Given that EB13 is not the panacea many of us hoped it would be, I'd like to gather opinion on what the most functional base ROM is for our beloved Epic. Newer does not appear to be better. The following are stereotypes that I've gathered from forum cruising:
EB13 is a buggy mess, but apparently fixes GPS for some.
DK28 is the Froyo option we loved because it was all we could get.
DI18 is battle-tested, and perhaps has fewer issues.
CyanogenMod is crapware-free, but doesn't even try to use all of the hardware features of the phone.
Vote for your favorite, but also post with the ones you have used, and why you prefer the one.
For example, I've only used DI18 and DK28. I prefer DK28 because I like Google Maps 5.x, but my GPS doesn't work at all.
I have used all of them, with MOST of the ROMs. I still prefer CM6, and would be using it if not for the broken MMS. Now i patiently await CM7. And as for the actual builds, I would say EB13. Running perfectly on my phone thanks to all the patches and ROMs. Currently running Syndicate rom. And i am in love with my phone.
Once you flash the camera fix, EB13 is the best stock ROM in my opinion. (Assuming you did a fresh wipe/install of it). Most of the bugs were due to the update.zip and OTA installs.
EB13
Sure there are a few bugs, but there are a few bugs in every build we get. A fresh Odin flash eliminates many issues for some people and there are patches out there for some of the other stuff like the camera bug. GPS works at least as well as DK28 for me. I had issues on DI18, like most people. DI18 is missing the all the froyo features and really isn't the pinnacle of stability that some people make it sound like. It is only "battle-tested" because they took so long to release an update.

So, coming from a string of G1's and a Nexus, I cannot stand SenseUi. At ALL. I can live with the widgets and launcher- they are actually tolerable- what I cant accept are the keyboard, the way contacts are brought up, the lack of cut/paste in several areas, and all the frilly crud that goes along with it. I seek a TRUE vanilla rom, based on Android components not HTC. People constantly recommend using advanced launcher or one similar, but these are just launchers- they dont change the stuff back to stock that I seek. So my question is, can there ever be a REAL vanilla rom that has none of the Sense components? Is it possible to de-theme these areas in similar fashion to how the current de-sensing works, or would it require that HTC releases a vanilla version (which they never will). I guess I am asking, am I fighting a loosing battle?
You are coming from an N1 and asking this question?
Really?
Cyanogenmod ring a bell?
i was in the same boat as you. i am on cyanogen now, however there are a few issues with this port. on the nexus i didn't ever have any issues with cm6 but on the incredible you have to install another kernel after you install cm6 so that the camera will work, the camcorder just doesn't work yet, and when i have wifi on i get a reboot about once a day. i live with it because like you i hate sense ui but i wish they would have released a n1 for verizon. they did just release the source code for 2.6.32 which is froyo today, so the code shoulod be added into the nightlies of cm6 shortly.
It's been said that the latest radio fixes many (if not all) of those problems in Cyanogen on DInc. I can't attest to this being true or not, but some people were talking about it last night in the "Unrevoked - Forever" thread in the dev section.
cool! so there is hope. I figured the CM rom would be truly vanilla, but since it had so many little oddities I haven't given it a go yet. Good to know there is the possibility. Thanks guys

The new .32 kernel source that was just released will also allow koush to finish CM6 for the incredible. Basically now that this new kernel is out the bluetooth stack and everything else including the camcorder not working in CM6 will all work once implemented.
Even though the bluetooth works perfect in CM6 unlike normal senseui roms. /letting out BT steam
...
I wonder when this will be ready?
So I have a captivate right now and am thinking of switching to spirt to get the epic 4g. On my captivate there really isnt any specific problems like "in this roms were having sms and mms problems" or "lol wifi doesnt work" other than the GPS which is whatever. So what if any are the problems with the custom roms on this phone and or problems that i would be facing if i did get one and want to put a custom rom on it.
Thanks,
Bryan
Just about any rom should be fine, there aren't any issues that you won't find on any other Galaxy S phone, such as the GPS issues. You may experience certain quirks with the 'beta' froyo builds, but otherwise pretty stable. The only rom with any issues like you mentioned would be Cyanogen, which is because it is still unfinished as of yet.
Excellent advice if you take time out to actually read the threads for each rom, and don't jump into it before your certain you will be fine. A proper install of any froyo leak should produce a stable daily use phone. Be sure to follow the gps lock instructions to a T. That's all if your going to the froyo leak, the stock rom ifs very smooth if you choose to stock with it for a while. If you run into any trouble, Don't hesitate to pm me I'm always willing to help.

