[Q] Is it bricked? - Epic 4G General

My phone is stuck at the "samsung" screen.
It wont even let me go into the download mode when i try the 3 finger salute!
what do you think is wrong? and what can i do to fix it?

It is not bricked, that term is thrown around too much, a bricked phone would be absolutely useless and completely unresponsive, as long as it does anything other than serve as an expensive paper weight it is not bricked.
Take the battery out of your phone then power it on while holding 1 on the keyboard, you should boot into download mode then ODIN your phone.

what sucks is i have a Mac ..not a PC

Then use heimdall.

whats that and where can i find it?

You can find it with little more than a google search but here are 2 links
http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265

i never used anything like this...idk whats even going on

Ive never been able to get it to work....i just dowloaded a version of windows xp and found bootcamp on my mac. partitioned and installed xp. Really only took 45 mins. but now i dont have to worry about "bricking" because i can use ODIN. Its time consuming but i recommend it.

where do u get windows? and is it free?

No offense intended but it doesn't seem like partitioning a drive or using heimdall would be easy for you, it might just be better to go to your nearest Sprint store and let them ODIN your phone to stock for you.

Need software help!!

Ok since I upgraded to the 2.1 myphone has been having major problems almost to the point where I cant use it anymore. I have done a factory reset 3 times and still hasnt fixed the problems. I did do the upgrade over the air, what I need to know is, is there anyway I can downgrade back to the 1.5 or manually re upload the 2.1 version to see if it fixes my problems. Thank you.
what is exactly wrong with your phone that is making it unusable?
There is no current way to downgrade 2.1 to 1.5, even with OTA update, unless you would like to flash the root image, then downgrade back to regular 1.5... Also we may be able to better assist you if you explain the issues you are having with your phone a little better.
The issues I am having are text app force closes all the time, mostly when the phone itself is charging. I dont receive texts a lot, I have to *228 frequently through out the day. When I am at the homescreen the pages will slide all the way to the left and stay there the only way I can get back to anywhere is to either do a soft reset or long press the home key to go to another app. The biggest problem though is the texting and like i said it mostly just happens when the phone is charging. But the keyboard will seriously lag, force close...the cursor jumps to the begining of whatever i am saying or just randomly go to the left and mix all my words up.
have you installed any apps or do you use any widgets? are you using the sense home launcher?
i have not installed any apps since the 3rd time i did the factory reset, and i have no idea about the other question.
It sounds to me like there was some corruption with your OTA update. I would venture to say that you have two options here:
1. Take your Eris into Verizon and have them replace it.
or
2. Root your Eris and enjoy the many available roms here.
*Standard disclaimer: I am not responsible for what you do to your device, it is your choice to do whatever you please...*
why don't you just go into the verizon wieless store and tell them what is happening and they will give you a replacement. i had slight wifi issues so i went there and they gave me a new phone on the dot! they might make you do some factory resets and such there also
yeah thats what i think too..but since i did the over the air update to the 2.1 i didnt think I could do any roots or whatever. I am not that knowledgable when it comes to the roots or any of that. I would like to do that so I can fix my phone and actually use it. Can you please provide me with step by step instructions on how to do that.
ok i am not responsible for this but here is the link to the instructions:http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html
also this will void your warranty so you can't get a free replacement from verizon after you root
update: these are instructions for windows if you search around you can find instructions for linux and mac (i rooted on a mac so if you need help PM me and i will respond when i can (i am not an expert))
ok so once i dothe root or whatever will my contacts still sync with google?? I cant get a replacement phone anyhow because I bought this phone from a private owner, but I did not have problems with it until right after I did the upgrade a few weeks after I bought the phone.

