[Q] Porting windows mobile on 7 inch tablet please help! - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi folks,
i have an idea. i am so much fond of windows mobile 6.5.3 and i really like it. i think it's one of the best os for tablets, especially at 7 inches. now you can google for the mangrove 7 to get the idea. unfortunally, the mangrove 7 has never been in production. so i thought of creating my own: i have found a device with almost the same specifications as the hd2. so it must be possible to port that image onto the device. the device is called: huawei ideos s7 slim.
my question: is it possible to run windows mobile on this device by porting the hd2 rom on it? heres why i think:
the both have:
qualcomm 8250 1ghz
adreno 200
and everything else like gps thats involved with the qualcomm chip.
does anyone have an idea how i get the windows mobile on to this specific tablet?
many thanks!
Jakob Sebens

sure its not impissible. but i diubt it will happen. there is hardly any community supportfor that device. alot of work will be required.

hi, thanks for your reply,
why is alot of working needs to be done?
i thougth it was only a matter of flashing the hd2 rom on the device since they have almost identical specs. or must there be done something to make the device accessible for flashing alternative roms?
best regards and thanks for answering!

Sure. but you need to understand slot...
1) you need a tool to crack the bootloader.
2) you need to write XIP scripts, files etc. you need to build a kitchen.
3) BASICALLY slot of work will be needed! I say it is not impossible but 99% unlikely to happen.
4) Community support! you need at least 15 devs on this project...
Think about the TG01 .. same specs isnt enough! my TG01has virtually the same specs as the HD2 but it still cant get a decent Android Port/ROM dump from HD2. Same snapdragon CPU/GPU, screen, OS, etc.

same specs does not mean same hardware.
if you learned a bit of digital electronics, surely you know about hardware addresses, etc. in our case, device X for hardware A maybe located at address 0x1234 but the same device on hardware B could be located at 0x1000. these addresses are generally hardcoded in ROMs. it's a lot of work to identify those differences & make the necessary modifications.
(a device can be many things - buttons, screen, touch sensor, speaker, mic, communication ports, etc...)

very much thanks for theses replies, consider this thread closed then. i will buy an htc athena then. thanks all for your help.

The HTCANDROID project! Let's get it running!

Hey!
As i've previously mentioned here once (I think), i started a small forum where I tried to gather all the setups for running Android on various HTC models. Now that the HTC G1 (Dream) is soon released, we will will get some very interesting challenges while trying to build Android ROM's, etc..
This forum is great, but its also very big. Thought that it might be a good idea to have our android resources on a separate forum?
Anyways, thought i could register a domain and such, but for now the forum is at http://www.connect-utb.com/htcandroid
Some of you are there already! Hopefully, with the experienced user base we have here, we can get Android ROMS and whatnot for our HTC models, as the HTC Dream looks rather poor. (Although better devices will surely come in the future).
you must be joking. Android is a total OS unlike apps that we see all over which are portable among HTC devices. It takes months alone just to get Android as it is today for the kaiser. Mostly everything for WM can be ported among other devices which some exceptions to nontouch devices. It'll be a long time until you see Android ported over to more devices than now. My suggestion would be to use a device that's got android projects already in progress or at your nearest convenience to buy a device with android on it.
Think we misunderstand each other, but you dont believe that if we can extract the android ROM from the HTC Dream, and modify and install it on lets say, the Kaiser?
You can always try before saying that it isn't going to work.
I will track this post because i'm very curious by the Android OS.
I get it...and completely understand what this is about...it's HTC...which means theoretically we should be able to at least somewhat get it working...I've started a wizard thread on your new forum in hopes that any information or progress getting it ported over gets posted all in one location for easy access....kudo's for thinking ahead as I dont think android is going anywhere soon and while this forum is very useful it's mostly for winmo devices....nothing wrong with speading the wings a lil bit and branching out...
looking forward to the press conference!!
I would say we should be able to get Android to run on the OS level of our devices, but it will probably need a bit of modifying. However, since it's open source I'm hoping the modifying will be a lot easier because of this.
Hey,
I was just on HTC homepage ( htc.com ), where the G1 is shown.
They printed the specs, which are very similar to the diamond
Same chipset, same rom size, same ram size,...
SO I think, it would be ( maybe easily?) possible to port android to the diamond

