I'm using T-Mobile USA network and all my specs can be found in signature for Rom, Radio etc
I'm on radio 2.14 because on 2.15 it would sound like I was in a tunnel and on 2.12 it seemed to drop carrier more often then now on 2.14.
I'm in Williamsburg, VA (right near Virginia Beach, VA) and the coverage area is good where I'm at.
My phone will just randomly go into unknown carrier. It still has bars and functionality but it just goes into unknown carrier so I go into settings/wireless & networks/mobile networks/network operators. AT&T and T-Mobile show up and I select T-Mobile and it registers it again as the registered network.
Anyone experience this issue I for the life of me can't figure out why or how it does it or how to get it off of select best network automatically in the settings and just have it select T-Mobile network.
Thanks to all who answer.
have you got roaming enabled?
Go to setting and turn off roaming!!

Under the Settings->Phone->Network menu, I have the following options on the MDA:
Find Network (current network=T-Mobile)
and
Network Selection (Select Manual or Automatic).
If I select Manual and then choose the Cingular network (which I know is stronger in my area), it seems to temporarily change to Cingular, then change back.
Is this a property of the network preventing me from using the other provider? Or is there a registry change that would allow it?
When are the networks going to share their towers??
Uhm...as far as I know you can't roam on cingular/T-Mobile, you AT&T is the only provider that allows GSM roaming. Could be wrong though.
My BA does the same thing.
I assume it is a network setting that the providers can control.
During and after Hurricane Katrina, my T-mobile service came up with Cingular, and we were able to have coverage. This lasted about a month or so.

Well... being a T-mobile customer since past 4 years I know that in areas where T-mobile network is low, it automatically switches to Cingular. So I am assuming that there is some sort of a tie-up between T-mobile and cingular for sure. Here is one thing you could try.
Start the phone in ur PDA. Under the talk sign you should see MENU> Inside menu u shall see Options... go in the options> there shall be a sub menu called NETWORK. Under that Keep the network selection type manual. Then go in SET NETWORK menu. It shall download all the preset roaming partners with tmobile. Uncheck all except Cingular. Click OK and exit. Hope this works for !!! havent tried it myself cauz I get strong T-mobile reception in my area and cannot select Cingular in my area.
Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.
Regards,
Dave
Anyone have this problem? It happens ever time

Hmm.... seems like your phone might be in WCDMA mode only... It should be in WCDMA-Preferred since you plan on using 3G and 2G
Go to your phone dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*
and Diagnostics Menu should come up..... Go to PHONE INFORMATION.... Scroll down and Set Network Type to: WCDMA Preferred
see if that helps...
Thanks for the reply i am on tmobile and it is defaulted to GSM. Will changing it be any different than GSM?
my phone does that as well right now at home even though i have it on WCDMA preferred, t-mo has been having issues with their 4G towers and their DNS servers lately that has been affecting many people with newer phones/SIM cards and in 4G areas, t-mo has not released an ETA on a fix but i have been dealing with it for a month now at my home and i am about ready to switch carriers

Nope, it'll still be the same. WCDMA-Preferred means that then phone will Prioritize 3G/4G signal over an EDGE signal. So If you are in a decent 4G/3G coverage the phone will set itself into 3G/4G mode... and when you move into an area where you have a weaker 3G/4G signal...t han the phone will be in EDGE mode.
Keep in mind that if you're referring about using WCDMA Preferred in a 3G/4G coverage area - but only 2G works - then you have a network issue. This isn't so much a device issue as it is a MSISDN issue on the network or a potential tower issue.
If you get no signal on 3G/4G and signal is there on 2G - check your coverage first - then if coverage shows you should have 3G/4G, call TMO and let them know, they'll need to do a service request or trouble ticket based on the location and breadth of the issue you're having.
So I just registered for the T-Mobile UK/Orange network sharing, and I'm all registered
I've enabled data roaming, however under "Network Operators" I have an option for "T-Mobile" and one for "T-Mobile Orange"
Which one should I choose?
Got a feeling i posted in the wrong section but anyway yeah, whats everyone else on TMo doing?
Just leaving it on automatically detect?

Leave it on auto.
It'll default to T-Mobile and only use T-Mobile/Orange when you have no signal on T-Mobile itself.
When roaming onto T-Mobile/Orange, you'll only get Edge speeds maximum as opposed to the speeds you can get on T-Mobile's 3G network.
Some time later this year, they're supposed to be merging the 3G networks together as well but until then, it's 2/2.5G only.
Teampokerface
Keep it on auto.
good info, cheers
At first I thought this would be useful, but I find its more annoying than anything. Mine hogs orange, which is pain. Everytime I load up the internet its connected to orange, I do a network scan t-mobile appears and I have a full HSPDA signal and yet it favours oranges Edge or G with unuseable data speeds. every friggin time!!!!!!!
It should only switch to the T-Mobile/Orange network when you don't have coverage on T-Mobile's own network.
It might be an issue with how your handset is set up that it's defaulting to T-Mobile/Orange.
If need be, you can actually opt out of the signal share by texting STOP to 2121.
o right, ok thanks I may consider doing that then as there isnt many places I dip out of signal for long on t-mobile anyway. Having to constantly go through settings to change it back to t-mobile is very annoying.
I recently rooted my nexus s and loaded up NSCollab.
After successfully flashing I cannot connect to mobilicity network! I've tried to do manual search for network but all I see is
Rogers Wireless
302320
302490
Mobiclity does not pop up and I've tried more than 10 times. I tried to load another ROM (MIUI 1.7) but I still can't connect.
HELP!!!!
you do know rogers and mobility use different cell bands, right?

What he's seeing is Rogers' 2G network.
OP:
What I suggest is go to your dialer and hit *#*#4636#*#* which will take you to a test menu. Hit "Phone Information," scroll down, "Set preferred network type" to WCDMA.
Also check your coverage area. I live by the lake and when I tried out Mobilicity I had ZERO reception. The frequency they run on has weak building penetration. I had dropped calls at Bay and Queen.
I figured it out. The network ID 302320 is actually Mobilicity.....I'm not sure why it appears this way when I updated ROM's but that's how it is.
Once I connected to 302320 all is good.
Thanks guys for the help!