Yes, you can still sync with Google. (Did someone say g00gl3?) Lolz
Anyhow, just do some research as you choose which rom to load. Every rom has it's own features and charateristics. Also, make sure to create Nandroid backups whenever flashing from rom to rom just in case of issues. Good luck!
ok since i am very illiterate about the whole rom thing and all that..can you please in your opionion tell me which way to go?? I wont hold anything against you I just want to be able to use my freakin phone. I dont really care about the techy stuff as long as i can use the apps and text and make calls I am good. I looked at the link you provided "google" lol..and i am not sure quite how to do it. I know i am being a big pain right now I just dont want to mess my phone up.
actually the jumpy screen while charging thing is pretty common I believe its a hardware issue though...its my belief the mini usb connecter on the eris is shoddy
plug in the charger and wiggle it you may notice the connetor is not properly fastened to the phone
fyi DO NOT hold the phone up or horizontial by the usb plug...my wife did that to both our phones and ever since then it will flake out
a quick fix would be to plug in wiggle it and unplug you want the mini usb connector back in alignment

No worries - everyone is hesitant at first - no one wants to brick their phone...
What kind of computer do you use; Windows, Mac, or Linux? This is important for following the root procedure.
I still believe the EMA app that I linked is your best bet. It handles the tough command line tasks for you.
As for a rom, you can see by my signature that I prefer Sense-able 3.1 from Jamezelle. But I also really like Evil Eris 2.0.1 by Framework43.
I would probably suggest Sense-able 3.1 for you because it is based on an Eris build. I have found it to be very stable and doesn't really need any tweaks to run well.
*Just wanted to note that I am in no way knocking any other roms or devs on these boards. Thank you to all the talented devs out there for all the work you do!!!*
i downloaded the sensible rom..as far as the app goes how do I go about getting that or whatever?? I am running windows..but the sensible rom file is downloaded to my desk top i havent done anything with it yet beings that I dont have a clue as to what I am doing lol..

Just download the EMA app and use it. The thread has instructions to use it. Just read the part about pre-requisites to install the needed software. Then run EMA and follow the center column of 4 commands. Thats really all there is to it.
Like I said earlier, ECLIPS3 and Jamezelle do great work and are willing to provide help. As he said above...

