A friend of mine and myself got into a bit of a disagreement last night over bestbuy etfs. Long story short he got a phone from bb cancelled the service and kept the phone. Will bb come after him with a etf?
I know sprint didn't charge him a etf but will bb come after him for a etf! I made a $75 bet with him that bb would come after him with a seperate etf. But he showed me his receipt/contract paperwork and other than the info about sprint etf, there's NOTHING that states anything about bb etfs. And he paid with cash so its not like bb can just charge his credit card. I searched google and everything and really didnt find any info on this. I know companies like wirefly, letstalk etc charge their own etf if you cancel service and don't return the device. Which they even indicate when you go through their application process and is also indicated in their paperwork.
So my question is, am I out of $75? Did I just lose this bet against this fool...lol? If someone have any insight into this, it'll help me out a lot. I'd love to show him some post that bb is going to come after him. So let me know what you all think.

I believe you lost yourself 75 bucks .... as far as I can remember when you purchase an item from a store that authorized to sale the item you are only under contract with the item provider.
Bestbuy typically give you instant rebates at the register because they send their rebates directly to the manufacturers and not the provider. Hence it is no lost to them only the provider who takes the hit

Wow..are you serious. I kinda thought that I may lose the bet because there was nothing mentioned in the paperwork about a bb etf and if it was I didn't find it. I thought bb was just like wirefly and letstalk.com when it comes to cancelling service. But like I said sprint cancelled the service with no questions asked. Oh well...if I lose, I'll pay up...lol.

from my knowledge you don't sign a contract with BB, just sprint
Are you your friend's personal accountant or money manager? I mean even if he gets an ETF all he has to do is say he didn't and collect your money lol

Sorry dude but as an employee of bb mobile I can tell you that you just lost $75. An etf is strictly through the carrier. After the contract is signed we have no part in it.

ETF
If anything he will get a Sprint etf. It wont show up for a month or 2 as was the case when I switched From At&t. Best buy is in the cell phone business, not the carrier business which subsidizes the cost of the phone so they cannot charge an etf
Clarify the bet with him because I'm sure Sprint didn't give him a hassle about canceling but he will get a separate bill from Sprint for the remainder of his contract. Around $200 for early cancellation.
You said he paid cash. did he pay the whole amount or contract price, and did he cancel in the first 30 days? Not sure if BB does does the same but the store I got mine from told me if I canceled without returning the phone they would charge me an additional $250 for it.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Not sure how Best Buy works, but I know that where I work, if you sign a contract and cancel, and DON'T bring the phone back to us, we charge a portion of the total cost.. I can't remember the amount, but that's how we do it..
Well what he did was call sprint and cancelled the service. Sprint didn't hassle him because he's well within his 30 days so they cancelled it with no questions asked. They said that he wouldn't be charge any SPRINT etf. However, he will have to pay for what he used prior to cancelling the service.
I am over his house watching the football game right now and had a chance to look at the paperwork again. And I just don't see anything that indicates a bb etf. Everything I see is in regards to sprint etf, that's it. I just thought that bb is like wirefly and letstalk. That is you have to return the device within a certain time frame if you cancel service or you'll be charged their etf. But I'm starting to think that's not the case.
Plus when I bought the Nexus S and tried to cancel my service with T-mobile, I tried to cancel my service like 3 days after I got the phone and I had to go to bb so that they can give tmobile some code that informs them that I returned the device. Sprint doesn't have a system like that. Which I know because I bought an Epic from Radioshack like 2 months ago and I returned it like 2 weeks later. However, before I took it back to radioshack, I called sprint to cancel the line that the Epic was on and they cancelled it with no questions asked again. Radioshack gave me my money back and I went to Sprint and bought me a brand new Evo for full price, I believe $500.
Oh well, I'll be paying $75 this Friday. thanks everyone for all your responses.

He paid contract price. But even if they told him about a possible bb etf if he were to cancel service and not return the device, its not indicated anywhere in the paperwork. They gave him copies of everything he signed and and not one indicates a bb etf.

