Not following the forum dailyand with so many versions released, it has become a nightmare keeping track of which Rom is latest or best. I am on jpy which is great, but like all of us I want to go to better. Please post the best stock level rom (excluding gb) for europe. I am sure this will simplify selection for myself and others. In my experience, this are the best stock roms:
For Eclair: JM8 or JM9
For Froyo: only JPY so far
For me, this have been the most stable roms, having the least bugs, and great modem for reception and GPS.
I've tried the newer firmwares like JS5, JS7 and ZSJPG, they are actually a little faster than JPY, but too buggy for me (some market apps not found, swype not supporting spanish, battery drain, etc.).
You can only try yourself and see what you like the most, every time I try some roms I end up going back to JPY, I am just going to stop trying until GB comes.
Thanks for the response which confirmed my suspicion. Its great to be on the latest but not if it does not work properly

No problems so far with js7 in Australia. Best rom for me so far with voodoo enabled.

Many people here, include me, migrated to JS5 and JS7 without any issues, just a faster and smoother device. GPS issues are hardware related and will never be solved unless you buy a new batch phone. Wifii and browsing issues are solved with JS5 / JS7
No battery issues in my case at all

SGS gps hardware might not be the best, but it is also software related, different modems give you different performance for GPS depending on region.
Actually, lots of stuff on this phone work depending on region, like market and samsung apps, even updates, that's why some people get issues and some don't trying same configs.
Can anybody post which is the best stock rom atm?
XXJVU - is blazing fast and the best!
Aren't you mistaken?Don't you mean jvt?
Where can i find JVU?
this is joke sorry
JVR was very solid, I skipped JVS and am now on JVT, so far, this appears to be rock solid on semaphore 1.8rc2. GPS and radio much improved, wake up to 100% charge in the morning, very fast on Ext4 with tweaks. Very happy
Sent using TCP/IP
Try JVT with GTO 2.4 (beta 4) kernel and set lagfix to:
/cache /data and /dbdata to ext2 and /system to ext4.
If you want you can also use supercharger for the best memory settings (stock are quite good too).
Dude, any chance you can place GTO kernel in thread for download? Can it be flashed using sgs flasher? Do I need to convert to rfs first, and if so, how do you then convert to ext4.
Thx

Oops, thx for reminder

I want to flash froyo but i dont want to have to flash back to di18 for any reason. so how stable are these roms? and is EVERYTHING working are they daily drivers?
Could you post the rom you are using.
Just my 0.02ยข but I think the DK17 leak is very stable and I haven't had any problems with it so far.

I've been using froyo as a daily driver. Its been working great. I did have issues with GPS and the camera but after searching the forums I found fixes.
The only thing still bothering is wifi. It works but sometimes I have to go to settings to turn it on.
Sent from Froyo!
Using it as my daily OS. Wouldn't go back to Eclair.
+1 to using DK17 as my everyday. No issues (even GPS) thus far... keeping fingers crossed

Using viper dk17 froyo now. So much better than eclair.
Same as the rest - DK17. No issues, no problems so far.
+1 to DK17
I am using the quamtum rom version 1.5 and it has been rock solid. It performs quite well for me.
Make sure to follow the directions in the posts very carefully. Also keep in mind that you are voiding your warranty and putting yourself in a position of not being able to get support from Samsung or Sprint.
That said if you can read and follow directions you can recover your phone from almost any problem you might encounter and get back to the released Sprint build and recover all of your data. The secret is to not panic. Back up your data before you start.
You also can't guarantee that you won't run into issues with the apps that you depend on. I am using several corporate apps that were designed for earlier editions and all of them run just fine. Depends on what apps you use and how good the developers of the apps were.
Before I start asking my questions I want to say that this is my first android phone and I'm essentially a noob when it comes to rooting/flashing/custom roms etc. so please bear with me. I have been researching pretty heavily, but I'm finding I need some hand holding because my first attempt at rooting/flashing didn't go so well and I'm very reluctant to repeat the process all over again.
I'm currently on the stock DK17 that I flashed through ODIN per instructions found on this page (when it was still DK17, now it's DK28) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
I'm finding that I'm unhappy with this setup and I want to run a custom ROM.
What I want above all else is speed, stability, and better battery life. I don't care about any frills, I want something that's simple, runs smoothly, and most importantly, isn't glitchy. I want to find a ROM that runs great, and once I do, I prefer to stick to it because I don't find flashing very recreational.
Some questions:
Should I update to DK28 or are there a bunch of issues with the leak? Are custom ROMs based off DK17 more reliable/less glitchy?
I used SDX stock app remover to remove a bunch of sprint/stock apps. Will this cause any issues if I decide to flash DK28 (or any other rom)?
I'm planning on using appbrain to "back up" my apps using the 'sync with appbrain' feature. From my understanding I just re-download appbrain and use it to download all the apps I previously had?
So what are my best options taking into account the criteria I mentioned? I was looking at Nebula (custom ROM) and it looks like something promising. I know you guys are thinking "just flash different ROMs and see which one you like you noob" but I'm looking to narrow down my options.
Thanks for any help and sorry for the long post,
-Dennis

