Still trying to decide - Omnia 7 General

Hi Guys , first post and hoping for some help.
I'm due to upgrade this week and am trying to decide between the Desire Hd and Samsung Omnia 7 . I like the idea of Windows 7 and can probably live with no card expansion . Can anyone tell me how the battery life compares between the 2 ?
Can i also ask if loading mp3s i have on my laptop is possible on the Omnia 7 ?
I'd appreciate any advice anyone can offer
Cheers
Darren

Well i get pretty good battery life I have data always on and go on the internet regulary and listen to music. Get a day and a half out of it.
I like Windows Phone 7. Its nice clean and simple but polished. Games and Apps are far superior to anything on Android anyway.
Cant say anything bad about the Desire HD but that the build quality has gone crap compared to the previous desire. Same happened from HD2 to HD7 transittion. I had a HD2 before and now have HD7 and the build quality is not impressive. its a beautiful phone but im scared to break it
My biggest con on Omnia is the 8GB memory. 300 songs and a few Xbox Live Games on your phone and you will be dealing with memory low warning :S
Its managable but one thing that really could have been thought better before going for 8

Of course! It syncs with the excellent Zune Player (you can download it from Zune.net to have a taste of it).
Zune IS the software that allows for you to sync all your stuff to WP7, pics, music, podcasts, etc...

That's why I got the 16GB version
As for the battery, I get a day of fairly heavy use easy. That's with both the data-connection (3G) and WiFi on constantly. Definitely better than the HD2 and also the HD7.

Well you can't get the 16gb version in Ireland :S
Sent from my OMNIA7 using Board Express

Well that's mine despatched , be with me tomorrow i hope

T-Mobile customer??? Stuck between the only two decent phones they have to offer??
Yeah me too
Damn you T-Mobile..........
Think Im gonna end up with the DHD to be honest, then flash WP7 to my HD2.
The only thing that puts me off the Omnia7......... its a Samsung
Still in two minds though........
Bit of a pointless post I know but this has been annoying me for months now...

Having tried two HTC models (HD7 and Mozart), the LG Optimus7 and the Samsung Omnia7 I've come to the conclusion that HTC is no longer what they once were. I would rank them, best to worst, Samsung, LG, Mozart, HD7 - all things taken into consideration. Sure, it's still a Samsung, but it's by far the best device out there, especially if you pick up the 16GB model which, if not available where you live, can be imported from Germany for less than what it costs in the UK anyway (as long as you don't get it "free" on contract of course).

Getting it free on contract is pretty much the only way I can get a new phone, unless I sell the HD2 and thats never gonna happen.....
I'm judging Samsung purely on the reputation they have for they're Android handsets because WP7 isnt mature enough to do so. Which may be quite unfair on my part I guess.....

Ahh right...
I think the line ups are pretty similar since they're owned by the same parent company.

agree. Non of the HTC handsets are what they used to be.
They feel cheap and fragile. Sold my HD7 and sticking with Omnia 7 for now.
The build quality of HD7 was abosolute rubbish. Speaker quality rubbish. Lag in panorama apps on HD7 was bigger. Battery life is shorter than omnia. Button feedback was horrible compared to omnia
I mean i would look at Samsung as having a bad reputation for Android hansets. But they seem to have hit the spot with the Omnia 7
Biggest Cons of Omnia is the slippery coating and then 8GB is too little space.

Agreed, the phone is way to slippery. I bought some skins from GelaSkins which solved the issue (looks great also) but even though they are thin it's caused an issue with my Brodit active car-holder :/

TAKEN THE FINAL WALK :) Athena has to go

After much huffing and puffing i have finally put the nail in my ATHENA experience for the past 7 months.
I have really enjoyed using it but it just falls short in a few major areas for me to continue.
1.Its just TOO BIG as a phone, its ok when im sat down but at weekends and evenings its just too annoying to carry about, removing the sim is like surgery so i dont want to do that too often
2. Its just TOO SMALL to be a half decent laptop, The browser sucks and how ever much you dress up WM6 its just Not XP!
3. I dont drive a car so GPS means nothing to me
So my missus has kindly given me her LG viewty upgrade as a early xmas pressie and today i finally won a bid on ebay for a black EEE pc so thats that.
The viewty is a cracking phone and it feels really weird to hold something so small again as a phone.
It can teach the athena a few lessons as well.
1. It plays back DIVX PERFECTLY full screen no jumping out of the BOX! why the athena is so crap at this is beyond me.
2.It streams movies and TV much better via ORB .. NO BUFERING!
3.Its compatable with Mobile TV .. SKY FOOTY for £5 here i come. You can even connect it to a TV like the Athena.
Obviously theres loads it cant do but too be honest i feel like i have dropped a burden carrying that thing about
with me.
If i was a regular driver and would use the GPS i would keep it, i dont really use any of the Office apps either.
So up on EBAY it goes , superlight weight LAP top and almost feather like phone here i come