This is an interesting scenario, especially if the device was paid for by cash.
Although the receipt has his sprint info, I don't think BB can go after sprint to collect anything, as they are an authorized third party seller in this case.
Now, there is this clause on the receipt under SERVICE AND SERVICE OPTIONS
....Thank you for purchasing your sprint phone and service at Best Buy. If you wish to change or cancel your Service please return with your phone to a best buy store.
As stated previously, BB is not in the carrier business, they are merely a third party reseller of sprint products. Also, nowhere on the receipt is anything else stipulated regarding cancellation of service and potential fees that may be charged [by best buy].
So, this may very well fall through the cracks.
Btw, some other resellers such as amazon and wirefly do have clauses that say if you cancel service within 180 days, you will be charged additional etf's outside of what the carrier may charge you.
ymmv.

I believe Sprint will send a bill, and if he does not pay they will lock the ESN.
I can't speak for Best Buy since I've never worked there but I know Radioshack (and CompUSA before they went out of business) charge their own etfs if the service was cancelled within 90 days without the device being returned. At CompUSA you would get a separate paper contract about this additional etf. At Radioshack you get an electronic contract that shows up on the Verifone credit card device that requires the customer to read and sign that mentions this separate etf. I'm not sure if this is also mentioned on the receipt or not, I've never actually read it.

This is something Sprint has recently changed. Anytime a new account (within 30 days) is going to cancelled, the phone must be returned to the original point of purchase, meaning if he purchased it at BB, Sprint will not cancel the service, Best Buy has to contact NSS and have them process the 30-day cancellation. In your particular instance, if someone at Sprint cancelled them, he got lucky. In normal instances, your friend would not be allowed to cancel over the phone, meaning if he kept the phone past 30 days he'd be under contract with Sprint and then your friend would be charged $200 ETF if he chose to cancel or keep receiving Sprint bills until his account was disconnected and sent to collections.
Your friend, was really lucky to have spoken with a new hire that mistakingly cancelled the account (or line).
So i am not up for upgrade until march 2012 but i decided to check and see what the OTD price was thru att for the atrix on my account. I pulled it up, and oddly enough it showed 199!
I went through the checkout process, but it wouldnt fully process the final checkout because i have unlimited data and i wouldnt pick a new data plan. Instead, i printed out my cart showing the final price of 199 + tax and took it into our local ATT store.
Talked to the manager there and he said he'd grandfather my data plan in, AND honor the price given on the website! so i'm getting my atrix tuesday morning for 199 even tho i just used my upgrade for my captivate in july!
SO STOKED!
How did you manage to get it for that price online? I'm in the same boat as you, I upgraded to my captivate in august and i'm not due for upgrade until 2012
If this is true, can you provide a few more details? I would also love to give this a shot.
Holy cow. Is there any way this is possible if you aren't a current AT&T customer? Lol

When they pay $500 for a phone it doesn't make sense for them to sell it for $200 without contract. It would never be able to happen in my store and my manager is extrememely lenient.

Wtf.........
Well, luckily with AT&T no phone of mine has ever really been "on a contract"... When I called the cancellation dept to preorder my Atrix....errr.... "switch to Verizon or Sprint".... They told me if I stayed, they'd cancel the last 10 months of my contract if i signed a new 2 year contract...and they gave me the Atrix for $174.99 with free overnight and no upgrade fee.... This is the same trick I pulled when I upgraded my phone last time 1 year into my 2 year contract! In other words, their "contract" is really BS if you talk to the right person in the cancellation dept who will keep throwing it out the window to keep you as a customer.

Nice!! Ive never tried that thinking they might go ahead and just cancel my service instead of giving me what I really want lol
Don't worry about having that happen. The goal of their "cancellation dept" is to do just the opposite. It should be named the "retention dept"! The first thing the guy told me on the phone (which was kinda cheesy) was "I'm superman and I have superpowers to keep you a satisfied AT&T customer!" And he did indeed have the superpower to throw my existing contract out the window and alter the presale price of the Atrix. Just call up, act dissatisfied with your current phone...ask how much your termination fee is...point out that it's cheaper for you to switch carriers than pay full price for the phone... then you're on your way to a new cheap phone! :-D

honestly all i did was log into my account on ATT, click the line i wanted to upgrade, and picked the atrix. it showed 199 instead of 499 even though my page said 'i am eligible to take advantage of their no commitment pricing until 2012'
i just noticed right now when i tried logging back into my ATT account i got this message:

so maybe it was a fluke or something? but i had printed out the confirmation pricing page and stuff and they are going to match it at the store since i wanted to keep my unlimited data package.
im sorry i cant provide more details, i dont really know how i managed this i'm just sharing my excitement
when i'm able to get back into my ATT account ill post screen captures
i ordered mine on the website out of contract, have my receipts showing the 199 price, lol. it was a flaw in the preorder website for the phone,it was because of the dock price, a att rep just reported to me. they called me and told me they would be canceling my order and redoing it at the full price,as it was an error, i told them to cancel my contract while they were at it,if they weren't going to honor a price i agreed to pay, they then agreed to let me buy the phones at the 199.99 price