Hif you want super stable with great batery life go with the 2.1 EE rom with the pheonix 1.43 kernel. If you want to be on froyo then I highly recoend mammons rom which is based of of the dk28 release which is more stable than dk17.
Removin sprint apps have no afect on flashing custom rms, it only will affect getting OTA's from sprint
Not sure about apbrain since I don't use it myself

Much thanks to my only reply, haha
The most stable Froyo rom is Nebula or Bonsai. Cant go wrong with either.

Nebula
imo
I am testing out the latest ViperROM right now. If you want a solid ROM with a little bit of eye candy, Viper is a good choice.
Nebula !!!
im diggin bonsi, smooth n nice

I would go with mammons. So far its the must stable rom for me. Plus you get froyo!
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic! http://mobilehighway.blogspot.com/
For stability, right now, stick with 2.1. Go with either Syndicate ROM with Xtreme Kernel or Epic Experience with Phoenix Kernel.
Among the Froyo ROMs, I've had the best luck with Epic Experience and Nebula ROM. Viper and Quantum gave me some issues.
I'm going with Nebula as well. It runs great for me.
Dk28 has given me the best results with gps and data speeds. I've been using mammon's rom and its been awesome so far.

The reason everyone is giving you different recommendations is because everyone is a unique individual with different tastes and requirements in what they value in a custom rom. I am currently using Bonsai4all, but have tried most every other rom as well.
As far as not finding flashing recreational just keep doing it and as you become comfortable with the process you will start to like it a lot better. It's fun going to the Sprint store and jabbing away with the support/sales staff about the Epic and Evo while we are flashing new roms while we chat.
I've tried Syndicate, Viper, and Epic Experience (both the Eclair + Froyo versions), and I must say EE has been my favorite of the three.
ROTO,MODACO,ETC....which one you prefer?
Trying to find stabil firmware for my brand new australian tab, can not make my mind yet...
Still looking stabil one and I don't want to upgrade my firmware every weeks for the new firmware add on.
Any advise??
Response for what it's worth
I'm not sure if I'm the one to advise you, but I have just flashed my Optus unlocked tab with Roto JMI v1. Being a noob, I must say that the instructions given worked a treat and the flash went perfectly.
Although it is early days, iot seems pretty good to me with an improvement in wifi which was fairly random previously, but I still have some testing to do on the GPS. Others on the developers forum seem to have no problem though.

For me I like the Modaco Roms and Kernal. His roms are great on my other android stuff as well.

Wifi seems to be solved for me with JMIv1.0. No dropouts. For the GPS you might try the FasterFix from this topic. That works great for me.
I prefer the Roto-roms above those of Modaco. The Roto's are most a kind of 'out of the box' roms, and can be used without doing some really tweaking like the Modaco's. But just try them both and compare the difference, feels and looks.
I have tried both and they are great compared to stock rom. Below is my conclusion(solely on my experince of flashing roms for 1 month now.
Roto
- easy to flash
- good speed
- clean wipe with minimal add ons so we are free to add what we want
Modoco
- flash can be difficult and need to poke around and do some mistakes first
- blazing speed, getting constant 1800+ in quadrant
- got everything working good in my asian gsm tab
- auto connect/disconnect between wifi and data which is good
- love the reboot option on power button

I have tried the GPS fix, but no luck, and I think the Wifi issue is much more to do with my router than Roto's great work. I think I'll try JMEv4 as I jumped straight to JMI.

