[Q] Reinstallilng native 'email' app on Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed the K-9 email app on my tablet. It seemed like the native app (titled 'Email') was causing some syncing problems, so I disabled it, or so I thought. When I realized that the syncing issue was probably not related to the Email app, I went to reactivate it, but I could not find it anywhere; I looked in Settings > Apps > All, but didn't find it.
I'm not sure what happened, though I'm pretty darn sure I didn't uninstall the app (someone on another thread said you can't uninstall the native Android/Google-supplied apps only disable them)
So can anyone take a stab and telling me what may have happened here? And how I might be able to get the app reinstalled on my Tablet.
As an aside, there are some things that I really like about K-9 email app over the native one, mostly that it has a 'select all' feature, so I can more easily select emails in the Trash folder to delete them. The native app only let you select emails one at a time--even in the Trash and Spam folders--which was a royal pain in the toosh. One downside to K-9 is it doesn't seem that the Trash folder is synced up to the Trash folder on my ISP's server. I can delete emails in the trash folder in K-9, but they are still waiting there for me when I view them back on my PC in either webmail or in Thunderbird. Not sure why this is happening, but it only seems to be true for the Trash folder.

If all you did was disable the app from the App Info page, you'll find it in one of two places.
a) If you're running Android 4.3, the furthest list to the right in the Apps settings menu will be Disabled apps.
b) If you're not, then scroll to the very bottom of the list and you should see any disabled apps there.

Re-installing Email app
Thanks for info. I did look in the apps 'all' list and Email is not there, so it looks like--despite my best intentions--I did delete the app. I wonder if there's a way of re-installing it? From what I've read, it is not an app that's been made available on its own by Google. Maybe there's a place I can request it?
In the mean time, I still have K-9 email app, which is working, but has some quirks to it.

That really shouldn't be possible. The stock e-mail app is installed to /system, so you can roll back any (of the non-existent) updates or disable it, but not uninstall it by default. What exactly are you running on your tablet right now?

Use a file explorer (ES File Explorer) and navigate to the /system/app directory and check to see if the email apk is there. If not, then you must somehow have uninstalled it. If that's the case, then here are the links to Email.apk and Exchange2.apk. Move them to /system/app and set permission to rw-r--r--

Just got Atrix: Need help with bloatware, etc.

So I just got my Atrix in the mail, and I'll create a MotoBlur account, but I really don't want to use it. I'm experienced with Android and I will DL LauncherPro but I hear that Blur still runs in the background. ("Has its tenticles deeper than just the launcher)
I don't want to root just yet, but how can I go about taking back control over the phone. What's the easiest way to remove most of the bloatware, and how can I make it so MotoBlur doesn't waste my battery and data plan? I don't want it to sync all my social stuff for me. That's what Pure Messenger is for.
Oh and do any cases fit in the car dock?
Was thinking about just deleting all the widgets, but I'm sure it'd still be trying to sync.

Just don't set up any accounts under the MotoBlur section in Accounts and use third party apps for things like FB and Yahoo. Also, you can just go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications and uninstall all the bloatware. It really doesn't uninstall them from the phone but they won't be running or taking up RAM and CPU, basically freezing them. Don't use any of the Moto apps or widgets either because they require you setup accounts under the MotoBlur section.
OK. So what you're saying is to create a Blur when I first boot the phone up, then go to account settings and delete it? Or just set it to no sync?

No, you need a Blur account to use the phone but you don't need to associate any of your email or social accounts to it. When you go into Accounts it will be broken into two different sections, MotoBlur accounts up top and Other Accounts on the bottom. Do not set up any accounts under the MotoBlur section, just leave it as is. Obviously set up your Google account at the bottom and then download apps from the market to use for other social and email accounts. Don't even bother going back to "Accounts", just use your apps. And again, don't use the "Messaging" and "Social Networking" either because they are associated with Blur. Don't bother with any Motorola widgets either. You'll already have the Gmail app and a "Text Messaging" app in the drawer.

