Tethering??? - Xoom General

I bought my Xoom before I found out they were coming out with the wifi only xoom, and i was planning on using it wifi only anyway. My problem is when i tether from my cell to my Xoom i feel like I'm on a 13k modem, its incredibly slow... I'm using my rooted Galaxy S on AT&T for the tether, with the stock tethering app. First is there a better tethering app I can try?
If not I'm thinking of getting the wifi package from verizon, but will they give me the money back for signing up for a 2 year plan... I paid $800 and they sell for $600 if you by the contract.
If they wont give the credit I can just return it and re-buy it with the contract, but are they going to charge me the $70 return fee?
Or should I return it pay the $70 and then buy the wifi only? this is only an option if i can get the tethering to work at a decent speed.... I really dont want to return it as I have all my apps and email and stuff all set up, does anyone know if verizon is planning on offering rebates for people who paid full price to just use wifi?

The tetherig does seem slow. I'm using my evo with 4g in philadelphia where I usually get good speeds on my phone but my xoom crawls loading pages.
As far as the return policy at verizon....14 days, $70 restocking fee regardless of store credit or refund.

What tethering app are you using? I am using Myn's 2.2 on my rooted EVO with the unlocked Sprint Hotspot and my xoom loads pages pretty quickly.

Yes that sprint app works flawlessly, I use to use wireless tether by google but god the spfiy app is faster on 3g than that google app on 4g lol

Same here
Myn 2.2 with 4g
The other day I did gchat video and it worked just like on wifi.
I use Wi-Fi tether exclusively to tether my laptop at work cuz it's faster than our Wi-Fi. One thing that's cool is that I stand it up with the kick stand and that keeps the back really cool.

bluetooth
I have gotten better and more consistent speed using the native bluetooth tether with my droidx, plus I don't have to hassle with even taking out my phone. I have heard that the bluetooth seems to be problematic for some, but for me it works way better than tether apps.

Mobile Hotspot

So I'm going to be getting an Epic 4g soon and one of the big features that enticed me was the mobile hotspot. My college doesn't have school wide wifi which is a huge pain in the ass so this feature would make things a hell of a lot easier. Now I see that you have to pay $30 for the feature. My dad is the one that pays the bill and he still uses and instinct so I doubt he would want to pay an extra 30 bucks a month and quite frankly, I wouldn't either. I've heard that there are apps on the market that allow you to wireless tether without paying the extra fee. Could someone tell me if this is true and if so, could someone explain them to me? Thanks in advance.
Root your epic and use the free wireless tether app. I was able to do it by following instructions on this site. Runs like a champ and I'm saving $30/mo.

motorola xoom upgrades!

hey i will be getting a xoom very soon from usa...i am from canada! so i was wondering would i be getting ota updates? or do i need to be on varizons network? to get the updates? thanks
no, you do not need to have a verizon wireless account to get updates.
OTA (over the air) updates can be made via WiFi or 3G/4G.
In essence, as long as you have an internet connection.
Weird? Why didn't you just wait for the wifi only version. You've just paid $200 for a chip you're not going to need. Well except when you travel down here

no i am actually getting it from craigslist and its a pretty good deal for a brand new xoom!! the wifi one after taxs and dute fee will cost me the same maybe lil more!!:d
S'all good I'm in the same boat up in Vancouver and I'm the ultimate early adopter... I paid a guy 100 bucks to pre order and ship same day... I paid 1000$ for mine and I make love to it every night. Got my update no problem

I live in Canada and bought mine from the states ($600 from Moto's site) and my Xoom recieved an OTA update when I first turned it on. You do not need a Verizon account or anything, just switch it to airplane mode and use it as a wifi only tablet.

[Q] Anyone personally been served a notice for Tethering or Excessive Bandwith Use?

I know we had a thread open, but no one definitively came forward to say they received the notification. I am wondering if anyone has personally been served a tethering notice for non iphone, android use, or for excessive bandwith usage on the unlimited plan which many of us have, or will have thanks to the Iphone2g loophole: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008698 for more info.
I use my Atrix to tether almost daily. A co-worked also uses my connection. I use about 4-5 gig per billing cycle and never got anything from ATT. This usage started with my iPhone and Netflix. I can't wait until it is available on the Market. Until then I want to use about the same so there are no hiccups.
I have hit 10 gigs plus each month with my atrix and tethering. I use it for everything. Xbox live 2 computers and an ipad. Never been hit by ATT for tethering or excessive bandwith usage. I have also received 150 off my last two bills due to ATT not being able to provide HSUPA.

I use barnacle for tethering on my iPad and iTouch and netbooks at school. Nothing yet. I use up around 5 gigs a month, and nothing yet.
I'm not expecting to be caught, but if I do, sucks for me.
I too used to use my iPhones for netflix (still do on my ipad and netbooks), so these data rates are abnormal for me.

I still have my unlimited data package from my Iphone 3g. ATT just grandfathered me in each time when I threw in my sim card in my new phones.