Your contributions on these forums will be missed despite the idiot who posted the previous wasteful and utterly pointless previous comment.. i am considering a move away too and i have a choice of phones to keep and the sale of my Athena will fund my next purchase just waiting for reviews of the shift to see if i want one or not!!! Enjoy the eee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm thinking of trading in my Athena for a Viewty or N95 8gb, but they don't seem to be going for very much. I'd have to supplement my Athena (or rather, Ameo) about 90quid at Cex to get a Viewty.
How much did you get for your Ameo Spacecat?
I am still using the Ameo for mobile internet at which it is great, as a phone it is useless to be honest so I still use the Artemis for voice related stuff.
What I want next is the Touch Cruse as this has everything to die for as far as I am concerned, I have just got the wife a Touch (elf) and its a great bit of kit, add the extras the Touch Cruse has on board and this has to be the best combo unit going.
I very nearly got the Viewty yesterday, but I found the attraction of the Touch better - all I need to do is teach HID to use it! (this could take some time) - Mike

Sold my Ameo tonight.
Traded in a DS Lite and some games to get myself a new handset at Cex. This shop is not my ideal choice, but they offer a warranty that lasts a year and covers the phone being blocked (something that Ebay can't do). This turned out to be fortuitous.
I decided I quite like LG Viewtys (after initially deciding I don't). It was either the Viewty or the N95 8GB. Nothing else really holds a candle - sorry Sony Ericsson but you SUCK for web browsing and you DOUBLE SUCK for video recording quality.
I bought one Viewty, tried to make a phone call: blocked. Manager tested device; definitely blocked.
Second device: blocked
Third: blocked.
Unfortunately a man who turned up after me and immediately before I found out MY phone was blocked managed to obtain the ONLY ONE that WASN'T blocked. I cursed under my breath.
I now have £270 worth of CEX vouchers, valid for a year on any product. I wondered if perhaps someone could offer a suggestion of another handset besides the N95 8GB and Viewty which has....
A good browser
HSDPA
Decent camera with VGA movie recording
Those are my only requirements.
Please don't say the standard N95 - I gave the last one away to my fiance so don't wish to buy another.
Thank you

yes ive looked at that but it will be a long time before Cex have one of those for me to exchange my vouchers for.
Just out of interest, what is it that prevents the possibilty of hacking Vga 30fps capability into some of the newer windows mobile devices?
Is this capability entirely hardware driven?

I went for the N95. I know I had one and I know I gave it away to my fiance, but I kind of missed it....
I've just installed the very latest firmware and I'm super impressed. The camera shutter and processing speed is IMPRESSIVELY improved and therefore much more useful than it once was. There's updated maps software, 30% higher battery life and everything just seems great. To be honest I prefer the reassuring tactility of a keypad to touchscreen impact, and for £100 less than the Viewty I don't think I'm missing out on it.
I will say that on second impression I did really like the Viewty, and if it wasn't for a gang of insurance phone blocking scammers operating in derby I would be using one right now, but maybe it does pay to go back to your old club.
I bought a Nokia N800 yesterday on Ebay for no less than 100 quid. Now with the official upgrade release of OS2008 on this device and the fact that the N95 supports SAP, as does the N800 I'm hoping the two will work together and give me a multimedia combination to rock the Athena's socks off.

What to get after the HD?

I've got to say I love my HD. Almost everything about it... The big let down for me is the camera. I can get some fantastic shots out in the open during the day. But go inside and introduce people to shot and its a crock of ****. I've got the topaz cam cab installed but it makes little difference. Nearly all pictures of my kids come out blurry.
So, I've started looking around for what to get next. Sadly, at the moment, I dont seem to be able to find anything that comes close to my expectations. That Toshiba TG01 sounds good, but I hate the look of it. I like the look of the HTC Hero, but reviews let it down, saying its essentially a magic with a style upgrade.
What are other people considering after their Touch HD's?
The Omnia II looks like a great phone and would be the phone I would upgrade to, but since its not a HTC phone it gets no XDA support which could be a big blow (is for me). If your okay with that, I'd recommended the Omnia II.
It feels as if we have come to the end of the road whit the Blackstone,
yet there is nothing new at the horison.
The next thing I expect from a phone is multitouch, still only iPhone
has that to offer. Isnt that strange?
Basicly Id like a HTC Hero whit better hardware, multitouch and something new...
Read about nVidia haveing a new better chipset and prosessor.
When will that hit the market?
I agree with you KB, lack of XDA support is a big no no for me as well.
Ethania, pardon me being a newb, but what defines a multitouch device?
Which current HTC product has the best camera?
I'm looking for something with mindows mo/symbian, better camera with flash, no bigger than the touch hd and lots of programs to play with.
Currently looking at the Omnia 2, Omnia HD, N97/86 or waiting for HTC to make a phone with a decent camera. I played with a mates SE C905 yesterday and I could see myself going for the Omnia 2 or Omnia HD for the camera - miles better than anything on a HTC device.