Wait, are you saying to get rid of Data enabled as well? (enable data access over mobile network)
Wouldn't that then not allow you to sync with gmail over the AT&T network?
Also, how much harm does enabling background data in the settings do? I thought it was just a 'global settings' thing so that it allows for sync?

Right, sorry, just deselect whats under the "Application data delivery" in Settings>Data Manager>Data Delivery
I need some help transfering my stuff...
I've been trying all day and all I've managed is a couple of apps using AppBrain sync.
My google contacts didn't sync either...
Could somebody list out the easiest way to transfer everything? Including:
- Music
- Gameloft Games
- Regular apps and their data
- Contacts
- Pictures and video
I have a feeling using my computer as the vector to transfer would be the best idea for some like the music.

Go to market, download soft "SystemApp Remover" and remove any bloatware you want.

Well, you can use the built in app manager to "uninstall" the bloatware on the Atrix and the OP has already said he does NOT want to root yet. But if he did I would suggest using Titanium and freeze the apps so you could get OTA updates in the future.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=972459
easiest way to deal with bloatware is to root your phone using superoneclick and then use BloatFreezer to freeze any of the motoblur services (its highly recommended you get another Home before freezing motoblur). BloatFreezer only costs a dollar, while titanium backup is close to $4, use whichever one you want, but i highly recommend BloatFreezer if all you want to do is freeze applications.

Google Calendar

I hope someone can help me. I've rooted, added Gapps without a problem. I just can't get my Google Contacts to show up.
Is there anyway you do this. I have tried a few Contact.apks to no avail. I've set permissions.
What do you all think?
Thank you,
John
You don't seem to be able to use the Google Contacts app, it doesn't work because it has phone hooks that aren't available on the KF (unless there is a tablet specific version which I haven't seen). You'll need to use the built in Contacts app, which will sync fine with Google if you have the sync adapter.
Here is the version I ripped off my phone - GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk, drop this in /system/app, and set the permissions to rw-r--r--
You are my hero. . . for today. Unless CM7 comes out today.
If you have an Android phone, there are a lot of files you can test out in your KF. I moved a couple files from my Droid 3 to the KF to increase functionality. Including the CalendarSyncService.
Slightly off topic but does anybody know what files handle the "Add shortcut" option in the CarDock? I tried a couple of the Application... files but none worked. Thanks!
One other thing to mention that I've found a fix for is that as well as syncing just "My Contacts", it also syncs "Other Contacts" as well. Other contacts are people you've sent emails to that aren't necessarily in your contacts list already. I just didn't care to see these on my KF, so there is a two step process for getting rid of them if you so desire.
1. Tick and then delete all the "Other Contacts" via the Gmail web interface, making sure that any of the ones you need to keep are created in "My Contacts".
2. In Mail Settings under the General tab there is a setting called "Create contacts for auto-complete". Set this to "I'll add contacts myself".
This should clear the Kindle Fire (assuming you have added the sync apk mentioned above) of the rouge contacts and ensure that any new ones don't get a Contact added under "Other Contacts".
Has anyone gotten this working for the Google Calendar app?
There was some sort of Amazon Calendar.apk and CalendarProvider.apk in the system app folder but I overwrote those with the Google ones from my phone. Maybe I need those original files to get it to work? Can anyone pull them from their system/app folder and upload a copy?

Yup, it's working perfectly. Grab the two .apk's from this post and follow the instructions.
Did you rename the google .apks, or just chose to replace the existing Amazon ones when tyring to install? Sorry, I would pull the original Amazon ones for you but I'm at work and left my KF at home. If they're not up by the time I get home I'll put them up.

Here's the CalendarProvider.apk and for some reason I don't have an AmazonCalendar.apk in /system/app. My /data folder is completely empty (unrooted, so idk if that's why it's empty) so it may be in there. Maybe someone else can post that one? If not I'll root again tonight or tomorrow and post it for you.
Sorry, I'm not gonna have time right now. Oh, and btw this is the first time I've tried pulling an .apk off the KF so please let me know if I didn't do it correctly.
It worked, thank you!
Cool, glad I could help.

