Just a heads up for everybody; I'd recommend calling Verizon and adding the text messaging block to your account. I called last week about it since I noticed the per txt service code on my account but was assured that since my device didn't receive text messages I wouldn't ever be charged.
Sure enough I noticed on my account online that somebody tried sending me a message and sure enough verizon was going to charge me. I had to call in and get the block added (this time they actually did it, she mentioned that the first person should've just done it when I asked) and credited me back the 20 cents (!) for the text message I supposedly received.
Just wanted to warn everybody to keep an eye on their bill.
the question is, can i put a text plan on my Xoom , and how to I get txt messages if I did?

Hi,
My corporate Sprint account does not include the ability to send text messages, but I could receive them. I tested it and confirmed it with colleagues that have the Mogul as well.
Now, after upgrading to the new ROM, I can now send text messages. I don't have anyone at work that is willing to try the new ROM yet, so I'm not sure if that's it.
Is there a way that the new ROM could enable text messaging when it's not included in my plan?
you can text without a plan you just get chanrged 0.25 per text...

I thought that's how it works, but on our company phones, it receives text messages, but says "Unable to send Text message" when sending.
Now I am able to receive, like before, but now it also sends text messages without an error.
Your boss will be having a talk with you.
the software update help your phone send text. people who didnt get the update or waiting to get it, will lose features on they're phone, like me i lost the ab ility to roam and also sent texts, i got the update and everything works well, only thing i dont like is the fact that it wipes your phone out...
I just got into this article, new version 2.2 has just been released:
http://droidedup.com/2010/05/hullomail-2-2-for-android-now-available/
http://www.hullomail.com/us/android.html
And I found one alternative:
http://www.youmail.com
Is anyone using it with HTC Desire?
Any issue with it? Please if you can give short review
Have been using the previous version with no issues. Not had a lot of VM's but it works in that it sends you an MP3 of the message to your email address, or you can call the local number (included in your contract minutes normally) to retrieve the message as you normally would. You can also set custom greeting message if you wish. I would definately recommend - I've been on T-mobile in UK for few years and retrieving VM's were always the only 'external' charges on my bill each month - no more!
Thanks for your info. But I found this app is only for UK and US...
It is not available for other countries
Too bad, I live in NL.
And I can't find alternative.
I was thinking if there is an app that can simply record voicemail to local phone storage as mp3. That would be enough...

Found http://www.youmail.com/
The thing that I dont understand, how does it works "actually"? Because the basic service is free.
From their FAQ:
Q. How does YouMail work?
It's really simple. Calls you don't answer get forwarded to YouMail instead of your current wireless voicemail. That's it.

So, I will still pay to forward the voice mail to YouMail, correct?
I tried hullomail for about a day, and frankly didnt really like it,
had to sign in every time etc.. was just annoying so gave it up
Sign in? I never have to sign in. The only problem with hullomail I guess is that if you have your internet connection off, you wont get to know that you have a voicemail. (someone plz correct me if i am wrong here)

Unfortunately, this appears to be the case - if your phone is offline you get no notification. Hullomail originally offered SMS notifications, but they are no longer available. Customers who set-up SMS notifications in the past are still receiving them however!
WORKAROUND TO RECEIVE OFFLINE HULLOMAIL SMS NOTIFICATIONS
When a voicemail or missed call is registered by Hullomail, the system can send you both an email with the details/message, and a separate notification email.
It's possible that you could set the notification to go to an email>sms address - a number of providers, including some mobile companies - offer this service. (ipipi is one such provider that used to.. You'd have to double check)

My SMS notifications has stopped.
UpdateHullomail now offers SMS notifications, and transcription.
Both services are at a cost, and can be purchased in the 'in-app store' after installing the app in Google Play. One or more services might not be available for certain countries.

I've been using this for years, on Blackberries then Androids. It's always been flawless for me, and it's handy to have a permanent email with the voicemail attached. The facility to "just" dial in to get your voicemails when there's no data signal is great too.
I get a couple random text messages per day on the tab. I think I'm getting charged a pretty penny for them since I obviously do not have a text message plan for my tab.
How can I stop these unwanted text messages? Thanks!

Text messaging is included in my data plan. I don't pay extra for it and don't need to have an extra text msg plan. Rather than assuming, verify your specific situation with your carrier to be sure.

No need for me to check anything....I dont want random text messages...how can I block all texts or turn the off?
Thanks!
Turn your 3G cellular off. Poof. Instant off.
Call your provider and have them block text messaging.
I've never seen this before but when responding to non-standard phone numbers (like those ones that send you local deals) I started seeing a dialogue box come up warning me that:
Messaging would like to send a message to xXxX
This may cause charges on your mobile account

Not too worried but a Google search yielded nothing on the matter. Has anyone else seen this?
Here's a screenshot
Got this too.
It's a security measure to stop malware sending expensive premium rate text messages. Basically if you try and text a number thats not in your address book (i,e, by addressing it by number rather than name), then you get this warning.
What's funny is all the scareware FUD stories like this, fail to even bother talk about these things.

I was going over my bill and I noticed two messages were sent out to this weird number that showed up as international: 0720001669
Verizon has no information on it, I asked them to investigate.
When I looked the number up online one of the things that popped up was an old 2012 thread from avast anti theft which I do use.
It's also the same time I was signing up for Isis mobile wallet.
The text messages were both on the same day but at different times.
The first was sent @ 12:15pm two minutes after I sent a text to my wife.
The second was sent @ 1:46pm the same time I sent a text to my wife.
It hasn't happened since, but I see no logs in my phone about it(though a lot of data is missing from that time period).
Wondering if anyone else has had something like this happen and if you ever found out the cause.
had the same issue

I use google voice number and I never gave out my real number. However I did find out text messages to strange numbers that i was charged for on my verizon number. After a lot of and a lot of investigation, i find out that a lot of messenger services do that ( whats app, facebook ... ) they do it as a verification. Every single app that takes your permission to send text messages can at any point send a verification message. SO i blocked all messages on my verizon number, I was tired of paying $ 1-2 a month just on verification.

I think avast anti theft must be the culprit then. It's the only app I have that has access to send text messages.
I've been facing the same problem...

After I read this thread, I decided to uninstall the Avast Anti Theft, which I was using until then... Just hope it'll fix the problem, 'cause it's driving me crazy! :silly:
Either way, thank you for sharing the info!
