How do you delete messages out of the trash folder in the gmail app?
All I see are commands for making it read/unread, or refiling it into another folder... but I can't find anyway to delete them out of the trash.
Also the one's that get moved to the trash (by me) on my Xoom won't show up in my trash folder in my iphone.. which is odd to me, so i can't even use my iphone to delete these messages if i put them in the trash folder on my Xoom...
I hate having 920348432534 messages in my trash.
Any help will be appreciated.

Does anyone know?
lol... is it a missing feature? I was hoping I was just being slightly naive and missing a button somewhere.

It can be done.
Select message(s) (Long press)
Select icon that shows angled envelope over a horizontal bar.

That doesn't delete it, it archives it... if i do that then go to "All Mail" it's still there.

Actually it's just sticking back in my inbox and popping up a new message notification.
Probably not there on purpose as it goes against the Gmail way of doing things. They don't want you to delete anything.

Well this would be a mistake. Cause it would make me have to go on a computer everytime i want to clear my trash... Which for me is quite frequently...
I don't know about anyone else, but when i want something deleted i don't want it to go to another folder and infinitely sit there... what's the point of deleting then?
doesn't gmail periodically empty the trash folder?
They might... and if that's what i have to rely on, i guess that will have to do.
I was just wanting to find out if i was missing something, or if the feature is actually missing. And it looks like it's missing.
which is a little irritating, but whatever.
The desktop version of Gmail deletes Trash messagse when they're 30 days old. That naturally deletes them from your Xoom's Gmail app, as well.
If there's a way to empty the trash any earlier from the Gmail app, I haven't found it.
This made me look at my gmail folder . I found that on in my evo/xoom/gmail.com all 3 trash folders were the same (all emails found in all 3 places). Every email i deleted from either of the 3 was automatically deleted from the other two. The only way to permanently delete them is from the website (on your computer or xoom). Or just wait 30 days...haha.

So just picked up my atrix from costoc, coming from a BB 8310 and I'm already fully overwhelmed by this phone.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some good starter tutorial material, what bloatware I can/want to delete (im sure most if not all of it), etc.
Basically need a place to start. So far I've looked at google maps and snapped a few pictures, plugged in the HDMI to see the pics on my TV, and linked my google account....so now what haha
LOL well the first thing I always do is find a good launcher; there are a lot of them outbthat, in my opiniojn, ar3all better and offer more customizability than the moto launcher.
After that, I set up my calendar so it syncs to my phone as well.
Twitter, Facebook, and a new browser and you're pretty much set.
What in particular are you looking for? I'd (and I'm sure others here) would be happy to help.

Initially looking for what to take off I would say (not interested in any of the BS stuff moto puts on there, just not sure what I should be getting rid of and what should remain. I'll hold off on root for awhile just until I get more familiar.)
After that, mostly just basic stuff that people like to tweak a little here and there. There are so many options and functions I could spend days just sorting through them all.
One thing I noticed right away that I think was mentioned here or another board before, I added my google account to sync contact, email, and calendar...however I now seem to have EVERY person I've emailed, even random craigslist people that I spoke with once or twice, in my contacts. I'd really like to get it to sync only people that are an actual contact.
OK well pertaining to the applications, I deleted everything that was on there that I could; wasn't all if it but a lot of stuff could be.
For the contacts problem, to go settings, accounts, and click on the email addresses. Deselect contacts.
At this point it wont sync them anymore and you can delete them from the contacts.
You can also hit the menu key and choose different views for which contacts you want to see.

Just go to Contacts, hit the menu key and go to Settings. There will be a checkbox for "Phone Number's Only". Select that and the ones without phone numbers will go away.
Also, get ADW.Launcher or Launcher Pro. Figure out which one you like better and then upgrade to the paid version. I have ADW Launcher EX and I use it in all the android phones I've had since I bought it. They are so much better and more flexible than the built in launchers.
you dont need to delete anything since its not doing anything if you are not using it. Get apps like "whats app" and "pingchat" which work like BBM. Use launcher pro and customize your home screen. Download some games and emulators

Found the setting you described so hopefully that helps, will I need to manually delete all "extra" contacts that got synced previously? Also, would there be a way either stock or by 3rd party app to only sync people listed as actualy contacts in my gmail account? I have about 300 or so in my actual contacts list in gmail on the webpage, but a few of them that I do use are email contacts only so I would still want to sync those.
Also for syncing in general, does the computer or phone override? So say I delete a contact on my phone, will it delete from my gmail contacts list as well when i get into gmail on my comp, and vice versa?
Concerning synching in general, it goes both ways
Oh a word of advice, if you delete something on your calander on the phone, it is deleted from the cloud (and desktop) calender as well.
So I would suggest to delete all things on the computer if you can; I have my classes set up perfectly and I deleted all next week on spring break and it didn't give me aby options for that week; effectively deleting everything after that.