Btw, I don't care much for it because I use the Calendar most in Agenda view, but does your month view look like this with an orange Android?
Edit: Nvm, there was a copy of calendar.apk in system/app that wasn't supposed to be there and removing that fixed it

Woah, no it doesn't. It's just the standard month view.
tried this and follow every step, still can't get contacts and calendar to sync.
gmail doens't really sync either, have to manually refresh each time. is it because I have an account set up under the default email client?
I have copied the calendar sync adapter and contacts sync adapter to /system/app and chmod 0644 it. then i rebooted and installed calendar.apk normally. doesn't appear to work.
gmail I have the option for sync for my email set to on, but I don't think it's working.
Am I missing something? Market is working fine, apps install normally.
Are you sure that the permissions for the GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk and GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk files in system/app look like this..?

It's Root Explorer (a must have for root users).

For Calendar: When you go into Menu>More>Calendars are the calendars your trying to sync visible and synced? It took a few minutes for my events to properly load up.
Gmail: From inbox, Menu>Accounts>Menu>Account settings>[email protected] and make sure Gmail is selected (as well as any other google servies you want synced). My gmail was turned off initially. I also made the mistake of thinking Menu>More>Settings was the only sync option for gmail.

My experience is, after setting amazon's default e-mail app,
gmail.app also can use contacts.
But I don't know which one app works.
Maybe either GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk or amazon contacts works.
Does anyone get a grey bar at the top of their Google Calendar that partially covers the first row of dates in the month view and the midnight hour block in the other views? How do I get rid of it?
I am also struggling with calendar sync. My other apps recognize my account (gmail/reader/music), but my calendars don't show up in settings.
Device is rooted, permissions applied, and contacts are synced.

Gmail stuck in outbox

I have an N7 3g. I'm using MoDaCa's JR-4. Outgoing emails continually get stuck in the outbox and don't go out. I think it has something to do with N7. I have never had this problem with other android cell phones, PC, etc.
Is there a solution?
Thanks
I have had this problems on phones before, but not yet on the N7 *knocks on wood.
First I would check your sync settings to make sure all is appropriate.
The way I was able to remedy the situation was to either uninstall gmail, and reinstall, or just uninstall the latest update. I haven't had that fail me yet. You could also try clearing data, cache, and force stop the app from settings first.
(may require reboot after)
Good luck!
i had this issue in Gmail today on the N7 running a CM 10.1 nightly. i used to see this a lot as well on Gingerbread, and uninstalling the app/clearing data in the app does work but makes you lose the draft you had written(which sucks if it was a long one!). i used to solve it by clicking reply and creating a dummy message in the same thread, saving that message as a draft, then going into my drafts folder and the message that got stuck would have an option to send... or something like that, and that worked. however, i couldn't seem to get it to work today, on Gmail 4.1.2 fortunately my stuck message today was small, so i just cleared data in the app and rewrote it, and it did send then.
You could also just highlight the whole draft and copy, then paste when done. It should be copied to your clip board and not the gmail app. I suppose it is always safer to save it somewhere before deleting, though I would think if you were going to do that, you would want to save the copy in a different app like ever note.

I'll try that here on Jelly Bean next time, but that actually wasn't possible before. When the message got stuck sending, it was in a limbo state where the text of the message wasn't accessible to be copied! I definitely tried that because i lost some pretty long drafts!

I have rolled back gmail to the earlier version several times but it keeps updating behind my back and emails become stuck in the outbox again. Also, although I'm currently using JR-4, I have CM-10, PA, and stock rooted ROMS nandroided. I could restore any of them and test, but I'm pretty certain it's ubiquitous. It's either the gmail app or android 4.21.
Also, I have a Galaxy Note 2. 2 versions of gmail are installed: 1.0 and 4.21, and emails don't get stuck. N7 only has has 4.21 installed. Why doesn't N7 also have 1.0 installed?
Also, I just cleared cache and data and the email is resynching. I'm certain that the problem will return. I love the N7, but this is really annoying.