I would say:
A device which tracks more than one point on the screen simultaniously.
How does that sound? Maybe Im forgetting some important technical term,
but for us mortals, I think this is enough
i wish id held out for an n97 having been a nokia man for years naturally i wanted a n97 but im on o2 and they dont want to sell it because here in the uk that's who you get an iphone with, so i got a touch hd and im deeply disappointed no 3d graphics, crap camera, no native networking/file sharing support, slow wifi transfer speeds, crap video playback, poor music player all things i could do out of the box without hasstle on my old 1st gen n95! not to mention its SLOW!!!
i shouldn't have to hack n mod my phone to make it work reasonably
touch hd for sale 2 months old good as new !!lol!!
sorry if im ranting just for my first winmob im not impressed

Hopefully the camera will be better in low light situs than the touch HDs cam.
The Leo looks effing brilliant
I like the Omnia 2 but couldn't stand the dangling stylus! Why can't they build it into the device!
I like the HTC design but is disappointed with its quality. My HD has to go back to service twice and the service centre is in another state so the turnaround is slow.
After sales service is important for me and I understand there is a Samsung walk-in service centre here in Sydney Australia.
The NEXT PHONE...
Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 (Rachael)...
Excellent Now I have two to choose from when they arrive, the X3 and the Leo
To be fair Ive always got on well with Sonys. The cameras are always tip top on them.
walkin service sounds like a winner - I like the fact that there are many SE ad Nokia centres around the UK but I'm yet to see a drop in HTC one - although their base is in Milton Keynes which is in the next county - still too far and too many annoying roundabouts!

The Zii isn't a phone though.
did a quick research and I think there are three or maybe 4 devices to wait for -- SE X2 , SE X3 , HTC Leo -- theyre all almost equal by spec except Leo has more ram (screen size doesnt count ) the fourth device (60% that Im wrong) could be the rumored HTC device with Nvidia chipset-- I have a big "I dont know or Im confused" about that device, cuz maybe its the Leo with the chipset!!!
BTW: what happened to those rumors about microsoft phone with tegra??
sorry - double post - some connection issues!

The upcoming Zune HD will use the Tegra chipset but, like the Zii that was linked-to on the previous page, it's just a media player.

Should i buy a Blackstone?

Hello to all
I want to buy a new pda, cause my Diamond is getting slow, but i don't know witch one to buy.
I like Blackstone but i don't know if it's fast with the new rom's and so, or after buying i will regret it.
I know there are new models and so but were i live they are too expensive, so i have to stik with the older ones
Please give me your feedback.
With the coming of windows mobile 7 and nvidia tegra chipset i predict huge technological leaps in the terms of ppcs by late 2010 so if you can wait a few months i believe you'll be rewarded...
As for blackstone, i wouldn't recommend it personally although i have one and currently love it. I'd save money to get something better by mid-late 2010. Time flies
The original ROM is quite fast, but not very advanced. If you install a custom rom a lot of new functions come availible and the speed stays the same. You can also go for nice eyecandy, but then you will end up with a littlebit less speed.
For you to decide....
the Diamond is alomst as fast or as slow as the blackstone.
so i do not recommend you to buy a HD.
I also had a Diamond and changed to Hd.
It has a bigger screen, that is all.
But this is only my opinion.
Good luck.

Buy HD2, em 12x sem juros.
+1 for the Touch HD2
If you're going for a Windows Mobile phone, that's the one to get.
The HD has the same CPU and RAM as many other HTC phones, the difference is the 3.8" screen (bigger than any other phone on the market except the HD2).
I use WM 6.1 (topix 3.1.2), I found WM 6.5 and Manilla 2.5 too heavy for this hardware. I do not benefit from a colourful and animation-intensive device if it's slow (like using XP vs Vista on a computer with 1 GB of RAM).

