Funky Screen - Atrix 4G General

I'm sure most of you have noticed the off coloration of the yellows on the screen. What I want to know is, is this a hardware or software problem? If its hardware I'm going to return this phone and wait for the sII, even though I have no idea when or even if it will come to att. If its software, I'll wait until an update.

I think it's how the screen is supposed to be. The colors aren't as vibrant as amoled but they won't hurt your eyes.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

The yellows look greenish/dark mustardy. I had an iphone 3gs before and I had fruit ninja and angry birds. I'm not trying to base my comments purely off games, but I'm pretty sure the iphone had a regular screen and the yellows looked like yellows.
In fact, the other day I was playing angry birds and a friend was looking over my shoulder. When he saw the bird that was supposed to be yellow he asked me what the "greenish" bird was for.

Screen not as sharp as it should be...

I can see pixels...clearly...even l looks jagged...and I'm typing while laying on my belly, and I wear glasses but I can still see them...onmy hero it wasn't so easy to see the pixels, but then again, it might just be that I expected pixels to standout on the hero screen so it didn't bother me as much.
But still, these SAMOLED's aren't as good as they're hyped upto be...
Well, no. I lied. The screens are brilliant, but just a lil short of expectations. I.e. the fact that my white seems tan unless brightness is up past 50% (although the screen is still very bright even at 0, its just an annoying tint :[ )and it doesn't seem to me that the blacks are indeed pixels that are turned off...but then again, my eyes are silly.

yeah, i'm not sure if everyone can see it unless you really look. I had to point it out to my gf, then she noticed it.
Hah guys, you don't even have to really look for it. It's just more evident at times than other times. It's constantly, CONSTANTLY, mentioned and its a draw back of the SAMOLED displays. It's normal, just like the over saturated colors. The display is beautiful when viewing media, other times it can be an issue, or more of an annoyance for some. You don't have to look hard, you don't need a "microscope" as someone mentioned, it's there. Anyone can see it.
Some folks want to act like their Evo is perfect, some want to running their Epic is perfect. Sadly, either, are not. It's not just the Epic, it's the display. It's a fact. A known fact.

Yeah, the "screendoor effect" is a issue that comes with Super Amoled screens.
But to be honest, I've never noticed or cared about it. Yes, if I look VERY closely I can see the pixely effect, but is it a problem? No. Do I even notice it on a daily basis? No.
The pure brilliance of the super amoled completely over weighs the downfalls in my opinion. Putting the Epic next to the Evo, the screen murders the Evos washed out LCD screen. I prefer super amoled even to the Iphone4s retina display.
But I've seen lots of people whine about how bad the pixels are on the s.amoled. And if you can't deal with it, the Epic isn't the phone for you, since its not something that can be changed easily.
I used the Voodoo screen fix, which DOES improve the level of visible pixelation, and smooths it out a great deal, but the screen is so horribly yellow at 0% that I can't use it.

So whats the big deal? Just get a different phone and your problems are fine

I hope this is a joke...
Anyway, the screendoor effect of this screen combined with the lower number of subpixels steered me away at first. The Evo is much better for sharpness/accuracy, but the novelty of OLED is hard to beat. I ordered an Epic anyway, had to have the processor.
The way i look at it, it all comes down to preference.
There is no perfect technology for these little (or larger)panels yet.
It is almost like comparing Plasmas to LED LCD's, one has advantages and disavantages over the other. (ex: screen burn in, refresh rate, or contrast ratio over brightness)
On android handsets I myself prefer AMOLED for its vibrant colors(but not so accurate), excellent blacks levels and all around even viewing angles.
Now when looking at all current technologies i would say that Apple takes the cake.
The iPhone 4 has a fantastic LCD w/ IPS screen, but the trade off is that it is only available on the iPhone, and it is only offered at a 3.5" inch size.
The pixel density on the retina display is unmatched at that size, and i would take a 4'' inch LCD w/ IPS + higher pixel density + gorilla glass over SAMOLED any day. I would recommend you walk into a store and compare the Epic with iPhone 4 side by side, and you will see what i mean.
Just my .2 cents.

Not in terms of deep blacks or contrast, AMOLED also has the EDGE on the colors.
But yeah, the iPhone screen is gorgeous and as i said before, i would take that technology over AMOLED, at least till it is a bit more refined.

Yes, true, size is better ... obviously. But colors? Sometimes the SAMOLED display looks fake. I'm over my past apple phase but yes, the display is truer in every sense of the word. Not saying you, specifically, but you all act like your Epic is perfect when fact, it has more flaws than the Evo. At times that screen is gorgeous, but through and through and in the long run I would still take the Evo display over the Epic's.
The Epic, as with the all SGS devices, is not close to the hype people give em. Not only the devices ...but the screen as well.

