LCD screens do not work well in sunlight. That is just how it is. If you need that, you need to look for devices that have Pixel Qi screens. As for skipping, I have not seen that on mine.
EDIT: You can help reduce glare by getting a good screen protector. You can also manually adjust the screen brightness. But overall, LCD's are not good in sunlight.
Nobody cares! Stop making the same threads over and over!!

I think you returning this is a good idea, for what you want to do you could get a hi-def video camera. Just be sure to read reviews first!!!!
Yes please return it. If you thought you would get a brilliant LCD screen in sunlight, you did not do your research.
Have all the internet tech idiots come to this forums in the last week or what. 90% of what people whine about on here in reference to the Xoom are typical current day tech limitations. What is wrong with people? If they all think the grass is greener in Apples lawn go for it.
I miss when XDA had chill posters who actually had a clue. Looks like those days are gone.
I've never seen so much early adopter buyers remorse in my entire life. It wasn't even this bad for the Nexus One which was awesome but not quite as solid as this device is out the door.

*sigh* this is what happens when sites that are not aimed at techies link to these forums. You get people complaining about the current state of technologies as if it is the fault of the product maker for using those technologies instead of waiting until new technologies are developed.
This particular user wants a Kindle that takes video. Wish I could be there to see the look on his face when he encounters the same problem with his new iTampon2.

I remember when I used to come here in the Windows 6.5 days and wonder wtf was going on. I felt like an idiot. Then I functionally figured out that stuff and then android came out.
Installing that on my HTC Touch was another bout of mystery.
Now I feel like i'm an android expert (i'm not) with all these posts in here. I think people aren't used to what these forums are really for.
Probably there's no good Xoom forum out their besides this, and I think this is first in Google's search results, thus we get the above...

I don't see myself using a tablet in direct sunlight so I see no issue. If there's that much sun... I'd rather enjoy it.

On my ipad I got an antiglare screen that worked ok. I just ordered one of these to try:
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I have an anti-glare screen protector for my ipad, but I wasn't impressed. Still has a lot of glare but my xoom seems worse so maybe it does work. A friend of mine just picked up screen protectors from the Apple store for his iphone and these look great. It is like a matte finish, doesn't pickup finger prints and really cuts back on the glare.
The company seems only to make products for Apple devices. However, I'm waiting for Boxwave screen protectors that, from the description, seem similar. They won't ship for another week so I'll comment when I get them.
I read on the bus going into NYC, the windows are tinted but when the sun is coming in, you know it - bright and hot. Anyway, I was actually surprised the screen was very readable and I keep the brightness on the lowest lever. I don't know, for me, the screen is very bright especially when I'm reading at night, my eyes are bleeding after 15 minutes.

I just got my TF today and I'm loving every bit of it especially with the keyboard dock. When I first turned on my TF I notice the light bleed I guess it's pretty noticiable but I really don't wanna go through all the stress of returning or What if's...My question is does the light bleed expand or could it cause any issue to the hardware??? If not than I could live with it...
No it will stay as it is now, no harm will be done and it won't get worse. I have some on mine, I'm sure everybody does to some extent but I'm not bothered by it enough to return it either especially because everything else seems fine.

Assuming the OP searched beforehand, I wouldn't hold it against him for posting what he did. Cut the guy some slack and if you have a problem with it, just dont reply. I'm certain of it, I mentioned in another post a while back and someone else replied that they were in the same situation. I'd handled it with kid gloves, no knocks or drops and I didn't have a dock to slot it into, so that couldn't have been a possible cause either.
I believe a lot of people saying "I didn't have any" but then report seeing it a day or so after purchase is a trick of the light.
For the first 12 hours I had my Transformer at the office, I was happy I had no bleed even on full brightness & a dark background (it was the first thing I checked) - Yey for me.
Soon as I got home and was out of a very well lit office and back under home lighting I could see 2 bleed spots quite obvious on the device (one on the bottom, one of the left - landscape).
Back in the office next day. Can't see them no matter how I look.
There's a little in mine, it's not expanding at all in a month or so. Only ever noticeable on boot...and that's about it.
I tend to not watch the credits in film at 100% brightness anyhow, so it's not like I ever notice it.
If I wanted to experience pure darkness, I'd lock myself in a basement and turn off the lights.