Well, I didn't go back to JME, I tried JMI v2 which has just been released by Rotohammer.
The short answer. for me, is that everything went smooth again, and is working well except for the GPS which just refuses to work.

I update my SGS I9000 two days ago to JV1 and so far there are only but problems. For example low ram, quick temp rising, slow loading time, lots of lags, and have removed the battery more than 20 times to make it work and a couple of non-booting problems...
edited : sorry wrong forum .
thanks man didnt know that (should have noticed though)
You do understand it is BETA right? alot of people do not understand this.... it means its in a testing stage and from posts 2.3.2 is at a very early stage.
No **** you have problems! Did you read the information accompanying the firmware leak? It clearly indicated that it was a early BETA firmware that will have issues.
Try webstar1 rom. Stable and smooth.

Have you tried to reinstall and factory reset? I installed JV1 and it's great. Fast and smooth.
this leaked version of gingerbread must be labeled as "test only" version.
you better wait for the final 2.3
obviously its a beta firmware, i reverted back to XWJS5. cannot stand the lags and hangs.
ps. u dont need to take out the battery, just press and hold the power button until it restart.
Beta .....
stop complaining dude. Its just a beta. i flashed it, experienced it, had some issues, flashed back to JS5 quietly. Thats it
And for ur satisfaction, yes there were heating issues. Thats the only reason y i switched back to JS5 otherwise i didnt had lag or any such other issue
The lag is because this ROM does not kill processes to free RAM as agreesively as the others. Go to the RAM tab on program monitor and do it yourself.
I've been running this ROM for 4 days and I don't see it so beta, I've seen cooked ROMs much worse than this. Most of the issues (swype, RAM management, Samsung apps not showing), have solutions that let's hope will be on the official version.
I don't mind if Samsung developers read this forum and use us as beta testers. This ROM could end being very good if they correct some stupid bugs and omissions.

A good point was made though, Samfirmware should clearly differentiate between firmware which is possibly beta, and firmware which is considered stable enough by Samsung to officially release it. Even better, they should link to forums discussing each ROM (and compile the known issues).
That would allow people to choose the latest known-stable rom easier.

Ha Ha here we go again, all Samsung firmware should be labeled as a "test only" version.
When we first got the phone and eclair ran like **** we excused it because it was a new device,
When the froyo leaks came and it ran like **** we excused it because it was beta.
When the official froyo came and it ran like **** we excused it because surely Samsung is just focusing on Gingerbread and that will be great.
Lets just call it like it is: Samsung does not know how to write a proper firmware for a mobile phone. Samsung's Gingerbread will suck hairy balls just like the roms before it

I have installed a custom ICS GS ROM, and this has not made any difference (Except ICS is sweet!).

Can u write some more about it ?
I heard that Nexus has a great GPS but is it really possible to change some files and get the same quality on SGS ?
Isn't it a matter of hardware ?
Please write what files to write and where. Thanks.

Here you find a tweak built on Nexus GPS-files.

Remember to make backup before applying, and READ how to adjust settings AFTER injecting Nexus files.

You may ask Google to find this.

Had no GPS with ICS (TWICS).
After using FasterFix (Market) it works fine.
Success
This may not help you at this point, but I finally have performance I thought I should have when bought this phone in 2010.
Updated to stock Froyo in 2011, then stock Gingerbread in 2012. But didn't get performance until doing factory reset to clear data and apps.
Gps locks in under 10 seconds typical instead of 100 or so.
Mode set to MS-based default. I changed to Standalone, and performance same, but need to play some more to know if this will always work well.
Everything is snappier than ever - great feeling.
I am having issues with gps too since i installed ICS rom i think.
I have find installed GPS AIDS, donate version, makes it quite better. Try it