I chose the Epic over the Evo mainly for 3 things:
Camera, GPU and overall performance, as the Evo stinks on those 3 areas.
Other than that i would have chose the the Evo, i don't care too much for the AMOLED as long as the LCD is of decent quality and calibrated properly.
A selling point which is the hardware keyboard is almost useless to me, and it is not used 90% of the time.
I also see what you mean about colors looking fake at times, but i think some of that could be fixed if the display is calibrated properly.
I still think AMOLED has the potential to show deeper blacks than LCD's but i guess i could be wrong since i am not an expert in the subject, just a personal observation.
You see a penis?
Hey, its a fact about the screen. I just find it funny when I browse the Epic section and see people busting a nut over their phone. They act like its better than the Evo. Only category it trumps it is in the GPU category. And for the non gamers, read ; majority, that isnt important. The screen gets too much love too, which I thought was the point here. Somethig I noticed immediately and am amazed every Epic owner hasn't noticed at some point. If not week 1.
And trying to rationalize the lack of 2.2, which I've seen a lot around here, is a sad state to find yourselves in.
The latter has nothing to do with the OP or the matter at hand ... but it fits you all quite well.

Terms of a camera, if you're a serious shooter you don't use your phone ... you have a legit shooter. We know ratings don't mean much and yes, your camera is better ... marginally. Way some talk I'd think it was leagues ahead of the Evo's ... which it isn't.

UI performance all around is laggy on the Evo (i have used both side by side) and that is even running on Froyo 2.2.
Camera performance on both photo and video quality mode are a pathetic joke as well, the Camera on the Epic is much more usable.
This illustrates my point well, check it out:

I used to think that way until i saw some of these:

I would say the Epic is a pretty good replacement for casual photo taking.
Gonna assume you didnt see the double post, which I'm ashamed of. Phone cameras are good for shooting silly pictures of anything from your baby puking on himself or your drunk friend passed out with his junk out.
If camera quality is so important to anyone they have a shooter. I have admitted, and will forever admit you have the better cam quality between the two phones. Doesn't mean anything though, to be honest, for the majority.

EVO 3D: Pentile Display or Not?

This is a determining factor for me in whether or not I'd invest on the Evo 3D. Some articles list it as a drawback from AMOLED screens, and I'm hoping isn't something present in all qHD screens. If you don't know what I mean, here's a link:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4165/the-motorola-atrix-4g-preview/4
Apparently, it has 2 subpixels, rather than the usual 3, which lead to poor color reproduction, etc. It is supposed to help with battery drain, but at what cost is it worthwhile? Some Atrix owners are pretty upset and feel 'cheated' on this qHD gimmick. What do you guys think?
ive seen plenty of pentile screens and generally dont notice unless im reading a lot of text or i have the screen really bright, if i stare at it its obvious but generally watching videos it doesnt bother me unless its a really bright vivid color scheme like in The Fall where the colors contrast and pop out, im thinking that if i get the 3d i will be using it so much at first pentile is all i will see after awhile
Bringing this info into my idiot's guide.
The EVO 3d supposedly used slcd (super pcs) so it shouldn't have that problem.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I'm very curious about this as well. I'm kind of on the fence on getting the EVO 3D, but if it turns out it's a pentile I'll likely wait. Hoping it's a super lcd, anything less would be ****ty on HTC's part.
Unless the specs are gonna change, Sprint says it'll have a qHD screen. Either way, it doesn't matter to me. I'm getting it.
http://now.sprint.com/evo3d/?ECID=vanity:evo3d
There's the link. Just click "View full specs."
qHD is just the resolution, it doesn't have anything to do with the type of screen it has.
With that pixel density, I'm sure you'll never notice a difference unless you're DIRECTLY comparing it to an iphone4. According to all those numbers, the EVOs screen is pretty lame. But I look at my screen every day and find it to be quite lovely. In a year or so, when way better stuff is out, maybe not so (I used to think the iphone 3gs screen was BEAUTIFUL, now it looks like **** to me). But I seriously doubt that the 2 year life of phones nowadays would be too long for me to put up with a pentile screen.
Having said that, I'll never get the EVO 3D or any other device with 3D attached to it. I truly don't care about 3D. And the kickstand is just way too dope to give up now
The other thread for evo 3d linked to a site that said the screen is slcd ...

