Xoom difference between US & UK - Xoom General

I am going over to the states monday and wondered if there was any difference in hardware as the UK version is £100 more expensive?
any reason apart from the different power connector?
should I buy one when I am over there or wait until I'm back I'm not to worried about waiting more about the cash

If you buy the us version you won't be able to use 3g in the uk as the radio is incompatable. So you should compare price with the uk wifi version.

good to know
thanks

Yup, US version are CDMA and won't work in UK.
Also best to wait till the UK version comes out - will probably have Flash support out of the box, and may be even cheaper given rumors that poor sales may prompt a price drop.
Either way should be out in the UK in next 2-3 weeks and you'll get a choice of WiFi only as well... my advice is wait

I assume all non power accessories are universal etc as the uk and us price is identical $ to £ ~40% reduction

USD240 is absolutely fake.
here brand new HD in China is around 527USD. just for reference.
JohnQ is right, I bought mine for around $550 US in Shenzhen about a week ago, $240 is probably either used or a "shanzhai" phone (aka rip off look-a-like).
A note however, do look closely at what you are buying as there aren't any "official" HTC retailers here in China-- where HTC operates under it's Chinese subsidary, "Dopod". Most of the HTC phones in China are brought across the border either from Hong Kong or Taiwan.
I had the store clerk bring me five Touch HDs to try and I picked the best one and haggled with them until they threw in an extra battery.
If you'd rather be sure to get the real thing, I recommend you get it from Hong Kong; it's pretty cheap there too. In China, Dopod also has an identical device also called the Touch HD, however, the difference-- like between all Dopod phones and HTC phones-- is that the Dopod versions don't include Wifi and 3G. Gov't restrictions maybe? :S

HAHA , DOPOD announced HD early this year. you know how much they are selling in the beginning? RMB8288, As exactly the same with its model number T8288, DOPOD is crazy. DOPOD HD doesn't include WIFI/3G
Can get it with 3G and Wifi in China
It is possible to get the Touch HD in here in China with 3G and Wifi....If you buy a Dopod branded phone, it won't have either, but if you go to a mobile store and ask for "shui huo" you can get them. The "shui huo" versions of the phones are usually brought in from Europe then brought across the border (tax free). Don't let the sales staff trick you into paying more for them. These phones are cheaper than the Dopod branded ones and they are exactly the same phone (with more features enabled). As mentioned above, you also have to be aware of fakes, but if you take your time and check out multiple vendors, you should be ok....Always ask to try the phone before you buy it (ALWAYS).
Additionally, it will be extremely difficult to find one with a WWE rom. I usually come on here and flash a WWE rom as soon as I get my phone...Never had a problem...
China has some great deals and some great rip-offs...Just exercise some caution and you should be fine. Test the phone and make sure the Wifi and 3G options work and you should be fine.
newer high-end mobile phones are ALWAYS cheaper in the US/EU than in china. IN fact, everything that is "name brand" or high-end is more expensive in China. THe idea that China is cheaper than the west is just totally wrong these days, when I go back to the USA I stock up on clothes, electronics, etc. as the quality is certain, there are no spy programs or disabled features, and the price is much lower. If you want to buy cheap garbage, it will be cheaper in China, but for anything nice it is MUCH more expensive.

That's not necessarily true...
HTC is a Taiwanese company and they export their products to places all over the world. One of them is Hong Kong, and as we all know, there are no taxes, customs, tariffs, or whatever on imported products there. Thus, electronics are generally cheaper in Hong Kong than they are elsewhere. Also, due to the proximity of Hong Kong and Taiwan, shipping is also cheaper than to the Americas for example, thus further reducing the end-user cost (however this may just be a little bit). Therefore, many of the "shui huo" HTC products brought into China from places like Hong Kong actually end up being cheaper (even more if you haggle and perhaps they'll throw in some goodies too!) than they are elsewhere.
Hope that sheds some light upon this issue.
So now now... don't go around making imperatives like "everything" all the time... hehe

Cheapest HD2 in Germany?

Considering to buy a HD2 in the next time.. Can somebody tell me where to get it cheap in Germany? The cheapest i found is just 570 incl. shipping.. But i have read of 515 or sth....
http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a470265.html
the cheapest I found so far is 535,90€ on http://www.handy-navi.de/Handy-und-Smartphone/HTC/HTC-Touch-HD-2-anthrazit-T-Mobile::804.html
but I never ordered from handy-navy.de. So I don't know if the seller is trustable.
Just ordered mine from danto.de.. They seem to be serious as they have good ratings and an exact publishing date. However it costs 570 €... But i want to be sure when it comes to an expensive phone...