I reached 20GB from downloading Torrents, Streaming Netflix on my XBox, playing online computer games, PSN, and XBL. (One at a time).
That was last month and I haven't gotten a warning of any sort.....
When I play online it doesn't lag if I only have one thing connected at a time.
I used it for halo reach. It worked really well. Im sure it will be even better with hsupa. That was in raleigh nc getting around 1.5 down and 3.3 up.
Packetloss and upload we're undetected. NAT was moderate. Seemed like games took a little longer to load. Playing cyrsis 2 the lag was a little more noticable but still I can't complain. My wife tried playing nascar 2011 on xbl but was unable to get into a race. I did notice phone calls, text messages, and data traffic would kick me offline. But I can't complain it worked for me

I am in the 4gb range at most with the occasional tether. I am so proud of you guys getting 20gb month, I would be too afraid to get caught plus there is so much free wifi around me.
For those of you running Xbox live, what speeds are you getting?(just curious)

I used 50G plus this last cycle and haven't been hit with anything...use it for gaming and home internet...i also work for the company and have seen the news bout the letters but still don't know how they will track the data...its all up in the air and gwent been rolled out yet from what I know/seen. I'm scared cause love the teathering with phone for tablets and hate to see it go away.

In previous post I use my atrixfor every. And im going to use it even more now with hsupa enabled. ATt can't do anything unless u let them.

my previous phone was the t9193 (imported hd2) and i was on the $10 dumb phone plan. I would hit 9-12gb per month, and never had an issue, tethering nearly everyday.
Just got my atrix a few days ago, (used the iphone 2g trick to get the unlimited data plan. sucks going from 10 to 30, but meh) and im already at 3gb. Almost all tethering.

Transformer 3G model announced.

Pretty sneaky of Asus to do this. Release a Wifi version only to announce a 3G model less than 2 months later... Not sure if I will be one to return my Wifi TF, but I'll definitely consider it.

+1.. U.S. carriers are probably going to charge you crap loads just to have a plan with them too.
T-Mobile has dropped the price of its G-Slate tablet to $399.99 with 2 years contract but with 200 mail in rebate. The LG G-Slate was one of the first tablets to run Honeycomb when it came out, and looked like a true competitor to the iPad with a brilliant 8.9” display panel with native resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels, 1GHz dual-core processor, Android 3.0, full HD 1080p video recording capability, 9 hours of promised battery life and these all encased in only 620gms.

Tethering is nice and all. But if you only have a 200MB data plan for your phone, it's not really an option. Browsing a desktop version of a website is already a few MBs. I don't think the 3G version will cost that much more, max (my guess) is $100 with no contract.

I think he means $100 dollars more.. but you are still going to have to have a data plan so wouldn't it make more sense to update your phones data plan and tether it than have 2 data plans on the go. Or is 3g data free where you live?

Well most people complain whenever wifi only models of tablets don't come out. Asus just gave its customers what we wanted. An inexpensive, quality tablet.

Sounds good for those that want 3G. I prefer a Wifi only version. Like others I can use my phone Wifi hotspot, and I have sprint unlimited 4 g.
Also, Asus did the right move by shipping a Wifi only version first. That gave Asus a low price point which brought them in under the competition, especially the iPad. Motorola lost a lot of sales by bring out a 3G Xoom which was perceived as considerably more expensive.

i tether my unlimited data from att since winmo days. sux if u got that capped junk,
The premium involved with 3G model is not worth it. Not to mention an extra data plan just for the tablet. Tether ftw! Seriously though I don't think most need internet on their tablet all the time. For stuff like email jist use your phone.

Laptop Dock on Sale Refurb 175.00 ATT

I've been waiting/debating whether or not to get the laptop dock.
ATT just put them on sale and I couldn't resist.
I plan on never using the tethering feature, just wifi. Just as with any laptop pc.
I do realize that 50 USD more will buy me a nice netbook but for some reason at 175 I'm powerless to resist.
I've tried the laptop dock a few times at the ATT store, and now that it's affordable (well it is still expensive but I ya only live once), so I'm excited and looking forward to playing with it.
I'm even debating taking only the phone and lap dock with me to Asia in lieu of a real pc. After all I only do email when traveling anyway.
Connectivity? WiFi in the rooms and even if only RJ45 I still carry a portable WAP for those eventualities.
ATT Data in China is STUPID expensive anyway.
Has anyone used the laptop dock in lieu of their PC / Netbook on trips?
What is the link?
Please post the link for purchasing the refurp lapdock.
Thanks!

If I get the laptop dock and I have unlimited data, when I go to add a tethering plan will I lose unlimited data? Also, will I be able to use unlimited data with tethering?

Is tethering necessary for the laptop dock? I assumed that having data plan would be enough.

You must pay for tethering no matter what unless you hack it.
Apparently having unlimited data isn't appropriate for the lapdock. Apparently it requires a bull**** plan.
