same so hopefully there's a fix
Damn, so that's the story. So the people that reported it working just started it up and never actually checked if it does work or not. That's disappointing. Which version of wifi tether application are you people using? I've read one person reporting that 2.0.1 works and one saying that 2.0.2 does not. Please report your finding with version numbers in case it does matter.
2.0.2-pre9 here. it says its working fine but nothing shows up for me.
You need a modified kernel with iptables support. I'm sure someone will roll a modified kernel soon, since Samsung is open sourcing everything.
same here, installs fine, runs ( in terms of starting/stopping tethering) but in the logs theres a bunch of stuff that fails, and no devices can see the ssid (default is AndroidTether). I guess we just wait for modified kernels as danguy mentioned
Banacle wifi seems to work
For a little while...
The my touch slide had a similar issue initially. It needed a different version of the wifi tether app. Version 2.0.5pre3. Hopefully a specific version will work on the Vibrant as well when someone finds it.
Here is the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708266
EDIT: Similar issue on the Legend and it was resolved by communicating with the program devs. They needed 2.0.2pre10.

Seeing as android-wifi-tether is iffy as of right now, I tried out Barnacle Wifi Tether in the market. Works!!! I was surfing the net on my laptop tethered to 'barnacle'. Downside was I was only on G as that's what I get in parts of my house. But there you go.
Odd note: After disconnecting, I was unable to re-connect to my home wireless. Ended up doing a system restore to yesterday. Not sure why that happened though. So....there's my DISCLAIMER.
yup same thing here it files the log as not being able to set the mhz and some other stuff...
even after i change the band it stills says the same thing..
I have always found android wifi tether 1.6 to be the most reliable. You guys could possibly try that version while waiting for a fix on the 2.0.2.
1.6 doesn't work
gahh the log
Looked into my log and it says I have an unsupported device - moving down to 2.01 and I'll report back
As said several posts earlier, barnacle works fine. Android-wifi-tether requires a custom kernal with iptables support enabled. Quote from wifi-tether's web page.
This application requires a "rooted"-device and a custom-kernel which supports netfilter (iptables)! Please see the FAQ for detailed information.

I tried Barnacle Tether briefly with my iPad and it worked for browsing. However when I tried running the speedtest app on the iPad, Barnacle returned an error stating that entity was too large. Maybe it is fine for browsing but not for larger downloads? I will test with a PC later. Have not tried any of the android wifi tether versions yet but I suspect at this point that they won't work until a newer version gets released that addresses Vibrant issues or until we see a modified kernel with ipTables.
Update
Just an update from my earlier post, I rooted my Vibrant and haven't have time to do anything else, however none of the android tethers that are on the code.google page work on my phone. I also tried barnacle and another wifi tether off the market and those didn't work either. So - haven't tried pda net yet, but as of now I'm declaring the known wifi tether apps to not work on the Samsung Vibrant.
But Please, Prove me wrong!!!
I haven't tried it yet but how is this guy able to:
root his phone: http://samsungvibranthacks.com/samsung-vibrant-hacks/how-to-root-samsung-vibrant-galaxy-s/
then,
install a working wifi tether: http://samsungvibranthacks.com/sams...n-your-samsung-vibrant-into-a-mobile-hotspot/
I was about to try until I saw this thread...
If I am at home using my personal router, my wifi works great and I have no problems at all. However, when I am at the library, which is everyday for me, if i try to use their wifi I instantly get this error message that the page cannot be displayed even though my phone claims i am connected to their wifi.
anyone else have this issue? it is extremely annoying and i downloaded wifi fixer but it didnt fix anything.
any ideas?
If it works at home then I doubt it's an issue on your side, sometimes on networks such as school campuses and libraries you have to register your device on the network for it to be able to access the internet. Have you asked the library on how you can do that?
Well it is a public library and they have fliers up that tell you how to use their wifi. I thought it was an issue with my phone so I didn't bother asking a librarian. If no one else has a solution I will definitely be asking tomorrow.

Do they use WiFi proxy? Like a redirect to a webpage that requires you to register your MAC.

well, Android has had that issue ever since, and it is still not fixed.
I think Samsung Galaxy S gets around it in the Wi-Fi proxy config (under settings, Wireless and Network, hit the menu button at the bottom of the screen, and go to Advanced), but you need to know the proxy hostname and port (I think the default will be 80 for HTTP requests).
I haven't tested it though.
Here's the issue log from code.google.com

Mine cannot get on WiFi at the rink I go to. Other people could not get their notebooks or netbooks onto that WiFi as well. My HD2 connects to that WiFi just fine, though.
I don't think it's a Vibrant-specific issue.
I've had a similar problem with the wifi network on my campus. It redirects to a logon page that the vibrant won't even display. Apparently the android browser has an issue with security certificates that aren't configured properly. Froyo is supposed to fix it, but in the mean time try connecting with the firefox browser. I'm able to connect with it, then switch back to the regular browser or any other program. Once you're logged in you're good to go.

