what about making wp7 matching the hd2 buttons ?
how to map the hard buttons on hd2 using wp7
it is really hard to feel like iam using the wrong button
wp7 on hd2 can make sense if the buttons are doing what it meant to do
using android on hd2 it dosent it is not the hardware for it even if it works it is hard to accept the windows button on hd2 cause simply it is not windows at all it is different operating system
but with windows phone 7 it is ok
the cookers of wp7 tried to make it workable but not beautiful
what if hit on the screen to turn on the camera and not the call button
why not to use the call button to call !
how to map the hard buttons
WP7 keymap only has a certain set of buttons.. The HD2 buttons where mapped to what normal WP7 phone buttons would do.. Theres no call button.. you cant map the camera to the screen since its not a button and even if that was possible that would mean that the phone would be useless since whenever your touched the screen the camera would show up
WP7 is made for only 6 buttons... Volume Keys (2) Power, back, Search, Windows Key
Thats one of the suppose reasons why HD2 wasnt offically updated to WP7 besides the fact that it would cripple HD7 sales.. Microsoft wanted three buttons on front , Volume keys, Dedacated Camera key and power
You can remap them but your only limited by the WP7 default keys

Now you have 3 votes, and my vote is "I am ok with the ported buttons", here the answer... if you anter Market and hit HOME to SEARCH an app, how could you do this if the HD2 doesn't have a SEARCH button? Microsoft don't put a softkey in the Market for those who has not a WP7 device.
If you press CALL button to take a picture, how could you take a picture without a hardkey? I don't like this new app to the camera, I use Microsoft's.
Sorry man, the developers did what was necessary to make WP7 running on our devices, that's all.
We are extremely fortunate that we even have WP7 running on our HD2s, and it's unbelievably amazing that it runs as good as it does. WP7 is very new and has barely been cracked open by devs yet... the ins and outs are not known like they are with WinMo which has been hacked and modified for years. Know one knows enough to make custom versions of WP7.
So basicly, what you're asking is impossible right now.

It was one of the reasons sure but not the main reasons.
Another reason is that the HD2 only supports 2 point multitouch and not 4 point, I have noticed that in a few apps/games I have downloaded in the marketplace.
It is true that it's not fair what Microsoft did but if you were on their place what had you done?
They are dependend on their partners like Lg, Samsung, HTC
Everyone is worth pure gold for them.
I can't imagine that HTC spends money for modifing the wp7 for HD2 what loses value every day (I think now it worths only 280€) when they can do the same for a new device they can get 600€ for that.
Especially Htc made it wrong because the new HD7 isn't equiped with enough strong hardware to be really better then the HD2.
In youtube some guys show that the HD2 is even faster then the HD7 which isn't at all any argument for htc do sell the HD7.
But the problem is that HTC is the most known (at my opinion) smartphone seller for windows phones/devices if they do something bad, then the people loose already the trust on other wp7 phones.
But to be honest I am really interested why the Hd2 is faster then the HD7, does anyone know why?

Are you kidding? This is not a development thread at all. WP7 will always only be a port for the HD2. By the time that there are tools and enough knowledge available to make a WP7 ROM specially made for HD2 from scratch and not a port, no developers will still be interested in even working with the HD2.
We will always be using a port on the HD2.
If this was posted in ROM development, you will have a lot of people flaming and saying it needs to be moved to general.

Lol troll much? Everyone in this section of the forum loves the HD2.
You obviously don't understand the limitations we have. Your Arab, so why not
Pay a pro developer to make you a full version rather than a port . Which has all
The mods you want. After all fur someone to do this means making a lot of time after
Work to do a lot more work.
Your choice is simple.
1) Quit complaining
2) Pay someone to do it
3) Learn to do it yourself.

Yeah and that's the same reason you get allot of n00bs posting crap in wrong places and also the reason they are moved out of development.
This topic is not development, its a discussion.
The dev forum is for posting dev work, dev info, dev tuts etc.