Real TRUE Brick this time

[PROBLEM SOLVED]
Ive been flashing back and forth to different builds trying which is better. I made sure I took the cautions not to flash builds that would brick my phone. There were 4 times that I soft bricked my phone but I was able to revive it. However, my little game has come to an end with this last one. The fault was this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817186.
Little did I know, by doing a repartition and not loading anything to the NAND resulted in the bootloader not being installed. (Devices like this should have a ROM programmed to recover from these errors, think Gigabyte) Upon reset, the phone went out and didn't turn back on. ODIN reports success. Now the phone cannot turn back on, no matter what battery pull method I use, I get nothing on the screen. So much for fail-safe protocols Samsung has implemented, if there are even any. Poorly engineered!
EDIT:Thanks for all your suggestions guys. So yes this phone was definitely bricked beyond any software repair. I was going to JTAG it but I figured there MUST to be some hardware bootloader implemented. I went ahead and did the USB JIG and surprise, it booted from the hardware bootloader. I used ODIN to flash JFD and it works now. So my guess is samsung did implement a fail safe, which is the USB trick and forces the phone to boot from hardware. If that is true, this phone is brick proof, provided that all electronics still work.
EDIT 2: I am wrong about the bootloader being hardware. Some say it is flashable, so it is possible you can get a real TRUE brick and must need JTAG to revive it. Fortunately for me, I was able to use the USB JIG method to get it back up and running. Too bad, a new phone would've been nice.
Not poorly engineered, just poorly made user input.
Yes true, but samsung should have taken into account accidents like this will happen then they dont have control over who administers their update. People have bricked their phones by doing the factory update. When I design systems like these, I always make sure there is a fail safe backup that the user cannot modify. I am sure samsung has one and maybe they just dont let us access it.
I sometimes encounter the same error message but I never repartition. Luckily, i never clicked on it in Odin.
But you have to realize that most of those bricks are because people modified their phones from factory (ie. Voodoo and OCLF). Odin, a program used by internal Samsung engineers, was never meant for the public and shouldn't be used unless you know how to use it.
I agree, there should be an absolute fail safe if worse comes to worse, but the point I am making here is Samsung isn't wrong in this case.
When you violate warranties and experiment you tacitly accept responsibility for your actions. To not do so is not an act of rebellious ire...it is an act of denial.
Manufacturers do not, nor can not prepare for all scenarios because the possible number of scenario's to cover are legion. I don't see it as realistic especially for them to prepare for brick scenario's created by using a leaked internal engineering tool that the community has figured out largely through trial and error either. OTA and Mini Kies bricks they are responsible for, for obvious reasons, and Samsung and T-Mobile have taken responsibility for these scenarios because they are ones of their making.
XDA is not a place where people file warranty complaints (though some do complain). It is a place where people experiment, hack, and customize smartphones. Though some manufacturers do a better job than others at getting out of our way here (Samsung hasn't done so bad here relative to say Motorola), I don't think any of them particularly "care" about such community efforts in any meaningful sense. And why should they?
By modifying our devices aren't we quite clearly saying we're taking matters into our own hands? You have to balance your strong desire to tinker with the reality of where responsibilities lie.
These phones are some of the most difficult Android phones to brick. Anecdotally and statistically shown to be. Not impossible of course, but quite difficult. I feel for your bad experience but at least consider shouldering some of the blame.
Thank god i am too scared to use odin. The deepest i go is clockwork recovery, but good luck with your paperweight.
Too bad the SGS is so light, it wouldnt make a good paperweight, or even a brick.
but seriously, the warranty is there to protect users which this happens to, assuming it wasnt voided by hacking the phone. Are you asking samsung to take into account that you would hack the phone and provide a way back after you have a bad hack and probably make themselves liable by providing that way back in case it does not work properly?
I want to be clear that I am not blaming samsung for this but I thought samsung could have done a better job. Ill admit, this phone was the first phone that impressed me in years and as an engineer, I am hardly ever impressed; other engineers will get my point. I wish they had some soft of fail safe mechanism. For us who like to tweak things, I get we get what we deserve. But what about those who dont like to tweak and still brick their phones? i.e. those who use Kies Mini and still brick. I still have warranty on the phone and I'll try to take it up with Tmobile, hope they don know much about flashing. BTW, I tried using the other program but no go. All the drivers were installed, rebooted computer...nothing. I think it is because I have W7 64 and not 32?
Have you tried the jig method of getting into dl mode?

Keep on flashing, and eventually Odin will probably save your butt
Don't be scared of it, it works great. And it is safe to use.
========================================
I'm really sorry about your phone man, I didn't know that you had to NAND before re-partition, thank god I've never checked that but I might have in the future had you not shared this with us, so thanks a lot!
I guess your loss is everyone elses gain
No I havent tried the Jig method. The thread says that I need to have at least the samsung screen, so some kind of activity. This phone is just off, nothing comes on, no buttons, no screen...just dead. I think when I followed that guide, it told be to repartition and then reboot with the "PDA" field empty. So the phone rebooted when it finished formatting without installing anything. Now the NAND is at a "blank" state and I do not have any bootloader on there. Anyone know of a method to install a bootloader without the phone turning on?
I might be a little too far out of my element here but I think I found a guide to remove the sdcard and format it via pc one time when I was in a similar situation. I am at work currently and I also cannot remember if I have the link saved.
Maybe some phone expert in your city may help you to install the bootlaoder. I think it's called jtagging, I'm not sure though.

Just call Tmobile and tell then that you were upgrading to froyo 2.2 using Kies mini and it froze...
I had a black screen once. I was flashing in odin and knocked the cable loose. I think I had to remove the battery, open odin, plug the usb cable in, then install the battery and possibly hold a key down on the phone. I believe the download screen then came up. Otherwise the phone would not respond nor would any lights come on

Depending on which drivers you installed (and there seem to be quite a few floating around) you might need to disable Driver Signature Checking in 64bit Windows OS's if the drivers are not signed. The easiest way I've found to do this is with EasyBCD . Install it, run it, click Advanced Options and enable loading of unsigned drivers. Do this before loading a potentially unsigned driver and you're good to go.
Just a tip, and my lengthy diatribe on responsibility was more to stem the potential tide of trolling such a thread is likely to generate than dump on you. I know what it's like to brick things. I've been bricking stuff for 30 years lol.