I think you are spot on there. I agree with what you say and even though I currently own a Touch HD, I would also love an Touch HD2, especially for the release of Windows 7 but the price is a big factor. I think it's wise to wait until later this year for the release of other PPC devices that will be competitors to the Touch HD2 and see what they are capable of offering. In my opinion, buying a Touch HD now at this point in time would be a step backwards.
Regards.
In my job I make full use of the 'pda' capability of my trusty Touch HD, and I have been a pda user since the very early 1990s. In terms of upgrading, you just need to ask yourself what you will be using it for! Had to hard reset my Touch HD recently and was very choosey about what software I put back on afterwards. I was really surprised how much faster it was. Easy to be seduced by the impressive HD2 but clearly 2010/11 is going to see some REAL reasons for upgrading from anything that does just about all you want now. Be patient and you are bound to feel your hard earned cash will have been well spent.
hmm, HD isnt much over the Diamond, its essentially the same device with a large display, its a wonderful phone and if you had asked me 6 months ago id say go for it but there is no point just now, too much around the corner later this year, at the very least if you cant afford a new PDA you will find the blackstone price drop and thus save you some cash.
dont get a HD especially on contract as the price between the HD and the HD is not significantly large to warranty bypassing the HD2.
Waiting, thats another discussion altogether, nobody really knows what is coming out and when but if u look at how the market works you will see only slighter better phones trickle out, you wont see major steps i believe. Even if a tegra phone coming out they will find some way to handicap it, perhaps reduced codec support or lack of TV out or something like that.
You really only have three choices I can see, 2 if you discount the nexus if you have concerns about android, Iphone or HD2, iphone if you are not a big tweak fan but you like everything to work well and fast, HD2 if you like speed but love to tweak, then again if you didnt you probably wouldnt be on XDA
The HD2 is ridiculously priced atm though unfortunately. Here's hoping to it dropping down fast into non-business user land.

If I have been given a chance to get a new phone, perhaps it would be the HD2 or the Nexus One (Android) the prices of these phones are just the same as my HD when I bought it last Nov 2008...but the hardware specs have been improved

If I have been given a chance to get a new phone, perhaps it would be the HD2 or the Nexus One (Android) the prices of these phones are just the same as my HD when I bought it last Nov 2008...but the hardware specs have been improved

Agreed, prices are the same as when the HD first came out if not cheaper in some places due to market competition being more fierce now then ever before.
If WM7 doesn't excite you then go Nexus.

HD2 Shall I Get?????

Afternoon all
I have been reading all the reviews about this amazing phone but have a small concern, I can upgrade/swap provider next month shall i get the HD2 or will someting better come out in say 3-5 months and do you think WM7 will come to the HD2??
No matter what you get, something better will always come along in a few months time. If you worry about that you'll never end up getting anything I'm afraid. I just got the HD2 yesterday on SIM free, having come from the iphone 3G. Have to say, overall I'm impressed with the HD2, probably not quite as polished as the iphone, but you can do a lot more with it. Think of it more in terms of a small laptop rather than a phone.
I've never had a windows mobile before, and I must admit it's taking some time to get my head around it and get things set up, but am getting there now I think. Certainly one of the hardest phones I used in terms of getting it set up right, but then there are so many features and settings. It'll be worth it in the end I'm sure. PLus the guys on here have been a HUGE help. Certainly the best and most useful phone and gadget forum I've been on. There's an answer for just about everything on here.
just buy it, its the best phone experiance i've ever had!

fully agree on this as well
HD2 does have some bugs but I've never seen a phone / device without bugs. Update to WM 7 has neither been approvid nor declined officially but fact is that from hardware specification is should be able to deal with WM 7.
You need to commit at some point - as usual along the whole life - so either you go for HD2 or you can wait for the next 3 - 5 month and get then your favourite device which will probabely be better than HD2 to some extent but be ensured that only some months after your purchasing you will be facing new devices better than the one you've got.
Cheers,
LEE
p.s after having this great peace of hardware/software for one month, I would go for that today again....
It's a great phone, there's nothing out there yet that I would swap this phone for.

Not strictly true. I contacted HTC directly who assured me that there will be a free update for windows mobile 7 on the HD2 when it is released. However, they did say that Windows mobile 7 will not be released until towards the end of 2010. Knowing how these things get delayed it'll be more likely early 2011 then
Thanks for all the quick answers my mind is made up will get one when my contract is up and moving to o2 UK
Just one more thing i have a diamond and the battery life if very bad if the HD2 any better i hope so cos can only use it as a mp3 player for about 3hrs then battery is dead

HTC HD2 or Nexus One?

