on what ROM, including stock, can you not surf the net like a desktop? I have tried every ROM this forum, and a few others, have produced, and EVERY single one had fully featured web browsing. Mobile view is set to default because not everyone has large data plans, and some don't have data plans at all. It's a safety net, not some evil plan to ruin your experience. Not all smartphones are capable of the full experience, but all smartphones are capable of mobile view. It's just smart for android to default to it. I have yet to come across a browser on any ROM (nothing 3rd party) that didn't have a setting to change the UA string to desktop.
And on a personal note, sometimes I prefer mobile view. It's a lot easier for me to read news articles and do other basic browsing, so it guess it comes down to a matter of opinion.

Kindle Fire from a parents perspective

I have a Fire in the closet in the Amazon gift wrap which I originally purchased for my 10 yr old. She is pretty responsible so far but she is very very private and is not very open to talk about much, fairly introverted, heavy reader and artist.
So with the latest update still not providing any parental controls over content....yes I know I can use my router to filter traffic for the browser but I can't filter Amazon content. I can lock her out from making the purchase in the latest update I see.
At any rate, I am an avid phone tweaker and am pleased to see CM and ICS is well underway for the Fire.
My question is, is there any type of controls planned or built into the current custom roms or through third party apps? Would I be better off putting CM or ICS on it and using the Google Books and other apps for content? Or do you think I am better off letting her use it out of the box? She's 10 yrs old so she doesn't care about browser performance or quadrant scores.
I am wondering which will provide the best experience while giving me the most control over the use and content available on the device?

As a parent myself my main concern would be control over purchases, as far as censoring content I'm a firm believer in letting children explore their curiosities and interests without a whole lot of intervention on my part aside from the open invitation that they can talk about anything at anytime. There are apps available that would allow you to lock out apps of your choosing, I'm sure if you do a search on the market you would find something suitable to your needs. As far as custom roms vs. amazons rom I don't personally think either one would be better than the other for this purpose. Hope I helped you in some way and I apologize if I didn't.

As far as custom roms vs. amazons rom I don't personally think either one would be better than the other for this purpose. Hope I helped you in some way and I apologize if I didn't.

Black anything with black men. Don't want her turning in to Dakota Fanning in The Secret Life of Bees movie.

I have 3 kids. I am not censoring them, thats imho not necessary. My parental control is that i have personal look to what they are doing and i think its better to do that personally instead of using censorship programs.
Because my kids know how to workaround any censorship software anyway, they are not stupid. But basically they are not interested in stuff that will be censored anyway.
Typical american censorship anyway is very stupid. Not to allow porn stuff but to allow brutality and murdering and killing people is pretty much pathetic.
So i better stick on talking with my kids about what they are watching, if i find something where i should be concerned.

so the reality is i cannot sit on top of my kid all the time nor do i desire to, i do follow up and leave things always open, i am not looking for a passive parenting tool, nor do i really give a damn what anyone else thinks about my methods. I do not believe in censorship. I also don't think it is appropriate to put something in a 10 yr olds hands that has access to absolutely anything the internet has to offer. To me that is a bit of apathetic complacency....."they aren't interested in that stuff". Fine, if they aren't they won't miss it anyways then. Exactly what positive could possibly come from them having access to everything out there at 10 years old? Life is really long and serious, there is plenty of time to learn about the world, in due time, no need to accidentally learn about Big Black ***** go to Vegas #18 at age 10.
So my question remains, which rom would you choose? The official Amazon OS with only access to the Amazon market and content and being subject to whatever Amazon pushes my way, or the CM/ICS experience that gives me complete control, access to the official android market, and no restrictions on what browser, etc....can be used.

There is no kid version... You are asking for complete control from someone who might possibly end up knowing more about the device than you do. Kids have something that parents dont.... lots of time.
You might get more capabilities with a non-Kindle Rom, but I don't think you are going to find what you are looking for.
10yo is a bit young to have that type of unfettered access... I know what I would have done with it when I was that age.
My two kids are grown up, but they would have been okay with it. I know other kids that other family members have where there is NO WAY I would give them a device like that at that age or even much older.
I would say filter at home through the router. Asfor content and filtering, i thimk the stock rom is best.

well i got my girls, I have two, a netbook which we let them use, in the family room, with us around. we aren't looking over their shoulder.....but there's something about being in the same room with the parents that makes an impression. They are not allowed to take the netbook to their bedroom. They are not allowed to have cable tv on their tv either. They are lucky to have a tv in their bedroom with a dvd player, neither my wife nor I did. Hell we didn't even have a Nintendo.....
we aren't even religious....just trying to be good parents, let them have room as they get older, but i am not going to just give a 7 and 10 yr old complete access to the internet
i was actually thinking about swapping it out for one of the lesser Kindles without browser and such
I was really hoping maybe there existed a "Kidzui" for Android type of rom or app.