While i agree with the 3 choices you provided, i think the rest of the message is a little OTT... might want to think about how your comments can easily be perceived to be racist...
My 2 cents on the buttons, is that the current implementation is the most logical of the choices, giving the best of options for actually using WP7.
If your really bugged by it then go by a sharpie and draw new pictures on the buttons...

i agree with you. But i happen to be half moroccan
which makes me half african/arab. Its an inside thing rather than anything else.
Also i dont know if its just me but i love the layout of the buttons. When i found out that my HD2 had a camera button i was rather happy tbh. Plus to answer calls all you do is swipe answer which itself looks pretty good.
thanks for the advice though i wrote this after a sleepless night

is there any way to disable "longpressed call button" for cam when is locked? i always find unlocked phone in my pokets!!
I dont understand why this kid is complaining all the time. The portation to our HD2 so far is excelent and we all can be happy that we can use this great device with the latest softwares available.
If some limitations are bothering you too much than you have to purchase a HD7.

You can disable this button in the "Pictures & Camera" section in your options menu.

Coming from the tmobile wing aka HTC herald i thought the HD would be a major upgrade but i have been let down again. I know i could switch roms and get a better experience but why should i have to do this on a device that should be top of the line right out of the box. I dont expect a whole lot out of a phone expect for when i press something it comes up right then. This phone is so laggy and no matter what i do its still slow. I spent 700USD on this screen because thats all the HD is, just a big screen an i am not satisfied with it at all. I tried my best to give the HD a chance but once the samsung omnia hd arrives, to ebay or craiglists my Touch HD goes. Its so annoying texting someone and responding an when i close down the sms window i have 10 new text messages from the same person i was just had a conversation with. Sometimes when i receive a text the phone vibrates forever until i press the home key. When i try to delete all messages the phone starts to count how many messages i have and when it reaches the max number of messages i have it starts counting over again and just repeats this cycle until i hit the end key. No matter how many times i set for a message, voicemail or notification to show up on the screen it automatically unchecks itself. I cant even take pics of my childern because the camera is slower than a turtle. Sometimes when i hit the power button to turn the screen off nothing happens at all, the screen is still on. If i didnt pay so much for it i would have thrown it at a wall a long time ago. Windows mobile just isnt for me anymore longer.
to make things easier I suggest you'd buy
1. a camera
2. stand alone GPS system
3. Nokia 1110i
Some lucky person will be getting the best phone on the market nice and cheap
In my opinion, you want 'out of the box, no messing' you should have bought an iPhone. You want a powerful, adaptable device then you get the HD.

No. The new Omnia HD runs Symbian as operating system.
Sounds to me like you're just impatient.
Dont' know what rom is in your device but i used my HD with stock rom for about 1 month and half and i didn't find any of the problems you mentioned
i left winmo devices for good twice and if your like me you'l come back because NOTHING ELSE comes close but please try a different ROM thats what the point of these phones are they are massively adjustable to what YOU want.

In the time it took to post the original post... he could have flashed either miri's v11 6.5 or dutty's 6.1 3.3.

HD for sale soon hehe
I am on my 3rd HD already. Everything i sell it and want to get something new i would always just get the HD back. It might not be a perfect device but a lot better than all the other WM phones i have used.
Even my iphone fanboy friend came back to the HD after the iPhone because of the amazing screen and the TouchFlo3D