The purpose of this thread (like 40 percent of other posters) is just to post some negative crap on this forum.
It didn't occure to them to post in the other 'let make it up as we go along light bleed' thread.
The 'i've heard that there were issues, but haven't really got one' thread.
The 'i'm a jealous GTab fanboy owner, and i get very upset when i still see waiting lists mentioned for the Transformer, so i thought i would come over here and post crap' thread.

No! i've had two myself, and know of three others, none of them have any light bleed or build quality issues.
I don't see any other forums loaded with negative crap, i haven't seen any reviews that mention it, and if it's so bad like people on here try to make out how come there hasn't been a recall? why aren't any of these issues mentioned on the android rss feeds? if every single transformer has an issue why have there been no enquires by the likes of ipad fanboys over at engadget? they'd love a knock Android story like this! if only that had some facts/samples to back it up with.
People on here try and make out like they've all got it, where it's more likely it's a couple of dodgy ones have got through quality control, (Asus of course do have it, unlike what people on here would like to have us believe).
At a guess (and this is purely a guess) I'd say most people never notice this under normal lighting conditions. A lot of people don't notice the juddering in video playback for instance. Even when I showed them a video and pointed it out to them most found it hard to see what I was seeing.
You cannot generalize on these things. It's only people who are really anal who tend to make a big deal of this stuff. Visit any AV forum for instance and you will get a hardcore few like myself going on about stuff like floating blacks on Panasonic plasma HDTV's etc
Most people are not enthusiasts however and happily use their devices without even realizing they have a problem.
But I will add this. It is us few anal individuals who make a fuss that ensure products are improved upon and quality control remains high. So everyone benefits in the end.
Just a note: Contrary to most of this thread, light bleed can get worse. However, only if the device is also exhibiting the "creaking" defect. A loose build can result in more obvious light bleed. Applying a lot of pressure (abnormal amounts!) can also make the bleed worse if the Transformer isn't properly sealed.

Good grief! Just because you haven't seen the faults or quality issues, doesn't mean that they don't exist and it doesn't mean that others are just talking negative crap as you put it!
Why hasn't there been a recall? I suspect that it's more cost effective for Asus, to wait and hear from those that aren't prepared to put with the quality issues, rather than issue a blanket recall which would be costly and would likely attract negative press. RMA is the simplest for them.
BTW, I'm not having a go at you and I'm genuinely glad that you haven't had problems with your TF's, but please don't try and make out that some of us are just making this up.

Eh. I see the same "negative crap" on other forums, as well. The Hardforum topic on the Transformer is also full of people with issues.
The simple fact is quality control on the device is horrid... but good devices are out there.
There are numerous samples. I have two defective devices in my room, right now, waiting for me to ship them back to Asus. One is a keyboard dock that the tablet will not duck flushly with, and the other is a Transformer with horrendous backlight bleed, dust under the screen, and a stuck pixel.
On the other hand, my friend owns a Transformer and has no problems whatsoever. I've messed around with his device and it's near flawless -- very, very minimal bleed, not visible during usual use, and no screen problems. Balanced speakers, no dust, etc, etc.
It's a damn good device. Asus did a good job with the concept and the end result is usually extremely nice. Usually.
Don't think this has been posted, but apparently this danish site got a "close-to-final" retail sample and has put up and unboxing + review of it.
It's danish, but everyone can see the unboxing.

Must admit, I had the same feeling after watching that and sticking to my HOX. I'm not gonna cancel my pre-order though, I'm sure I'll love it when it comes.
I'm of the opposite opinion. It's looking better as I see it being handled more and more by reviewers. A big issue with phones this size is usability with one hand. Contrary to the specs it seems the Samsung may actually be narrower than the One X, and the rounded profile will give better reach. I like my One X very much. It's built stunningly well and feels very good in the hand, but even with my good sized guy hands I can just barely reach the ends of the screen as well as the hard buttons at the bottom without repositioning my hand.
The strengths and weaknesses of these two phones complement each other so well that there's nothing between them overall net. (The One XL has none of the problems the One X does since they have different chipsets and screens). Thankfully that glossy battery cover of the SIII can be changed. It's my biggest issue with this phone. If physical usability in the hand of one is much better than the other it will be the trump imo. I think I will return my One X and wait till the SIII releases. Maybe I'll end up getting another One X, but considering how different these two phones are and considering I'm in this for two years (contract) I want to be sure I'm getting the right one.
How funny they've made a magnetic cover for it like what the iPad 2 has.
That blue colour just looks better and better the more I see it. So glad my pre order of the white version cancelled itself lol