Same here!
If my memory does not fail, I remember that one of the first peaks at Android was being run in a Blue Angel. So, I guess there is a big chance that we might in fact be able to see Android running on more than one device (of course, you will have more or less features depending on the device's capabilities and hardware limitations, namely apps that work with an accelerometer, etc).
Maybe, the development should be worth following because as much as I don't want to believe it, my device (Blue Angel) will only trick death for so long (by death I mean not being able to move to newer versions of WM) and we will need a way to pass the time .
HTC Touch Vogue in progress of being ported
Hey don't forget about the senior member "DZO" that started ANDROID porting to HTC Vogue and it is Successful
This is his direct link to the files : http://cs-alb-pc3.massey.ac.nz/vogue
And here is the link to the posting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=382265
I think he did a GREAT job porting Android. I am running Android 0.9 with most of the featuress except installing programs but only because he is the only one that does that. So, he needs help! I am sure... Plus, on this site people are cheeping in for HTC Diamond so he can work on that too...
Here is the link: http://www.myhtcphone.com
So, if you want something done we should start by contributing either money, or programming support! I wish I knew how to program this
ahhhh I wish I would have fully functional Android on my HTC
Thanks for the support! The forums are slightly active now!
Hopefully, we will be able to get Android running more or less flawless soon! As pointed out, its possible!
he he nice link, it seems that there are allready htc devices running with android.
just wondering, is it possible to have dual boot in one device ?
hmmm, seems to have no desktop syncing.. this may be a huge set back for anyone trying to get androig running on another HTC device.

well currently (or in the case of the vogue) android is being booted via haret (a linux bootloaded) running on top of windows mobile.. so i guess its already kind of dual boot
For now, Android has to be run from within Windows Mobile, so no true dual boot yet
Already started
Hey you guys might want to check out the following links. Over at PPC Geeks they already have a thread going:

Diamond doesnt have QWERTY keyboard, so i think it could be on Touch Pro instead
Someone ported Android for BlueAngel?
Please can someone tell me if Android is already running in BlueAngel? If there is a way show me how. Thanks Man!!!
Maybe I'm mistaken, but wasn't Android made so that it can run on a wide range of devices. I, for one, can't wait till its ported to samsung omnia. Damn, that would be good!
@Coldheat,
What does the cab file do? Its an OS, so cab file??

Touch HD GPU?

Hi guys, im new to this forum and have done a lot of reading, though have not found a definitive answer to my questions:
What is the issue with the Touch HDs GPU?
Is it that Drivers have not been made by HTC and so it is not used?
What can we do to overcome this?
I have already installed the Diamond ATI drivers although they do not seem to give me performance as smooth as i have seen on other, older pocket pcs.
Thanks in advance, i would really appreciate it if someone were to clear up these things for me.

The blackstone uses the MSM72xx chipset made by Qualcomm. In theory there are drivers for that chip, but the Qualcomm policy is a bit strange. Apparently you buy the chip itself, but the drivers aren't included. So you have to pay for each driver seperatly.
Therefore HTC tries to save some money, so they haven't bought these drivers, which means that the major work is done by the cpu making the device slow (or at least slower than it could be with full hardware support).
Until now there is no real work around. We are still looking for devices with these drivers included, but so far we haven't found drivers, which make full use of the hardware.
Personally I'm wondering if those drivers really exist (for Windows Mobile (as claimed by Qualcomm)), because I can't imagine why distributers don't want to add them, as they would improve the performance dramatically.
That's the short story, you can read through this thread in order to get more information.
Thanks
So for the time being is all that we can do is wait for someone to write/port over drivers?

I guess such a low level programming can't be done without the knowhow of the chip itself.
I would like to help but the only thing i could feasibly help with is testing and benchmarks seeing as i know very little about programming and even less about low level programming

Android OS (linux) on any smartphone

Hi i already posted this on Android Community forum...but i think this must be more appropriate place...so does anybody has any info if it is possible to install the Android OS to a smartphone other than the one that comes with one?
Is it possible to lets say install the Android OS (Linux) to samsung hd i8910, that has symbian OS? Somehow change the firmware to the one with Android? What obstacles exist that this has not been done yet?

one thing would be drivers.
is it possible to install Android OS on Acer E200 which comes with Windows Mobile 6.5? what are the tools to build the custom Rom?
Ok the drivers...that is major..is anyone doing something similar like writing the new drivers?
Takes a lot of time, knowledge and work to build drivers from scratch to different processors.Reasearch teams take months....
Even for qualcomm processors, because OS´s use it in a somewhat diferent way and is coded in the processor itself...thats what i understood for what i read...might be totally wrong i dont understand nothing about that.
Emulation is possible but it wont be the same...laggy,clutered,buggy,etc.

I would highly doubt it, but it's always possible.