I bet a lot of the so-called "problems" he's having stems from the 3rd party software installed on his phone, rather than the phone itself acting up.
Unless the phone was really buggy, problems don't just happen by themselves. And seeing as the majority of users on this forum aren't complaining about the same issues you have, the problem is most likely with the software installed.
If you can't deal with these issues never get a smartphone. especially a Windows Mobile.
The HD is definitely by far the most flexible and best smartphone device for me at the moment. I like to be able to surf the web without having to always zoom in and out like crazy
My own complaint is that the HD's screen quality (color wise) is no where near as good as the X1... but I can live with that.
coolfire +1 lol
they all come back
ok if any of you that are leaving have a t8285 for sale let me know.
I like the other posters am really curious to know if the OP is using a stock rom, and if he ran the HTC updates or even the new rom.
As another user posted i had no such problems for the brief moment in time the stock rom lived on my device...and i have to say i am completely, entirely infatuated with Dutty and his work.
It is also likely that you have a defective machine or as another user mentioned your 3rd party software is causing problems.
I'm not going to say my HD is perfect, but the usage is an improvement over the 8525 i had before...and there is no way i could go back to such a device...now the Toshiba tG01...that i want...though i desperately am in need of a us carrier or 850 mhz 3g version
Have finally decided to go back to using my Storm 2, with all the great features the HD2 has, I just cannot get the hang of the damn keyboard..tried all third party ones, none were accurate for speedy one handed typing. The registry fixes seemed to work sometimes and not other times - It was driving me insane.
Typing something like..."ok mate, see you in a minute.." turned into a game of Buckaroo, or minesweep!
I will miss the great screen and super web browsing - not to mention great customisability features of the device
...but to be honest, come to think of it, thats all I will miss.
Great forum here
Really I can't understand the problem is in the device or person?
I'm replying this from my device only, typed one handed without issues and without any patch installed. It just need some time to get use to the new device.
I actually find it way easier to type in my HD2 comparing to my iPhone with t9 support.
There is some difficulty with high sensitivity, but its compensated with the t9 error correction.
Anyways, best of luck with your another device.

Stumbling along using T9 is hardly a good test of whether a keyboard is up to the task now is it? It's cheating.
The fact remains that typing on the HD2 keyboard - and I mean properly typing with no kids' correction services* - is pretty damned hard work. I have to correct almost every word and it is extremely tedious. The keyboard seems to have regular funny turns too where it becomes super-sensitive and where some of the keys, mainly backspace, adopt a mind of their own. Anyone who defends this keyboard, let alone says it's good, is surely having a laugh. I can manage it better than most, a few friends have had a go and it put them off the handset instantly. They had at first loved the screen but the keyboard soon had them turning their noses up.
*T9 and the like were invented to make multi-tap keypads more useable for the masses. I never used it then so with a full QWERTY at my disposal I'm certainly not interested. I'm a very fast typist and can bang-out whole words faster than people can using T9. I should not have to go hunting for new keyboards or using T9 workarounds on a premium device. It's just not on and I fully appreciate why the OP has ditched his handset.

A fact? Just like it's fact that ALL HD2's have hardware faults?
What you think is a fact is in fact not a fact at all but nonsense. It's one of the best software keyboards ever. Really better than the iPhone's that, if you belive the common opinion, was previously the best (I had an iPhone, I know the HD2 has a better keyboard).
Now don't tell me about threads where people complain bout the keyboard. I told you before why that would be stupid (though I'm sure you didn't get it...):

You'd also realize that this is a forum where people come when they try to get solutions - people who don't have problems usually don't tell everyone about it. Your conclusion that just because you have two faulty devices all must be faulty is total nonsense - almost all devices are perfectly fine and even more important, are of much higher quality than most other phones (*cough* iPhone *cough*)

Along comes one of those people who is 'surely having a laugh'.
I really cannot imagine a worse keyboard. I'm sorry but whatever you're comparing it to is not worthy of any accolades if the HD2 keyboard beats it into submission. You cannot seriously tell me that inputting text on this device is anything but a tedious and frustrating experience.
Again, you show that you're unable to read.
As I said (and you couldn't read) I compared to the iPhone I had (and the Touch HD). The HD2 has a much better keyboard.
If it's true that the iPhone had the best keyboard (that's what people say), then now the HD2 has the best one.
You draw the conclusion that just because YOU are not able to type on it, it's bad? You're much more of a stupid troll than I thought.

Actually only stupid people return their devices because of small, easily fixable software flaws... and if they're not only stupid but also trolls and/or psychologically disturbed, they open threads to tell everyone that they've returned their devices.

I have just reviewed your entire history of posts on this forum; I am surprised that you had nothing ever to say except to bash & complain about the HD2, enflame others with your sordid commentary, and trying ever so ardently to persuade others that this is the worse phone in history, despite that we all know the opposite!
I believe that you are deliberately trying your very hardest to ruin our experience with the HD2, actively creating and perpetuating mirages of exaggerated hardware faults, causing unrest among the forum members, and continuously complaining about everything in the HD2. This is not a casual accusation, this is the result of a comprehensive review of what goes back to your first post.

