From a Winmo user perpsective

Hey guys, I am switching over from the htc blackstone and have experienced with using roms cooked by chefs. However, I am a beginner when it comes to android and have a few questions regarding cooked roms.
How polished are the roms cooked by the major chefs here? Because when using roms cooked for winmo, each ones have irritating bugs that need to be reflashed constantly on a weekly basis.
Is the desire rom build still in its early beta stage?

Cyan's ROM is perfect from my use. I have yet to try a sense rom, like modaco's because of compatibility problems. I can vouch for cyans rom being FAST and without error.

As far as I can tell the (non Sense) ROMs from Cyanogen and MoDaCa are really stable and don't have any issues with standart android apps.

Same thing here. Desire ROM has Bluetooth and Cyanogen's ROM on my phone Gmail sync didn't work.

That's just WinMo surely?

Some of the roms can be, but thats mainly in test roms or "alpha" releases. Guys that create roms here are good at letting you know what issues are present in roms so you can decide if thats a big deal for you or not.

As a former winmo guy I would say there were plenty of stable roms that didnt require reflashing, ever. Where you using mtty? At any rate I have only tried enoms rom so far. It has a couple odd issues for me but most of them I found answers to, the gain over the stock rom is well worth dealing with them and the rom itself has been stable. I'll be giving CM a shot here shortly and see how that goes. There is in general a feeling of android development being in its infancy to me as compared to the winmo stuff.

The Desire rom is still in alpha stages, but it is polished enough to be considered a full release.

All ROMs available for N1 are near perfection. No major bugs.

don't be posting stuff that just isn't true... Pretty much all the ROMS are super stable (as I type this I just got a call I tried to pick up with bluetooth and the phone froze up, only happend about 3 times in the last month).
However, some ROMs are farther than others.. Right now from what I know ALL the SenseUI roms do not have 100% Bluetooth working... this is because the bluetooth stack has hooks into the SenseUI Kernel. The Nexus One can't use that kernel...
There are always little fixes for the ROMs that cooks produce, but on the whole the N1 has experienced very stable roms for the most part. (I'm comparing to lots of other phones I have played with like my HTC Tilt, LOL).

My experience coming from the infamous HD2 (Leo) to my very first Android which happened to be the Nexus one, i can only imagine how HAPPY you will become.
I have been a looooong time Big time fan of Winmo from Pocket PC 2002 to WM 6.5 until few weeks ago when i decided to abort the ship.
I have just realized how stupid i am to compromise all my time in a mobile operating system that keeps on wasting my time (i.e. Taking out the battery because it hangs/froze up for so many times in one day, never missed a day without a dropped call, constantly ending task in task manager to speed up the phone etc.. etc.. Upgrading firmware every freaking week thinking that maybe this time it will be more stable etc.. etc..)
I did not realized all these until one day, i have decided to write down how many times i would need to restart my infamous HD2 in one day, guess what?? 37 times!
to make it short, i sold it and got the nexus one! and for the first time in my life, i felt that this phone is worth every penny!
Although, i missed the HTC sense... i now rooted it and installed kingklick version of desire rom which is absolutely amazing! and much much better than my previous HD2!
Now that the Android Market is getting popular each day! Im Lovin it!
Since day 1, i have not even restarted the phone nor had experience any hangs or any malfunction.

dont even think about using the sense rom, they have bugs and get slow over time, not to mention the horrible battery drain from the htc sense system bc of all the apps running, just stick with cyanogen or MCR
edit: i also came from winmo (omnia user) and the flashing experience isnt as exciting as winmo's, i personally enjoyed flashing like every week, but on the nexus you will flash like once every now and then as their roms are more stable, and new rom releases arent that often as the nexus is still new and is pretty much the most up to date android phone, so dont expect much until newer phones with better or different interfaces are released...

what are you talkin about??? i am using kingklick version 1.0 desire rom for two weeks and never had an issue (besides the noted bluetooth and camera flash capture). which ofcourse are acceptable to my daily use.
the rom itself is fast compared to the original modaco alpha 21, although it is still based with the modaco (with kings mods, it made a lot of progress)
it also includes the wifi and usb tether application built in.
never had a problem with the 3g or hsdpa and reception as well.
overall ot is great!

