How To Switch Back to Newer Swype Beta After 3.70 Update - EVO 4G General

I apologize if this has been posted before, but I have been googling for days and searching on this forum for the answer and couldn't find it.
After Sprint updated the Evo to 3.70, it came with an older version of swype that wasn't as nice as the newest Swype betas (like the recent March 2011beta). Hidden word warnings popping up all over the places was frustrating as hell.
Here is how to switch to the newest version of swype beta.
1- Uninstall the swype beta and installer if you currently have them installed.
2- Use Root Explorer (or similar) and delete or rename "/system/app/Swype.apk" and "/system/lib/libSwypecore.so" (I simply changed the extention to .bak in case I needed them again).
3- Reboot your phone
4- Go to the Swype Beta website and download the newest swype beta installer as per your original beta email instructions.
Doing this, I got the newest Swype Beta (March 2011) running on my Evo running 3.70. Its running very well and I haven't run into any problems whatsoever. Beware that this isn't supported by Swype, but this is their instructions. Finally, no more hidden word notifications!

Original Swype Forum Post
Here's the post that MultiDev mentions:

Gonna try this now....Fingers crossed!
Update: Works great! Running Swype 2.29.71.20186.t100 on my HTC Evo 3.70.651.1 . I can already tell the difference in usability with Swype...seems a lot smoother and faster to me. The reason I wanted the latest beta was to fix the ridiculous problem with auto inserting words from dictionary (and then telling you about how you can delete the word (but it doesn't actually work) via a popup) thing is fixed, that's really all I care about.

Instructions for Installing Swype BETA 3.0 on Sprint Evo Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM
This same method from above works with Swype Beta 3 which was recently released:
https://forum.swype.com/showthread.php?3700
Here are the steps I took to get my Sprint Evo running the Stock Gingerbread update working with the new Swype Beta 3:
(This method was used previously on my Sprint Evo running Stock 2.2 Froyo Rooted, AND on my Sprint Evo after the 2.3.3 GB update. FYI I clean installed xHausx_supersonic_4.22.651.2_deodexed_rooted-signed to retain my Root privileges)
1. Uninstall Swype.apk using program of choice (I used Ti Backup; apk is located here: /system/app/Swype.apk) (tip: you do not have to unselect Swype as your current input method)
2. Remove this file: /system/lib/libSwypecore.so (I used Root Explorer for this)
3. Reboot
4. Download/install Swype Installer.apk
5. Sign in to DL actual Swype.apk
6. Choose version of Swype to install (I picked English/Spanish Beta)
7. Go through Swype Installer process (IE: Install, generate license, select Swype as input method)
8. Done!

That is correct, you have to be rooted to delete the swype system files.

Ok thanks, guess ill have to wait for Swype dev's to come up with their own fix

Unfortunately, Swype does not directly update OEM installs like the one on the Evo. They simply pass on their updates to the OEM (HTC, in the case of the Evo) and its up to the OEM/carrior to bundle it into their next software update. Its up to HTC/Sprint if they want to bundle newer versions or not and decide when that update is released.
Swype only updates their beta directly and you needed to be rooted to install the beta on the Evo.

MyTouch 3G 1st gen SWYPE

I would like to apologize ahead of time for this but I had no luck searching the forums for this answer. I have the first generation of the MyTouch 3G and wanted to set it up with SWYPE. Can anybody please help point me in the right direction to get this done. Thanks so much!
You can sign up for the swype beta on the swpe website. When the next update comes out they'll probably send you an email with a link to download it. If you can't wait you could look around somewhere for a download link to it. We can't provide one here on these forums because it's considered "warez."
How to get swype to work on MT3G.
Not sure if you still were looking for a Swype that works on the mytouch, but just in case you are I thought I would tell you how I FINALLY got it to work on my rooted MT3G.
1. First download the Swype apk, Sorry I tried really hard to get it attached but I am too new,(You can email me and Ill send it too you or just search for this: Swype_1.60.36.8214_HVGA.apk) and put on your SD card.
2. Download Root Explorer(This is needed to change the permissions of the .apk after the install and before you try to run the app)
3. Once you have both these steps completed then open Root Explorer and navigate to the folder where you put the Swype apk.
4. Long click the Swype app and long press on it, then click install.
5. After the install do not launch or activate the Swype keyboard just yet...
6. Navigate to the data/app/ folder and find the com.swype.android.inputmethod-1.apk and long click the it. Go down to permissions and check all the boxes so it has full permission. DONE !
You should be able to go to home => settings => Language & Keyboard, now to activate and use Swype !
Where do you get Swype? Can it be downloaded from the market?
Swype is not available from the market. Although they do have a couple of wannabe applications out there. If you want Swype just PM me and I can either email it to you or if you want just click click click on dis.... http://db.tt/O2q1jaj
this worked really well