But it has also T-Mobile branding!
You can order @ expansys.de.
From now just 7 days delivery time. The distributor already has it in stock.
It's not the cheapest, but you can pay in more ways than in other stores, including bank transfer(!).
Update: The date just switched from +7 days to 17.11.2009

T-Mobile aren't branding this phone are they? I heard roumers they weren't
i could offer everyone who is interested the htc hd2 for a price of 600,-€ inclusive shipping costs. i work in a small company in regensburg/ratisbon, germany. we get the phones from one of the biggest german distributors and we have the possibility to ship devices - on advance payment - directly from distributor to costumer. so as soon as the device is available at the distributor, it will be sent to the costumer. distributor telled me at the phone, that the device is expected end of november, no exact date, though.
if anyone is interested in this possibility, or for further questions, you can contact me directly via pm.
---
this schould not be seen as a commercial offer since i am just a student working "400€-job"-wise in this company, this is an offer for you, if you like to buy from a smaller company with support and service, but get the device quick an not that expensive.
2 devices would make you pay 1180,-€ (590,- each) if you are interested.
If you're looking for the cheapest in Germany, I maintain a vendor list http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Leo/Vendors Its got pretty much all online licensed vendors listed and all comparative prices.
So far the Cheapest vendor shipping to Germany is based in Switzerland (Digitec.ch) and sells the phone for €504. They have the HD2 in English,German & Dutch keyboard layouts too
Keep an eye on the the vendor list though you might find it cheaper. Hope that helps
ps. the absolute cheapest is sold by BTC in Nederland for €469, not sure if they ship to Germany though.

But remember, you have to add customs fees on goods out of Switzerland.
Usually these are 19% VAT and fees for the customs procedure.
All in all, you're buying this one for about €620 and this is more expensive than buying in germany directly.
I'm fairly sure items from Switzerland to anywhere else in the EU are free from Customs. (even though Switzerland isn't completely part EU/EMU) I've had items sent to Ireland and Netherlands from Switzerland and not paid a cent in customs (maybe im lucky? ) But if not you definitely can get customs free HD2 from Netherlands. Algebeld ship to Germany (I think they might have a base there) and its only €524 from them. IF BTC-online ship it you could get it for €469
If you still want to buy from an exclusive German vendor though the cheapest there is TalkThisWay.de for €569 ....at least your not stuck in Norway they sell for almost €725 there.

Why the price difference? (US vs AU)

So the US T-Mobile branded phone is for all intents and purposes, a better phone going by the specs, ROM & RAM upgrade.
So why is T-Mobile offering $450 no contract, and it's around $800-$900 to import one from Australia? I mean I understand taxes duties and the likes, and exchange rates, but 1 U.S. dollar = 1.09649123 Australian dollars So there shouldn't be THAT much of a difference...
Supply and demand my friend. Although the ones that come from AU being the Telstra brand works on the ATT 3G bands.

Yes I know that the telstra version works with AT&T, which is why I'm curious of the price difference.
HD2 T-Mobile US: $450 USD no contract
HD2 Telstra: $755.88 USD ($829.00 AUD) no contract
HD2 UK: $692.04 USD (£464.99) no contract
My point is that the T-Mo phone is a better phone, spec wise compared to the Telstra one.
Why the $200+ price difference for less of a phone?
Don't forget that the poor Australians usually pay ANY electronic device / technical stuff a good deal more than everybody else in the first place, all the stuff with importing goods to a remote country for few people and transporting them all across a huge country... that would be the difference between the UK and AUS price you listed.
Then to the difference between UK and US, I'd put it down to TMO subsidizing it and selling with little or no profit for marketing reasons. Even without contract the phones are locked to their network, so they make sure they'll recover costs from service. In Europe ours aren't locked, so we can buy one and use it anywhere.

Things aren't really that expensive down here!
1) agree that T-mobile is probably still subsidising the device. The price of the Telstra version is completely unlocked and could be used on other networks.
2) the telstra price includes all taxes and charges
3) the exchange rate (USD-AUD) has varied quite a bit and was down to .77 (now at .91) at some stage in the last 6 months. Given that companies like HTC set their sales strategies months out - they might have used at lower exchange rates.
Still - I bought mine off ebay for $700 AUD. I hate telstra

Think about it for a moment. Supply and demand. Let it sink in...
TmoUS has an HD2. AT&T and a few other Canadian carriers dont. So there's the potential of XX million of users on all of those carriers who will not get the HD2. With that in mind, the DEMAND for the HD2 is very high (as it was across Europe and Asia) and being that this is a very expensive smartphone, HTC can't churn them out like Nokia with all their dumbphones, resulting in a very low SUPPLY.
Just think of the next time you drive your car and you're low on gas. All the gas stations around you are out of gas themselves except for one. Unfortunately, this one gas station understands that you have no other alternative except coming here for gas, so it is charging $5/gal compare to $2/gal of the other ones. If you're unwilling to walk 10mi to your workplace, you'd fork over the money to fill up with $5/gal.
Now about the hardware, noone here cares about TmoUS having an extra 512MB of ROM when most people install it on their 16GB sd card anyway. So hardware is a moot point.