I know this info is probably all over, but my searches come up with a lot of mixed results, and I tend not to trust software I download off a random Google hit.
Are there any straight-up stock Gingerbread ROMs for the Evo that work and are stable? (Broken 4G is alright, but I want all non-phone hardware to work.)
Savaged rom or omgb
Sent from my EVO 3D. Yes I work with Sprint.
isnt CM7 pretty much stock ? i know they add ADW but its 99% stock
The closest thing you'll find is CyanogenMod 7. It works fairly well, has WiMAX, HDMI, GPS is spotty (there's workarounds for it), and has a crapton of customizations available.
I use CM7 + a flashable mod that takes out some CM apps like the file explorer and adds in the stock launcher. That's as close to stock 2.3 plus you get 4G and HDMI.

Well if you want bare bones stock then OMFGB is the only stock 2.3 Tom I know of. It can be found here http://t3hh4xx0r.com/projects-2/projects/omfgb-4/nightly-builds
But if you should know that CM7 will have to most features that are currently working for the evo. All AOSP roms are not specifically written for the evo, therefore new code has to be written in order for it to properly work. That is why it takes some time for them to get all features implemented.
I say give CM7 a shot. Stock 2.3 with many extra tweaks and mods.
Alright.
Does anyone know if the Savaged-Zen kernel works with the OMGB ROM?
Stock as in all AOSP stock? Or stock as in I just bought this phone from Sprint and it has Gingerbread out of the box stock?
CM7 is the closest you going to get to the first one. The second one doesn't exist. The only carrier with an official Gingerbread install is T-Mobile with the Nexus phones.
kommydroid gb build is pure stock, with stock launcher, no 4g though, no special anything just stock as raw can get
No cm is not even close to stock... Salvage is the closest thing that is activley deved on xda.

The guy that made "Sprint lovers Rom " now has a iPhone 4 so no more support.:......I was expecting new sense/ 2.3 as a bonus, other than that a Sprint clone would be fine.

At the current time, you won't find anything very 'Sprint-like' in a Gingerbread/Android 2.3 ROM that is fully functional, however I have no problem with Froyo/Android 2.2 and there are many great options out there that are in fact, very customized, rooted versions of the original Sprint/HTC Sense ROM.
I can only recommend what I personally preferred and do not claim that these are better than any others; I cannot speak highly enough for all the Devs
out there sharing the friuts of their labors for us to enjoy. However, I can give you a few suggestions with varying flavors that you can try.
One very nice, stable, fully functional and just too damned cool ROM is Calkulin's EViO. I believe that its still at v1.8 because there's really nothing more to do other than update apps after you install. You like it or you don't, but its just done. Everything works and works extremely well.
Similar to EViO but with a different flavor is the Azrael X v4.0 Again, this hasn't changed in quite some time, but like Calkulin's Froyo-based EViO, there's really nothing to fix...install, update, and enjoy. Either you like it or you don't.
There's many, many more to try so I'm not suggesting that you stop with those two. I've been through probably 25 ROMs, and 80-100 revisions. I simply recall enjoying those two the most of the full, Sense-based ROMs that I've used.
If you like a more stock-like ROM, much like the Sprint Lovers ROM, I always installed the 'Stock Turbo' ROM created by the same Dev that created the Azrael X ROM. It also hasn't changed in quite a while, but again...it doesn't need to be.
I hope that this helps, and good luck in your search. Thank you for your time.
Can anyone recommend a solid rom? I installed a froyo rom about 10 months ago on a friends hero.. he has been getting lots of daily random reboots.. other than those he likes it. I'm looking for a solid rom.. don't care if it's froyo or gb.. just something that works well.. a rom that's been around for a while possibly. I've been installing roms on my Evo 4g and galaxy s 4g.. but don't have experience with hero roms..
probably cyanogenmod. If you want sense UI stock is probably the way to go, because its the most stable. Personally the most stable custom sense rom I've used was fresh hero 2.4. I think it was android 2.1. Now if you dont mind not having sense then I sugest Cyanogenmod it is currently at stable release of 7.0.3 android 2.3 Gingerbread. I have looked around and tried many roms but im slow about how to install things and have issues with most roms, so I always end up back at Cyanogenmod. Hope this helps
the truth is everyone is going to say something different, there are going to be issues on every rom some very minor and some big it all depends my only suggestion is to install a coouple different roms like aoscmod hero deck and cm7 and a stock sprint rom then make back ups of them so he can test them out and easily switch back to the one he likes best.

@OP.....Quoted above is the best answer to this question. Bierce22 nailed it. A rom/setup that runs perfect for me is in no way relevant to how it's going to work on your friends phone. There are just too many variables between phones and between people's preferences & needs.
Hmm
I would recommend Cynogenmod 7 stable release.
Everything works, No reboots (In my experience) Super stable
and most important of all very smooth.
Just use Launcher pro (free version from market) or
the original launcher (see below for link) which comes with
GB because ADW is known for giving people force close problems.

thanks for the heads up guys.. I ended up putting the cm7/gb rom on it.. and so far so good. Runs pretty darn good.
Your random daily reboots could be from having your CPU speed set too high. Currently I'm building CM7 from source, but aosp is my other preference for stability, performance, etc. But as others above me said, each to their own. Find one that suits your friend best.