Very frustrating, but a problem with all manufacturers. I was unable to get an Ipad 2 because every one I tested had bad light leak (at least 4 units). The BB playbook had dust, dirt or bad pixil on my first 3 units. My first tab 2 had a spec of dust. The second appears perfect, but I'm determined not to run tests until I find something!

Just looked at my screen, and there isn't any dirt under it. Don't remember seeing any dirt or dust under the screen at any display models that I've seen in stores either, so that makes 4 - 7" and 3 - 10" tablets that I've looked at without any screen issues (besides just needing wiped off).

Just bought a tab 2 10" for the wifes birthday - no dust/dirt problems here, she loves it.
Terry
I agree with the dust problem. I have seen this problem on iphone 3gs, iphone 4, ipad 1, ipad 2, galaxy tab p1000, tab 7.7, and many other models...
It is really hard to find a device without dust. Latest screen technology get rides of the backlight bleeding problem, specially the super amoled screen, but the problem is that the dust gets inside between the touch panel and the screen during the manufacture process, so you won't be able to avoid it...
It is a shame that such an expensive piece of hardware gets that problem just because they don't care when they are manufacturing the pieces... :S
I have returned dozens of devices because of this fault... I don't understand why people return devices with dead pixels but not with dust under the screen... the visual effect is the same or even worse with dust!
Its just a tablet not a scalpel, just a mass produced product. You're lucky you don't see any Chinese dung beetles under the glass. Lol.

This device does not cost over $400.
That said, mine is perfect. No dirt, nothing.
I'm just grateful mine didn't come with any dirt. And to back the OP, if I spend anywhere near $400 then I want to see some quality. Less than perfect usually won't cut it, not if I am shelling out that kinda money. I want to get the best bang for my buck... I have seen this complaint in other forums and if I got a tablet and it had dust under the screen, I would certainly return it for another as well, not settle for a device that has a flaw, especially knowing some people are buying them without this flaw...

Is it even worth it? I mean with most of the people suffering from screen lifting, creaking, screen cracking easily washed out screen, screen flicker, dead pixels, screen burn-in/ghosting, LAG etc even with the replacements, seem to take the fun out of the tablet. I heard the replacements work for a few days and then start displaying the same issues.
What do ya'll think and suggest? Is the C8O the one to get or does that also have the same problems with it?
At this price point this is a steal but would still want an enjoyable tablet without the annoying problems.
Yeah, it's worth it - at least the 8 GB one is. I got it mainly to play with though. I have a XYBoard that I use for work. The issues are irritating, but it's not like I'm losing productivity. When I get home I put down the tool (XYBoard) and pick up the toy (N7)

Most people have a nexus 7 that is fine. A lot of people on xda like to complain about small problems; however, they are a miniscule minority compared to the number of tablets that had to have been sold at this point. It does make these forums pretty boring imo. Mine has been fine since buying it at Gamestop the first day they sold it.

Maybe I'm one of the lucky few, but I haven't had any of the aforementioned problems. I am 100% happy with the N7 I received. I know it seems discouraging that a lot of people are having problems, but it's a great tablet.
The people suffering from LAG issues have there internal storage pretty full. From what I've heard it starts when you have 1-2gbs free space, I've never gone below 9gbs of free space.
I really love it but in really hate having to find one that doesn't have issues. Just got a replacement today and the same issue and is older than its a c60k but the one I had was the c80. If you can find one that has everything in check its awesome but these little defect are ridiculous. Asus did a terrible job with quality control. Not that every company doesn't but this is too damn widespread.