SLCD Screen Burn-In

I know AMOLED has burn in issues if you decide to leave one thing on the screen for a very long time, but I'm speaking of my SLCD DInc. I've noticed it for a while. It's never permanent, but is kinda annoying and simply makes no sense. I did a speedtest (that's like, 30 seconds i think), and went into the gallery, and (you know how everything is grey wt first?) I saw burn in! Like I could see the ad, and even the numbers, etc, this makes no sense and has yet to have a softwsre fix, I know it has to be a software issue because SLCD or any LCD (SLCD is an IPS panel) does not auffer from screen burn in. And the fact that if I turn the screen off for a bit, it goes away. That's not a hardware issue, that's a software issue, and I feel as thiugh I'm the only one who has noticed. I know this is not an AMOLED DInc because the blacks still light up and screen is not PenTile.
I just wanted to bring this to the attention to the wonderful developers of xda and maybe we can have a software fix cooked?..

I can't see how that would be a software issue. It sounds a lot more like a defective LCD, or an LCD that is under some kind of physical stress, i.e., compressed, twisted, or bent. If it's software, you're talking about data lingering on a RAMDAC in a very orderly way, then being somehow summoned for display in opposition to the memory being addressed. I just can't see how that would happen. A defective LCD could behave like that though. AMOLED burn in is characterized by a degradation of the OLED elements producing a reduction in light output, not a residual luminescence such as a CRT.
AFAIK my screen is normal, and it does it too. I've also heard of this from a few other members. I notice it a lot more on AOSP.
I've seen this too. I always assumed it was some sort of transparency feature.
-xdadevelopers-user
I have this same thing with SLCD as well. It's annoying I don't remember if it always did it but now that it does I can't ignore it. Currently on MIUI it does seem worse on AOSP.

Odd 3D Effect

I was opening my phone up this afternoon, so I had my magnifier on so I could see (my eyes aren't quite what they used to be). I just happened to have a bible app with the red letters and blue Strong's concordance up, and when I looked at it through the magnifier, it had a 3D effect. The red was "higher" than the blue. I called my wife and mother in law over to make sure I wasn't imagining this, and they saw it too. When I took the phone out from under the magnifier, the 3D effect went away (obviously).
I played around with other colors, and it seems like the blues and greens are the furthest "back", and the reds, yellows, and oranges are furthest "forward". White seems to be somewhere in the middle.
I almost feel like bringing the magnifier around with me just too see the 3D stuff, but the glass and round fluorescent bulb together are about 10" in diameter, and a bit hard to stuff in my pocket.
Anyone else see this effect? Is this how the 3D phones work?
That's quite the strange effect, but nope, that's not how 3d phones work. As far as I know they use Parallax barrier technology. here's a quote:
"The LG Optimus 3D (and the Nintendo 3DS for that matter) uses the parallax barrier technology. Parallax might sound scary, but simply put it is the effect of seeing closer objects bigger and more distant ones – smaller. What matters most is the barrier however. It is just what you would imagine – a vertical slit plate on top of the traditional screen that blocks part of the image for each eye. The technology is somewhat limited to smaller screens, but yields good results without the geekines of wearing glasses" (www[dot]phonearena[dot]com/news/3D-How-does-it-work_id16950)
I see this all the time with my glasses. I think there is a slight prism effect where the angle of the different light frequencies (colors) is slightly changed by the lens. I also see it at night when there are bright blue or red neon signs.

I was reading a thred on here not sure which one exactly but with black backround and white text the white looked extremely 3d to me like I could swear that I could actually touch it
I was in the dark and it was the only light to my eyes so it could b since the white txt were the only light I seen them popping out since I was tired and focusing on them lol

It was quite an effect, the difference between the blue and the red was probably about 1/8 inch, and very obvious. I played around a little, and there is a definite difference between the blue & red. Looking at all my app icons was quite impressive.

I myself being 30 have seen something to that effect. I believe it has something to do with the way the led's are layed out on the amoled screen. If you ever have an average size multi color led you'll notice that depending on the color of the light coming from the led, it is not always centered, or in the same area for that matter. I believe the same effect happens with the amoled just at a much smaller aspect. I've also noticed it on a scrolling led banner. When red and blue are close to eachother, one looks higher than the other

Thats about all I can say I like.

Hell I like the screen on this phone even more than the one on the galaxy s 2. The galaxy s 2's screen just doesn't look as nice and the colors are weird. Maybe its cause of that blueish tint. And the low resolution on that bug of a screen? Eww

Older phones like the HTC HD2 couldn't match our phones AMOLED display, but when your talking about the new Galaxy S2, or even a phone like the HTC Amaze both have fascinating displays.
I've compared them side by side and i personally think our phones have more of a yellowish tint that isn't so great.

You shouldn't be comparing a new phone to an older phone in the first place, chances are the new one will always be better.

This is true, but call me crazy I thought my G2 had a better display. and the HTC Evo was pretty sweet..
It's just something about this offset yellowish tint. The whites never seen pure, although i'll give it the black is definantly more black than an LCD.
don't you guys have voodoo control center to tweck colors?