The phone will push newer data back out to the network. So if you change it on your phone, it will update to google, and vice versa.
I believe the "newer" data will always trump.
It should only push in contacts who are in your gmail contacts, so if you want email addresses only on some of them, then uncheck the box I mentioned earlier and just delete the contacts you don't want out of the google contacts listings.
It shouldn't list a bunch of contacts outside of that unless you have them as facebook/twitter friends and have those sync'd as well with contacts. (application settings)

Both good to know. I like the "newest" action being the overriding factor, so I can change from either location.
Looks like selecting the "only phone numbers" got rid of the extra stuff, but not sure what other contacts were email only I may have now omitted, have to look into it further.
Going to DL some "stuff" now haha
Check out some youtube videos. There's some great ones released by google themselves that can save you some frustration

This thing is annoying me for a while now in froyo and gingerbread and to my surprise Honeycomb is lacking a "Select all" option in the email app (not sure about GMAIL).
The regular email app is missing select all. So lets say you want to clean up your Trash folder with 500+ deleted emails you have to sit there and select them one by one.
You will think an "empty this folder" or "Empty Trash" option will be there to save your day but yeap this option is missing too...

You're preaching to the choir here. Since this is a stock google experience device we get what google gives us and their email application is great but that one feature simply hangs out of reach again and again.
I'm hoping that some day they impliment this.
Here's a dirty alternative: Delete your account and re-add it. It's (presumably) synchronized from a server right? All your mail, contacts and calendar items will come back but your trash will be gone
Just upgraded to ICS, added my Exchange account in stock email. At the first refresh, I see the subfolders, as soon as the refresh is complete, all subfolders disappear. Tried the usual, removed account and added it back, no difference. When I select a message and click the Move To Folder icon, the subfolder list appears there.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Could I be the only one with this issue?
The same here... no subfolders!
No you are not!
In GB the Samsung stock Mail sucked, but now its horrible!
Subfolders not showing up indeed and it looks crappy.
On my MotoDefy I am running Cyanogenmod 9 with the Google stockmail and I love it.
Why did Samsung left us with this inferieur mail app!
I do not want to root right now due tot the hardbrick problems with ICS... what options are left?
Have not found any real good sutitute on Google Play Store for Google stock Mail. Too fancy, to laggy or just far to expensive so far.
I have no such problem. Just click the menu button and then select folders. I see mine just fine.

Its not about the folders, dut subfolders in the folders
I installed a trial version of Touchdown and it can see my subfolders (the damn thing costs $20). I feel like going back to GB, is this possible? Am I going to screw up anything? The battery drain is noticeable, for the first time ever since I've had my Note, I heard a low-battery beep before the end of the working day. Coincidence?

I have no issues with sub folders.
You need to go to options (left hardware key).
Folders -->
Just click on the icon of the INBOX and it opens the list of sub folders for Inbox.
Similarly click on the ICON of the other folders such as Sent, etc for their sub f olders if any.
Okay, here's the problem. I have been touching the icon and nothing happened. Just got it to work by long pressing it and waiting about 2 seconds. It's a pretty bad lag. I have a lot of folders...?
ETA: Doing *anything* is slow. Much slower than GB. Deletes take 2 seconds each. Spinning wheel while inbox opens. This is for an Exchange mailbox.