I did almost the same thing. I bought the inspire for 99 on a new service contract. I then went online 3 days later to see what the price of the atrix would be without contract. When I got to check out it was $199. The phone is now in the hands of fedex for delivery tomorrow.
The AT&T site has been down since some time last night! Maybe they are trying to fix this "glitch" lol!!

still got a copy of that printout?
Same here. Bought a Captivate back in July '10, iPhone 4 in Nov '10, my line (the Captivate) was only ~7 months into my current 2 year contract.
Last Wed (the 16th) went through the normal process, added the phone as an "upgrade" for me, went in the cart for $199, changed (again, right online) from the $30 Unlimited Data to $30 Unlimited Data w/ HSPA+
I *suspect* this was simply an early upgrade allowance (plus pre-order discount), and I'll be into a brand new 2 year contract.
Phone is on the FedEx truck due to be delivered today (in the next hour or so).
I realize that you are not getting a subsidized tablet here (if you pay full retail) but I was wondering if the month to month will still ding your credit and will they require a "deposit" to complete the activation process.
This is my only worry and I have yet to see anyone ask that so if anyone is familiar please let me know.
[edit] Well after calling around 5 Verizon Wireless stores I have come to the consensus that if you have bad credit and no existing phone line through Verizon that you will more then likely have to pay some sort of deposit for the month to month activation. They quoted me prices of $120-$400 for deposit if you have bad credit.
I was under the impression that the month to month plans didn't require any sort of credit check. I'm not willing to give that kind of information for something that I intend to immediately cancel within minutes. This is going to be interesting to see what happens.
Sent from my EVO using XDA App
From the information I was able to get they will ding your credit even just for month to month just to make the Verizon account, one representative even told me that you will get billed for the month and activation fee and will not be able to pre pay. That really sucks for some of us. I still plan on getting one but this brings up more expense on a already expensive purchase.
You may want to call were you plan on purchasing it and asking.
i will let you know what happens as i have bad credit also. i ordered through wirefly and they have to authorize a credit check through verizon. That will probably start today or tomorrow. If i pass then im sure you will too.
What if you plan to pay for the Xoom and all data fees through Debit? They can't possibly NEED your credit, I don't even own a credit card!

They still do. It's crap but they do. I suppose because they are risking you using minutes/data before any bill comes to you since they are a post-paid service. That is the problem, even with month-to-month data plans its post-paid. That way, instead of cutting you off like they should if you go over your data allotment, they can start racking up the charges.
I am on hold right now with Verizon, I am going to see if I can get the credit check done ahead of time like I did when I bought the HTC EVO. The guy just said there is no credit check on unsubsidized, but after I asked if you he was sure for the third time he had a revelation, said "oh ****, hold on". I am now holding on to see.
And so you know, even without credit card you still have a credit score .
EDIT: Yes there is a credit check if you buy unsubsidized. He said they have some "new conditions" or something new and that I would be "pleasantly surprised". Unfortunately, unlike Sprint, they have no pre-qualification. I am now calling Best Buy and hoping they will do it for me. I refuse to show up to pick up a 800$ tablet only to be told I have to pay between 100$ and 400$ for 1 month of a data plan I DON'T WANT.
I have been fine up to this point, but I am now getting ready to throttle someone.

Hopefully you don't need a 750 score to buy an overpriced device with a $20 one month plan.
Well if it's of any relief there is a Wirefly Video of this up showing the activation process and the ability to skip it entirely to use WiFi only!!!! It's at the end of the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieK1tWYZWGI
I still think they are going to require activation, I hope that this allows for some wiggle room though.

It's all bull anyway. With sprint.. for the evo.. I had to do like 5 credit checks, it was weird it kept not saving. Each credit check said congratulations.. 150$ security deposit. For no apparent reason, the last time when I actually was calling to activate I was approved with NO security deposit. I wanted to say huh.. but I just kept quite and sure enough, my bill didn't have a security deposit on it . If they want a security deposit, I will demand a discount equal to the security deposit + a subsidy .
Having to pay a security deposit on 20$ worth of data.. frakkin toasters.