Had mine since the first shipment and have not seen any issues. Most likely it is just a few people that have any problems. Most of us got what they wanted and are very happy with it.Sure you see a lot of threads but it probably is not really that many people with issues since the same ones post of all them. I am sure google sold a lot more units than the few where we read about having issues.
You have to remember that complaints are like spilled oil.......doesn't take much to look like a real big mess!!!
I preordered mine from the Play Store. Had it rooted about 10 minutes out of the box and I haven't had one single defect!!! And I do believe that I am the rule rather than the exception. Keep in mind that Google is expected to sell five to six million of these things by the end of the year. And that's a lot of 7's!!
No problems with my 16gb C6O. Bought it last month. Use it every day!
Bought mine from a retail store 2days ago, in love with it even though its fairly new. Its an amazing device, its fast as hell, faster than my iPad 3. I also bought a one year warranty that covers pretty much anything for a year for just 50$. I would recommend anybody to do the same if they can, that way there's nothing to worry about.

Not to be a dink, but couldn't you read one of the dozen or so other "should I get this/is it worth it" threads?

Trust me alot of people make a mountain out of a mole hill when it comes to the N7. Its a great device don't let the people with OCD keep you from getting a fantastic device. As far as the creaking, its made of plastic kinda expected, colors being washed out? Compared to a amoled display, yes its washed out but you can't expect them to use a top notch display and keep the price @ $200.

So the screen is supposed to be lifted and make ripples when I press on it? And the screen becomes unresponsive when it gets hot? These aren't mountains? Or its just me being to picky... the lag part is people being picky... people pointing out physical damage and defects are not being picky.

veryy worth it
The nexus 7 is a very popular device that is being looked at thru a nano microscope. There are issues in some of the devices. But we see way more I love my nexus we see lots of support ..
I myself have a 8 gb with the screen lift issue. The reason i have not replaced it yet is because i had a 16 gb version delivered last week . Not 20 minutes after opening the box in my hand the screen crushed under my thumb. These things will happen to any device. The issue is how the company deals with these issues. I have noticed some Questionable i broke my my screen just broke threads. Really read them and you can kinda see the legit ones. This is a tough call for the Manufacture But we will hope they do the right thing..
SO YES ITS A AWESOME Device with questionable very questionable Quality Control.by a KNOWN 3RD Rate build partner..
If you buy one and have trouble REPORT IT quickly and get it replaces. When its said and done i bet there will be very small return numbers in comparison to the number of the devices sold...
Got mine Monday. I'm in love. Playing some Crash Team Racing for ps1 at a steady 60 fps.

First off dude did I say I was talking to you directly? Did I say everybody was making a big deal out of everything?? No I didn't. Im aware that some people do in act have issues. But when you have people who want the screen to look as good as a iPads, complain about the slightest amount of light bleed, get mad when a plastic device makes the slightest bit of noise when squeezed then that my friend is making a big deal out of something small. Its a $200 tablet. Try to find a tablet that offers more at that price point...

All these issues are real enough. And I confess that I've kinda focused on them and let the issues bother me more than they should. But then I decided to just use the tablet, I even stopped reading this forum for a while and I'm really enjoying it and don't really notice the problems much anymore.
Yes, I have screen lift on the left side. While most of the bezel has a very tiny lip around the glass, on the left side the glass is just a hair higher than the bezel. I wish it wasn't that way, but it's easy enough to forget that defect is there if I'm not being reminded of it daily on this forum.
I've already tried a couple RMAs and have pretty much had the same issues with every replacement I've gotten. Except creaky bezel, haven't had that on any of my Nexus 7s, so I'm hopeful that's a rare issue that you won't encounter.
As for the washed out screen. There are two things going on here. Firstly playing many videos will cause the screen to look very washed out or over saturated while and after the video (though the video itself looks great). This goes away quickly on it's own after the video has stopped. If you are rooted there are automatic scripts you can install to disable the "smartdimmer" behavior causing the problem, which I have done. The other issue is the colors do look a bit washed out all the time. This is much more subtle and if you didn't have another tablet or phone to compare with you might not even notice it. I'm hoping Google can can fix this, but I'm growing doubtful that they will if they haven't by now. But I can live with the slightly washed out colors and the "smartdimmer" video issue is easy to fix ourselves with root access.
I don't think there is any screen burn in issue. I think some people mistake the ghosting for it. With the smartdimmer disabled I really don't notice the ghosting anymore. I think it's still there to a small degree, but minor.
I've not experience lag with any of my Nexus 7 tablets. With the exception of Chrome, seems like it should be performing better, it does very well in benchmarks. Not sure what the issue is, but the lag really isn't that terrible. While I find Dolphin much faster, I still use Chrome because I like the synchronization with my desktop and I still find it plenty fast for my needs anyway.
It's definitely not the best looking screen. But getting a pure Nexus experience and at only $250, I'm very impressed and pleased with my purchase. And this tablet is light and feels really good in my hand. So it more than makes up for the multitude of minor issues I've had with all of mine.

