Help with nexus S! - Nexus S General

I just picked up my nexus S about an hour ago and so far I love it. This is my first smartphone so I have some noob questions. If I want to install a 3rd party keyboard (like swype) how/ where do I do this? How do I update the os to the nexus s? If I hook it up to my computer is it automatically gonna start updating it or something? I am not sure that I want the gingerbread 2.3.3 update because I love the display as it is now and dont want it changed.

For swype, just Google swype beta and sign up. I believe registration is open right now. As far as updates, your phone will eventually prompt you if you want to update. If you choose yes, it will download the update to your phone and perform the update.

Even I have the same doubt, how will I be able to upgrade to 2.3.3?

You can manually update if you follow the guides in the development section. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for the ovrr thr air update that they are in the process of pushing out right now. There's no way to determine when your device is marked to receive it. Could be minutes, hours, days.

you can manually push the update to 2.3.3 through recovery located here:

same exact file you would get from the OTA

How exactly do these OTA updates work? sorry about all the questions, am new to this stuff

A little confused

I was thinking about rooting my incredible and by skimming the forums i see that an update is preventing a few from re rooting or rooting in general but my actual question is when u guys are saying "new" update are you meaning the update that i received a day or so ago with the vcast app store or whatever it is included in the 17mb file...is this the update u guys are talking about or is it like a software update that i must not have recieved yet? Thx!

The latest OTA (with VCast Apps, etc) is not working with Unrevoked/ClockworkMod. I don't know if you could still root manually. Hopefully someone else will chime in. I am rooted with Unrevoked and the last OTA did not work for me. I don't think I want it enough to go back and flash the stock recovery to get it.

Still on 2.3.2

Maybe there are some threads about this topic, but for some reason I can not find them, so I decided to ask here:
Is everybody who is using stock rom on Nexus S already on 2.3.3?
I am still on 2.3.2, because the OTA did not reach me, yet.
I know, Google said that it will take some weeks, but the was a lot of weeks ago.
I am dialing the *#*#2432546#*#* at least once per week, but no luck.
I don't want to root and and push it manually.
Anyone else in the same situation?
you don't need root to push it manually.
you just download the .zip from "2.3.3 links" thread, rename it to update.zip place it on the root of your sdcard.
boot into recovery, install update.zip from sdcard
reboot... grats on your 2.3.3
i think for the nexus s you don't need to rename to update.zip. i didn't have to for 2.3.2
I'm still waiting too I had my nexus s since January what's really good
There had been reports where people aren't getting the ota anymore. So manually update or don't get it at all.

Why would they stop pushing 2.3.3???

lol shame on you.

I believe they abandoned it and opted to push a newer update which would be released in April. But its almost May so who knows.
The manual update is incredibly painless. I don't understand why people are insisting on OTA.
Quick question regarding the manual update. Will I get future updates OTA after manually updating.?

yes its the same file you get from the OTA.
manual update was painless
I did as suggested, and it worked just fine.
I actually like the new color scheme. It looks more natural to me.
BUT, every time i wake up my phone from stand by, I get to see the GPS icon blinking in the notification bar.
Sometimes, even WiFi switches on itself.
I never saw this behaviour on the 2.3.2 build.
Is this the phone trying to update its location?
I don't want to switch off GPS or Networkin the Location & security settings, as I use Google maps multiple times a day.

Manually Check For Updates on your XOOM

Just FYI anyone waiting for the xoom update it hasn't been successful for me yet but i will try every couple of hours. If you manually set the date to a farther ahead date say a couple days your xoom will check for an update. i noticed the time changing everytime i do it under system updates. So anyone wanting to force an update check change the date you can always just re check auto time.
Poop I Want it now.... is it including the bluetooth mouse support?
Just did this and update started downloading. Installing right now!

For those who have gotten the update, is it locking down the bootloader?

dev forums mention that you loose SU and have to redo the rights but then good to go.
just did this as well, tried it two times in two minutes.
First, nothing happened but the time changed for the last update.
Second time when I clicked the system updates under settings it popped up saying I had a new update.
Downloading now, well see how my rooted wifi only handles it!
Just finished... And nothing happened. I am still on 3.0.1, this happened earlier when I got an update notification and clicked install now or whatever.
Anyone know why this might be?
3.1 has a "check now" button.
The OTA update won't go through if you're rooted. Flash using one of the methods in the development section, or return to stock and wait for the OTA all over again (which is what I did.)
Did anyone update and not have it work? I installed the update and everything seemed to go well but after I checked about tablet section and it still says that it is 3.0.1. I am rooted running an older version if titamat. Haven't messed with it yet, at a first communion but was hoping someone had this problem

No way to go stock with a wifi only, once you root you are stuck...