Is there a particular version of Gmail that works better? If so, have you gone into your market settings and disabled automatic updating? I've been running the 4.1.2 version for a long time now, and it never updates to 4.2. I also disabled update notifications so it doesn't bug me at all.
But yeah, it's an annoying issue. Sometimes i turn to K9 Mail, as it works great for Gmail accounts. Plus i love the dark theme option. In the end i like the way native Gmail synchs tho.

Thanks for your help. How can I downgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.1.2? I think that will work until Google addresses this issue. The Disable link inside "App Info" used to show this downgrade capability. However, that text was probably there when I was using a different Rom. I have MoDaCa JR-4 running now and I think I want to keep it.
I think if you flashed a ROM that came with 4.2, you won't have the option to uninstall updates. In any case, i posted 4.1.2 in the 3rd to last post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005006. You can just uninstall 4.2 and install 4.1.2 if you wish. I will warn you tho, I did have the stuck sending issue yesterday, but I think that was the first time.

Bad news 4.1.2 emails are now stuck in outbox.
This happens because Google wants to take over your e-mail service; in other words you must be using your Android or smartphone's e-mail app instead of Google's GMAIL App. There are two fixes to this problem, first is to download Goggle's GMAIL App and use that for email communication; and second is to ask google to allow 'less secure' apps i.e. non-google to access your e-mails (i know!) Here are the steps for the second option:
Allowing less secure apps to access your account
Google may block sign-in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safe.
Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:
The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 6 or below
The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird
Change account access for less secure apps
To help keep Google Apps users' accounts secure, we may block less secure apps from accessing Google Apps accounts. As a Google Apps user, you will see a "Password incorrect" error when trying to sign in. If this is the case, you have two options:
Option 1: Upgrade to a more secure app that uses the most up to date security measures. All Google products, like Gmail, use the latest security measures.
Option 2: Change your settings to allow less secure apps to access your account. We don't recommend this option because it might make it easier for someone to break into your account. If you want to allow access anyway, follow these steps:
Go to the "Less secure apps" section in My Account.
Next to "Access for less secure apps," select Turn on. (Note to Google Apps users: This setting is hidden if your administrator has locked less secure app account access.)
If you still can't sign in to your account, the "password incorrect" error might be caused by a different reason.

Stock email app - archive gmail messages

I'm using the gmail app right now, but I'm trying to switch over to the stock app to take advantage of the aod email notifications (for the time being anyway....). I'm not sure if i'm missing something or I'm the biggest noob around or what, but I can't seem to archive new gmail messages from the inbox or the stock email app. My options are swipe right: Move,Set Reminder,Unread,Reply ... swipe left: Delete. I noticed if I move messages, I have to select a folder to put them in. This marks then as read, however, I would like to simply archive my messages and have them appear in 'All Messages' without having a label attached to them. Is this possible and I'm totally missing something? Or is this just gonna happen? I realize this is more of a standard email client, but given the amount of gmail accounts out there, this is something I would expect would be available for a google email account. I will stick to the Gmail app for now, but would be nice to know, even just to get the oad notifications, thanks.
ps - I searched the forums first, but if I missed the answer already, sorry.
tldr: Archive in Samsung mail client ... where is it?
Don't think you are going to get it with the stock app. However, when Nougat rolls out for the S7 I am hoping the AOD will also update to show all notifications.

Albeit a little late to reply to you, but I ran into the same issue.
The answer basically is that in Gmail terms, archiving a message means removing all tags from it.
You can do this on the Samsung mail app by "moving" it to "all messages" folder...it sucks, I know
Well, I'm not 100% to your liking, but I did not use either both gmail or samsung mail. I switched to bluemail. If you want, you should try

Jut be aware of the possible security issues using BlueMail

It's the same as on iPhones I think, where a gmail account on their default email client app will go straight to delete.
Moreover, as Yahoo app does the same (I think), the outlier might actually be Gmail which doesn't let you delete, but only archive emails.