From an Android Mod to ex ex WinMo user........please start asking question in Q&a or General.....Developmental section is strictly for that.

This is the exact reason I am NOT playing the rom flashing game with my Nexus One. **** got REAL old on Winmo

Getting an EVO 4G, where should I start?

So I've been on verizon as long as I can remember, (previous droid and droid X owner), but due to financial issues my family is moving to sprint, which includes me. I'm no stranger to the ROM game, i've flashed more ROMs and done so many nandroid backups i've lost count. So basically what i'm asking is what's the best ROMs for the Evo? I recall seeing something mid-september of the Desire HD rom's, but remember no 4g connectivity and camera, did that ever pan out? And as far as kernel's go anything specific I should be using? And lastly i'm assuming z4root works on the Evo without a hitch? Thanks

I use MIUI. You should know everything is personal opinion. Try em and see what you like.

Most people seem to be using CM ROM and others find DMG control or others more stable or whatever. I personally go between MIUI and CM depending on my tastes for the month.
Overall, both are two great ROMs, just find one that suits your taste and customize ability.

as others have stated before its all a matter of opinion i personally like Azrael X for sense and everything works cam 4G and what not for aosp i like CM6.1. kernels is a crapshoot since all phones like different things my phone likes CFS kernels and can be agressively undervolted without a problem some phones won't work with those conditions so you have to see what works for you. And Z4root does not work anymore your best bet will be the long way using the Fresh like pine cones thread or universal root by xhausx if your really lucky you and you get a older HBOOT phone like .97 or lower you can use unrEVOked. I like Cyanogen, personally. It runs really well, and I can live without 4G.

Many people, including me, like the heavily themed myns warm twopointtwo. Try them all see what you like. I will probably switch to cm once 4g is working for it though.

If I were you I'd take a look at all of the different ROM threads and get a feel both for the ROM and the community that supports that ROM. I've used Vaelpak, Fresh, and now I'm on Myn's Warm. I've liked them all but Warm is my absolute favorite.
When going through the threads you can get a real sense for the amount of support for that ROM and how much customization is available. I'd make a list of what's important to you also. Aesthetics is HUGE for me and I want a ROM that looks and feels good. Most AOSP functions look quite clunky to me and I wasn't a big fan of the Sense clock. But between Warm and the various customizations I was able to make it look how I wanted it to.
Be warned that there's thousands of pages to dig through so it's going to just take a lot of sampling on your part to figure out which one really suits you. If you ask 30 people you'll get a different answer each time so take our advice with a grain of salt.

Myn's ROM is amazing and it has 4G connectivity. I HIGHLY recommend it.

I'd second what JB said - the fresh like pine cones method works for newer EVO's. I got mine just after the hboot changed and went through about a week and a half of pain in the neck trying to get it rooted, and finally the revised method in that thread worked for me. Then I rooted another EVO using that method - in an hour flat. I would definitely recommend following that method very closely.
As to roms it's personal. I'm running avafroyo v10 and I like it, but I haven't tried a whole bunch of them so take that with a grain of salt. fresh worked pretty smoothly as well, but ava seems a bit faster IMO.

Having a hero and having enjoyed watching the development of Damageless and Flipz's rom, I use a stock rooted conservative rom on the EVO. I like sense (with all it's overhead). Kingx's kernels (with links that are banned on this site) are free and work well with the stock roms. I'm using BFS11 and twelve depending on the week.
So it's a matter of personal preference, and these are mine. Good luck.

there is no bad rom, they are all great, there are lots of fanboys that side with their rom more vocally than others (looking at the myns followers) but you wont go wrong with any, if your in need of 4g stick with a sense based, if 4g isn't a concern try an aosp variant, all roms have their own thread and you can get a great idea of the support behind them and problems that each have, I recommend flashing them all like I have so you get the best first hand experience then find a good kernel to pair with it
I also recommend you make a nandroid backup using amon ra 1.8 recovery to save your rsa keys then using clockwork so you can use rom manager to flash your roms as its super easy and requires little hands on during the process

I'm new to the HTC world in general, just made the switch from the Epic 4G and looking forward to hit the ground runnning here.
I already have loaded the last update on my phone and got GB, root and all my apps up and running via stock UI.
Now I want to venture to the world of roms and I got much to read (I know) but just wanted a quick down to earth suggestion of what is the common used ROM here, like CM7? or any other good ones.
I don't care much of Sense or if its AOSP, I choose performance over that kind of stuff because there will always be a way to change the view. So any good well tested kernels or roms suggestions would be good.