850/2100 is dynamite.
900/2100 is good.
1700/2100 is basically useless.
tmob has a price of 450
htc has a price of 550 for the same ??

Expansys is selling refurbished phones in ebay.$675.
I bought the phone last week and i live in downtown chicago. After a week of experience with phone i would say this is the best ever. GPS is accurate in the downtown although there are few hiccups when across willis tower and trump tower which is pretty normal for a GPS. Wifi is great i never had any problems so far. Data connection on my At&t is much faster than my captivate(1.6MB/sec vs 2MB/sec). I tried testing it vs iphone 4, my galaxys2 showed significantly faster data speeds. Battery is ok but not the best. Call quality is something you would really like. I am really happy and proud to have phone a like this.
I hope i helped some of other fellow XDA members by starting this thread with coupon codes.

They say they have 41 in stock on the US site... will it actually ship FROM the US or are they just shipping it from the UK? I assume it's from the US since the shipping options are 3-5 day GROUND which would be impossible from England =)
BTW coupon code EXP10 works out to a bit over 16 bucks off (since it's 10 GBP off), bit better than the $15 off code above.

Warranty - no, it is a grey (unlicensed/unsanctioned) phone in the USA. None of the sellers will sell you an SGS2 currently with a US warranty. Some will come with UK warranty only. I do not know what ExpUSA is selling though.
Regarding the 3G bands, this forum thread on their site quotes a rep saying only 2 bands are supported, and later on in the year a model will come with support for the other 2 bands. There won't be a quad band 3G phone according to that person. Not sure how true it is.
Nevertheless the stock count went down from 41 to 34 in about half hour

I wonder why they would provide conflicting information then
So when would we be able to buy a GS2 in the US that comes with a warranty?
Is that only when the carriers start selling it?
Well Guyz, i don't think samsung makes separate phones for Expansys with a different radio. It would assume it is a Typo. Obviously this phone is from UK without NFC.
There is only one version of the phone for now. If I had to guess and this is only a guess having called them I think they were originally unable to switch it over to the 850/1900 bands back in the UK when they first got a handset to fiddle with. For that reason they are saying it is dual band only in case it turned out the 850/1900 bands were disabled or lacking the radios they would not be faced with a bunch of returns from the states.
these have to be just UK models shipped over here to the USA. which in that case, i would actually rather have the UK model if it has a warranty.
however it might be easier to return/exchange with expansys usa if something is defective with the phone initially. but it would be more difficult to return the device back to the UK for a swap. tough decision...
I would rather not take the risk of it not supporting AT&T bands.
Guess I'll wait...
Well I have one wandering my way from these guys so I can let you know on the AT&T. I'm not concerned though, there is only one model currently on sale anywhere and it is already shown to work on AT&T. Like Roger I believe these are UK phones expansys is selling on their usa site which would be the ones shown to work.
There is a thread in here with people reporting the phone is getting very fast 3G speeds on AT&T. Unless they are lying, and I am hard pressed to think why, something about that page is fishy.
Well guys I ordered from here when it was about 30 left in stock, per product page.
Already got a fedex tracking num, not picked up by fedex yet.
When I get mine I will test on AT&T and TMOB
If anyone gets theirs sooner - please also post your findings! thanks

We people spend 20 hours a day reading this forum man. I have no life besides this forum
The concern with Expansys USA is their site and some of their support people claimed only 2 bands are supported for 3G. We do not know where they are importing from, could be limited models from some remote country (like Russia)
Also i have a question why is Expansys Uk selling it for 519 pounds which is almost equal to 852$ USA and Expansys USA selling it for 749$. Since the phone is coming from UK it has to be at least more than 852$. Can we assume this is not a UK phone.
Not really because that UK price includes VAT which is not required for the US. If you order from Handtec to the US it's actually cheaper than Expansys USA's site once you do the conversion at today's exchange rate.
I'm 99% certain the phone they have is the UK version. They're a UK based company, the specs are identical, and the only other version out there is the Korean one.
Anyway, anyone order this today and get a tracking number yet?

US or UK version Zoom should I buy

After much deliberation I decided to get a Xoom. I am located in UK but undecided as to get the UK version or US version. Read on the web that the the US version version is better supported & updates are quicker.
Are they any significant hardware differences between the two versions?

Are you getting the wifi-only version? then no hardware difference and you can set locale.
If 3G version, there are some differences but I think there may be workarounds.
UK wifi you can flash the US images anyway pretty easier and basically have a US xoom
I bought a brand new UK Xoom from Costco for only £287.98 inc vat. Has 90 day return policy & 2yr warranty. Time to start playing.
at least uk should have 3.1 now...?
not too far behind