Problems with Oneplus 6T and Outlook for Android

I have Outlook for Android on my Oneplus 6T running stock OS rooted. For some reason I am unable to set gmail as my default mail app. I can disable Outlook and than I can change it. How do I stop Outlook from forcing me to use it as default? No, I cannot remove Outlook. I need it for work. I want to know how to prevent the app from taking over without my permission.

Sounds to me like you said yes somewhere to a post installation prompt to set as default app. You can either go into settings>apps & notifications> default apps and clear it... Or you could go to outlook's app settings specifically and clear it or just clear the apps storage data/cache and start over.

At no point did I allow it and at no point did it ask. I even uninstalled it, clearing out all data, and reinstalled it. Before even opening it the first time it has already taken over the setting and won't allow me to change it. You cannot clear it's defaults in settings because it is greyed out.

Did you add Google account to Outlook app instead of just signing in with Outlook email?... That's only thing I can think of. Why not just use 3rd party email handler? I always use this one in the screenshot.

I am using a work Office 365 email account. That is the only account I use with it. It even takes over the setting without anything set up in the app, so it wouldn't be that.
I have removed all Microsoft apps from my device because of this.

3rd party app dude, that's all I can say... There's like a hundred of them.
Did your work 360 account have special security measurements in place? Mine does!
so, as a example, I have to set outlook as device admin if i want to use it on my device, maybe it's something like that. Delete the work account and just set up your Google and a test account from another mail provider, just to check if you can set ur Google account as ur default

No, I never had to set it as device admin. I want my gmail app as default, but M$ thinks they know best and want their app to be default. Google should put something in that refuses to allow this, if the user doesn't want it. I have just removed it completely. I will not have an app that takes control like that.

I understand your concern but there isn't really an issue with it being your default. Any account ot email you like can be added to either app and you can also launch either to set defaults. I have a 5T myself with outlook as I use it for college and it doesn't take over. This would likely mean that it was something you had done in the past without meaning to. Things that could fix this considering you already tried uninstalling an app is reflashing your software assuming you're on OOS or just factory resetting your device. I don't believe Outlook is the issue here as I have 2 of the exact same email apps on my device and I don't have this problem

It is a concern and an issue when an app takes over settings like this. This is the only app I have seen that does it. Doesn't matter if I can just use it as is without issue. It should not force me to use their app as default, or even just force it to be set as default. That is what malware does. Forcing changes that the user didn't approve is wrong. I have notice this even after flashing back to complete stock, no root, and wiping data. I bet if you look in the settings you will find it default, regardless of it actually acting as default.

Google isn't offering up a virus to your phone. However, there are no defaults set in my settings for it. Stock fw does set unnecessary defaults I've noticed this on any stock software. You may want to consider choosing your software as you have a wonderful device with this capability. It is strange to me though that an app like that could change those things without your permission without also doing other things especially when I've never experienced an issue

You can see no defaults here. Keep in mind I'm not on OOS.

That isn't where you would see this issue. That is setting the app as default for certain urls. Go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > Default Apps > Mail App.

As I had stated before stock can set unecessary defaults there's no reason to even have a default mail as both work without that process or permission. Any picture or message etc. Can be shared with the app no need for defaults. This is an odd occurrence but as you can see here the default is no where to be seen for me even though I have the same mail applications as you.

Well, than that is because your ROM doesn't use the Mail App default. I am using OOS, and it does. The issue still remains that an app should not be able to force itself to default and not let the user change it. Malware behavior at it's finest.

I do very much agree with you although, there are ways to fix your issue but if you wish to remain on OOS then try taking it up with Microsoft and see what the issue is. Could be your right. I'm very unsure.

We both know Microsoft won't care. They think they know what is best and force their will on people. I removed the app, so issue is gone.
