Honestly, I have not had ANY issues with this phone. I am Stock, not (or ever have been) rooted on this phone. No issues.
If you plan to root, then best to wait for others to answer.

only issues you are going to run into is with custom roms, with it either not having it supported yet or you run into the problem of the mms being blurry. Which in any case can easily be fixed by changing the carrier in the mms settings

new ota details?

Besides wifi calling, tethering and the like; what else will be included in the ota? I heard about some bug fixes, but which ones specifically will be addressed? Also, any chance we will get a new radio and kernel? Finally, who thinks this ota will open the door to root access?
Thanks!

To my knowledge from what I saw the bug fixes include the random freeze/crash and also improved network connectivity and radio recovery.

My fingers are crossed that the logs will give the devs the key they need to figure out how the phone goes read-only.
Will this also fix the issues people have been having with unlocking their phone?

Hello!

Hello everyone, I just recently got an HTC Aria and it is my first Android phone. A friend recommended I come here and see how I can make my Aria "better" so what do you guys recommend.
I've read a lot of the posts on here and it seems that I should root my phone, but as I stated previously I'm really new to all this so can you guys help me out and give me some tips.
Thanks!

Tips:
1. Read, study and reread, especially the STICKY threads that usually contain Q&A information for new users.
2. Forum Search and Google will also be your friend.
3. If you do have questions, posting in this "General" section is the best place to start.

What it says above is a great way to start. I just got an Aria too and for me the first thing I wanted to do was to get rid of the AT&T crapware off the phone. After rooting, which is super easy compared to how it was a few years back, then you can just search for what you want to do. I am new to Android but have been on this forum for years and it's the best place for anything you want to do to your phone to make it "better" Now I'm trying to add 3rd party apps that are not in the market, this gets a bit involved, but the info is here. I have installed different ROM's on other phones before, but don't really care to do that with the Aria yet, but it is definitely an easy way to get the Aria upgraded to Android 2.2 and get rid of the crapware and AT&T's limitations that they put on their phones at the same time.
Everyone here is super helpful as long as you read first and ask questions later. Cheers!

Thanks! I'm a total noob with everything though, I get really confused with this stuff. So far I think I've seen two different methods for rooting the Aria can you guys tell me which is the best one? So far all I've done with my Aria is get swype on it :3
Here's the two different ways I've seen,

and

There may be more I'm not sure, but which one is the better guide? Or are both basically the same.

IMO the second one has more concise instructions for noob. They both document using the Unrevoked 3.2 tool which makes rooting the Aria pretty painless.

Install HTC Sync so that the usb drivers get installed.
After you get rooted, I suggest you reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery mode and do a 'nandroid' backup. Do a search and you'll find more info about how to do that.

That's purely opinion. The good news is we only have a few to choose from, but they are very good roms. If you like the stock look/feel if the aria then one of the two liberated roms would be a good choice. One is based on android 2.1 with sense ui (came stock on the aria) and the other is based on android 2.2 with sense ui. Then theres cm6.1, which is based on android 2.2 but without the sense ui. All are good choices and very well developed. Try em all and see what you like. Ask those roms receive very good user support.
I personally started on liberated (i was hesitant to give up sense), but I eventually tried cm6 and once I adjusted I've never looked back.

I too agree with the post before mine, that it's all a matter of opinion. If you want mine, since you call yourself such a noob, I'd try one of the liberated rom's that have sense ui which is what you're used to. Then try cm6.1 at a later time once you're comfortable with your skills, it's very customizable and as mentioned before, well developed, with a large helpful community. Good luck. Btw, rom's are in the Development section.

I'm having troubles with both of them, not installing or running them or anything like that , but problems with my network. The liberated constantly drops the signal and the cm6.1 doesnt allow me to send or receive picture messages, do you know if theres a way to get back to just the default rom the aria came with. Maybe I'll just root then and not install any other ROMS

Htc website had the stock aria rom. As far as the picture messages go remember that you have to have your data turned on to send or receive pic messages. But you should definitely be able to do it I'm on cm6.1 and I'm able to send and receive.

best AOSP

Been looking for a full functional AOSP to flash to my new galaxy s
Really want to wait to cyanogen but i'm too impatient.
Seen a few really nice ones out but most have disfunctional gps, wifi, or data...
can anyone suggest a good AOSP??
There are no true AOSP ROMs for the Vibrant yet... My personal favorite is Vibrant Hybrid R4 from Eugene. Link is in my signature.
Also, questions belong in the General section, not in the Development section
EDIT: I guess Eugene took the OP down but link to his site is here:
http://eb-productions.net84.net/vibrant-2.1-aosp-clone.htm
There is the AOSPish Froyo v1.1 or Hybrid the one just said or Heathens sXe v1.4 its froyo and it is really nice. The last one I said is new.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
The reason i ask is
In canada, we seem to get all the OS updates 1000000 years after everyone else. Just flashed an "unofficial" copy of FROYO, didn't like it too much. in fact, bricked my phone, had to get me some resistors out
just want a decent clean galaxy.
I'll try the versions suggested in previous posts though
thanks for the info!!!