I just got AT&T .91 Update OTA!

Installing this OTA update will make it so you can't use RSD lite to flash a SBK from an earlier version.
This is important because if for any reason you mess up your phone beyond repair and want to go back to a "stock" state, you will not be able to use the SBK files we currently have.
It will cause your phone to brick (as we have seen with the SAME file that was leaked a couple of weeks ago) if you go back to an earlier version via RSD.
Rooting after update. (Confirmed working on page 20)

Sorry if thats not the exact correct version because I was so excited and hit download right away but I did see the .91. Ill let you know as soon as its done installing.

4.5.91 yea I just got it too! for the last month, I've been checking for updates every hour or so. I'm mad pumped! Its downloading now, and I cannot wait to root it and get rid of the ads, try CM7!
It's true!
Screenshot attached, I am drooling all over the progress bar
What build were you guys on? Unlocked or not?
I got the update as well, but reluctant installing the new version since I may lose root. Has anyone tried Gingerbreak, to see if it will work?
I don't think I will get it since I have the 2.3.4 beta 4 installed. Right?

I just got it too. I'm on stock .83 locked. Woohoo!
You will lose the ability to flash back if you want/need to with the OTA upgrade.
Better to flash KP's beta 4.5.
That's what I have beta 4.5

Here are the release notes for the update:
http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Support/US-EN/Mobile%20Phones/ATRIX_4G/US-EN/Documents/StaticFiles/SWU_ATT_ATRIX_v4.5.91.htm
I'm hesitant to do it because I haven't unlocked my BL yet.
Apparently I don't know how to post links on XDA. I'll let someone less noob do it.
I see 1080p video in the log. I have had this build for a couple weeks...but dint have 1080p video. We need that camera apk.

The notes say 1080p "playback," NOT recording. AFAIK the leak already had playback.

the implications of ROOT

hello!
i just got my N4 a few days ago...
didnt even change a ringtone yet... just downloaded some apps, and costumized the phone a-bit.
i do want to root, because some advanced actions such as recording calls (legal in my country) require root.
i was about to root using the Nexus 4 ToolKit posted here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688
but when i run it it always says its tookit ver v1.3.0, and a 1.6.0 is avilable, i update but when i re-run it, it says its 1.3 again...
and even if i go past this step and get to the "What build do you have?
the only answer i can pic is 4.2 (JOP24C)
and i own JOP24D (2.4.1) - will this be an issue?
and also - if i root my phone, and lets say androud 4.2.2 comes out a day later, does the phone still update? or do i stop getting updates as soon as im rooted?
TY!

If you get the donate version it will update it so that you can do the 4.2.1 build. I think it was like $5. Well worth supporting the dev

alright cool i don't mind paying 5USD...
but what about the most important things?
does rooting 100% erase evetyhing?
Do i keep getting updates to my phone? or when a new version comes out i have to re-root or something?
It will erase EVERYTHING and you would have to go back to stock to get the OTA or wait for a build to be flashable

If the ROM got OTA (over the air) you can update i guess, not really populair with OTA, but you can download 4.2.2 stock ROM or custom ROM when it comes out.

i just have one more question - that i didnt understand.
as of now, unrooted, if 4.3(lets say) comes out tommorow, my device updates, bam.. im 4.3
if i root now, at 4.2.1, the above will not happen? meaning in order to update to 4.3 i will have to lose all my data again?

ashamed to say i didnt really get it.. lol.
you said OTA is "Over the Air", right?
so if i rooted at 4.2.1 (just rooted, no rom or anything), and 4.3 came out do i
1. Have to delete everything AGAIN and re-root on 4.3 to get the update
2. have to find the 4.3 file online and install it somehow
3. do nothing, the phone automatically gets updated
ty =)

Getting root on your device does not delete anything. What deletes everything is unlocking the bootloader (which, at the present time, is required to obtain root). You only have to unlock the bootloader once. Once it is unlocked, getting root is trivial.
Every time you receive an over-the-air update, it will remove your root access, BUT, as I mentioned earlier, getting it back is trivial when your bootloader is unlocked.

Have you read the stickies in the General and Q&A sections? There is a couple of stickies by me in the General section (the "Basics" and "Root" links in my signature), and there is also a sticky by Jubakuba in the Q&A section.

The easiest way is to wait for the OTA notification to appear on your device. Then just accept it, and then root again.
I've written up something for the Galaxy Nexus (sticky in the GNex General section), but nothing yet for the N4. The basic premise (and most of the commands) are the same. You can browse through it for some background info.