I've been using the left hardware key and selecting Folders, the only folders which show up are the default ones (Sent, Draft, Outbox etc) By long pressing on the Inbox folder, even for a couple of seconds, I get a menu option to Open, Add Folders, Sync Options.
Update: fixed problem, click the Inbox ICON, not the label "Inbox" when selecting Folders.

i loved the stock email all the time . maybe am not that extensive user anyway but seriously i have no trouble with the exchange account that i have . maybe cuz i use a hotmail one ? who knows ?!!!!
Replaced Samsung email app bij the Google stock email app
The samsung e-mail app works to laggy for me.
I found en nice solution. Just follow two treads:
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26036984&postcount=1
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25102714&postcount=18
The first one gives me a temporary root with a kind of temprary ClockWorkMod (I dit not instaal the RootUser - SU Busybox - BTW)
The second during the CWM session I installed ICS_EmailGoogle_update.zip.
Nice thing is.... its all reversable, no trianges or conuters end no ROM upgrades.
Works like a charm!
Now mij Note on ICS is like I want it!!
I installed the K-9 email app on my tablet. It seemed like the native app (titled 'Email') was causing some syncing problems, so I disabled it, or so I thought. When I realized that the syncing issue was probably not related to the Email app, I went to reactivate it, but I could not find it anywhere; I looked in Settings > Apps > All, but didn't find it.
I'm not sure what happened, though I'm pretty darn sure I didn't uninstall the app (someone on another thread said you can't uninstall the native Android/Google-supplied apps only disable them)
So can anyone take a stab and telling me what may have happened here? And how I might be able to get the app reinstalled on my Tablet.
As an aside, there are some things that I really like about K-9 email app over the native one, mostly that it has a 'select all' feature, so I can more easily select emails in the Trash folder to delete them. The native app only let you select emails one at a time--even in the Trash and Spam folders--which was a royal pain in the toosh. One downside to K-9 is it doesn't seem that the Trash folder is synced up to the Trash folder on my ISP's server. I can delete emails in the trash folder in K-9, but they are still waiting there for me when I view them back on my PC in either webmail or in Thunderbird. Not sure why this is happening, but it only seems to be true for the Trash folder.
Best, David

If all you did was disable the app from the App Info page, you'll find it in one of two places.
a) If you're running Android 4.3, the furthest list to the right in the Apps settings menu will be Disabled apps.
b) If you're not, then scroll to the very bottom of the list and you should see any disabled apps there.
Re-installing Email app
Thanks for info. I did look in the apps 'all' list and Email is not there, so it looks like--despite my best intentions--I did delete the app. I wonder if there's a way of re-installing it? From what I've read, it is not an app that's been made available on its own by Google. Maybe there's a place I can request it?
In the mean time, I still have K-9 email app, which is working, but has some quirks to it.

That really shouldn't be possible. The stock e-mail app is installed to /system, so you can roll back any (of the non-existent) updates or disable it, but not uninstall it by default. What exactly are you running on your tablet right now?
Use a file explorer (ES File Explorer) and navigate to the /system/app directory and check to see if the email apk is there. If not, then you must somehow have uninstalled it. If that's the case, then here are the links to Email.apk and Exchange2.apk. Move them to /system/app and set permission to rw-r--r--

I'm using the gmail app right now, but I'm trying to switch over to the stock app to take advantage of the aod email notifications (for the time being anyway....). I'm not sure if i'm missing something or I'm the biggest noob around or what, but I can't seem to archive new gmail messages from the inbox or the stock email app. My options are swipe right: Move,Set Reminder,Unread,Reply ... swipe left: Delete. I noticed if I move messages, I have to select a folder to put them in. This marks then as read, however, I would like to simply archive my messages and have them appear in 'All Messages' without having a label attached to them. Is this possible and I'm totally missing something? Or is this just gonna happen? I realize this is more of a standard email client, but given the amount of gmail accounts out there, this is something I would expect would be available for a google email account. I will stick to the Gmail app for now, but would be nice to know, even just to get the oad notifications, thanks.
ps - I searched the forums first, but if I missed the answer already, sorry.
tldr: Archive in Samsung mail client ... where is it?
Don't think you are going to get it with the stock app. However, when Nougat rolls out for the S7 I am hoping the AOD will also update to show all notifications.

Albeit a little late to reply to you, but I ran into the same issue.
The answer basically is that in Gmail terms, archiving a message means removing all tags from it.
You can do this on the Samsung mail app by "moving" it to "all messages" folder...it sucks, I know

It's the same as on iPhones I think, where a gmail account on their default email client app will go straight to delete.
Moreover, as Yahoo app does the same (I think), the outlier might actually be Gmail which doesn't let you delete, but only archive emails.