[Q] Swype Beta on Droid X

Please note: I'm not asking for the APK here.
I had an Evo and signed up for the swype beta and was accepted into the program, I returned my evo and got a droid x which comes with swype installed.
As you all know, swype has continually been updated since the version available on my phone. I'm in the beta program and able to download/login to the swype site with my beta account, i've successfully installed the swype beta before on my evo using my credentials.
Here's my problem:
with the latest installer(1.1.5151 i think) it's telling me my current version isn't properly licensed, and is asking me to disable swype to generate a license, because it comes with my droid x i'm not able to disable the keyboard.
even if i have to root is there a way i can disable or remove the built in swype keyboard so i can install the beta?
Are you rooted? If so you can get rid of the swype.apk, but you also have to find the swype library file, which I don't know the exact name or location of off the top of my head.

hope this helps you out:

Tutorial: Installing Beta Swype on Droid X (or other pre-installed devices)
First, your Droid X must be rooted. There is plenty of info out there on how to accomplish this.
Get a root file manager (I use root explorer)
1. Change your default input method to anything other than Swype.
2. Mount file system as R/W
3. Delete (or move/rename) \system\app\swype.apk
4. Delete (or move/rename) \data\dalvik-cache\[email protected]@[email protected]
5. Delete (or move/rename) \system\lib\libSwypeCore.so
6. Reboot
7. Download and Run the latest Swype Beta installer
8. ENJOY!
I hold no responsibility if you screw up your system, and recommend you make a backup before attempting this, but, the above steps worked perfectly for me, and I am now running the latest Swype beta on my X.
These steps should also work on other models that come pre-installed with Swype from the factory, but I don't have another one to test, so have no way of being sure. If anyone tries it, let me know if it works for you!

Why do you want to use the beta instead of the stock Swype app?
The beta does seem to work better
One notable feature in the beta is that you can double tap words to pop up a list of other possible words you meant to use instead
Yes, the new Swype is better than stock: larger keys, better recognition and, as you note, double tap brings up alternate word choices. But no need to mess with the beta registration, authentication, etc. You can update to Swype 2.15 here.

(Q) Swype Beta

Does anyone have the exact method for installing Swype Beta on a stock based Rom (i.e. Iced Glacier)? I can't get it to install correctly at all.

But without further chit chat here's what I did:
Using Super Manager I:
1) Mounted the system as r/w.
2) Went into System» App» Deleted the swype.apk
3) went into System»lib» deleted the libswype file
4) Then followed normal install procedures as laid out in Swype Beta using the Swype Installer you receive when signing up for their beta.
It should be noted as with any system file you may or may not need later that its always smart to back up the stock Swype files for future restoring if needed.

yes, I currently running cyanogen I pulled the following from stock, or evil roms..
you ll need two files....
system/app/swype.apk
system/lib/libswypecore.so
Anytime I updated from cyanogen, I would still have swype but received the for close error, until I pulled the libswpecore
hope that helps
edit....think you want to download it from the swype site, enroll in the beta program and you should be good to go, may have to remove the above files to get the beta though
I got it figured out. I'm already enrolled in swype beta, thanks though. The question was how do I install swype beta on a stock based rom, Iced Glacier in this case, in which Swype is a system app(protected if you will). I got it figured out though. If anyone uses swype beta then they know that its much sexier than the stock Swype included lol. But without further chit chat here's what I did:
Using Super Manager I:
1) Mounted the system as r/w.
2) Went into System» App» Deleted the swype.apk
3) went into System»lib» deleted the libswype file

My lib was named libSwypeCore.so not libswype.so. Although that may be because I had / mounted rw but didn't actually delete the files first.
This was really terrifying. Swype is what makes the difference between me needing a phone with a keyboard or not. I find the poke&peck keyboards absolutely unusable.
But I was very envious of the mic button built into the keyboard because I've also found the voice recognition to be shockingly good. Historically I've found voice recognition software to be about 30% accurate and generally produced results one would expect from a slightly retarded monkey.
But I digress. These instructions worked perfectly and the new Swype is even cooler than the stock one.
Swype is an application I would pay a significant amount of money for. But free works too!
Glad to help man

And I hate the white keyboard swype is skinned with from the stock apk.

i did this on my stock rom, and swype basically deactivates itself after the phone is rebooted. swype keyboard will come up, and peck-typing works, but the swyping function is disabled. i've seen this before when playing with swype hacks. it means it's not licensed properly. i removed swype.apk and libswypecore.so manually before doing this.
is yalls swyping functions still working properly after a phone reboot?
I have to select the android keyboard then reselect the swype keyboard on every reboot. I find this is necessary on sense based roms mostly.