Apparently I wrote that with an angry tone. What I was trying to point out is there is quite a number of people complaining about defects and that is what he is reading about. And when you say "oh its people making a mountain out of a mound hole" that is not true. I didn't mean to make it sound like I was pissed.

Yes, it's absolutely worth it - pending you buy an extended/accidental warranty. I baby my devices, but that didn't stop my Nexus 7 screen from randomly breaking. Now I'm dealing with headaches from ASUS in an attempt to get it fixed. At this point, I don't see how you can purchase the Nexus 7 WITHOUT that sort of warranty.

Randomly breaking?
I have had I think like 5 RMAs all with different things wrong.. My last one SEEMED perfect but it overheated a lot then suddenly developed a really loud creaking of the frame, so I asked for another and now this one is sooo close to perfect but it has minor minor screen lifting on the left, nothing like it was on the earlier ones, just barely, doesn't move much, do you think it will get worse over time or should I just stick with it cause it's mostly fine ? If the screen lift stays as it is then whatever it's not that bad and I plan on getting a new phone soon anyways so I won't be on my tablet 100% of the time, but if the screen lift worsens then it's unacceptable.. What do you guys think? Did anyone with minor screen lift notice it get worse? I might just try the opening the back to fix it myself at this point.

I would just keep this almost perfect one. I'm in the same situation as you. I RMA'd until I got a nearly perfect N7 with no flaw other than minor screen lift. Mine hasn't gotten worse and it's been over a month now.

Well that's promising then, yeah it's not even really bad right now it barely moves just a little high.. And assuming the next nexus isn't made my asus.. I will be getting it so that should offset anything wrong with my N7 Speaking of which though, does anyone remember any manufacturing defects with the samsung galaxy nexus ? Was it bad like this or can we hope for a smooth nexus release and this was just a fluke?

Its a pathetic $200, dude. Not to mention its built in the third world.
Keep the one you have and start using the dam thing. Geez!
After 5 RMA's Google should cancel all affiliation with you and tell you never to use ANY of their products EVER again.
na, if Google and Asus would of got it right the first time OP would not have to rma so much.
op, how long have you had your screen lift? has it stayed the same? I have had my nexus about a week. and have screen lift still deciding what to do

I just got my 6th Nexus today and I feel the same as you. It has screen lift, stuck pixels, back cover doesn't sit right, backlight bleed, and it has a big LCD mura smudge in the top left corner.
Part of me wants to just give up and get a refund but it would be such a great device if there weren't any faults. I have concluded that none of them are faultless however; many posters here reckon theirs are fault free but I have yet to see one. If you have had 5 RMAs it's only because you, like me, are someone who notices the faults and isn't in denial about them.
Every one of them (but for the smallest percentage) has screen lift to some degree. I'm sure other, more capable manufacturers will be releasing properly built tablets in the very near future though so keep that in mind. You should probably also consider the possibility that the screen lift and the design flaw that causes it will potentially cause other more serious defects to appear like a cracked screen for example.
If the N7 had a direct competitor, there's no way I would buy the Nexus with all the faults it has but as yet, it's the best 7 inch out there all things considered. Won't be difficult for other manufacturers to beat though, just make a tablet with same specs and no faults.
In all honesty if you can't live with the screen lift I would get a refund and wait for something better to come along. You're very unlikely to get one without some sort of fault.
Often people just receive other peoples faulty trade ins. So it might only be 1-2 defective units if that was the case.