Here on XDA, Android has successfully been ported to the HTC Vogue (HTC Touch). Progress is going along rapidly on the Raphael, Diamond, and Blackstone. I don't know about any ports to Symbian phones though, XDA is oriented more towards WinMo.
There might be ports going on to Symbian phones, but there probably won't be much information on any Symbian devices here.
But yes, it is possible to port Android to another smartphone, it just requires a LOT of elbow work.
EDIT: Found this forum, it might interest you. People talking about Android on the i8910 http://forums.samsungi8910omnia.com...-cooked-roms/6239-android-1-6-i8910hd-19.html
Well its always nice to hear, that there is somebody doing something..like you guys here on xda. In the case of i8910 it is the matter of the pure hardware..and type of phone..that is very high end..and cannot be compared with phones of HTC type...not yet..i guess the speed, the capacitive touch screen..processor..camera..only bad thing is sucky symbian..

Android or moblin for TG01?

Hi, I'm thinking of how to port android or linux system to TG01, I do think it's possible, but not sure since I've never port android or moblin before.
Here are some of my thoughts:
First, a dual boot software might be used to ensure TG01 won't brick in case of port failure.
Then, can we dump the rom of Nexous one?
Furthermore, is it possbile to use the rom of winmo drives for android system?
Guys interested or skilled in android or linux system or , make contribution please!
The start to both (though it think that you were thinking of MeeGo not Moblin, which was x86 only) is a working Linux kernel.
HaRET is the tool to start the work on a working kernel, and a working kernel is what we need before we even start worrying about a dual boot bootloader.
Dumping Nexus One might help, but I believe it's not the right way. XDAndroid might be a nice starting point for the Android ecosystem, but not necessarily for the kernel. Otherwise I believe that there are some people that work on the HTC HD2, which is a Snapdragon device as well (though there are some differences (e.g. the TG01 has less Ram and most likely different WiFi, bluetooth, accelerometer or whatever chips)).
(I would like to help, but I am no programmer and not experienced with kernel stuff, but I could help with setting up a wiki and trying out stuff)
Please please please have a go. I can't help with anything except a small donation, as the reason I'm going to buy a TG01 is purely because I can't afford an HTC phone at the moment. I was really happy to see a section on the TG1 on here, which was the other reason I decided to go non-HTC.
Thanks to all of you. I can't accept any donation now.
Is there anybody want to set up such a project to port android on TG01?
I already wrote about this in the general section since the way we are trying to run linux/android is not with a rom but over the curent os.
Check this thread I posted it has more info:

Thanks,

maybe we need to make a detailed research first and then figure out a way to start
in my opinion it would be great.
I played with HTC Magic some time and I must say that Android is awesome. Android's applications are so great and free. We have to be honest WM has nothing if we compare it to Android or Iphone's OS. In WM market we can buy crapp for a lot of money and Android's free great apps in other hands. TG01 and Android would be perfect match
Have a go...
I use HTC HERO as my primary devise and Toshiba TG01 as my secondary device. To be honest Win Mo does not do justice and dsnt fully utilize the ability of the hardware available. Android is mind blowing with regards to the usability and specially because of the number of useful free apps on offer. . Android is the way to go. It can transform this device from a looser to an absolute winner. I bought the device for £139 with Android it would be a steal..
Thank you so much. Keep up the good work. Unfortunately I contribute in any manner except donating for the efforts because I am not experienced in this.
Same i do i came from iphone OS and using htc magic android, and i love thousand apps for iphone and android and quality of theese ; so id like anybody could make something like this.
TG01 is a great device but is quite short in software by now.

[Q] Convert HTC HD2

Hi all,
Thank you for reading this.
I am fond of windows mobile, and i am really pleased with the os so far.
but, it's a bit slow. in want to ask you the following: Is the following thing possible?
I want to replace the hardware inside the HTC X7500 (logic board, CPU, RAM etc.) for the hardware inside the HTC HD2.
I expect that, because both of the devices got there own kitchen, the windows mobile flash won't be a problem. It would be just a matter of installing drivers.
But will the hardware fit? The x7500 screen, keyboard, joystick, and cameras to the logic board?
thank you very much for thinking about this question.
There will be people tell me, why dont you...
i thougth of this plan because i wanted an windows mobile device like the x7500 only fast.
thanks for helping.
jakobsebens
So ... you want to make a transformer ?
Make them two .. please .
No, seriously. Do you really want to combine two devices into one?
logic board, CPU, RAM etc. these things are expensive... not less than a whole phone.