Yeah, waiting about for cm 6.1 thats actually for the vibrant has been taking forever, eh? Hopefully they will have an official froyo update soon, then a source drop like they did last time all these updates came in quick succession with ji4, 5, and 6.

For some reason-which I do believe was explained earlier in the thread- "flight mode" is enabled upon flashing this ROM. You have to reset it to "data network mode."
This is done by holding down the power button then selecting to turn off flight mode. I then select data network mode. Usually I follow this with a reboot, and when it starts, data has resumed.

In Canada, the Vibrant isn't really the Vibrant. It's the i9000 basically. Use i9000 firmware, or better yet Canada-Vibrant firmware.

Yes, it's still possible to root the EVO. Check out the link below for more info. As far as not liking Sense-based ROM's, you can always go the AOSP route.

Without knowing what software version you're on, the first part of your question is hard to answer. As for the second question, what may be the best ROM for one user may not be the best for another, so it's up to you to decide which ROM works best by trying a few out.

Thanks for the reply FinZ28. How can I check my software version? As far as the best ROM I meant generally speaking the top 3 most popular?
Go to Menu>Settings>About phone to find your software version. As far as "most popular", I can't really help you there. There are too many choices and I haven't flashed a ROM on a OG EVO in awhile.

If you have a hardware issue with the device, the software on it is irrelevant. And Sprint services rooted devices.
Thanks for the heads up Cap. BTW is it possible to make service/3g better on this phone? I feel like when I was using ASOP Rom the service was a lot better...At times my text messages dont go thru, I seem to get drop calls more often, & things just feel a lot slower on this stock sense rom that came with the phone..
Cap what ROM are you using?
Is it possible for 3g to be worse using stock sprint sense rom vs an ASOP rom ? I remeber when I had ASOP rom my 3g would hardly lag compared to now its constantly lagging...

I just flashed Evervolv KitKat on my OG. More accurately I just restored it. Before that I was running Omni, but I have to do some work on that to get data working. I think I might need to borrow ril from Evervolv.
AOSP is slimmer than Sense, so the device will typically run faster with it. But I cant imagine signal is actually better, since the stock stuff is built specifically for the device.
Well Im not sure about that. When using AOSP my 3g hardly ever stopped working when I was at the gym. Now it stops at least 5 times...Does everything work on Evervolv KitKat Rom cant seem to find it on the forums? Im trying to find a ROM where all things are working well & is very fast.

i just brought my og evo out of retirement after my wife lost her iphone 5.
i figure this can tide her over until we decide what to do...change carriers, what phones to get, etc...

also, will i be tied to sense only roms?

Yeah it's unfortunate but no devs have found interest in beefing up stock ROMs for the Axon 7. They're all AOSP based and ported which I've learned a long time ago will never support WiFi Calling. I've had to run plain stock rooted since owning the phone and never had the chance to try out all the good stuff that's available now.
But yeah as of now I think the outdated BadBoyz ROM is the closest anybody will get to a custom stock ROM and have WiFi Calling.

Same! The Axon 7 has an awesome Dev community which I'm thankful for seeing, but the lack of stock ROMs leaves us WiFi Calling fanatics out of luck. If I knew anything about dev'ing ROMs I'd jump right into that shizz haha.
@raystef66 could you look into porting some of those old ROMs' modifications? I have no idea how easy or hard that would be, but maybe with the APKs it would be enough

It depends on the carrier but also if its implemented onto the rom. U models have it and works on TMO. Perhaps AT&T too. But as other carriers provide it too and having a G version i just wondered. But you wrote to me it could only be an extra apk for wfc ? If so ill dig up your rom and look for it. Perhaps ill find a way.
Digging up an old thread so I don't post a duplicate.
Does anyone know if ROM creators have been able to get Wifi Calling working yet? My phone is driving me nuts with random slowdown and hanging. I know I can just wipe it and start fresh, but if I'm going to wipe the phone I want to move up to Oreo.

Does anyone know if ROM creators have been able to get Wifi Calling working yet? My phone is driving me nuts with random slowdown and hanging. I know I can just wipe it and start fresh, but if I'm going to wipe the phone I want to move up to Oreo.

Unfortunately most, if not all custom ROM's for the Axon 7 are still AOSP based and don't include WiFi Calling. The most recent Lineage 15.1 has the option for it under settings, but nobody, not even the dev, have answered if it truly works or not yet. It's like anything regarding WiFi Calling gets ignored.
Your best bet is to download NFound's release of the Oreo B12 Beta which is perfectly stable and will offer everything stock has like Dolby, and more importantly WiFi Calling.