I don't think this makes any sense, can you explain?
I would have given up after the second unit did not satisfy me.I am glad my first one works very well.
A case that covers the bezel takes car of any of those "slight screen lift" problems very well as I suspect it is just cosmetic in nature.jmo
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Albert Einstein
Just saying.
But to answer your question....yes. You will never be satisfied with this device because of your experience, either real or perceived you will always be looking for a flaw. Better to move on with another device that better meets your expectations.
Whatever you decide, good luck.
There is no perfect tablet out there and all of them have something that is going to irritate someone. Get a refund and spend double on the "perfect Ipad" which has no flaws....ever(sarcasm). Again, nothing is perfect in the technology world.

That seems a bit extreme.. I use the thing a lot, I love the device itself, I use it with 6+ hours of screen on time every day, I was just wondering if I was extremely unlucky.. This is the best one so far, my last one i thought was the best one but it became really loose after awhile...

Yeah I'm more annoyed with asus's factories and maybe also google for not monitoring the whole process..
I've had screen lift since the day I opened this one, but like I said it's not bad, it's like just barely reaching the silver part of the bezel, nothing like the original ones where it was above the bezel

If this weren't a nexus device, I would have given up on it after the second RMA, hands down, but now the pros pretty much outweigh the cons, if my tablet stays in the condition it is for the forseeable future (until the next nexus tablet? haha) then I have no problem keeping it, despite the existing flaws. Also I'm considering the fact that when they eventually announce the next nexus phone that I will be picking it up pretty much right away, right now I have an older phone (htc desire Z) so I use my tablet like all the time when I'd be using my phone otherwise, even for texting often haha, so when I get a good phone I suspect it will offset my N7 usage and I won't care as much

Yeah I need to get a case.. I just have a sleeve right now, I need to figure out which case is best and what I want it for.. I want something that doesn't add much bulk, and maybe one that can be a stand.. I saw one that was a rotating stand so you could set it up in both landscape and portrait and that one seemed cool cause most right now only show landscape :/

Douchebag alert ^
First we (consumers) are spending our hard earned cash on this tablet whether its $200 or $2000. We shouldn't have to settle for a half assed put together product. Their quality sucks period and isn't acceptable. They need six sigma and six S present in their factories. I should be able to RMA till the dumb f#%@s get it right. This is my last Asus product.…
I don't think its demanding at all to expect a product that's not defective right out of the box brand new. If you are within the time period of exchange I don't see why you shouldn't take it back if you aren't happy with what you paid for. It took me 6 exchanges with GameStop to finally get one I'm happy with, that hasn't had an issue out of the box or pop up after a week. If you get a good one this tablet is worth it, at least to me, its essentially a 7" version of my phone which is why I didn't give up looking for a good one. Asus should have better QC in place so I shouldn't have to. I also had the Prime so I can tell you it stinks

I dont wish to read all the posts, but my last one had a minor screen lift that I did not notice for 2 days, but I sent it back because we payed for a tablet that doesnt have a screen lift, thats what it comes down to, not to mention any lift does compromise the glass. My second one is perfect.
A TPU case will provide protection and overhang the lip a little so you don't see any lift.
OR
TRY THE WASHER METHOD by making a few little plastic screw tabs. Pulled mine in nice and tight and it's now solid. I had real bad lift too and the bevel was also bowed on the side. Now everything is nice and straight. Great for a 5 minute fix.
As far as returns, returning something 5 times expecting different results is retarded (IMO). It is a manufacture defect where the screws are too long. They "solve" this by simply removing the screws (which is retarded too). So technically your aren't going to get a perfect device because they are all made that way. Sure there are some that don't have this (my first one) but chances are your going to have this on each one. So just fix it yourself. Big deal. It's easy and faster and BETTER then Asus' fix.
Dead Pixels or popped speakers or something that legitimately hinders your usage... yea exchange that sucker. A little screen lift isn't going to do anything.
I have not had any issues with mine at all, it is an August build. ASUS products have been good to me though. MY TF101 was also good. The power button was and does feel flimsy on that one though.
5 RMA's makes me think someone is looking at this with a magnifying glass and TRYING to find a reason to complain.