I currently have an HTC HD2, Would it be worth selling that and buying a nexus one unlocked? Is it any better?
the text message lag is driving me mad on hd2!
u using the HD2 in america on edge or in europe?
im uk mate.. its an unlocked one on o2
i had been waiting for the hd2 to come to america for months now. saw the nexus one, and considered it for a bit. i took the leap on the N1, and am glad i did. i'm done with winmo for a while. android, at least on this phone, has it beat, hands down, imho
Ive never used android.. And i do like the htc hd2.. but its like freezing.. laggy..
and its stupid, that when you have more than 4 texts in a conversation it freezes
Might take a plunge on the N1.. mmm...
Is the text message lag when you type on the onscreen keyboard? Or is it just the messages themselves are slow to send? I ask because that was the main reason for my switch to the N1. The keyboard either the default or the HTC_IME have no delay that I notice.
*Edit: I switched from the Vogue to the N1.
Winmo + HTC suck.
Its unreal no matter how much horsepower they have theres still that kind of lag. Touch Pro lagged like mad...sad that TP2 and HD2 still do.
Na its not the keyboard as such, but you carnt press nothing when it lags..
Cus the hd2 tries to copy the iPhone text message conversation style, if youve got more than a few msgs it just lags.. and it takes longer and longer to reply..
ANDDD even with the cab edits off the site its so hard to type
I was talking to some guy at sprint and he said that winmo sucks balls because all they've been doing is patching the original OS that was released in 1998. He said that winmo 7 is the first OS that has been built from the ground up and it should be really good. I'd go with android either way though since that's whats hot right now.
i wish i could afford to buy a nexus then decide if i wanna keep htc hd2.. cus win 7 prolly will be good.. but to be honest.. its not coming anytime soon.
Does the n1 lag on texts? it is an htc afterall lol. What about music? Web browsing? Any good?

I have a HD2...
Brought a Nexus
HD2 up for sale!!
There is no comparison it's fast very easy to use excellent screen and you won't miss the HD2 one bit.
I have had iphone's galore, winmo phones going back years and this is by far the best phone I have ever owned.
No lag whatsoever from my experience, music playback is great (about 6gb of songs on mine with album art)
Web browsing is a good 2-3 seconds faster than my HD2 when both are on wireless for most sites.
Mmm i might go for it though.. Seems a shame to sell htc hd2 but it hasnt gripped me like i thought it would..
Like they say you really have to see something in person and play with it for a while before you can really decide. New years eve was the worst, several texts resulted in me removing the battery twice
Thankyou Dale, I see your northampton.. pretty local
Where did you buy yours? I saw one on ebay for 470.. That a good price? How much should i list htc for? No marks on it.. I still have box etc

I put my HD2 on the market place here for £399 as I checked ebay and the prices vary between £375 to £435 + shipping.
But you also have to pay those ebay fee's so you can knock off a good 17%-20%
I got my HD2 from device wire for about £499 I think.
listed on ebay for 399. Gonna order a nexus when i find a good seller.
Lol how does this go syncing with a mac? Getting music on there etc.. I do have windows upstairs if needed..

Define soon. It's due out this year.
If WinMo7 is anything like the OS on my Zune HD it will be really slick.
(Zune HD OS is based on WinCE afaik, so it's a little dated as well)
I was actually disappointed that the Zune HD was not also a phone. My wife hates Android, but loves the Zune HD I got her for Christmas....
I heard November 2010 at the very earliest...
I think the nexus one looks really nice, never used android though!
I hope theres a multitouch update...
HTC HD2 / Nexus One
I have both of these phones. I am running a custom Rom on my HTC the RC1 of Xanny's rom. I have no more txt lag like I experienced on earlier roms where you could not type till it loaded up and it was extremely frustrating. The HTC HD2 has its bugs but it's a beautiful device. The screen is simply unreal and the casing and build quality are excellent in my opinion. HTC Sense if you like it is very cool and asthetically the HTC HD2 is a much better phone. I do however like the smaller footprint of the Nexus one, great screen, fast, more apps to download off the phone directly. Android is a great platform and the phone is good quality. I can't decide which one I like better as they both have great features. I had an Iphone forever right up to the Iphone 3GS and all i use it for now is music. I also have a BB 9700 which i use only for Blackberry Messenger. I'd say you can't really go wrong, better roms are just around the corner for the HTC HD2 so it's only gonna improve.
Maybe i should keep both.. but i carnt carry three phones.. I have an iphone 3gs too lol
