help with rooting and custom rom - Vega General

Im new to rooting and dont have a clue where to start. Can anyone provide a step by step walk through of how to root and what apps are needed to do it.
Cheers
Ash

My Vega came with the 1.09 firmware, to root, I just downloaded z4root (had to Google for it), then installed it using the built in file manager and ran it... job done, Vega rooted

Ive managed to do that but dont know how to installl a custom rom

Every custom ROM thread has installation instructions. Follow them to the letter and it should go all smooth.

Rooting FRF85B

Hello,
Right now I have the stock FRF85B build on my nexus one. I want su and superuser, nothing else. I have already unlocked the bootloader. What do I do from here.?I do not want to install custom ROMs at this point.
Go to erasethis.net/wordpress I wrote an entry today similar to what you want includes links

That's great - but didn't you start with a custom recovery?
Can you drop a custom recovery on a stock recovery for FRF85B without the right Superboot?
I ask, because I am also stuck with this stock build and recovery. And when I read the instructions for installing Amon_RA, one of the prerequisites is Superboot. The problem is that there is no Superboot for this build yet.
HALP! I feel like I'm stuck in a chicken-and-egg scenario.
Ah I forgot that part. Wrote that up while at work. Inthe last section there is a link to the page where lox posts an update.zip for root access. I opened the zip and extracted the boot.img and flashed that I think, then I flashed the recovery for amon-ra.
After that is when I put the update.zip from lox on and flashed his update.zip for root access with the such utility.
The method posted in the dev section works perfectly. Root without unlocking. Then you can install a custom recovery/rom if you want.

I second this post. I am in the EXACT same situation as the original poster and I'm frankly embarrassed that I can't figure out what to do next.
If we're making huge requests, can you write it up for mac users? There is a surprising lack of documentation for us. I hope this doesn't open me up to a flamewar - if it counts for anything I've been lustily eying windows 7..
edit: I'm an idiot and had not googled the right question. If you run a mac, and have the bootloader unlocked already please see this link:
http://theonda.org/articles/2010/03...-performance-boost-and-some-serious-geek-cred
use your brains to suss out the relevant directions, make sure you have a more updated version of ROM Manager or RA or whatever custom recovery you want and basically just ignore the stuff about custom radios etc. You're basically just using the terminal (or whatever windows / linux does) to flash the custom firmware back on.
Again if you have the bootloader already unlocked (icon appears on startup), just find generic directions for your OS on how to install custom recovery. On the mac, it's simply few terminal commands using the fastboot program linked off the page linked above.
Sorry I can't be of more help - i have to be up early and it's pushing midnight.

Removing CWM

Hi,
I recently rooted my phone using the brilliant kernel in this post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
I need to unroot my device now to return it. I have read up on unrooting, and I just need to remove the superuser and busybox etc.
CWM is also included in the kernel, I really need to remove this aswell. I have done a bit of reading but just want to confirm how I do it.
Apparently because it was included in a kernel I just need to flash over another kernel to remove it. Previously my phone was running xxJVO, has any one got a link to the kernel I need?
In all honesty I just need to remove the CWM and tweak apps from the app draw, the person will never check past that - is there an easier way?
Thanks
I'm afraid the only way to remove root and CWM is to reflash the stock rom.
So follow this tutorial
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-install-xxjvo-android-2-3-3-gingerbread-rom-on-your-galaxy-s/
So flash xxjvo without bootloaders - is this correct? This will remove root and cwm?
Thanks for your reply!
Dan
Just a quick question the tutorials I have found say different things.
Should re-partition be ticked if I want to go back to the stock XXJVO from a rooted and CWM XXJVO?
Can i confirm I dont need bootloaders?
Thanks!

[Q] Can't Enter Recovery Mode to do anything

Hi,
I need a little help as I am a complete noob and have just crash landed into the world of Rooted Roms.
I recently rooted my stock 4.0.3 ICS rom for my Iconia tab A500, using blackthund3r_ICS_Root_6.0. It worked brilliantly as far as I can tell. The Superuser function is there and I even deleted some of the annoying stock games that are on the stock ROM.
As the next step, I installed the Acer Recovery
However, I am interested in trying a leaner custom ROM in order to improve the performance of my tab, so I downloaded the Acer Recovery Installer from the Play store. I chose the Recovery version CWM rev1.7 by thor2002ro (for ICS Bootloader) and clicked on the install Recovery Image.
When I clicked on the Reboot into recovery mode because I wanted to back up my ROM and eventually install a leaner faster ROM, I got the following error message:
Booting recovery kernel image
Recovery verified failed ...
Anyone have any suggestions to help me out?
Thanks in advance for your help and putting up with my Noobish ways!!!!

sounds like your rooted correctly if u cud install the recovery file, but u should use thors cwm 1.7.3 to flash roms because it supports aroma installer which the newer roms use. did u get message from acer RI saying recovery installed?
u can find cwm 1.7.3 by thor here .
just put the zip from that link on ur sd card
if u can get into the recovery you installed.
choose install zip from sd in your cwm menus and select the zip.
let it finish then reboot.
viola! you have updated your recovery and shud be able to make the backup u need.
it is what i used.
if u cant get into recovery yet try turning off your tab
power it on and hold the volume down button.( the volume rocker side closest to the power button)
hold them to u see the white righting in the upper right corner of your acer screen
if u get in, update.
if u still cant get into recovery. try one of those other recoveries
try to install thors cwm 1.7.3 zip from there.
if u like i cud point u to some roms ive tried, since we have the same tab. happy to help.
Hi shadowmikeshadow;41918411
I will give it a go and tell you if it worked. Thanks for your advice. After all I could use all the help I can get. I am totally new and clueless to this whole rooting thing. I've only had my tablet for about 9 months and I got tired of all the lags and thought it was time to root and get rid of all the bloatware.
I really appreciate all the support you profis out there are offering. In general this whole site is GREAT!!!!!
np man im happy to help. well get u goin for sure
also couldnt hurt to double check your root with root checker(free app) could be making ur AcerRI not work correctly
and if u still cant get it to work and u are rooted correct theres still more we can do. its just more complex so try those first..
Do I have to do anything with this Recovery zip file that you suggested. I put it on my SD card and rebooted in Recovery mode and I still get the same error.
Please keep in mind I am complete Noob at this.
Thanks.
So if u can't get any recovery working install that zip via adb.
u can download this so u won't need android sdk.
follow all the instructions on the platformer page.
If everything went OK and adb sees your device
Follow this guide for adb here
but use the recovery from the zip in earlier reply.
Still desperate

Hi Everyone,
As of posting this original thread above I am still stuck in limbo. I have read, read, and read and am more confused then ever.
There are so many suggestions out there and I dont know what to do.
My problem is this: I have no way to enter the recovery mode to do anything (flash a new ROM or Stock)
If someone out there has the time and patience to help me and can talk me through step by step how to fix this problem, it would be highly appreciated.
Thanks for your understanding and support.

[Q] How to install OTA on rooted device.

Hope you can help me here. I have searched around not finding exactly what I need of info.
I have a rooted I9505 (using This method)
I have not installed any custom recovery. Just rooted european non-branded device.
I would like to have installed the new OTA update, but obviously my device will not let me do that.
How can I unroot or install this update without wiping my device?
Would need step by step instructions to make sure I do everything correctly.
Any help would be appreciated.