Actually, if you don't care about Sense, CM7 is a great ROM to run.
The main downside to the AOSP ROMs is that you can't use EPST (the dialer codes/update profile/PRL).
A lot of other people are running MikG (Sense), Synergy (Sense), MIUI (AOSP) or Deck's (AOSP).
I usually switch between CM7 nightlies, MikG and Salvage Mod myself.
Good Sense kernels for Gingerbread are Freedom and ChopSuey. Good AOSP kernels include Tiamat and Savaged-Zen.

Thanks for the sugestions, I may opt for trying out the kernels first before the Rom, getting lazy with the wipe / reinstall apps right now, but I will check out the Rom threads and keep myself updated for when I'm ready to jump ship

Which MIUI rom do I download?

I'm confused.
At the moment I'm on Android Revolution. MIUI looks good for me, which one do I flash?

Just flash both at once, boot manager style.

To be honest I recommend the original from here first. http://miuiandroid.com/
Only because as it's maybe your first time you can experience the rom without any bugs or things which need changing (like the language setting to stop Android Market crashing).
If you like it you can try other versions of it from XDA. I used Freshly Squeezed for ages and enjoyed it. Thread / Screenshots.
MIUI is really nice. Before MIUI I was on CyanogenMod for months too, as well as trying most other roms.

Using freshly squeezed edition, 1.10.14 and 1.10.21 works ok for me, though I really haven't tried the other versions of MiUI for DHD.
Came from cm7 and sense but MIUI is just beauiful and fast.

You should try the freshly squeezed version, very stable I haven't had any issues with it

I would suggest using the original one, only for the advantage of OTA updates. You dont have to flash everytime a new version comes out.
P.S: I havent used any of the other flavors, so this is the only advantage i know about

My DHD is running MIUI.us and it has OTA updates, too. Maybe a bit slower than the original MIUI, though. MIUI.us was the first MIUI for me and I haven't shifted to another MIUI as I think it maybe the same.

I liked the SCI systune versoin. You get a very good cpu control app for free and "a user" makes very nice subtle tweaks to the rom!

No one will be able to tell you what one to use. Sense they are all mostly the same except for a theme here and there.
Me personally I would say don't ever use an MIUI rom but then again I don't like people breaking the android laws like MIUI does.

Currently on Speedmachine v4 because I need a little stronger battery compared to GB roms, so voted for other. Otherwise it would be DeckedX.

The main problem here is that you can't change your vote, so when I flash a new rom i can't update :/

Very interesting thread.
I've currently hoped from Ligux 2.3.7 to heroine 2.1 sense.. The pure speed of this Rom is phenominal, I mean just when pulling down the status bar for example you really feel the smoothness.. and its actually in real time, so doesn't come down 5 seconds later. But yeah I've figured that I don't need android 2.3 or 2.2, all the upgrades are really unecessary for me personally. All I need is calls, text and whatsapp. If I needed games or web truthfully this phone would have been long gone by now.

I use the official CyanogenMod 6.1 release, with Flykernel 13 @264-576. Stable, battery life of 2-4 days, decent speed, vanilla Froyo.
Eclair wasn't really an option, I think it's quite behind the newer versions, I hate Sense and Gingerbread never run smoothly enough on Hero, so vanilla Froyo was the best compromise for me.
Why didn't I go with one of the local ROMs? Not to offend anyone, but most of the CM6 ROMs here are butchered, full of ugly themes and unnecessary changes. Show me one that runs better than my configuration and I'll be happy to change to it.

I'm using CyanogenMod 7 but i think i'll revert to some 2.2 rom like FroydVillain ot CM6, not sure yet

why don't have Elelinux-7.1-Hero-v3.6 Android 2.3.7 it is one of the best roms

I think if you looking at performance and stable Elelinux-7.1-Hero-v3.6 and cyanogenmod are the best choice for Htc Hero

Elelinux, last one (7.1 v3.6), not the light or the Custom version, just the standar one with the default kernel