To disable driver signing, you ONLY need to run a single command and then reboot. And this applies to both Windows 7 and Vista.
Also to the OP.
You say you have no bootloader, but can't find ANYWHERE in this thread that says you were attempting to flash a bootloader. In fact, you can **** up partitioning, and your bootloader is still in tact. Been there, done that.
Do this. Plug the phone in, and leave it charging for about 30 minutes. Pull the phone off, hold the volume buttons, and plug the phone into a computer. See what happens. I had a ****ty situation end up happening to me, that I couldn't get the phone on for about 30 minutes. I had already even called T-Mobile for a replacement.

This "hardware" bootloader as you are calling it, is the exact bootloader that you can flash and TRULY brick your device. It is NOT a failsafe in the way in which you are referring. Please, please don't call it this. There are plenty of users on this forum that are clueless. The jig method, is a hardware jump point that Samsung has built in to allow you to get to download mode situations where the button method does not work.
As I mentioned earlier, you didn't flash a bootloader. Nor did you full on brick your device. Glad your device is back to normal now though.
my apologies then, it would be easier if samsung gave us the schematics, but that would never happen. So when we use odin to flash, we are not flashing the bootloader as well? Is the bootloader located on another ROM that is not easily accessible? I guess ROM would be the incorrect term since you stated you can "flash" the bootloader.

So....totally bricked my tab.....

So, as I cant leave things alone.....come on, who can right?.
Verizon Tab....
Im a Droid X kinda guy, we dont have Kernals (thanks Motorola ) so sometimes this stuff gets confusing, so many options right....
Flashed the VZW Kernal after a few attempts, worked, started messing with Roms, ok cool. Started backing up using CWM, ok cool.
Here is where **** goes wrong....
Started tweaking rom, went to reboot, typical boot loop, no biggie, Odin and Heimdall are my best friends, infact at this point I think my 4 year old has seen me use them enough that she can do it, lol.
decided to nuke and repave, but the usual factory files failed halfway through, wtf?, so I got the Phone---!---PC icon, whoops.....
Did some heavy ready/searching, seems there is not to much out there for detailed info on this.
Found a few posts scattered, one was a system dump, and the person said he flashed everything to repair, so I decided to follow instructions, big giant huge EFF-UP !!
What I know now, after all is said and done......
I flashed the bootloader.
Well, now I know.
So, it happens that VZ tech was nice enough to still send me a replacement, I tell them the truth, they know my DX has the GB leak, wifes Dpro is rooted/rom, etc.
Lesson....
um, dont flash boot loader? ha ha ha.
Oh, I did crack the Tab open, took battery out, looked inside, real ***** getting back cover off, looked real good at cover, possible to airbrush/change colors though...
The tab is not really bricked if you can power it on. There is still a way to "unbrick" it.

You're not the first to do that. Use three wall charger for at least four hours, and try again.
In the stickie section (you can see that part of the forum if you view with a pc) there are some instructions involving some button sequences and the usb cord. But you may have to send tab away to samsung for a clean flash with a JTAG Box.
What is the name of the 3-blade screw driver, and where can I get one? It seems gorilla glass is a farce.

Dont remember the name of the screwdriver, I have alot of strange small tools, large collection of bits, you can get away with a regular small bit.
Taking the back off was a huge *****, you wont break anything, just a pain. Battery is huge, and a good majority of the weight.

$50 if you can tell me how to unbrick i9000 without USB jig

Okay, so I bricked my phone trying to update it, and by all accounts I now need a USB jig to ressurect it.
The problem is I live in the middle of nowhere with no mail delivery, and have to drive almost an hour just to get to my Post Office box. I'm also not the most patient of people, and I need my phone.
I've ordered a USB jig, but it'll probably take at least a few days to reach me.
In the meantime, if you can figure out a way for me to revive my phone without the jig, and without ripping it open and soldering stuff, I will pay you $50 (via PayPal).
I fell like there must be a way. After all my Windows machine responds by trying to install some driver when I plug it in (SEC S5PC110 Test B/D).
I think that something is going on there, but it's just not showing anything on the screen to give me any clues. I've tried all manner of combinations of attempting to power it up, but with no result.
So what do you think? Are you up for a challenge? If you can crack it, before the jig arrives, I'll give you $50.

