Trackball Alert vs Light Flow - Nexus One General

Has anyone seen if either 1 of these apps pulls ahead of the other? Really just looking to see which is the best 1 overall between the 2 since I'm picking up my Nexus in a few.

Light flow is newer but doesn't provide any advantage over Tb alert in the free versions, if only it added support for more 3rd party apps like alarms I would understand...but no!

But isn't Lightflow the only APp for Trackball settings which doesn't need root? I use LightFlow on my Stock N1 and is works perfectly.

Lots of apps have Trackball settings for their own notifications. So you can achieve the same sort of thing without a dedicated Trackball settings app and without rooting. ie Chomp/Hancent for SMS, Gmail alert, Skype etc etc.

Yes, but you cannot define the color in most apps. So having one general app to define everything including color and notification interval is very convenient.

I like choosing color as well as sound notification in ONE PLACE. With TB Alert, you can only pick a color. If you test, it shows the light only. With Light Flow, you have ability to hear a sound file as well as see the color picked light when testing the notification. It's just a bit more convemient to me to have this all in one place.

Doc you amaze me
Don't tell me you tried the hundred thousands apps in the market too apart all the roms that were released on N1?
You should write a book ''All you need to know about a nexus one rooted''

I'm rooted but since it is the stock rom (which is odexed) I cannot run trackball alert, thus I went with light flow.

i use SMS Popup. It's free and doesn't require root. It's specifically for messaging notifications but allows you to set your trackball color and you can specify different colors for different contacts.

I've used both, but staying with Light Flow lite on my current rom. I like all the color & app options as well as the Developer's frequent updates/support.

That's funny
I really was a confirmed iPhone type. All I really was using for the last three years. I knew nada about Android. I basically dove in head first when I decided to go for the N1. Saw it at CES here in Las Vegas and immediately went home and ordered it. Haven't looked back since and nothing out there is good enough to replace it....yet. I figure about Christmas time when Quad Core Honeycomb Tegra stuff becomes passe, it will be time to upgrade. Of course it helps having a son who works for NVIDEA looking out for me WRT up and coming stuff
I do scour the market when I get bored, looking for some neat stuff, but hanging out on XDA is worth its weight in Gold too.

I went with lightflow myself for stock nx1

I hope you will get a Optimus 2X it looks like the next devs favorite flagship phone, and its the best specs/price dual core too but I will miss the Tb colors and wake, dunno if the main LG button can do that and with colors

I will put that in the suggestion book. I have no clue what it will be. I just know that after two years, it WILL be time to update. But it has to be in the same class as the N1, and it has to be considered near the top for development too.

I haven't used TrackBall Alert but I have had Light Flow pro before and after I rooted my N1. I love the app; I have it set for every notification that I will have, all different colors. Great customization and well worth the money.

I've started running a stock/rooted OTA GRI40 and since its not deodexed/patched, I've had to give up my beloved Trackball Alert Pro.. anyways, nobody has commented on battery..?

I don't get any major drainage that I know of; with the recent update to Light Flow, you can now control how long it flashes for each notification; thus enabling things to show for 15 min (up till 34hr/never stop) to keep tthe battery topped.

I've not had any negative comments back from light flow on battery and evaluate every new user request to try and ensure I only add features that will have minimal impact.
When I think of new routines to make things even more efficient I'll go back and rewrite sections like the new v1.4.x has.

Yeah I've been running Light Flow for a couple days now and its not even showing up on my battery stats so I'm confident it is light on the battery

quick review after a day of use.

Things I like
1. Keyboard. Did I say keyboard?
I'm still trying my fingers to get familiar with physical keys. Almost two years of wondering on virtual keyboard made it little bit uncomfortable but I love actually having the physical keyboard.
2. Call quality
Compare to my dear NexusOne, call quality is little better.
3. Hinge design
I remember how unsatisfied I was with G1's design or Xperia x1a with it's slide out. I didn't like how G1 continuously hitting the side and became loose or not so smooth sliding out mechanism of Xperia x1a's design. Fortunately my hinge didn't have any problem and works great.
4. Size
So much thinner than I thought. Of course comparing to ones without physical keyboards this is much thicker but wow not bad at all.
now the things I don't like
1. G2 didn't restore all my apps from app store. I had to manually search and download them all again. Yes it still had my paid apps on there but none of them restored either.
2. Screen problems.
First, automatic brightness doesn't work. On top of that screen with white background flickers (i.e. surfing the web) when the brightness set to minimum.
3. Space bar on the keyboard
I really do wish space bar is little bit bigger. I do not need three quick keys. Two would been perfectly fine. I rather have a bit longer space bar.
4. Battery life
Probably due to auto-brightness not working properly, battery drained a lot quicker than i thought. It lasted me only 7 hrs on my first day.
Sigh... After work I'm going to T-Mobile store to exchange it =(
Automatically restoring apps will be in gingerbread from what i've read... but dont quote me on that
It sucks that you had to download everything again. I'm not sure if your previous phone was rooted or not but Titanium Backup does a fantastic job of restoring everything with one click but you have to be a "Root" user to use the application.
I dont have the phone yet but I do agree that the quick keys aren't need. Having an application on a homescreen is alot easier to access than having to open the phone and then hit the quick key.
Are you going to exchange the phone for another G2 or just another phone entirely?
I can't figure out what auto-brightness is really trying to do. I figured it would use the light sensor and adjust brightness as necessary. Instead it seems that it just starts the brightness on a lower setting when you first wake the phone up and then increases it if you keep the phone awake long enough.
I can see some logic to that design, so it may be intentional. Of course it does not reflect how we actually use our phones. If I need full brightness, I probably need it right away. If I'm using my phone in a dark room (say, trying to read a terrible Google Voice transcription of an already incomprehensible late night drunk call), the last thing I want is for the screen to go full blast after a minute.
The quick keys definitely feel like a gimmick to me. I have them set to directly open a message to people I frequently text, but I don't know how much I'll really use them. I'm sure someone will come up with a really cool thing to link them to though.