Hi,
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but having searched I can't find anything that helps.
I have upgraded my G1 to run on Android 2.2 via all the links and information on here, but seem to be haing some trouble with Wifi.
The G1 finds and connects to my wireless access point no problem, I can then browse the Android Market on the phone but after about 1-2 minutes I get a message saying "A network error has occurred", I click retry repeatedly and sometimes after a few attempts I get it to load the page I want. I also experience the same when browsing the web on the G1.
I have tried manually creating the wifi connection but still no improvement. I have changed the channel of my access point but again still no improvement.
I have tried disabling Wifi on the G1 and using my mobile internet connection from my 3G network and this works fine.
Here are some details from my G1
Android version 2.2.1
Baseband version 62.50S.20.17U_2.22.19.26I
Kernel version 2.6.35.99-cyanogenmod shade(atsign) toxygene #2
Mod version CyanogenMod-6.1.0-DS
Build number FRG83
Any helpwill be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Gavin
Still no joy!!
Still hoping for some help, in the meantime I have updated the radio to 2.22.23.02 but still I am experiencing the same problem.
Help!
I have the exact same problem on my HD2. 3G and internet pass-through work fine, but when I'm on WiFi I get the network error messages. I have tried different WiFi networks, several Rom, radio, Kernel combinations and I still get the same errors. I even tried reverting back to the original T-Mobile Windows Rom. While I can't get the same errors, many web pages didn't load while browsing. In general I got the feeling that the rate of non-loading pages was similar to that of the network error pop-ups that I experienced while using Android. At this point I'm suspecting that I have a hardware problem. I tried opening up the phone and messing with the WiFi antenna connections, but nothing I did made any difference. I'm still looking for a solution, but no one has really addressed this exact problem.
While this may not be helpful to your specific problem I hope it makes you feel better that you are not alone.
What wifi do you run on? b/g/n ? That may also affect your connectivity.
It sounds more like a modem/access point problem to me...not phone.
Could be wifi interference from a cordless phone etc. Also, check you are using 20mhz bandwidth on your wifi access point. Some access points allow setting it to 40mhz which can really cause problems.
Can you try wifi access from a friends house that is known reliable and see if there is any improvement?
I too have this issue
I have jumped through all the hoops to get my T-mobile G1 rooted, updated
(2.6.35.10-TheOfficial-pershoot-DreamSapphire-2708)
and it works great with my voice only sim from AT&T...except that the wifi just doesn't work right. It connected for about 20 minutes, and since then everything I try to do fails after a loooooooong pause "Network Error"
Is there anyone who has any idea what this can be?
Last wk i used wireless tethering and i cant get to yahoo, facebook, espn. But when i go to google, it loads fine. I search google and it comes up fine. I click on a result and the page wont load. I have full signal and im on 4g. Has anyone else had this issue???

I don't think wireless tether works with 4g? I'm not too positive, but if that's the case, your computer probably has google chached so it doesn't need a connection to load it.

This is the third complaint I've seen about 4G tethering issues in the past day or so, I'm suspicious of something.
Can you describe what happes when you try to go to a site that doesn't work. Does it give you an error? Does it half-load? Does it wait forever?
Also, which city are you located in?
Mine is working fine on 4g and on any site.

Haven't tried it with 4G yet, but I was having major problems until I went to the Android Tether site and d/led the latest Beta. No problems with 3G and includes infrastructure mode!
I've had 0 issues myself. Can use via 3g or 4g and no restriction on sites visited in any manner
My wireless tether does not work on 4g. Same problem google loads fine, but trying to go to a site it just sits there loading. White page no errors. And data is not moving on the phone. Only site I could get to load was cnn.com. tried a 100 other and just hangs loading page.

Which city are you in? Which 4G network are you connected to (Settings -> Wireless and network -> 4G settings)?
Are you running EB13? Stock or custom kernel/ROM?
Which wireless tether client and version are you using? If it's "WiFi Tether v3.0-preX" are you using "Auto", "WEXT (ad-hoc)" or "Softap (master)" setup (Settings -> Change Setup-Method)?
Does the problem persist if you switch from "ad-hoc" to "master" or vice-versa? Note if you do, you'll probably have to temporarilly disable your encryption or change your passphrase.
It wouldn't surprise me if some folks are having 4G tethering issues based on the market they're in. Based on the symptoms, I'm suspicious if fragmented packets aren't being dropped. This can be fixed, but would require debugging with someone who both has the problem and is willing to run adb commands.
Can you visit this site? (Don't go there before you're tethered. If you do, clear your browser cache.)

Here is what I can tell you now, as I lose 4g at home.
Wireless tether 2.0.6
Ad hoc
No encryption
Bradenton,FL
Like I said before though why does cnn.com work fine.
PM me if you want more info.

Same problem with wireless tether
I am using a Samsung Epic 4G. Tethering worked fine on 4G network here in Pompano Beach, FL until last week when I ran the Sprint Upgrade.
Cannot load much of anything but Google (this is not cached, it will perform a new search but cant get any of the results). Any attempt to get to other sites only produces the dreaded blank page with "Loading" that goes on forever.
I have virtually no connectivity in 4G but 3G works pretty well.
I am using wireless tether 2.0.5 which I reinstalled after an update. But have tried other versions and other apps with same results on 4G.
Since problem began, I have loaded various versions of the operating system, OneClick and Midnight ROM 4.1 (with 4.0 I couldn't even get a 4G signal)
Any help would be appreciated.
im having really weird problems accessing and downloading from android market. when i am using my phone network i dont have any issues at all, but whenever i try to access it using wifi all my downloads fail.
it's only the market i have a problem with, otherwise i can browse the net and download as normal using wifi.
any idea what the problem can be? remember, its specific ONLY to the market place
*apologies, this should be in the S2 thread
Once got the same problem on Galaxy S. It disappeared automagically after one day.
ok, i managed to get it working, but only by making my wifi connection open. if i have any encryption on my router i cant access the market.
judging by the lack of replies, i guess no-one has a clue?
try it on someone else's router
Happened to me all the time using the old market. I installed the newer version and the problem went away.
Also the encryption on your router should make no difference, this is transparent to the app.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
router isnt the problem.
just noticed that my version of the market is 2.3.6, so looks like there's been quite a few updates that i have been missing out on, downloading now and ill let you know if it solves the problem