Resurrector requires soldering - I don't have the tools or skill to do that.
Offering money is not a "bribe" - it's an incentive.
"Dumb" is spelt with a silent "B", not a "P" - and actually refers to someone who cannot speak. Using it to refer to someone who is stupid is actually very stupid in itself - and spelling it incorrectly... enough said.
Try using odin...

Sorry. I should have been clearer in my original post.
By "bricked" I mean NOTHING shows on the screen. It is completely black. It's not stuck in download mode.
I don't have a Linux box so can't do any Linux things. I have a PC (Vista) and a Mac.
I don't have the equipment or skill to solder things.
And because of where I live, I don't have access to people who might have these things.
What happens if you connect your phone to your PC and run the batch file in this archive:

Its currently in a test mode, and the only way to get it into download mode seems to be by what Adam Sandler had done....
anyway you can try the following ( which I doubtful about its success) , meant to get into download mode.
1) First remove Ext SD card and Sim card , also remove battery and reinsert Before any attempt.
IF you have ADB already installed on your PC
click on run and type cmd
now type:- adb reboot recovery or adb reboot download
phone will go into recovery mode or download mode as typed
2)
1. Take Battery out
2. Whilst putting battery in press Vol-Down+Power+Home button
Press the three buttons, and keep them pressed while inserting the battery, and and the phone should get into download mode instantly.
ADB gives "error: device not found"
I've tried every imaginable combination of buttons, taking out battery, removing SIM, trying all sorts of things plugged into USB, plugged into charger, unplugged, ...
I'm currently installing Ubuntu to try Adam Outler's ModeDetect USBID Detector
Tried various things, including installing a VBox Ubuntu, so I could try out some Linux-only solutions. But still nothing has worked.
In fact from what I've been reading, I think even the USB jig won't kick it back into life.
How would I go about finding someone that can repair this sort of thing? I'm in the Crowsnest Pass, AB. My nearest major city is Calgary. I don't even know where to start trying to find a place that can fix this.

Save 50$ for a new motherboard. Don't lose time.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
Unbrickable Resurector worked for me without opening my phone. It was also totally off and didn't show a reaction. Resurrecting is a thing of half an hour.

You have to use resurection software

I was one of the developers behind the unbreakable mod.
There is one failure mode that reaches the TEST B/D.
If you have TEST B/D, you can skip the hardware mod, and just use the unbrickable mod software.

Phone is dead n900w8

Hello
I was trying to flash the official android L on my note 3 n900w8. I believe I hard bricked the phone because the phone is not responsive. It does not turn on at all. Does not charge. No signs of life! Only when I plug the phone into my pc, the pc recognizes it under the name QC BULK.
I researched a lot about this problem and I found the SD card method. Tried it, and still does not work.
There is another method where you open the phone and find a resistor located near the camera, but I can't seem to find that resistor.
I bought a ''jig'' piece hoping that it will boot the phone up, but still no response. DEAD!
The only solution left is to ''Jtag'' it, but before I pay 60-70 dollars, do you guys have any ideas/solutions??
please please help!!:crying:
Thanks!:highfive:

Yes, I agree with Joku1981, do you even know which file have you flashed?
Everything you said has "brick" written all over it...
Can you get into the download/recovery mode?
If download or recovery mode is accessible, there may be a solution... Just don't ruin your phone by opening it and not knowing how to assemble it back afterwards...
Cheers!
unfortunately I cant access recovery mode nor download mode.
The phone would not even turn on.
I flashed the n9005 which should work on n900A phones. I dont think this is important now since the phone would not even turn on. If only there is a way to access download mode, I will be able to fix it.
As I said, the computer recognises the phone as QC BULK!!