with my NexusOne, whenever I wipe the device completely to install different rom and waht not, as soon as I sign into Google account all my apps were restored. I don't know why G2 can't when Nexus One with Froyo can

I don't think it is a good idea to decide a device after only a day of use

I should used multi-quote...
anyway, there's a light sensor on top left corner of the screen. It should sense the amount of light it sees and adjust accordingly. At least that's how iPhone, NexusOne, and other devices worked. hm.. if yours act like that too then idk it is defective entirely or just need a update.
Either or, my screen flickering at the lowest setting should not happen.
Actually, there is a QuickKeys widget included that you can put on the homescreen, so you don't need to open the keyboard to get that functionality.

After a little experimentation using my hand to cover the light sensor, I think my sensor is just very sensitive. I'm also probably too used to a very dim screen because I always kept my G1 brightness down to save battery. I'll have to experiment more in a completely dark room to see what happens.
Im still training my battery its been more than 24 hrs and the G2 still hasn't went dead yet

Would they let you exchange a G2 for another one just, no questions asked? I've never done an exchange before so I am just curious.
I think the reason your apps aren't automatically downloading is due to them being different devices and so the Market recognises that and doesn't download them.
If you use AppBrain you can sync your Nexus One and save the list of all your apps there and then copy that list on AppBrain to your new device and then you can sync that and it will download your apps so you don't have to search for each one.

Yes. If you bought it at a retail T-Mobile store you have a 14 buyers remorse period where you can freely exchange it for a new device (has to be the same device, can't exchange for a Vibrant for example) if something is wrong.

How does that make any sense? "I have buyers remorse, so I'll go exchange this for the same model...."
The policy is 20 day no questions asked - restock fee may be applied. What they do at a local store may be entirely different.

Do you find the LED notification light valuable?

From my reading it seems Windows Phone 7 doesn't have any support for LED notifications. This adds to the already huge population of iPhone users that are used to not having it either. It really surprises me that these platforms choose to leave this feature out, because to me it's invaluable. I use it throughout the day to see if I need to turn my phone on after returning to my desk (at home or work), and not having it requires manual checks to see if I've missed anything. Why should I have to bother with that? So I'm curious if other Android users find it just as valuable, and if you're just as dumbfounded why these other platforms don't have it.
I love it, but hate how it always stays lit when charging on my nightstand.
Can't live without it for notifications. Wish it was multi colored like the Droid as well.

Yeah, nothing's is as good as a BlackBerry but what the EVO has isn't bad, definitely better than nothing. It's just with two major consumer-oriented platforms leaving it out (inexplicably), I hope Android manufacturers don't eventually do away with it.
This is a feature I have always liked on all of my phones.

LED flash for camera

Ok, so it has been a year since Vibrant been available. Great phone but it has its flaws, nothing is perfect in this world.
GPS - fixed
ROM - fixed
Kernel - fixed
Sound - fixed
Camera LED - NOT available
I'm surprise no one has come up with a resolution for this.
Vibrant on Project-V + Bali-X 1.1
That would just be way more trouble than it's worth.
It's not the fact that the camera doesn't have a LED that bothers me. It's the lack of LED in general that most phones use for text messages, missed calls, voice mail etc. Oh well. There are some good apps to work around that. Love this phone.
I always confuse the two.. but doesnt the vibrant NOT have a camera flash?
While the galaxyS has the camera flash?
Yeah.... BLN works great
Agreed. I just wish there was a way to turn it off for email and only have it for missed calls and sms

Out of curiosity, which tablets do have notification LEDs? I've tried searching but it's come up vague.
i've yet to see any tablet with an LED.
It's not needed as much on a tablet as on the phone with missed calls and texts.
NoLED should suffice just fine. And NoLED combats burn-in by having an option to move the notification around so it's never using the same pixel for long.

NoLED is really only for OLED screens, on an IPS it will run your battery bone dry in double time
Notification lights for things like Gmail, Facebook, Twitter
My HP Touchpad has an LED...
Idea, is it not possible to make a costum ROM with a function, "use screen as notification LED"?
I do not mind that there is no LED. I have a U20I thats runs so slow, that any replacement for android gaming is good for me .

NoLED has an option to not turn the screen on when the proximity sensor is "close", so you can just keep the tablet face down when it's not on the charger.

I'll be honest, I don't miss the LED notification. It really frees me to not be a slave to the phone. I use Mighty Text on the phone and at least while I'm home, notifications will show up on my laptop. The last few days I've been using their Chrome plugins which adds more notifications to the desktop, but I'm about ready to uninstall that because it can be really annoying.
I miss the LED terribly but haven't had time to look at the software alternatives. I often need to have the phone completely silent/no vibration, and not being able to see what's going on via varicolored strobing LED is a miss. Love the phone otherwise, but I really gotta sort out a solution using ambient display or some such, without killing the battery.