I'm on my second one, the first went back. Went back to my iphone. Keyboard on iphone is way more accurate. Hd2 need a major overhaul typing is very hard.
Typing on my touch hd was way better and t9 sucks. I'm giving this thing a couple more days but its not looking good.
Just so you all know in the last two years ive had and loved an x7500, a touch, a touch hd, then iphone (which i dislike very much) and now the hd2. This according to the specs was THE!!! phone i was waiting for. Software wise its just not close to the hardware spec. It needs a lot of work. especially for the price. We will see what the next few days bring.

I am due an upgrade on my phone and I am trying to decide between an iphone and a HTC HD2. I prefer the HTC as a phone but the apps on the iphone is making it a hard decision.
I am on the road constantly as a field technician so would like to have sat nav, music, games and videos on the phone to keep me entertained when I am in the middle of nowhere with some down time.
Is there anything that can be done to the HTC to make it more versatile like a jailbroken iphone? would the HTC be able to do what I am looking for or am I better going for an iphone?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer me some advice.

When you say "Is there anything that can be done to the HTC to make it more versatile like a jailbroken iphone?"
What exactly do you mean?
The HD2 is a very versatile handset from the start, and no need to jailbreak to get full functionality

thanks for the reply, what I mean is are you limited to what can be put onto the HTC? I have been into several shops stocking them and the staff dont seem to know much about them and keep trying to sell me an iphone, possibly because they are getting better commisson on the iphone?
I have looked around online for info as to what can be put onto the HTC but cant seem to find out much about it. applications seem to be very limited for what seems to be a better device than the iphone.
would the HTC be able to meet the criteria I have for the phone?

Heh - and then some.
You need to look for software for windows mobile, not HTC. The only real things you need to consider are that you need software that is fully touch compatible, it needs to be WVGA compatible (you can get away with a lot of VGA software too, as they mostly rely on the width in portrait, which is the same for both resolutions), and is it for the right version of Windows. Normally, you can get away with anything that is Windows Mobile 6.1 onwards, but that's not always the case.
Just google for windows mobile software and forget about jailbait iPhones. It ultimately comes down to whether you want a smartphone or a toy (I'm not actually knocking the iPhone - I think it's great, but it is a toy).
Incidentally, don't worry about MarketPlace too much. Most people think it's crap and there's a reason for that... it pretty much is. If you want apps wrapped up in one place, try OpenMarket. You can get it here...

thanks for that.
I have seen iphones running sat nav with lane assist and speed camera alerts, would it be possible to get the same kind of sat nav on the HTC and if so how much would it cost me?
Really dont want to go down the iphone route like half of the rest of the world has, would like to get something a little different.
The HD2 can do whatever the iPhone can...minus the ease of use [sometimes]. Sometimes it doesn't work out of the box because there are countless version of builds for manila and such...and only one for iphone. Pretty much the only gripe people will have is that they have to go and FIND whatever it is that they're looking for on the HD2, whereas everything is readily available on the app store for the iphone. You should take some time and play with each device and see what the pros and cons are for YOU. If it's too troublesome for you to dig through different versions of a program to play your video or whatnot, then it's better to get an iphone.

in the uk we get co pilot bundled with the phone as standard. it works perfectly and integrates very will with the phones gps. i used to run tom tom (latest version) on my omnia, which is also a win mobile phone so see no reason why it shouldn't run well on the HD2 as well.
both tom tom and co pilot work with additional info such as speed cameras etc.
i am sure that google will be your friend, just search for navigation software windows mobile or similar and am sure plenty of results will ensue.

thats a fair point, the reliability of the iphone is worrying me a bit as well. Are there any common issues with the HTC phone?

depends on the severity of the "issues." I'm on AT&T and have not encountered any kind of problems that some people have.
I don't have the faulty capacitive screen
I don't have any battery drainage issue (good for 2-3 days)
I don't have SMS not sending/receiving
I don't have SMS sending to the wrong person
The phone doesn't froze on me [unless it's my own doing]
etc etc..
So outside of you installing some rogue software/program that cause whatever issues that you might encounter, the phone itself is as perfect as a smartphone goes. I can't really pinpoint anything significant problem about this phone.

are most of those problems possibly just down to settings being incorrect or as you say installing something that the phone software doesnt like?