Depends on how many times you tried in a short amount of time.
Retailers are by law only allowed to send one credit check hit in a certain duration.
Systems I have worked on just finally balks at repeated requests during said time frame and will let the user on through with a flag for a rep to check up on it later - beats a lawsuit for ruining someone's credit further.
My 2 cents worth anyhow..
I am irritated by this whole process. You can't even addit to your existing VZ account. They are unnecessarily running a credit check. In this day and age you have to limit how many times your records are accessed.
All that being said, when I worked for Verizon landline, the credit check was to make sure you were who you said you were and that you didn't owe them money.
I will be curios as to how you make out. Has there been any feedback from people who have bought other tabs?
For those worried about a credit check and you have bad credit, I just passed mine so I dont think you guys have anything to worry about.
Just stopped into a Best buy and a manager told me that the $799 xoom would not require a credit check. I guess YMMV

Xoom coming to sprint tomorrow still $599. I don't know if I am just easy out of the loop on this or what and a google search told me nothing. I'm a girl btw, and I was told by the Sprint collections department that you do not have to pay it off in full the next billing cycle, that there is no time limit as long as they see you are paying on it, so we will see.
EDIT TO ADD: I was told that I had no limit on my account, not sure if that has anything to do with it. I know Sprint implements "spending limits" to some customers and some have no limit, so not sure if this has anything to do with it.
Too bad they don't have a 3/4G version available. Would love to add it to my unlimited plan.

That's the most insane thing I've heard in a while. I've never heard of anyone doing this. So you're going to float your bill and pay fees and other penalties until you can afford to pay it off? If you have even a slightly good credit rating you could get a $600 credit card with 0% for a year probably...
i added a couple of mobile phones several years ago to my account--not at the same time but one was one year and then a year later or so..
anyway, i paid the mobile handset off across 2 billing cycles at least (phone was like 600 ish then) and had no fees or extra costs.
the main thing was paying your wireless bill on time.
home girl's case may be solid and unique to her case so i am inclined to believe her based on my past experience.
you must not have any limits or ASL on your account and be in good standing with no past due balance. im sure you may know this...
From what I was told purchasing "equipment" doesn't incur fees, only your service bill does. I will still pay my service bill on time but the equipment I charged will be paid off in payments. After searching online I too am seeing conflicting information regarding this, so now I'm slightly leary. Worst case scenario I will be sending it back if what I was told was false.
Yeah I've been with Sprint for like 7 years since I was in high school. I don't have a spending limit on my account and pay my bill in full every month and never had one late payment. I don't like to bill to my account but to each is own.
I prefer to just pay it in full just be to be on safe side of things. Good luck with your purchase though but just make sure you call to verify the payment plan options because it's harder to get things fixed when they are screwed up.
I'm only saying to call because every time I call Sprint I get conflicting information and nobody seems to know what they are doing. Also if you want to check your Sprint Credit Worthiness log into your Sprint account then delete the address bar and replace it with this:
javascript:function getYesNo(s){if(s=='Y') {return 'Yes';}else{return 'No';}};alert("Your Hidden Stats:\n\nSprint Financial Value: "+loyaltyAccVal+" of 10 (higher is better)\nCredit Class: "+creditClass+"\nAccount Spending Limit: "+getYesNo(aslFlag)+"\nHotlined Account: "+getYesNo(hotlineFlag));
and hit enter. A box will pop up and that will show you. I believe it would be correlated to the results if they will allow you to bill to your account.
Mines shows:
Sprint Financial Value: 7 out of 10
Credit Class: G1
Account Spending Limit: No
Hotlined: No
Well I've gotten conflicting info when calling. When I speak to sales they have no idea and put me on hold to find out and then tell me it has to be paid in full after speaking with the "collections department", when I spoke to someone in billing I was told that it doesn't have to be paid in full and many customers have "made payments" on purchases billed to their account. I would love to pay for it in full but I can't shell out $600 at once so that's why this option appealed to me, if it turns out that's not the case as I stated before I will give them hell and worst case scenario return the equipment.
Yeah just looking out for you. I always call multiple times and ask for a manager because there are a bunch of nifnards working for Sprint.