So is there any way to get the beta version to properly recognize its license, so you don't have to manually switch away from, and then back to, the beta Swype keyboard after each reboot to get it to work correctly?
Like maybe there's some type of an auto-script that could be written to run on each boot that would select the stock keyboard and then re-select the Swype beta keyboard?
I thought swype comes preinstalled?

The beta version has the microphone button on the keyboard, which is why I want to use that one instead of the pre-installed one...

Swype Beta / Added /system Notifications didn't affect update

Just wanted to pass this along as I asked the question but no one answered it...
I was one of the people selected to test the 4.1.57 update. I had added several notification sounds to my /system file, as well as changed to the beta version of Swype.
For Swype, I used RootExplorer and changed the names of the stock Swype files to .bak. This allowed me to install the beta version of Swype (that I was also signed up to test previously).
Anyway, I got sick of the update notification popping up on my phone so I just ran the update. I did lose root, as everyone knows. However, the custom sounds I added to the /system folder, and the beta version of Swype, are still there and still work, and had no affect on the update. My version in the About Phone page reads "Version.4.1.57.MB860.ATT.en.US" so I did get the update successfully.
Yes, it sucks that root is lost (hopefully temporarily) but it is good to know that you can install sounds and Swype and other apps that need root (to install but not to use) prior to updating and they'll still work after.

issues with swype - eh09 pwgb v. 2.0b3 - please help!!

I am currently running powerwashed gb v 2.0 beta3. It has the stock version of swype (or close to it...) and i hate it. I have disabled it, used antTek file explorer to delete swype.apk in root/sys/app and also the swypecore in root/sys/lib and ALSO the swype folder in data/data. swype is still on my phone. I am confused! My superuser has granted anttek permission and blah blah, but the files will not delete no matter what i try to do. i just want to update to the newest beta version of swype since the stock one is horrible. any help would be greatly appreciated.
I would have posted this in Dev section, but too few posts on my account and it has denied me...
here are my specs
Current Device: Samsung Fascinate
Current ROM: PWGB EH09 ROM v2.0b3
Current Radio: EC09
Current Kernel: Stock EH09 Kernel
Thank you to anyone who can help! And a BIG Thank You to the devs who put this rom together. So far it is the best I have ever used (and i've tried them all...i think... lol) anyway thanks again!
EDIT: Before doing any of this, naturally, i kill the running swype process and delete the swype installer...
Dont post this type of thing in Dev. Section...this has nothing to do with development.
i figured as much. maybe q+a would be better?
btw, do you have any advice for my swype issue?
I used Titanium Backup to remove swype 2. Worked ok for me. Was able to install swype 3 beta after that
Are you giving the program R/W ability within the folder?
Make sure you pick something like Android Keyboard before you try and uninstall.

thank you sir! I actually deleted the anttek file explorer...cuz its no good... paid for root expl. and did just what you said and now i have the excellent swype beta working on my phone! thank you again!
if you think removing swype was a pain...
I replaced the bootanimation.zip in /system/media...and change the name of original bootanimation.zip & still it played original and the new zip had no affect on boot up at all.
I placed a new bootanimation.zip in /data/local and still same result.
I changed the permissions using Terminal Emulator and also tried the same with a file manager to no avail.
I even deleted the original bootanimation zip and also the one I was trying to install and the phone still booted up as if nothing was ever changed. I eventually bumped something on the screen while changing hands when file snooping and maybe deleted something so I reflashed the PWGB rom again and started over.
I have issues with the USB settings magically being set to "Samsung KIES" [almost]everytime I plug it into my PC, even though I set to MASS Storage or ALWAYS ASK before hand.
any fix on that would be appreciated..
OH BY THE WAY, I LOVE THIS PWGB ROM, I REALLY DO!!!!
***********as of 10/21/11 I give up on trying to change the bootanimation... I have spent too long on that project for nothing.