Some is hardware and some is software (ie, manila). Pretty much all of the problems I've listed have been solved ever since their early release back in Oct/Nov.
yeah, we all know that there are about 100.000 apps crusing around
but, let me say it, which one do you REALLY need?
my brothers got an ipod touch with about 100apps on it...but for everydayusing there are only a handful...
so i would say, that you can even find such apps for windows mobile...everything you really need...and not 100.000 apps, from which are about 98% useless imho.

thats another fair point, dont need lots of apps just some to suit what I am looking for. a decent sat nav and video/internet would probably do me.
mh...one advice from myself: ask also in an apple forum
i think nearly everyone here will tell you only good things about hd2 and winmo

good point well made. ill do that.
The Worst phone I have ever owned save yourself the trouble of buying one.
The pros - Camera, video, and video playback
The cons = Everything else
its hard to even justify it as a smart phone, maybe if I was not on a forced data plan I would think differently, if sold as a dumbphone. Just not enough apps to do anything with , and it takes about 60 tweaks to make it decent
I think the only thing saving it is the bing turn by turn released today, otherwise dont waste your time on this! Get a used android device, or the new sprint evo instead
Winmo 6.5 is dead, the market proves it.
And yes you can scour the net for apps but you wont find many that are any good, over all the phone sucks
Good for you. Good luck.
Thank you for your input on this matter.
Now, who are you?

Well i have to agree i love the phone myself,It all depends on what your using the phone for if you wanted more than carry around one of those mini laptops. Most people that i can tell that dont know how to use something correctly normally dont like the product.compared to a droid n iphone i too have each of them and they dont hold water but thats anothe thread.good luck dude
I don't get it.
I've gone through 2 HD2s, do you guys NOT have freezing issues? or you just don't think there is anything wrong w/ having to reset the phone, deleting messages, not keeping large amounts of music files, having a slow SDHC card come with a high performance device, or anything of that sort?
we all know the problems of hd2 ,so we don't need you to remind us if you don't want to apply more tweaks go and flash custom roms ,otherwise go and buy another shi**Y android phones which has the settings menue of a phone 6 years old and leave us in peace ,
pointless thread please close it

+1. This thread should be closed. There are constructive criticisms but this just falls over the edge.
No point opening a thread like this oh and don't let the door hit you on your way out.

Well i hated the droid and the iphone is a greedy sorry ass company, and hd2 is an awesome phone and the only problems i have with it is because of my own doing which is my guess their problem to start,if you dont know dont touch it,
Good. Go away.
Threads like this ("No more HD2!") as well as HD2 appreciation threads should be against the rules. They're useless and a waste of space. If people want an actual review, they'll read an actual review. Sorry, but your brief spasm of trollbait material isn't a review.

I'm unable to connect to the server...saw it in google news...
Even if it was true, current handsets wouldn't be able to make use of it, as there are too many buttons.
I was wondering... what is the problem with having more buttons? If we had less, I could have understood that it represented a problem, but if there are more... I don't see how that could bother such a high-end OS. Can`t the remaining buttons simply be mapped to do ordinary stuff? Or in the worst case, can`t they simply be rendered useless?

Thats what I thought too, but every single piece of info I can see on WinPhone 7 (including the development guides) is that there are only mappings for a particular layout of buttons.
I'm guessing these are mapped to particular ASCII codes or something, almost certainly different ones to the button codes on the HD2 at current (not sure how easy it is to change these, maybe hardware driver level?).
Here is what i do not get about the buttons. Why not leave the answer and hangup buttons out of the equasion? they serve a simple purpose. they have the 3 middle buttons for the stupid os controls.
i saw that today, i have the link http://www.officialwire.com/main.php?action=posted_news&rid=198480

heh, four or so more months and the first wp7 phones will start being announced. (unless they stick to MS's usual schedule of being put back again and again)
Still, there'l never be another OS as tweakable as this, from here on out its gonna be locked down and locked in all teh way.