LOL isn't that the truth! Its going to really piss me off if that's not how it works for my account as I was really looking forward to getting the Xoom and accessories I ordered. I hate calling there because I can never get a straight answer about anything, and the order is already out for delivery so too late to cancel if that's true, I will truly give them hell if I was given false information.
there is no pay plan. they give you about 2 bill cycles which is plenty. if you need more time, make sure you are showing good faith--by paying your wireless bill and also paid a good portion of yourequipment--this gives you good favor with the account rep and they may be more inclined to help.
we all want to pay our balances off at once--however sprint extends this as a courtesy to their good customers. if you know you can afford the device you can maximize your purchasing power in a short time period.
I did call accounting services again to confirm my initial answer towards this. I was told there is no official "payment plan" per say, however they do not "require" you to pay the equipment off the following billing cycle. He did mention as long as you are paying your cell bill and making payments towards the balance there should be no problems, however he recommended that its paid off in a "timely manner". So yep, basically what the poster above me said. We shall see...
Just called in to request a port. I must've gotten the best csr on the planet. She was very polite and nice. Took care of my port request quickly. I then questioned about my huge ass first bill. She proceeded to credit me $70 activation fee plus fixed a couple other erroneous charges. Bill dropped from $181 down to $101. I'm very pleased and impressed with Tmobile so far. Came from vzw, those jerks were rude and disrespectful.

What did you say about the bill?
Try calling them to see if they will give you the unlock code for your phone.
I know a family member got 3 T-Mobile phones and they gave him emails of all three phones with unlock code and instructions when contacting customer service.
How the hell did you do that? Lol

T-Mobile is is usually pretty good with that stuff. Most of the time the cs is tops.
I had a simalar experience. Had to fight verizon for them to cancel my line. Tmobile has been great!

Thats noting. I got ATT to drop my bill from $209 to $114. Threaten them to cancel and they will cave in
Ill have 3 lines at 35 each for activation. Verizon only charges 35 on primary maybe I'll use that as an argument

You have to have the phone on the account for so many days or prove that you paid outright for it. Then they can go through once you meet all the requirements.
Yes, T-Mo Customer Service is outstanding. You don't need to threaten to leave them for them to take action. Sure there are probably a few bad ones scattered around here and there but you can't blame them for that. After all, we're only human.
My friend called twice yesterday to see if he can extend his contract now 4 months early so that he can buy an S3 and both people said no. I found that quite lame, has anyone been able to extend their contracts early?

I think it really comes down to the area, and who you get a hold of. Its the exact opposite over here. My buddy is always fighting with Tmobile, and Verizon jumps at every chance to help me.

It also depends on how you reach out. My experience with AT&T has been that customer service is beyond terrible if you call in, but the employees at the corporate retail stores are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Yes but I was only a few weeks early. 4 months is a long time for a full upgrade so you really can't blame them for that. They will give him an early upgrade but that's about it for now.

I wish the VZW was like that here. All the local stores treat me like I'm wasting their time unless I'm buying something. If I have an issue I just call in now. It really pissed them off when I had the guy on the phone FWD my early upgrade to the store so I could pick it up same day( after the store denied my early upgrade and said it wasn't possible). The guy at the counter threw the phone on the counter and walked away.

My personal dealings with Tmobile CSR have been stellar. They work with you like a human instead of a number.
One time I was trying to save dollars on my phone bill so I was looking around their website. I ended up disabling my family plan's text messages. Got a bill a month later for 600+, I freaked out.. and called. The lady explained how it was binding to the contract when making online changes. Long story short she understood, reset my plan like nothing happened and asked me to watch my clicks
Then I moved to an area with less than strong 4G. Reception and data was spotty anywhere in my new home. I was really considering moving to a different company. I called and they sent me a free signal repeater. I've had better service ever since.
Where their service may be rocky they treat us well. In a society where it's all about product we forget that service is part of the product.

Verizon is terrible at CS until you get to the higher ups. I had a EnV Touch before my current X2 andvi went through 8 phones and they refused to offer me something else when 7 of them were software problem's. My X2 is another hyped up ****ty phone unless you run a rom. A mass Exodus happened on this phone starting with release of GNex. Most everyone filed a BBB complaint and after getting good customer support they let me upgrade early in April almost 11 months after phones release. I know now to go to the nice people at their HQ rather then at the store. Complete idiots work their at mine.
My full upgrade isnt due until September, but they just said on the phone, I can get the S3 for 279 with rebate but the phone is back ordered!
